The Mariners have won at least 85 games in each of the last four seasons, but the club’s wild card berth and subsequent ALDS appearance in 2022 marks Seattle’s only trip to the playoffs in that stretch. This year’s squad won 85 games on the heels of the sport’s best pitching staff, but the Mariners’ lineup struggled badly for much of the season, leading to another year without any October baseball.
Amidst increasing fan unrest over this lack of success, team chairman/CEO John Stanton preached patience, as Stanton said in an interview with MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer. “I am as disappointed as any fan we have that this team hasn’t been in the playoffs in two years,” Stanton said. “I believe we’re making progress. I can certainly understand why fans are frustrated when they hear me say that, but I believe that we are on track to have a team that consistently wins over a long period of time. I intend this team to win, have a winning record every season, be in the playoffs most seasons, and we will win a World Series.”
In regards to this quest for Seattle’s first baseball championship, Stanton confirmed a Seattle Times report from last month which stated that Jerry Dipoto will continue as the top decision-maker in the front office. Stanton didn’t provide specifics on Dipoto’s contract status, or any hints about how many more years remain on the extension Dipoto signed in September 2021. As Kramer notes, it would appear as though Dipoto is still working under that previous contract and hasn’t signed a new deal, given that the Mariners made public announcements when Dipoto inked his previous two extensions with the team.
“I believe in Jerry, and Jerry is going to continue to lead our baseball organization into the future as the president of baseball operations — and I believe passionately that he is the right guy to do that,” Stanton said.
Another Seattle Times report (again from Ryan Divish and Adam Jude) earlier this week stated the Mariners would have a higher payroll next season, even if such an increase wasn’t expected to be enough for the M’s to accommodate a major free agent signing. According to RosterResource, the Mariners finished 2024 with a payroll of roughly $144.8MM, and have a little under $95MM on the books for 2025, though that latter figure doesn’t account for the projected salaries owed to Seattle’s large arbitration class of 12 players. This might not leave the M’s too far beneath the $144.8MM figure based on internal salaries alone, let alone the necessary upgrades that will be needed to the roster, particularly on the hitting side.
While Stanton said the payroll would indeed be on the rise, he unsurprisingly declined to state exactly how much extra Dipoto’s front office would have available to spend this winter. “I think our draft, develop and trade philosophy certainly doesn’t preclude free agents,” Stanton said, though Dipoto has only signed two free agents (Robbie Ray and Mitch Garver) to multi-year contracts during his nine seasons as Seattle’s top baseball exec.
“I think Jerry’s done an extraordinary job of trading….He’s been prolific in doing that, and very effective in doing that,” Stanton said. “And I think that that is an important part of that philosophy. And if you’re effective in trading, it seems to me that that means you don’t have to do free agency deals in the same numbers.”
The Mariners’ takeover of ROOT Sports regional sports network was seen as the chief reason for the club’s relative lack of spending last winter, and while Stanton said this was a “misconception,” he later added that the Mariners’ broadcast situation is “not going to be nearly the concern that it was this past year.”
Stanton said the M’s haven’t yet decided on their broadcasting plans for 2025, as while the Mariners aren’t one of the teams tied up in contracts with the Diamond Sports Group and Bally Sports Networks, DSG’s ongoing bankruptcy process is still a chief factor in how the Mariners will choose to proceed with their own programming going forward. In terms of deciding to continue with ROOT Sports or to perhaps turn to MLB itself to broadcast Mariners games, the result of the DSG case “will allow us to know what other teams are doing, and that will give us some sense as to what it is that MLB would have to sell, basically,” Stanton said. “If there are a lot of teams involved, then they’ve got an ability to deliver to distributors, such as the cable companies, a broader set of markets, and therefore something more valuable to those distributors.”
In the broader sense, Stanton noted that Seattle is “roughly the 15th-largest market in baseball. We’re pretty much smack dab in the middle in terms of the size of the market, and that means that we’re about average in our ability to generate revenue and to do those things. I think, to me, the word that we use a lot — and our objective — is to have a sustainable franchise over a long period of time.”
Stanton also spoke publicly for the first time about the Mariners’ firing of manager Scott Servais in August, which the chairman described as “a gut-wrenching, difficult decision” on Dipoto’s part. Servais’ dismissal and the subsequent hiring of Dan Wilson as the new manager came after “a very long series of conversations. I asked Jerry questions as to why he wanted to make the change, with respect to Scott, why he wanted to bring Dan in, and I was certainly satisfied by his thinking on it.”
Servais also infamously learned of his firing from a news update before he heard from Dipoto or Stanton, which Stanton expressed “deep regret” over, “and that is a source of frustration for everyone in this building.” Stanton implied that he didn’t know where the leak came from, but “I am highly confident it didn’t come from within this building or from our ownership group, because I know there was a very small circle of people who are aware of it, and I have a high level of confidence that those people did not say anything.”

