Yankees Planning To Place Jazz Chisholm On IL With UCL Injury

By Anthony Franco | August 13, 2024 at 5:49pm CDT

The Yankees are likely to place Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list with an injury to the UCL in his left elbow, manager Aaron Boone told the New York beat (relayed on X by Chris Kirschner of the Athletic). The organization is unsure whether Chisholm will need to undergo surgery.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the injury is to Chisholm’s non-throwing arm. It’s nevertheless a tough blow that’ll subtract the Yankees’ key deadline acquisition from the lineup. Chisholm has gotten out to an excellent start to his time in the Bronx. He already has seven homers in 14 games. He’s hitting .316/.361/.702 across 61 trips to the plate since the trade.

Chisholm had connected on 13 longballs with Miami. This is his first major league campaign reaching the 20-homer mark. He has also swiped 27 bases (including a perfect 5-5 showing with the Yankees) and now carries an above-average .257/.328/.445 slash line on the year. The Yankees have won nine of 14 games since Chisholm joined the team. They enter play tonight half a game behind the Orioles for the top spot in the AL East. Baltimore is tied with the Guardians for the #1 seed in the American League, so that’s very much in play for New York as well.

While Chisholm had spent his entire Marlins career in the middle of the diamond (primarily at second base or in center field), he has moved to the hot corner in the Bronx. Chisholm has been in the starting lineup for all 14 games since the Yankees acquired him. Thirteen of those have come at third base, while he has made one start in center field. The hot corner has been a problem for New York all season. Yankee third basemen aside from Chisholm have hit .231/.292/.320 through 419 trips to the plate.

Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu have gotten the bulk of that work and neither has hit at a league average level. The Yankees have deployed LeMahieu as the right-handed half of a first base platoon with lefty-swinging Ben Rice lately. That could point to Cabrera, who gets the nod there tonight against White Sox righty Jonathan Cannon, as the primary option if Chisholm goes on the shelf. Oswald Peraza, who is hitting .244/.352/.384 in a fairly pedestrian Triple-A campaign, is on the 40-man roster. So is Jorbit Vivas, whom the Yankees acquired in an offseason trade with the Dodgers. The Yankees briefly called Vivas up around the All-Star Break but didn’t get him into a game. He’s hitting .242/.379/.374 over 58 Triple-A contests.

The Yankees can no longer turn to the trade market for anything more than a minor league depth pickup. Amed Rosario is headed to the waiver wire after being designated for assignment by the Dodgers last night. If Chisholm is out for an extended stretch, the Yankees could look to put in a claim for the righty-hitting infielder. New York is behind everyone other than the Phillies, Guardians and Orioles in the waiver priority, though. There’s a good chance that another team claims Rosario before the Yankees get an opportunity.

The Yankees sign big name free agents every single season, hence their 300 plus million dollar payroll. Apparently you’re the one that has been “under a rock” or maybe you haven’t noticed because the Yankees can no longer buy a World Series.

true… since the Subway Series in 2000 the Mets (minus the Bernie Madoff years), the Dodgers (minus the Frank McCourt divorce years) & the Yankees have been trying to buy a World Series for the past 23+ years and only have two (2009 Yankees, 2020 Dodgers in front of cardboard fans) to show for it…. the way to win consistently is to tank (& cheat) like the Astros and Braves did

You have to have the perfect balance of tanking/cheating and the ability to spend some money with a smart front office. Look at the White Sox, they tanked for years with nothing to show for it except two short playoff series.

Frankly, I think the Yankees need to can Cashman and should have a long time ago. His success came under the boss who was willing to spend freely both on free agents and on amateur talent. Cashman cannot seem to figure out the newest form of baseball, still stuck in the steroid era of doing things. Cashman got taken to school by Preller and I’m no where near an AJ fan.

Gotta love the Yankee fans who will remind us of all their championships and then cry when any other team wins that they tanked or cheated. Scratch.

More criminals and cheaters have worn the Yankees uniform and been paid MILLIONS than any other team, and it’s not even close.

But yeah, they’re great. Scratch some more.

          Life’s an itch.

AJ Preller fleeced himself – he traded away CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore, James Wood, Robert Hassell, Jarlin Susana, Justin Lange, Jairo Iriarte, Samuel Zavala and Steven Wilson for Randy Vásquez, Jhony Brito, Kyle Higashioka, 2 years of Dylan Cease, 2 years of Michael King, a year and a half of Juan Soto, and a half year of Josh Bell LOL

Cashman isn’t gonna get fired – Hal doesn’t have the stones to do so… also Yankees success was ALL due to Gabe Paul, Harding Peterson, Gene Michael, Bob Watson & Brian Cashman – the Yankees won IN SPITE of the Boss, not because of him.

Almost as equally funny as you LOLing that the Padres shedded 36.5 million owed to Soto and Grissom and got better.

Really? He’s been in the league since 2020 and his career high in games played in a season is 124. It doesn’t take a crystal ball. Some guys have good health…. Some don’t. It’s obvious where Jazz falls.

He is frequently hurt. Look at Rendon. He is older, but that guy waks to first base and pulls something. Same for Stanton and Trout. The big dudes get hurt alot. Sometimes the little guys are just as fragile.

