Dodgers Win World Series

By Anthony Franco | October 30, 2024 at 10:52pm CDT

The Dodgers are champions. Los Angeles stormed back from a 5-0 deficit tonight (with some help from the Yankees’ defense) for a 7-6 win to take it in five games. No team had ever come back from five runs down in a World Series clincher. As expected, Freddie Freeman won the Series MVP award.

It’s their second title in five seasons. While the pandemic restrictions limited their celebration in 2020, they’ll get to host a parade this time. The Dodgers were baseball’s best team in the regular season, leading MLB with 98 wins while outscoring opponents by 179 runs. There were nevertheless questions heading into October about whether a pitching staff battered by injuries could hold up.

The run to a championship wasn’t without adversity. L.A. found itself on the brink of elimination in its Division Series against the Padres. San Diego took a 2-1 series lead. The Friars had two chances to close it out, but Dodger pitching blanked them in consecutive games to advance. That was their only brush with elimination. Los Angeles took a 3-1 lead in the NL Championship Series against the Mets before closing it out in six.

They got out to an even better start to the World Series. Freeman’s two-out, walk-off grand slam off Nestor Cortes pulled them to a Game 1 victory. They survived a ninth-inning scare in Game 2 to take a 2-0 lead to the Bronx. Los Angeles took Game 3 in a 4-2 win that wasn’t as close as the score suggested. The stranglehold on the series gave them three more clinching chances after Tuesday’s blowout loss.

For a while, it looked like tonight would be another easy defeat. An early offensive barrage from the Yankees knocked Jack Flaherty out of the game in the second inning. The Series looked to be headed back to L.A. until a defensive collapse by the Yanks in the fifth inning. Errors by Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe helped load the bases before a critical two-out miscommunication between Anthony Rizzo and Gerrit Cole that extended the inning. Hits by Freeman and Teoscar Hernández plated four more runs to tie it.

While the Yankees pulled back in front with a 6-5 lead, the Dodgers would take control in the eighth inning. The bottom half of the L.A. order loaded the bases against Tommy Kahnle. Sacrifice flies from Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts put them in front. Blake Treinen navigated a tricky bottom half of the eighth. After churning through their high-leverage bullpen arms, Dave Roberts turned to Walker Buehler for the ninth. Buehler easily set down the bottom third of the Yankee order, securing the title with consecutive punchouts of Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo.

Freeman homered in each of the first four games. While he didn’t extend that streak tonight, his two-run single in the fifth was pivotal. He wins his second championship, while Betts and injured reliever Joe Kelly join Royals’ reliever Will Smith as active players with three titles (h/t to Matt Eddy of Baseball America). Among the first-time champions: Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernández*, Jack Flaherty, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and NLCS MVP Tommy Edman.

It’s the eighth title in franchise history, the Dodgers’ first in a full season since 1988. The organization pulls even with the Giants for fifth on the all-time leaderboard. They’re now one away from the A’s and Red Sox, who are tied for third with nine rings apiece. The Yankees remain on 27 championships for at least another season, while the Cardinals are in second with 11 titles.

* Hernández was on the 2017 Astros but was traded midseason.

No because they constantly sign players who are injury prone, their most expensive player being example 1.

Glasnow will always get hurt no matter how you limit his innings, yoshi could also be like that but it’s too early to predict, shohei is going to be 31, mookie 33, Freddie 35-36

        They can’t get healthier

The Dodgers were unquestionably the best team in baseball. But their margin over the Padres was razor thin. Next year will be exciting again!

Except that unless things change dramatically on how pitchers are handled, and what is expected of them, you’re never going to see a healthy rotation again.

Chasing velocity and spin rates and telling pitchers they need to go full out for 90-100 pitches every start in order to get outs, has it’s repercussions.

There will be an agreement – extension with opt out after next season at a high AAV . He is a generational talent in Japanese baseball and the posting system only guarantees a club a certain amount . Basically, it will be «  the Sasaki farewell tour » … come and see him whilst you can and from his point of view , he has a baseline for salary

Roki Sasaki can’t technically be posted for two more years. Unless he wants to go the Ohtani route and play for league minimum the next 6 years which based on performance his arb years will most certainly change that. He would be leaving 100s of millions on tbe table. It would really suck if he went to the Dodgers on yet another ypshi like deal.