“15th biggest media market”…That really mattered in 1968, but Washington, Oregon & Idaho(often considered one market in business)have less people than just the top half(Norcal)of California.
“Media markets” mattered when television was broadcast over the air, but nowadays all that matters is how many eyeballs are potentially in your region.

Exactly Good Vibes-
If the majority Owner Chris Larson were to speak out about the state of this current project it would go something like this:
“I’d like to say thank you to the fans, a very big thank you for allowing us to have one long and continual rebuild since 2018-2019. That 2018 roster restructure gave us a blueprint on how to reap a massive amount of cash. The goal of our MLB season now each year, is not to win a World Series. Instead the goal is to reap maximum profits for the shareholders while we hide behind the phrases “drafting developing and trading,” “mid market team,” and “making progress.”
The whole idea of rebuilds (tanking) and relocations for Sports Franchises absolutely disgusts me. What’s the endgame here?
Samuel
“The whole idea of rebuilds (tanking) and relocations for Sports Franchises absolutely disgusts me.”
Well, the relocations seem to be ending.
However, rebuilds are not tanking. They seem to have worked out fine for most of the teams in the playoffs this year.
Some dummy once said: “it’s not the money you spend, it’s how it’s spent”. Give me a break.
Maybe Jerry can do another teardown and build it back up in 2 years again. Did you know he was making trades from his hospital bed during the last one?!? Sure, MLB is a business. No reason it can’t be entertaining. Especially if one doesn’t understand the sport of baseball. A mater of priorities.
good vibes only
Rebuilding and Tanking aren’t really the same thing in my opinion. The M’s absolutely needed to rebuild, but they’re kind of like the guy in my dynasty league that is always building this Death Star of prospects but never wins because it’s always under construction.
The relocation issue is something else entirely. John Fisher is a total scumbag and MLB should be ashamed of how this went down. A’s fans deserve better.

Both of you- Samuel and Good Vibes, my post re: Seattle’s ‘restructuring’ in 2019. I find interesting and curious, instead of commenting on my points specific to Seattles rebuild you both choose to correct me on my general belief (flippant comment) that rebuilding and tanking are essentially the same thing. An Interesting response that is a good example of conceptual semantics.
I’d reply to your concept: ask a Pittsburgh Pirate fans if the concept of rebuilding and tanking are the same thing. I wonder how many Pirates fans will disagree with your take on the concept.
Samuel you say rebuilds have worked for a couple teams in this year’s playoffs. To that I’d say- yes (2) x 86 win “rebuilding” AL teams earned a ticket to this year’s WC series. What if they are bounced after the WC stage? What if they have (like Seattle) 2 x sub 90 win seasons in 2025 and 2026? Will that be enough to make the Playoffs? It wasn’t for Seattle in 2023 and 24. The point is there is no guarantee that a rebuilding teams in the 2024 playoffs will continue to have more success in the next few yrs. The M’s are proof of that. The Pirates and Reds are also proof of that. Did the Seattle rebuild work out? PIT? CIN? If a team chooses to lose for multiple years before it can have winning seasons with young players on cheap salaries – is one WC appearance enough to justify a roster rebuild?
good vibes only
I would argue that the current state of many currently good teams is worth the rebuilds. BAL/CIN/SEA/PIT all have some of the most exciting young talent in the sport and the arrows are up. CHC ended the curse by tanking. Tanking isn’t really as much of a rebuild accelerant anymore due to the lottery. I doubt we will need to ‘tear it down’ like we did in 2018/2019 because the development pipeline is much better now. Jerry is very good at draft & develop.
Is one WC appearance enough though? No.
Is rebuilding inherently bad? Also no.
ayrbhoy
1. Let’s scrap our definitions of a rebuild-There is no simple way to discuss that concept in 2-3 sentences within a comment section. It’s hard for me to talk about Rebuilding with American MLB fans- you guys seem to accept that it’s okay to do that. I grew up in a Country where our Football (soccer) teams would get absolutely pole axed if they said this to their fans-

2. I’m going to bring the comment back around to the main topic: the Seattle Mariners. I’d like to get feedback from SEA fans on this question-
If the Mariners have 1 more Playoff appearance through the 2028 season will the 2019 Rebuild be considered a success? The 2019 Rebuild will have obviously provided 2 visits to the Playoffs.

