Dodgers Designate Amed Rosario For Assignment, Activate Mookie Betts

By Steve Adams | August 12, 2024 at 11:58pm CDT

The Dodgers announced Monday that they’ve reinstated Mookie Betts from the 60-day injured list and created space in somewhat surprising fashion: infielder/outfielder and trade deadline acquisition Amed Rosario has been designated for assignment.

Rosario, 28, was acquired in a trade sending 28-year-old minor league reliever Michael Flynn back to the Rays. It wasn’t a steep price to pay necessarily, but it’s nevertheless unexpected to see Los Angeles move on in such quick fashion. The versatile Rosario received only 12 plate appearances in his second stint with Los Angeles — the Dodgers also acquired him at the 2023 deadline — and has hit well all season. In 287 plate appearances between Tampa Bay and L.A., he’s slashing .305/.331/.415 — about 14% better than league-average, by measure of wRC+.

Dodgers brass was largely choosing among Rosario, Enrique Hernandez and Nick Ahmed when determining who would be the odd man out to clear way for Betts’ return. Hernandez has struggled badly in 2024 overall, but a well-timed hot streak has ostensibly saved his spot on the roster. He’s hitting .333/.405/.545 in 37 plate appearances this month. Ahmed has posted an empty .268 batting average in 42 plate appearances (.268/.286/.341, 77 wRC+), but he’s a high-end defender at shortstop. With Betts returning to right field, keeping an elite middle infield defender like Ahmed apparently won out over keeping a more productive but less valuable defensive piece in Rosario.

The veteran Rosario signed an eminently affordable one-year, $1.5MM contract with the Rays over the winter, looking to rebound from a career-worst showing with the Guardians and Dodgers last year. After spending years as the primary shortstop in Cleveland, he’s moved to a utility role that’s seen him log time at shortstop, second base, third base and in right field this season. He’s drawn poor defensive grades in general and has never been regarded as a high-quality glove at shortstop at the big league level. Rosario has been productive at the plate, however, and that’s particularly true against lefties, who he’s tagged for an impressive .327/.355/.462 line in 2024.

Between his light contract, offensive production and his growing experience at multiple positions, Rosario stands a far greater chance of being claimed by another team than most veterans who are designated for assignment this time of year. The trade deadline has passed, so the only option the Dodgers will have is to place Rosario on outright waivers or release waivers. It’d be another, more modest surprise if he passed through unclaimed.

With that in mind, it’s worth noting that outright waiver order is determined by the reverse order of the MLB-wide standings and is not league-specific. That’s a common misconception, but league-specific waivers pertained to the now-defunct August trade waiver process. (MLBTR has confirmed this with league sources on multiple occasions.) Since Rosario is a free agent at the end of the year, it’s likely that rebuilding clubs and others whose postseason hopes have faded will allow him to pass through.

At the moment, waiver priority among postseason hopefuls (using an admittedly arbitrary criteria of fewer than six games back in either a division race or Wild Card chase) would be ranked: Pirates, Reds, Cubs, Rays, Giants, Cardinals, Mets, Braves, Red Sox, Mariners, Astros, Royals, Padres, D-backs, Twins, Brewers, Guardians, Phillies, Yankees and Orioles. As of this writing, Rosario is still owed $387K of this year’s salary. Any team that claims him would be on the hook for the full sum, whereas the Dodgers would be spared that sum plus the 110% tax as a third-time luxury payor. Overall, waiving Rosario could save the Dodgers about $813K — assuming he’s claimed.

As for Betts, he’ll return to his customary right field and add another former MVP to the top of the Dodgers’ lineup, slotting into between fellow former MVPs Shohei Ohtani (leadoff) and Freddie Freeman (No. 3 hitter). Betts gives manager Dave Roberts a right-handed bat to break up that pair of imposing lefties, and Betts of course is among the more feared hitters in the sport when healthy.

Prior to the fractured hand that cost him the past eight-plus weeks, Betts was hitting .304/.405/.488 with 10 homers, 16 doubles, three triples, nine steals (in 10 tries), a 14.2% walk rate and just a 10.3% strikeout rate. With Betts now back in right field, the Dodgers will play Miguel Rojas regularly at shortstop and Gavin Lux at second base, with the aforementioned Hernandez an option to back up Lux (especially against lefties) and Ahmed providing a glove-first backup at shortstop.