He can be posted, if the team granted that. Something that the Chiba Lotte Mariners didnt gave last year when Sasaki ask his team to post him.

But he cant ask big money like Yamamoto did if the Mariners posted him this December because he still below 25, so he will only sign for 740K and the posting fee (20M) will go to the Mariners

Yeah, I was responding to the specific comment above, but I was referring to the mistakes the Yankees made.

Make no mistake, my opinion is that the Dodgers played excellent ball and were fundamentally sound. Freeman was an absolute BEAST! Edman was excellent. Overall though, it’s all the little things that LA did right that kept them coming back.

LAD was the better team and deserved the win. Yankees played poorly and lost two games they could’ve/should’ve won.

I congratulate you and the many other good LAD fans, BlueSkies. Enjoy this for all its worth, man. As we well know, it could happen again next year, or in our case 16 years and counting…….

Honestly none of the American League teams this season seemed that convincing. The Orioles played badly for three months but still had a winning record against the Yankees. I’m not surprised a National League team won it this season and this Dodger team was as good as any of them. Then again last season’s World Series was so unexpected that you never know what’s going to happen.

Sorry Yankee but the Dodgers executed in the field while the Yankees did not. Half the game is played defensively. The Dodgers out played the Yankees with their gloves, with their bats, and their arms on their mound. Part of executing is limiting mistakes for opponent to capitalize on.

I just find it wrong to try and dismiss what the Dodgers accomplished. Both teams played in all 5 games only one of those teams won 4 of those games, that’s what counts.

In reality the Yankees have not been in the World Series for an entire generation of fans until this year.

Dodgers have been the best team in baseball in the regular season for many years now. Playoffs are a crapshoot, but they post around 100 wins on an annual basis, have won the West all but one year for nearly a decade, have been to FOUR World Series and won Two Championships in nine years.

If ever there was a day for Dodgers fans to brag, one would think it is today…

You’d think spending close to 6 billion dollars on player payroll since the 2000s would have culminated in more 1 162 game championship the last 24 years. Im honestly shocked it didn’t.

Congrats to dodger fans. Hope they enjoy it. I was just shocked to hear how much money the dodger franchise has spent the last 24 years and little to show for it until today.

Well if you’re paying high salaries you’re paying for better or the best players.

I don’t think dodgers were giving nobodies all these years 9 figure contracts.

Paying for the best means you should get the best results. Otherwise you’re just squandering money.

Unfortunately, it does make a joke as to MLB’s competitiveness as seen by fans around the country – particularly those not living in the LA or NYC markets.

It’s a big factor why young people in America – maybe
under age 35 – don’t care about MLB much but are
wrapped up in the NFL and NBA.

Fans love parody that’s for sure

For the most part nfl is any given Sunday you could turn a franchise around in one year

Lions Texans come to mind of recent examples

NBA you have some perennial losers
Hornets never seem to get it right
Been a while since bulls got it right but that’s more to do with Lonzo Ball health if anything.
But for the most part teams have gone thru waves of success and alternate pretty well.

MLB just doesn’t have that. Seems like rebuilding takes 10 years and it’s hard to wait for success to come in a decade.

MLB is definitely in danger of losing younger fans that I can say
Not really mlbs fault cause in a world of instant gratification and instant results and fast paced information coming at you in an instant mlb doesn’t fit the current culture as well.

How you pay for payroll is irrelevant. They dished out roughly 6 billion since the 2000s.

I honestly had no idea they spent that much on payroll chasing rings all those years. Like if I had to put a number on it I’d had guessed 1 or 2 maybe 3. 6 blew my mind

Sometimes you forget just how small 1 billion dollars actually is sometimes. Sounds like a really big number but it’s not.

Esp when teams like the dodgers threw away money like it was nothing for 24 years with little to show for it and our own government sends US tax dollars to places like Ukraine and gives US taxes dollars to undocumented immigrants instead of using it to improve the lives of citizens by funding schools healthcare etc.

2017 the Red Sox and Yankees both were eliminated by the cheating Astros, each team could have beaten the Dodgers.