It’s already a failure.
The point was to be a World Series contender in the short(est)-term and long-term.
They’ve blown the short-term. The question now is if they can improvise and salvage a year or two while they still have this core.
ayrbhoy
100% agreed. The start of that failure can be traced back to when the Org. decided to change their restructure strategy mid-rebuild.
The original blueprint for the SEA rebuild did NOT include the catch phrase- “Draft Develop and Trade.” (DDT)
People forget the SEA Org talked about the 2021 and 2022 FA classes (abundant in impact hitters) as being one of the key factors in making their decision to initiate a rebuild when they did.
That (financially driven) decision to change their rebuild strategy to a (DDT) policy has cost them dearly imo.
Stevil
To be fair, Dipoto always implied that they would build the core through draft and development, even if he didn’t say it directly. But what gets me is that his excuse for avoiding free agent stars was always that free agency was best used to ‘augment’ the roster; make the finishing touches.
Well, when better to augment the roster than after the 2022 season? They had a golden opportunity and he actually had the nerve to respond to fan criticism by stating that (paraphrasing) “…frankly, the free agent class wasn’t that good”.
Ridiculous.
And since then, we’ve seen them desperately try to ‘Frankenstein’ a roster with whatever leftover parts they could get. They ended up with a lineup full of hitters that didn’t fit the profile he created himself with the ‘control-the-zone’ mantra.
I realize not all of that is on him, he had last-minute changes to the budget and probably multiple other stipulations, but here we are, sitting out the playoffs again, and no closer to real World Series contention than they were in 2018–before the rebuild.
And they have just a year or two before they have to commit to a new direction, because they have limited control of this core.

Yep, keep pocketing your 70 million in profits a year, while the value of the team increases 12% annually. Nice little ATM you got there, Stanton.

The Mariners are not the presence they once were in Japan which should not be the case with Ichiro in the front office and just drafting and signing international players seems to be secondary for the team. It’s fine that DiPoto likes to trade but you cannot fix every need that way while ignoring free agency beyond the fringes. This is a team that should be able to afford a Juan Soto or a Pete Alonso
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Realistically Seattle isn’t New York or Los Angeles so I’m fine with not affording Soto
But Alonso or bregman or Santander should be realistic targets but they aren’t

That’s fair, and I generally agree, but attracting free agent hitters isn’t simple, either.
Seattle has an awkward park that needs adjustments and the organization hasn’t shown they’re serious about a championship.
I don’t blame free agents for steering clear.

I would think more than park and willingness of a teams, in this case Seattle’s owner can play into how bad/if some want to play there, or other cities.
Now i do like that team and watch them regularly, but how popular with ptential FA can it be when a portion of the cities was over ran by lawless thugs, allowed to stay that way for months, private property destroyed with -0- consequences?
It’s a simple question to ask anyone moving to certain places where this happened and we have heard nothing but gaslighting and bs excuses made since for the criminals. I can see legit questions regarding why some would wish to move to certain places. sadly.. Some do not.

I know JD Martinez said No to the Mariners as well. But one big reason guys say No that we can’t do much about is the amount of travel the team has to do. Mariners are #1 or #2 every year in the amount of air miles flown, and that alone is a big deterrent to guys wanting to play here.

@Ignorant sob
I do agree with that theory regarding the travel. It probably matters a lot more to short term signees like JD Martinez than longer term signings.
If you’re just gonna get a 1-2 year deal there’s no point in uprooting your family or self to Seattle as a home base. So then they’re basically on the road 100% on top of all the flight miles between series. Brutal.

