National League Non-Tenders: 11/22/24

By Darragh McDonald | November 22, 2024 at 6:09pm CDT

The deadline to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible players is tonight at 7pm CT. Here’s a rundown of the players on National League teams that have been non-tendered today. This post will be updated as more decisions are revealed. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected salaries for all players eligible for arbitration last month. All players who are non-tendered before this evening’s deadline go directly into free agency, where they’re eligible to sign with any of MLB’s 30 clubs.

Onto the transactions…

  • The Braves non-tendered outfielder Ramón Laureano, left-hander Ray Kerr, as well as right-handers Griffin Canning, Huascar Ynoa and Royber Salinas, which you can read more about here.
  • The Brewers parted ways with lefty reliever Hoby Milner, who’d been projected at $2.7MM for his final arbitration season. The typically reliable southpaw was tagged for a 4.73 ERA in 64 2/3 innings this year.
  • The Cardinals have non-tendered right-hander Adam Kloffenstein, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat (Bluesky link). The righty only just made his major league debut in 2024 and was not yet arb-eligible. He immediately becomes a free agent without being exposed to waivers.
  • The Cubs have non-tendered infielder Nick Madrigal, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN (X link). Madrigal has hit .251/.304/.312 for a 76 wRC+ over the last three seasons with the Cubs and was projected for a $1.9MM salary next year. Chicago also announced they non-tendered outfielder Mike Tauchman, which comes as a bit of a surprise after he reached base at a .357 clip this year. Patrick Wisdom, Adbert Alzolay, Brennen Davis and Trey Wingenter — all of whom were designated for assignment earlier this week — were also dropped.
  • The Diamondbacks non-tendered lefty reliever Brandon Hughes, per a club announcement. The 28-year-old southpaw allowed 16 runs over 17 2/3 big league innings this year. He wasn’t eligible for arbitration but would’ve occupied a 40-man roster spot if offered a contract.
  • The Dodgers are non-tendering right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. and left-hander Zach Logue, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times (X link). Both pitchers are still in their pre-arbitration years, so this was more about the Dodgers sending them to free agency without exposing them to waivers, as opposed to cost cutting. Perhaps the club will look to re-sign them on minor league deals.
  • The Giants only made two non-tenders, parting with lefty Ethan Small and righty Kai-Wei Teng. Teng had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. Small, who was in his pre-arbitration years, spent the season in the minors or on the injured list.
  • The Marlins had zero non-tenders. They offered contracts to everyone on the 40-man roster.
  • The Mets dropped a trio of players from the 40-man roster: relievers Grant Hartwig and Alex Young and outfield prospect Alex Ramirez. Young was the only member of that group who’d been eligible for arbitration. The southpaw pitched well in a depth role, but the Mets didn’t want to keep him around at a $1.4MM projection. Hartwig made four appearances this year, while the 21-year-old Ramirez (a former top prospect) had a .210/.291/.299 showing in Double-A.
  • The Nationals announced that they have non-tendered right-hander Kyle Finnegan and Tanner Rainey, which you can read more about here.
  • The Padres dropped four players from the roster: righties Luis Patino and Logan Gillaspie, outfielder Bryce Johnson and infielder Mason McCoy. Patino, who underwent Tommy John surgery last summer, was the only member of the group who’d been eligible for arbitration. The other three cuts are simply about roster maintenance. The Padres could try to bring anyone from that group back on minor league deals.
  • The Phillies will not be tendering a contract to outfielder Austin Hays, which MLBTR covered earlier today.
  • The Pirates are expected to non-tender first baseman/outfielder Connor Joe and outfielder Bryan De La Cruz, per Alex Stumpf of MLB.com (Bluesky link). They are also non-tendering right-hander Hunter Stratton, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (X link). Joe was projected for a salary of $3.2MM next year and De La Cruz $4MM. Stratton had not yet qualified for arbitration. Joe has been around league average at the plate in his career but doing more damage against lefties. De La Cruz has hit .253/.297/.407 in his career for a wRC+ of 90. Startton had a 3.58 ERA this year but his season was ended by knee surgery, giving him an uncertain path forward.
  • The Reds have non-tendered right-hander Ian Gibaut, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer (Bluesky link). The righty was projected for a salary of $800K. He spent the vast majority of 2024 on the injured list due to arm trouble and only made two appearances on the season.
  • The Rockies moved on from starter Cal Quantrill and second baseman Brendan Rodgers, which MLBTR covered here.

another failed trade by a Pirate General Manager
Now he must find a replacement for De la Cruz
Connor Joe’s non tender is a relief for me and am glad he won’t be back
The Hunter Stratton non tender is questionable

Great so they saved just around 8mil or so. That just means they will sign another 30+ year old vet like Tellez or Taylor.