2018 the Sox were far better than every other team. 108 regular season wins and cruised through the postseason.

I got nothing against you man you seem like a great commenter here. It’s more the fact that you just called out the stros when many other teams cheated.

The yankee letter man I wish we could get the real story on that. Draft kings and fan duels sued mlb to get the letter exposed (it was between manfred and the Yankees). Before it was released I remember an article stating it would cripple the Yankees franchise forever, it was also referred to as the smoking gun. Then when it was released I remember it being no big deal which seems really odd given what happened to that point.

Just a quick google search led me to USA Today saying the Yankees used the dugout phone and a replay room to steal signs in 2015-2016. After all Beltran the main culprit from the astros scandal just came over from the Yankees so it makes sense.

Don’t think I’m allowed to link to it just google “Yankees sealed letter” it should be one of the top results

“The letter’s contents, above all, confirm the long-held suspicions of many players that cheating predated – and was far more prevalent than – the Astros’ 2017 scheme. Since then, current and former Astros players have endured the brunt of fan and media criticism.”

That right there should end the witch hunt on the astros. Many teams cheated and it sounds like the Yankees did pretty much what the Astro’s did just a little different.

Cole isn’t to blame for the game 5 loss.

He hadn’t given up a hit in the first 4 innings. Then there was a single to lead off the 5th. Judge dropped the ball in CF. An easy fly ball and egregious error. Volpe made the throwing error on the next play. Cole struck out the next two batters. By then he should of been out of the inning. But then there was the play at 1B. Cole should have covered but Rizzo misplayed it as well. NONE of the runs scored were earned. That isn’t Cole’s fault. Get real. And he still came out and pitched the 6th and 2/3 of the 7th with no runs allowed.

You can’t give the Dodgers 6 outs in an inning and expect them not to score multiple runs. The Yanks played sloppy the whole series and were lucky they didn’t get swept. But Cole was one of the only guys that actually performed well in the series.

Rod – Cole performed yet again like a very good but not a great big game pitcher. He should have covered first, he shouldn’t have given up the 2-run hit to Freeman, and he shouldn’t have given up the 2-run hit to Teoscar. Those three mistakes were all on him, because he got rattled and was mentally weak.

There’s two horrible rules in MLB:

        1) Pitchers shouldn’t have runs scored as “Unearned” if they are the one who made the fielding error.

        2) Just because an error is made, shouldn’t mean every run that scores in that same inning should be “unearned”.

So let’s say a runner reaches base on a Judge error with 2 outs, then Cole gives up 5 consecutive homeruns. All 6 runs would be scored as “Unearned” because of Judge’s error …. absolutely ridiculous how the pitcher isn’t held accountable.

You keep trying to ignore what actually happened in that game, including the two other errors that happened before the play at first. And ignore that Cole got two huge strikeouts after those errors. If you judge a pitcher’s performance by having to record 6 outs every inning then all pitchers are going to look terrible. You fundamentally do not understand what happened that inning which is even highlighted by your stupid analogy of 5 consecutive home runs. The defense didn’t record two outs and then Cole made a mistake. The defense had 3 errors, and then Cole had two strikeouts. You’re trying to do everything to frame it as Cole’s fault which is ridiculous. Not only do you not understand baseball, you’re disingenuous person.

@Darren what about Yamamoto? Betts? Freeman? If anything it shows that Superteams have enough depth to survive injuries. No Glasgow and Ohtani was mediocre, yet they have Freeman and Betts who can always win games. Now imagine when the superteam is healthy. And they will certainly add Roki Sasaki next year. As far as I’m concerned the Dodgers will continue to make it to the NLDS. Money these days takes teams farther than 15-20 years ago. Especially with so many unique talents.

          Yamamoto was an unproven rookie.
          We traded for Mookie.
Just about every team in the league could have afforded Freeman’s contract.

Unproven rookie with hard stats in the NPB. MLB scouting is getting better at evaluating Japanese players. Everyone expected him to perform well and he did.

Every team can’t afford to extend Mookie.

Afford Freeman?? Are you ok? Clearly not because the Rays offered him a deal and he rejected it for more money with the Dodgers.

          Just weak arguments all around.

Darren – Mookie signed a 12 year – $360,000,000 extension that was near certain to happen when the Dodgers traded for him!