And one of the main reasons Nelson Cruz signed is Robbie Cano lobbied hard for him. From what I understand If Robbie wasn’t in SeA Cruz would not have signed

Am positive that many of the new Japanese players in the MLB had candid conversations with Ichiro about the Mariners’ philosophy. Afterwards, players such as Ohtani lost any desire to play for the M’s and chose teams willing to go big to get a World Series bid.
Years ago, I used to get irritated at teams such as the Yankees, Dodgers, and Braves that seemingly “bought” their way into the playoffs.
Now, I feel more amicable towards that strategy.
I too hope DiPoto is more favorable towards the free agent market this offseason.

I’m with you kellin. I secretly wish that all M’s articles on this site would have Comments Closed because reading most Mariners “fans” comments is a truly cringe worthy affair, so I normally skip them. ayrbhoy
Seahawks fans are not that bad simply because they have an owner who is fully 100% committed to winning….
Mariners fans are a special breed – they’re a bit like the Chicago Cubs and BOS fans (minus the self deprecating humor) before their teams won their WS rings. They’re a little cursed, one often hears the phrase “same old Mariners” after anything bad happens to the team. Why? It’s an Org that has made so many bad trades over the years half of them belong on the Top 10 worst MLB trades in History. Literally …google worst MLB trades. Then there’s the losing seasons. Before this current administration….All the terrible drafts.

Higher payroll for us means that we won’t trade the guys getting raises but will still probably be limited to 1 year deals or lateral trades
My guess is we sign Jose iglesias to a 1 year deal, trade garver and a prospect (say Ryan bliss) to a random team like the Chicago teams, and trade for Ryan McMahon or Brett baty or Jake burger
Can we please get a DH?
What a sad group of 3B targets listed there. McMahon was awful in the 2nd half (54 wRC+ lowering his year long wRC+ to 89). Burger is awful defensively. Baty hasn’t shown he can hit big league pitching. None of those three move the needle on the Rojas/Moore platoon as is.

sad tormented neglected mariners fan
That’s why I mentioned those players and not Bregman or arenado or max muncy
It would be a mariners thing to do to get (at best) average players that become a lot worse
ayrbhoy
They will probably do what they have done often since Jerry came on board:
Try to acquire 2 INFers via some sort of large trade package….while simultaneously shedding their 2 worst contracts- Polanco and Haniger.
While I would love to see an improved offense I would be happy with some version of the team’s offense from mid August onwards. I don’t think the lineup needs a major overhaul.
If Brash Santos and Muñoz (and the Rotation) stays healthy for the majority of 2025 I think the current M’s roster (minus Haniger) (with a Bliss/Polanco 2B share) and (J Turner/Raley 1B share) imo makes it to the Playoffs in 2025
wayneroo
There is no way on earth Colorado is going to trade McMahon. They’ve nearly said as much.
Can we please get a DH?
Nobody should want him either. He is due $44M over the next 3 years for below average production from 3B. He was a 1.9 WAR player last year on the back of 2 hot months. Otherwise, he is a 30 year old 3B with decent defense and career 29% K rate. I don’t see those next 3 years looking good at all. It’s an ugly present and future for the Rockies…

I’ve often thought that Seattle should try doing what Detroit did after they moved to Comerica. It was too big for homers so they tried getting guys with speed and guys who were gap to gap doubles guys, rather then pure sluggers.
Recent power guys they’ve brought in have been a relative bust (Teo, Garver)
T-Mobile park has long been a bad hitters park, not so much for size but for several other reasons including the marine air and some issues with the back drop.
A lineup with hitters similar to Luis Arráez or Bo Bichette, guys who hit a lot but with less focus on power, could generate runs through rallys. That scrappy offense combined with their pitching could be enough to get them not only back in the playoffs, but actually winning once there.
The Royals used this approach for their World Series in ’15 (although their good pitchers were in the pen)
Can we please get a DH?
After they moved in the fences in 2017, TMobile became a roughly average park for home runs, but dropped to dead last for singles, doubles and triples. It has an incredibly small outfield that leads to many line drives that would be extra bases at other parks into easy outs at TMobile. This, coupled with the batters eye and a wind tunnel that adds break to pitches, leads to it being very hard to consistently make successful contact. Therefore, pivoting to a strategy that requires chaining hits together in the hardest park to get hits to score, rather than focusing on walks and bombs, is not likely to improve the offensive output.
Canuckleball
I hadn’t look closely at the park stuff. Last time I did, it was bad for homers. Didn’t realize it had changed. Thanks for the heads up.
Ignore my idea then. It probably wouldn’t work.