I’m reading Homer and have to say…the Gods punishment for Hubris??? I know that’s not gonna go over well with people but he thinks he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Much like Soto. But Soto at least isn’t basing that on nothing. He sure was on a run tho, I’ll give him that.

I’m partially making a joke. I never said I’m happy. I don’t care either way. Aristotle is by far the most overrated Greek philosopher (along with Plato really-but at that point in history Plato was a philosophical necessity I think. Perhaps Aristotle too, unfortunately.) Maybe try Heraclitus’ fragments. Pre-socratic philosophers. Aeschylus and some other Tragedy writers were quite wise.

Really he heralded the way for dogmatic materialism and the nihilism that we see in our modern world. In his day of superstition that may have been needed but today it’s bone sucking philosophy (he has his good moments like Plato). Also arguably responsible for the ultimate creation of the Roman Empire via his pupil Alexander (who was also likely indebted to Plato’s “The Republic”) which led to the eventual subjugation of humanity to the dictates of the Church. I’m painting a somewhat bias picture. There was good and bad in all this. I’m no historian. But back to baseball.

Agreed. Nietzsche is a truly deep philosopher. The kind that makes you question everything you think and believe and shows you other ways. He warned modernity of its plight into meaninglessness. They didn’t listen. I see so much on this site that boils down to the root problems that modern philosophy deals with. The people who think they are rational are just as irrational as those they put down. Just like modern supposed “scientific” thinkers are largely a response to religious dogmatism who merely substitute dogmas. Both sides are extremes and miss the point. Old school/new school. Same old story.

Not clapping over it. But I grow tired of these players who don’t act professionally being poor examples for kids so I’m not sad they aren’t on the field. The whole “let them play” thing is, while having some merit, ultimately a symptom of cultural decline into the anything goes that is modern culture. Don’t just be yourself but rub it all over everyone’s noses. Just because it’s common in one culture doesn’t mean it’s valid. Sure, they are extremes. The old nose down/business like approach in US was a bit stifling. But the answer isn’t complete immersion in it’s opposite like the “Soto shuffle” bs or Ozuna rounding the bases 1mph with wings out. And he’s not as bad as so many people.

The Soto Shuffle is nuanced gamesmanship. Some players engage in it on and off the field. There’s a fine line where it can cross over into poor sportsmanship. I don’t feel tbe shuffle crosses that line and it’s kind of fun but that’s my subjective opinion.

He did it to Greinke then Greinke, who acted like nothing was on his mind, toyed with him calling timeout right after he did a long pre-pitch thing, then threw up and in (which I don’t condone). Soto, to his credit, didn’t look too phased or make a scene (which wouldn’t have been out of line at that point imo) just looked like he understood “Oh, this isn’t some wimpy nerd like I thought. Ok.”

A last resort in his back pocket after the 10th pitch of the at bat perhaps. The umpires only check you for sticky stuff. Show me where the rulebook says you can’t use a weapon. Well, I guess the bat and ball are weapons potentially but a gun is easier. Tho someone like Rodon could fracture an index finger.

Back in my day, players weren’t coddled like they are now! They played through pain, didn’t need all these fancy trainers and rehab programs. Nowadays, these young guys get a hangnail, and they’re on the IL for a week. We had tougher players who could handle the grind without all these injuries. Maybe if they spent less time worrying about launch angles and more time just playing the game, they’d stay healthier!

Back in your day the top stars didnt get 300 million dollar monster deals. Young players didnt make 10-20M a yr. So comparing things to your day doesnt mean anything. In your day there were not setup men specialists and closers who routinely throw 95+ MPH. The stakes game and money is far different. And who judges things like that. Mostly anecdotal since you dont know the extent of injuries. DId they have MRIs back then to see the damage? Nope. They had to go by X rays. MRI is far more detailed and sees more. I could imagine you with a young pitcher where you let him thow 115 pitches a game because you wanted him to go 9. Then the arm blow out for a TJ because you had to beat Oakland in a meaningless April game.

FYI Jazz has had an injury record far greater than Giolito or Grissom. He’s out every year. I should know, I drafted him 3 years in a row and it cost me. Giolito has at least played a full season. Jazz has gotten injured every season and Grissom is too early to really know…

It wasn’t a jab at the Yankees I’d that’s what you think. It was just a pretty obvious turnout. I said he was injury prone when the trade was made. If you didn’t see it coming, well then now you do.

Sliding head first is asking for injury. You shouldn’t do it unless it’s a must win game. Hand, arm, shoulder and neck injuries easily could happen. Slide feet first, where are the coaches? Idiot keeps sliding head first every time.

One of my issues, and I see that a lot, is that he was turning his head to see where the ball was after he rounded 3rd. Once you’re waved in, and the decision is made, you should never look for the ball. That’s what the coaches are for.

It probably wouldn’t have made a difference, but every split second counts.

He’s lost whatever magic he had back in day n has to have compromising evidence on Steinbreners or something. How does this guy keep his job? If ol man were still alive Cashman woulda been fired long ago … and probably re-hired as well.