….and the ‘trade’ was for Mookie’s third arbitration year at 1 year – $27,000,000…. How many teams can afford that along with the $48,000,000 still owed to David Price as the penalty for accepting Mookie. The Dodgers were the only team who could have afforded that.

@kev success means nothing when they can’t win the World Series. I don’t consider Houston/Texas small markets. Padres aren’t small. Guardians, Rays, Pirates, A’s are the true small markets. When was the last time any of them won the World Series? How many times did they even make it to the World Series? Only Royals fit that bill in 2015. Mayyybe Nationals in 2019? Dbacks made it but failed last year.

It’s not like those small markets had no chance though. I wouldn’t measure it in amount of recent World Series wins. Once you get in, you never know what could happen. The Rays and Guardians are consistently in the playoffs. The A’s were for a long stretch until they missed on a lot of moves/rebuilt. The best team doesn’t always win, as evidenced by the fact that the Dodgers have only won twice in the past idk 7 years-decade?

@Vegas, everyone knew they were buying the best talent and scouting the best personnel from other teams and paying them more long before this year. That’s why it was funny. You forget Friedman began with the Rays. Then the Dodgers just offered him more money and he was gone, poof!

They never went on a spending spree like last off-season in their recent history so of course we are gonna complain. It is what it is but we have the right to complain on deaf ears.

Yamamoto, Flaherty, Buehler, Knack = 4. Not counting Bobby Miller who they chose to send down maybe partly because he was pitching poorly. Of course, there were huge reservations about Walker and Knack, but still not accurate to say he won with two starting pitchers. But I understand the sentiment.

Only if you count fractions — and who does? After the postgame show on Fox I flipped over for more clubhouse action on SNLA. At one point they got hold of a beer-soaked Buehler and of course asked him how this felt. He said he (using a word I won’t type here) that earlier in the season he expected to get cut from the roster. That’s how much he himself anticipated being part of this. And starting the rookie Knack would have more desperate yet. So just having pitchers you call starters is not the same as going into the playoffs with a complete rotation. The Dodgers pulled off kind a miracle in this postseason. It will be talked about and analyzed for a long time.

Dave roberts should get his flowers. I’ve been critical of him but he EARNED my respect this October. Freddie/Teo/Edman/etc everyone contributed for this run.

Congratulations to the LA Dodger fans on a great team win for the championship. Dodgers played fundamentally sound baseball and the Yankees didn’t. LA was clearly the better team and deserved this title.

This sucked to watched for us because we should be going to game 6, but the Yanks gave you the game on a platter.

Poor fundamentals is a direct reflection of the manager/coaches. Boone did a decent job (for once) early in the postseason, but botched the WS. Yankees poor fundamentals has been the common theme with a Boone-led team, not the exception. Please don’t bring Boone back.

Regards to you and yours. Lots of good Dodger folks on here, and you all are cool to interact with. It’s a shame that some “fans” give the LA fanbase a bad name. We have those in NY too, obviously. Kind of like the dummy that grabbed Mookie for the baseball…

I also want to say how much I respect and appreciated Cole’s performance tonight. He was stellar and deserved better. So impressive!

Smart play. He’s cementing his legacy (despite his poor postseason performance) by winning titles…

Objectively, LA could have a dynasty not seen since the 90s Yanks.

Great front office; committed players; great player development. I did see firsthand why some wanted Dave Roberts to leave.

Dave Roberts is a cog in the front office game plan machine. Win or lose, credit or blame where it is due — to the entire organization. I’d like to think they collectively have figured out some things this year that have eluded them in previous postseasons. If so you could be right about the potential for an LA dynasty.

Clip – Sorry to bring this up but the Dodgers remind me of the 2009 Yankees. They had just given big dollar contracts to free agents Sabathia, ARod, Burnett, Teixeira, Hawkins, Pettitte and Mariano and quickly won the WS. Everyone expected a new Yankee dynasty. Didn’t quite work out that way.

Treinen would have been ‘pulled’ automatically for the early on in his career version of Dave Roberts under the direction of front office analytics….eg Rich Hill. being pulled when he was dealing in the post season.
Now Roberts has more power and autonomy to manage as he sees it, and the dictatorial analytics has disappeared to some degree.