Guys it’s not the park. Their home/away splits are awesome at home, they suck on the road.
The lineup is below average. The ownership group refuses to invest in FA bats. This clown says it right in the article that their whole strategy is draft/develop/trade. Jerry plays a shell game of mediocre bats and he’s not very good at it.

That’s interesting; but one flaw with Seattle’s vaunted starting pitching is that they give up a lot of ding dongs. Now I haven’t gotten into the home/road breakdown on if Seattle pitchers give up a majority of those ding dongs on the road; but if it’s nearly an even split then that should say something about how the ball flies at T-Mobile…if our opponents can do it, we can do it.
Can we please get a DH?
It’s the trade off they make to avoid walking anyone. At home, that trade off is easily worth it because a solo shot isn’t very damaging. On the road, where more balls in play can lead to more non-homer hits they struggle more.
bloomquist4hof
Not sure why I did all this, or if it means anything, but here goes.
For past 3 year courtesy of fangraphs and a spreadsheet.
MLB Avergage: HR/Batted Ball at Home (by pitching staff): 4.4%
MLB Avergage: HR/Batted Ball Away (by pitching staff): 4.6%
MLB Avergage: HR/Batted Ball at Home (by batters): 4.6%
MLB Avergage: HR/Batted Ball Away (by batters): 4.4%
SEA Avergage: HR/Batted Ball at Home (by pitching staff): 4.5%
SEA Avergage: HR/Batted Ball Away (by pitching staff): 4.7%
SEA Avergage: HR/Batted Ball at Home (by batters): 5.0%
SEA Avergage: HR/Batted Ball at Away (by batters): 5.1%
So yes, above average HR/Batted Ball by the pitching staff. Once the park factors are accounted for fairly even on home vs. road.
Statcast park factors for the last 3 years show HR at 96 , which not as extreme as the other offensive categories especially XBH (2B at 83 and 3B at 59) and strikeouts at 115.
baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/statcast-park-f…
Also seems Seattle hits more home runs per batted ball as a team than average but walks and strikes out at an above average clip, but the strikeouts seem to be largely a function of the park. They do seem to be getting players who can walk and have above average power.
good vibes only
Thanks for doing that @bloom!
2024 splits are even wilder than the 3 year trend. Mariners pitchers walked more, struck out less, and gave up more home runs on the road than at home by a significant margin. Idk how that breaks down between starters and bullpen.
How do you attribute strikeouts to the park though?
bloomquist4hof
Batters have complained about their ability to see the ball there since they moved to the park. The batter eye in Seattle is apparently one of the worst, the way it’s angled is in the issue, however I know some hitters have stated the opposite. Nelson Cruz comes to mind. I think I read once that Trout likes hitting there.
Here’s what one recent Mariner who has issues there has to say:
sports.mynorthwest.com/1778540/examining-ex-seattl…

Didn’t realize you could filter the park factor by indivual stats. Savant is so cool. Thanks for sharing the link too.
That seems like it would be an easy fix if they wanted to address it as a signability issue.
bloomquist4hof
Here’s the other link I used. It’s the splits leaderboard on Fangraphs. It can do like Home/Away and SP/RP and Handedness, change years, do it at a team, player or league level and by pitcher or hitter, and filter on things like leverage, weather (wind, temp, air density, barometric pressure), elevation, park type, inning, batting order, base/out state, count, and defensive alignment.
fangraphs.com/leaders/splits-leaderboards?splitArr…
bloomquist4hof
I think it’s an issue with signability, but the bigger issue has to be the lack of competitive spending. The Mariner’s aren’t offering what it takes to bring them to Seattle. Also in general, if they had a better team I’m thinking it would be more likely to sway some players if the offers are similar.
good vibes only
I’m definitely with you on that one!
Stevil
We’ve been hearing the same speech from the front office and ownership since the 2019 offseason.
They are sustaining mediocrity. But they’ve done nothing to suggest they’re serious about a World Series, and as of now, they have three years with this core to get there.
Seattle is a mid-market team, Stanton isn’t wrong about that, but they’ve been they’ve been one of the most profitable organizations in baseball since the 2022 season. They really have no excuses for this halfassery.