So only have 1 natural SS on the roster? That’s playing with fire. I’d rather have SS depth than another bench bat that’s not much of an upgrade over what they already have.

They can just pick Ahmed back up dude. Tons of other nobodies are available, playing in the minors and independent leagues. Orioles just picked up Segura on a minor league deal. You’re acting like it’s hard to find someone who can post a 70 wRC+ with decent defense. Dime a dozen

So you admit that if Rojas gets hurt then Ahmed is the best option (assuming he’d even be available). Sounds like they’re better off keeping him, then.

LOL imagine keeping a BACKUP SS just in case your mediocre defensive first SS gets hurt…. Good thing you’re not a GM lol yikes!!! They can just re-sign Ahmed if Rojas gets hurt…. Why would they keep him if they can just release him and get him back…. And you’re expecting me to keep tabs on which 70 wRC+ level players are currently toiling in AAA and independent baseball?? Get out of here with that nonsense dude. I just gave you an example of a player recently sign and there are obviously countless more. What an embarrassing comment. At least you tried though

It’s long past time to have a serious discussion and serious articles about Andre Ethier’s very legitimate and horribly overlooked Hall of Fame credentials.

He is very likely a true Hall of Fame player but he might not get in because of Manfred’s/MLB’s/MLBPeeA’s anti-CA bias. They HATE CA.

It is just bizarre they didn’t option Andy Pages back to AAA.

With Mookie and Teoscar holding down the corner OF spots, Kiermaier in CF with Edman working his way back to take his place, and Heyward and Kiké on the bench and able to play OF… they could’ve kept Rosario on the roster without losing anybody.

Pages hit .202/.261/.250/.511 in July. Granted, he’s had a nice 7 game stretch here in August, but his defense in CF has been abysmal. He belongs in RF, which is now Mookie’s spot.

Edman will take over at CF upon his return from the IL anyway, so why give up the depth in Rosario just so Pages can get a few more starts against LHP in the meantime?

Right, i mean Pages hasn’t hit since like June. I don’t understand this move. We have Rojas already, why keep Ahmed over Rosario? Rosario has been much better than their other options at SS Kike/CT3/Rojas. Sure he’s not a great defender, but he can hit way better.. Why even make the trade anyways? They barely played him and then just DFA’d him.

Ahmed will be jettisoned once Edman is ready to return to action. I can somewhat understand keeping Ahmed around until then, just in case Rojas gets hurt.

They’ll also need to make space for Muncy relatively soon. At that point there is no one left to DFA unless they’re willing to part with Kiké or Heyward or Kiermaier… or, again: option Andy Pages to AAA.

So if Pages is likely to get sent down to AAA eventually, why not do it now to keep Rosario around for depth? That’s what is odd to me.

I don’t understand why LAD picked up and still need Kiermaier.
I wouldn’t be surpised if he gets DFA’ed soon like another commenter wrote. There are only so many roster spots and not all injured players are “Fast/quick healers” – I love that phrase 😉

The value in Kiermaier is 100% for his defense. Andy Pages is terrible out there, and really belongs in RF. Since that’s now Mookie’s spot, you either go with Kiermaier for elite defense and terrible offense, or Pages for bad defense and league average offense. They may settle on a platoon Pages vs. LHP and Kiermaier vs. RHP.

Edman’s return will cut into most of Kiermaier’s and Pages’s playing time, though, as he figures to be the regular starting CF.

However way they slice it, once Edman and Muncy are back the depth of the Dodgers roster will be ridiculous. Every single position player will have had postseason or championship experience.

That said, the Dodgers will be a complete disappointment if they don’t go all the way this year. They have an unbelievable roster. And it will be unbelievable if they don’t win. Playoffs have been fickle to the Dodgers. Huge payrolls don’t necessarily equal success when it counts.

Regression to the mean says they should at least make it to the NLCS this year. Not sure who will be the Achilles Heel for them …Phillies, Brewers, Padres. I would say the Padres could be their worst match up only in terms of it turning into Chaos Ball with arch-rivalry weirdness turned up to 11. But it would be a great series.

My first thought is the Cleveland should scoop him up as well. I’d be fine with him going to 2B and Giménez moving to SS, however I like the defense with Rocchio up the middle. I’d prefer they keep it as is with Amed being a pinch hitting option taking Schneeman’s place on the roster.