          “pure fantasy”?

How long have you been watching baseball, definitely not long.

Furthermore, it was discussed by people with better ‘knowledge’ than you, and they are Ortiz, Rodriguez, & Jeter, I am sure they’re talking “pure fantasy” as well, and they all said the same thing about Roberts how he has been given more latitude by the ‘powers that be’.

Last but not least “norcalblue”, you’re an alleged Dodgers ‘fan’. You obviously don’t have a clue about how the front office dictated analytics, and Roberts was forced to take Hill out in 2017 in game 2 with 4ip 7k and 1er and 60 pitches.
baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN201710250.shtm… It must have been a little league game and they were saving his arm for after the World Series which they lost in Game 7, oh, and they lost this game 2 in 2017, a crucial bad decision.. The fact that you used the words “pure fantasy” is your domain, as you’re entirely delusional and wouldn’t have a clue. Clown is going to clown.

          “Sheeeessh”.

Fred – Very true. Roberts said his decision to keep him in the game was made by listening to him and looking into his eyes. That is real baseball.

And Teoscar nailed it when he said making contact is important, put the ball in play and good things happen. Screw the analytical belief that strikeouts are no worse than any other outs. My team collapsed in part because they struck out a ton swinging from their heels at every pitch.

You can’t give extra outs in a regular season game, let alone a World Series, diabolical errors from the Yankees. Game 1 and Game 5 handed to the Dodgers gift wrapped.

Well done Dodgers, maybe they’ll win 2025 as well, as it’s going to be hard to compete with that roster and the players that will be added.

Gotta imagine Cole is going to be kicking himself all offseason. The first two errors of that inning can be just lumped into the category of bad luck or bad defense. His mental error of not covering first base. Wow.

Judge dropped a routine fly ball. In contrast, Volpe had a somewhat tough play because Ki-ke Hernandez was basically in the path of a throw from Volpe to 3rd. I agree with calling it an error, but it was not a horrific one like Judge. And yes, Cole did not move to 1B. But rather than blaming it all on Yankee defense, give Freeman and Teoscar their dues for getting big hits, to Mookie, Tommy and Ki-ke for good base-running.

Of course, never give a team an extra chance, let alone three. I saw the Red Sox blow a handful of games last year because of sloppy infield defense.

Just saying, of the three major mistakes the yankees made in the 5th I think Cole’s was the one I thought was the one that was the most avoidable. He should have been sprinting to first until he would see Rizzo wave him off… especially with a runner like Betts.

This was a tough one. I recently moved back home to NY to care for a sick relative fighting stage 3 ovarian cancer and watching this Yankees playoff run made our family somewhat happy for the first time in a minute. Losing this way was a gut punch and it makes me sick seeing Aaron Boone continuously make managerial brainfarts and coming back year after year when Girardi was basically let go for much, much less.

Anyway, congrats to the loyal Dodgers fans on here. This one will sting for a minute.

Yeah, I’m still a little unhappy that so many people are trying to call those fans heroes. I remember being in Fenway this year and watching a hit down the line, a fan grabbed it and it was ruled a double. The fan stood with the ball proudly getting pats on the back. I was livid, the right fielder was way out of position at the time… had the idiot fan not stopped it, it would have been a triple.

Point being, these are not the days of Jeffrey Maier and these were not young boys. It was just pure disrespect for the game and even more disrespect for your own team.

Anybody see that Southpark episode where all the teams in the Little League tournament tried to lose because “baseball is boring” and they just wanted to go home and play video games? I think that’s what happened with the Yankees.
“Does anybody really want to fly all the way across the country again? I’m tired. Plus, what are the odds?”
“Well, I’ve been invited to Madonna’s Halloween party tomorrow night. Beyonce is going to be there!”
“Fat Tony says there’s some nice checks all around if we blow this game.”
“My wife has been bugging me to take her to Bloomingdales. So, if we don’t go back to LA, fine by me.”
And so it went. And the Yankees resembled the Southpark team with Judge as Kyle, Volpe as Butters, and Cole as Eric. And add Aaron Boone as Kenny. Sure to be “killed off” the Yankees.