I was not a fan of Servais, but Stanton’s response to the ‘leak’ proves you are correct on that. There is zero accountability in that front office and it starts at the top.
Absolutely nothing has changed with this organization – the Kevin Mather culture of toxic mediocrity is alive and well.
Sad, because I do believe there IS character and leadership in that clubhouse.

Stevil AND good vibes, both spot on. Love your comments. It starts at the top and works it’s way down. When you strive for 54 percent, this is the result…mediocrity.
Stevil
A lot of people don’t know there was a second Mathers video. I had the link, but lost it. Basically, it was just more of the same boasting, but it made me despise him even more.
bloomquist4hof
They need to push the payroll simple as that. a budget of 180m-200m with flexibility to add at the deadline and bump a little each of 26 and 27, ie be willing to flirt with the luxury tax threshold if it makes sense, and make hard trades from the farm, and they have a good shot at putting together a real championship caliber team within the next 3 years which is likely the window they have.

Well said @bloom

Actions speak louder than words, Mr. Stanton. And you keep saying the same words over and over. I’ll believe it when I see it, and maybe not even then since M’s fans have been teased over and over.
hoof hearted
Most owners get bad mouthed by the fans- its just noise. However, gilbert is around for atleast 3 more years- before he’s a FA. Cal and George have 4 years of arb. Then theres Bryce and Brian. They could be thinking to themselves “if they can’t build an offense to support the really good pitching-I might look for a team that will; when I become a FA”.
C Us Sink
There is rumor I heard on local radio going around last off-season when Cal was playing golf with some of these guys. One of these players joked that Cal is a future former Mariner catcher. They aren’t thinking about looking for other teams when they hit the market, they are already openly joking about leaving as soon as they are able.
hllywdjff
Seattle has a top 5 per capita income in the US so there is no excuse for this team not to spend money it’s been proven over and over fans will show up if they win and the team will make money and be a success on the field…Win win for both sides
BabyBoyBlueDiamond
You don’t think it precludes free agents??? Are you &@$%ing kidding me?!?! You FINALLY make the playoffs for the first time in 2 decades, get swept by Houston, STILL haven’t scored a run in the playoffs AT HOME since Stan Javier did it in 2001, and the following off season, you go out and do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING when that year’s free agent class was very strong!
“Our draft/develop/trade philosophy doesn’t preclude free agents…”. NUMBSKULL! That style of philosophy ABSOLUTELY precludes free agents (it says in the very name and description) and you’ve shown that predominantly since you’ve been in charge; no longer being the lead of the minority owners who had to fight Nintendo when they wanted to spend more. Now you don’t have to fight anyone. You make the decisions now and it shows.
I find it hilarious that “he’s frustrated”. That’d be like me punching a wall and then being frustrated my hand hurts. That’d be like me flipping off the police then shooting a gun at them and being frustrated for being arrested for it! This is on you, you old sack of garbage! You’ve steered your sheep into a reef when signs all around said “DON’T GO THIS WAY!”
Someone save us from this incompetent “genius”.
BigRedMachine
15th biggest market? So what…. Stanton is a joke. Always an excuse. That is not what it is about financially.. It is about attendance numbers and cable deals and the Mariners do fine with both. When they took three years to do their rebuild they promised to spend after. “Bare with us, We will spend once we are rebuilt.”. They have not spent. They have made a lot of money. . They are penny pinching, and forcing Justin and Jerry to be creative to get new players and the players they end up with are on their down side. This methodology is on Stanton. He tells the GM’s what they have to work with. Sell the team. They need to bring in a difference making Bat at 3B, a difference making 2B and or DH and 2-3 relief pitchers, one of which is a lights out 8th or 9th inning guy. OK, your too cheap to bring in a free agent on a long term deal, Seen too many teams, and the M’s as well, get burned. Fine, Trade for two great bats, that perhaps make good money, and take on salary that way. You have a terrific minor league system to trade from…Josh Naylor anyone for DH-1B. Ketel Marte at 2B? Yes, you must have willing trade partners but get players who are great NOW! Not three years ago.
WA Man
Well that’s certainly one way to destroy and crush every last bit of hope a Mariners fan might have had for this team. Wouldn’t absolute travesty you of an interview from an ownership.
Simply stunning.

