Offseason Outlook: Los Angeles Angels

By Anthony Franco | October 3, 2024 at 11:50am CDT

The Angels are coming off the worst season in franchise history. The farm system isn't highly regarded, while the team didn't get much out of its two highest-paid players. No team has a longer active playoff drought and that's unlikely to change in the next season or two.

Sign 6 of the top ten FA at over-market prices.
      Improve the Farm System.
      Go 80-82.

So these are subscriber only articles now? Is that a timed exclusivity thing, like for the first week, or is that just how they’re going to be forever? If it’s the latter, then what a load of crap. These are some of my favorite articles each year and they’ve always been free, to add a price tag to them now is just dumb. I mean, is the site really doing that poorly?

They’ve always had subscriber specific articles. They decided a few months ago to make them visible so non-subscribers can get a small taste of what they are missing in an effort to encourage more subscriptions.

I don’t recall the offseason outlook articles ever being subscriber exclusives before this one. I too hope this isn’t how they’ll be in the future.

I’m aware they’ve had subscriber exclusive articles for a while now, and that’s never bothered me. What bothers me is taking a series of articles that has been a site staple every year and locking them behind a paywall without warning. And why stop at these in that case? Are “The Opener” and the podcast going to be paywalled too? What about every weekly chat instead of just one?

And as far as giving people, “a small taste of what they’re missing,” a single three sentence paragraph that doesn’t tell you anything about what the article actually entails isn’t going to encourage anyone who reads it to get a subscription. It’s like if movie trailers were limited exclusively to showing 10 second teasers. At least unblock the first few paragraphs so new people can see what these articles are actually about, because no one is going to read three sentences about how bad the Angels suck and think the article has anything more informative to tell them than a random Xwitter post that says the same thing.

Yeah, I get it. I didn’t think to look at the type of article. I figured they might eventually increase the number of subscriber only article categories. Eventually the free content will dwindle to crap I suppose and the search for a new baseball site will begin.

Joe – “I too feel like everyone should provide with analysis for free, but unfortunately, bills need to be paid.”

That’s not exactly the situation as MLBTR gets money from advertisers on it’s “free content” version of their platform. So although it’s free to the viewer, MLBTR is getting paid.

      No Free Articles For Yu!

In case you haven’t figured it out MLBTR is a business that pays the writers of these “favorite articles.” That said, I’m open to reconsider my opinion if and when you tell your employer that you’re willing to do whatever it is you do for a living for free. If you’re not up for that well that is just dumb.

      Sheesh………some people.

Let me put this in terms you can understand. Let’s say a restaurant offers free water for years. There are sodas and other soft drinks available for a a few bucks, but the water is still free. Then one day you visit this restaurant and find they now charge the same for water that they do for a soft drink. This is not because the water is expensive and hurting the bottom line, it’s to make you shrug and just pay the full price for a soda, because it’s the same as the water anyway. If you think that’s a normal business practice, then MLBTR is being run exactly how you’d like, which is unfortunate for anyone with more than one functioning brain cell.

These articles, specifically the Offseason Outlook articles, have never cost money until this year. There was never any indication that they would start costing money until they slapped the price tag on them and told people to pay up. You act like MLBTR wasn’t able to pay their writers a fair wage for their work until they started charging for articles, and given this site has been around far longer than their paid content, that’s not the case. Charging for services is fine, I’m a contractor myself. Charging people for things you always did for free and never affected your bottom line anyway for no discernable reason is dumb.

Yes Yu, that’s exactly right. The other tactic companies use now is charge the same price but reduce the quantity you’re getting. Orange Juice is a prime example of this. It used to be 4 bucks for a half gallon. Then when no one was looking, it was 4 bucks for 58 ounces, then 52 ounces, and now some companies are down to 48 ounces of orange juice for that same 4 bucks. I don’t buy orange juice anymore.

Now I’ll put something in terms you can understand…….if the pretend restaurant you’re referring to started charging for water that once upon a time was free I would simply stop going there or, if the food and ambiance was of such good caliber that I deemed paying for a glass of water to be a small price to pay so that I could continue to enjoy all they had to offer I would pay for the water…….easy peasy. One thing that I wouldn’t do is whine about it, especially in/on a public forum.

It’s really not that hard and I say again, some people.

Is that why you’re a front office subscriber? Oh wait, you’re not, or it would appear next to your name. So really, you’re just defending MLBTR’s idiotic business practices because you’d probably defend gas stations collectively doubling their prices for no reason at all. “Oh they’re private businesses, they can do whatever. Don’t like it, don’t drive a car.”

Tim’s reasoning doesn’t even make sense. He says no one reads these articles anyway, so if that’s the case then nobody is going to subscribe to their service specifically for these articles. It’s fine though, I can tell you’re a boomer so accountability is a foreign concept to you. Hope your kids don’t resent you when you leave them nothing.

Given that my work as a contractor supports my family and will put my kids through college, I think my parents are actually quite proud of me. I said this back in July and still think it makes some sense to trade Trout to Philly for Walker and Castellanos. Some money could exchange hands as well but what that would do would increase the Phillies chances the next couple years while hurting them long term. And the Angels are even more screwed the next couple years but at least they can move on after 2026 with Rendons contract also ending at that time.

Trout has said multiple times he doesn’t want to play for Philadelphia. If he wanted to be traded it would be to the Dodgers. Going to the Dodgers would cause the least amount of change for him and his family. Unfortunately Artie hates the Dodgers. He would never approve a trade to them.

Pillar for some reason wasn’t traded sonhe can retire a Angel as last team played for if he follows through.

Farm would be better if they traded Ohtani Anderson Ren. No idea why they didn’t. They could have simply signed other players to replace them.

Any offer is a good offer on expiring players. You accept a fair offer for them. Lots of good and fair offers for other teams. They said they wanted to keep them and did. They didn’t want to trade them. With Ohtani doing nothing would have been better. Instead of receiving prospects they lost prospects.

I understood Ohtani. They were only 3 games out on 7/31 and it is still important to give the fans something to root for.

But keeping Anderson was insane. He had a 2.96. Flaherty and Kikuchi both got decent returns.

I’ll give you two words why they didn’t trade Ohtani: Arte Moreno. I’ll give you three why they didn’t trade Anderson: not enough value. And they didn’t trade Rengifo because he has more value (right now) to the Angels than to any potential trade partner.

I’m not sure what to make of Moniak.

With regular playing time, he hit fairly well vs RHP after June 1st.

    .245/.293/.456

His defense was solid in CF. (For some reason defensive metrics don’t like his work in the corner spots)

It seems to me that, in a market with few CF options, he could be serviceable with a decent platoon partner.

This platoon partner doesn’t even need to be an OF. It could be someone who could DH while Trout plays CF vs LHP.

Unfortunately, this type of creativity is nonexistent in Anaheim. But there IS a way to wring some value out Moniak.