I just remember when they were moving Jose Ramirez back and forth around the infield and he finally said something to the effect of “I don’t care where you put me, but put me there and leave me there”. I feel that way with Gimenez now…if you want to move him to short, wait until next year. Don’t mess with a good thing right now,

I have to guess that the only reason is Ahmed’s SS defense is way better than Rosario’s. And with Mookie going to RF they wanted someone who could hold down the position a bit until Muncy comes back and pushes Kike over (or if Taylor ever comes back). Rosario’s bat hasn’t really taken off in LA how his numbers would forecast so it’s just too risky. You either have a so-so SS with a cold bat, or a good SS with a cold bat

Yep. The Dodgers are thin at SS for sure. Kike and Taylor aren’t the answer either. They should have committed more dollars to a proven SS other than Mookie. With all their resources SS should have been priority 3 after Ohtani and Yamamoto. SS is hugely important in the post season.

Amed Rosario is a talented player he is definitely getting claimed early. I doubt he falls to a spot where one of the WC candidates has a chance at him. This guy doesn’t have to be Ozzie Smith. So what if he’s not a Gold Glove. I’d find a roster spot for him for my team if I was a GM. He has extra value because he can play some OF in a limited role – Versatile etc.

The LAD could have deferred the $ over 50 years and kept him.

Sorry I couldn’t resist going for the bad Joke. My apologies

The great thing about the Duran story is it opens another way for the doyers to manipulate their roster. Rather than DFa’ing him, they could have just had Amed Rosario say something rude and in a few days have another guy fake an insult. They’d go from just faking injuries to faking insults, too. They could keep their bullpen arms really fresh this way.

With Kike’s resurgence, Mookie’s return to RF, and Muncy & Edman back in a week, it makes sense in a way. At this point, Rosario was only going to see playing limited playing time platooning with Lux @ 2B against southpaws. Also opens the door for Mookie to platoon with Lux against RH pitching.

I think the natural pick would have been Ahmed, given his limited offensive numbers. But his clock is ticking once Muncy & Edman come off the IL. Since they’re both coming off the 60 day IL, the FO will have to free up two spaces on the 40 man and active so one would imagine that Ahmed and probably Kiermaier are DFA candidates in the next week or so.

This feels a week early…They must be very sure Muncy is OK so that Kike’ can take the RH bench bat role from Rosario. If Muncy relapses (and Taylor doesn’t return) Ahmed probably would stay on the roster as backup IF, and he and Barnes would be a very light-hitting RH bench.

The Dodgers have 3 guys coming back in the next week or so. Betts, Muncy and Edman that needed roster spots. Means those 3 were pushing out 3 of Ahmed, Kiermaier, Kike and Rosario. I definitely thought it was Ahmed and Kiermaier were first to go and it was a battle between Rosario and Kike for the last spot. Looks like Kike is staying (off-field more valuable than on).. While I think the order is strange, I think Amed was the chopping block anyway.

Since Mookie was never on 60-day IL they gained a 40 man spot with the Rosario DFA. So, when Edman and Muncy return they’ll need two 26 man roster spots but only one 40 man roster spot. I’d think that with the move of Betts to RF, Heyward becomes expendable. So, the move is most likely Ahmed is DFA’d since Edman can also play SS along with CF and other spots, and Heyward goes on the IL. That gives you two 26 man roster space and one more 40 man roster spots.

Playing for the Dodgers is like a game of musical chairs. They’re so absurdly rich and can buy and add whoever they want that good players like Amed Rosario, who they JUST traded for, get thrown out like yesterday’s garbage. And somehow players like Nick Ahmed and Kevin Kiermaier are in full “Survivor” mode as players get axed one by one, somehow hanging on to a roster spot until someone better comes along (Edman, another midseason purchase). And what happens when Brasier/Graterol/Treinen come back? Who goes? Anthony Banda, having a great year? Fan favorite (but actual loser) Joe Kelly? All these bums get a World Series ring playing for the super team anyway so I guess it works out for them.

I just don’t understand why a team would let Rosario go. In a game where less than half the league is hitting over .270, and only few are hitting over .300 for the season, why would you let a guy like this go? His defense also is not bad. Mariners should pick him up-we have several players hitting below .200.