Mariners may own their RSN but recent events left the ballclub exposed. The Seattle Kraken and Portland Trail Blazers have left Root Sports to start their own streaming/linear TV packages. Root also will lose Gonzaga men’s basketball when that school joins the Pac-12 Conference in a couple of years.
Zippy the Pinhead
Root Sports is what happens when a company thinks its fans are stupid. Their choice was to drop the price for carriers (like Xfinity), take a smaller profit, and gain more goodwill from fans. It chose to raise the cost, force a move to exorbitant premium packages, and cause even more cable cutting. Next year, the Kraken will be on free, over-the-air, must-carry broadcast TV. Smart way to increase long-term love of the product, even when in-person tickets are pricy. The Mariners care little about their community, their fans, or their cheap reputation – only their short-term profits. Shameful.
ChuckyNJ
Fanboys think broadcast TV is “free”. Has not, is not, and never will.
Here’s a cold hard fact: The more people who cut the cord, the less money TV stations get from the legacy providers such as Xfinity. And if the Kraken’s station gets dropped in a carriage dispute …
good vibes only
I don’t expect the Mariners to give it away for free, but unlike most teams they own and have full control of their broadcast. They aren’t caught up in the Bally/Diamond mess. Their ownership group consists of largely tech/communications billionaires.
My main question is, with unique control and industry expertise at the top, why couldn’t they figure out how to go direct to fans OTT and avoid the revenue losses from cable cutting altogether by swimming with the tide instead of against it?
Zippy the Pinhead
Sorry, Chucky, but you’re only partly correct. On cable, must-carry stations cannot be dropped because they offer local emergency services. The Kraken will be on the NBC affiliate KING (and its sister broadcast station KONG) in Seattle, so Xfinity will have every game on its cheapest tier. Satellite and streaming are another story – that’s where carriage disputes can happen.
That said, anyone with a digital antenna won’t have to pay any monthly charge at all, assuming they’re in range. That’s what free means. The revenue comes wholly from advertising, just like the pre-cable days. They’ll be on Channel 5.1 or 16.1.
PrincessYuki
I trust Jerry too now.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Can we have Comments Closed on all Mariners related stories from now on? God these comments are embarrassing.
C Us Sink
The comments show how embarrassing of an organization they own. Sell the team.
longoverdue1977
Stanton said, “I believe that we are on track to have a team that consistently wins over a long period of
time.” Yes, having a consistently winning team like the Astros in recent years would be great (though they had exited the postseason early this year), but please give us at least one great season first.
oscar gamble
How would the leak come from elsewhere??? Nobody outside the building knew about the firing unless some front office person told them.
Zippy the Pinhead
Man, Oscar, I miss that fro.
Smokey the bear
I alway stood up for management until last year. I believe in developing players and bringing them to the majors, like the last bunch that arrived. I also believe there is a limit how much we can pay free agents. Now with being said, we were led to believe that during the last rebuild, when the payroll was low, they when spend at the appropriate time. They did not do that and we fell short AGAIN. Why do the Mariners always have cheap owners? Sell the team to the numerous billionaires in the state, that aren’t afraid to spend money. I don’t believe a word outta the owners mouth.
McGrundle
Besides the park, travel, and all that, no decent player will come to Seattle because there is nothing to do. The women are ugly and overly opinionated.

Hahaha WHAT!?
Did you just wander in from Capt Robert Scott’s Antarctic Expedition?
I too like to roam the bustling city with beautiful mute women

Play this game the next time you are at an airport outside of Washington or Oregon: Don’t look at the reader boards and guess which terminal is headed to Seattle or Portland. When you spot the pasty, no muscle tone, green hair, tatted up, face pierced, legs unshaved, earth tone wearing, patchouli smelling feminazis congregated, you’ll know it’s Seattle bound.
TheGr8One
Seattle can’t attract the FA hitters some of you are naming. Hitters die when they get to Seattle and live again when they leave (Suarez, Teoscar, Winker). 100% need to fix the outfield configuration and batters eye. Teoscar Hernandez said it’s the worst he’s ever seen at any level. He’s Dominican he’s seen batters eyes that are two toned plywood and says Seattles the worst ever. Take that to heart and fix the problem. One of the reasons our pitchers are so effective is the other guy can’t see the ball either. Draft develop and trade is a fancy way of saying force them to play here cause they won’t choose to