Forget about missed trades. BC has no clue how to sign FA, or the FA know BC has no clue and don’t want to sign in Pittsburgh

He didn’t trade anything special for Cruz. If he hit like he did with Miami it would have be ok. Prices were too rich to get someone better. Although Canha wasn’t too rich. I assumed like many and because Ben said so he wanted to avoid rentals. So this appears to be a black eye on BC. Non tender makes Cruz a rental. Could have spent less and got Canha. Spent more and got Winker.

I liked Hunter. Something there to work with. They can find someone else in his tier so no biggie but interesting enough arm. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him find a home.

Stratton was a surprise to me as he is very serviceable but this injury may be much worse than we thought. He May not be ready until mid year.I hope that they can get him to sign a minor league contract as he has pitched better than projected.
De La Cruz did not look good in Pittsburgh and I think at $4.7 M it a bit too much to assume that he would hit better next year.
I was never a Joe fan but he brought hustle and enthusiasm but the time has come for him to move to another team.

Yeah injury is why. If you need the roster spot or he wouldn’t agree to a budget contract you get rid of him. A+ move. But if he recovers fine I won’t be surprised to see his name somewhere.

I thought Mendoza and Paul might have expired. I been A+ all these wonderful Cherington moves and haven’t seen you. Good to see you. RIP tired old dude RIP

Way to early Pirates 2025 roster.

          DH Cutch Bart
          3b Triolo Hayes
          SS IKF Peguero Triolo
          2b Nick Yorke Peguero Triolo
Hayes will start if back allows. Triolo will be super utility. Hopefully Yorke over takes Gonzales. Can wish Peguero learns to hit.

1b Santana or Goldy. I think the odds are better they go with Rowdy than Pete or even Walker.
          C Bart Endy
LF Reynolds Santana Goldy are just such good value it doesn’t make cents to move Reynolds to 1b but he should learn it to be backup and start there in future years.
CF no idea. MAT is probably the best free agent.
RF Jack Cook. If both learn to hit one can play cf and you can have a weak defensive outfield. RF would be ideal spot for a free agent or trade. 1b definitely free agent or trade.

New hitting coach likely improvements from best odds to worst. Jack is easiest fix. He did it in 2023. At the very least he has a strong platoon in him. Davis has the pedigree. Hit at every level easily until mlb. Peguero has the hard hit and bat speed. Gonzales has some more pop in him. Triolo the least upside. Yorke Cook haven’t seen enough of them. Think they can at least be average guys. They came from other teams though so not nearly as much to fix with them.

Realistic outfielders. Same as my trade deadline wish list. Winker for everyday rf, he is more valuable to Pittsburgh than anywhere else I can think of. Canha for the Joe role outfield 1b. Pillar if he doesn’t retire weak platoon outfielder late innings defense.

If Bart can play 1b there are lots of back uo catchers in free agency. No reason to though.

Conforto tier would be highest $ Nutting will go. So any 20m plus guys multiple years is a fantasy. Believe it when I see it.

Every team will want Roberts so odds of outbidding them are low.

Cherington would have no problem putting Rooker in RF and he would be awesome bat. Oakland says they aren’t trading him. No reason to say that because it doesn’t increase his trade value. That’s a myth.

I think 1b Goldy or Santana is perfect fit. Outfield it’s my budget guys or someone like them. But trade market adds options. Angels willing to trade Ward now? I dunno who’s available really yet.

Starting pitching isn’t a priority this year. May want to add a veteran bargain backend starter but not a necessity. Relievers simply too many to name. Cherington Nuttings moto is take whoever other teams don’t really want.

I’m aware that BC didn’t trade any elite players for DLC, my point being he was brought in because BC was trying to make the playoffs and instead the team went on a 10 game losing streak and DLC was horrible the rest of the season with the Bucs.
Cherington doesn’t seem to have an eye for position player talent

Merryweather and Thompson signed deals to avoid arbitration.

        Along. with Madrigal is Tauchman.

Also non-tendered thus lifting the DFA and making it really official: Wisdom, Alzolay, Wingenter, and Davis.

Heard about Merryweather and Thompson, And approve. Didn’t hear about Tauchman. That’s a surprise as I thought he was Both Hoyer and Counsell’s pet, But he really isn’t needed anymore . That’s maybe enough to get the Cubs 60-70 million in spending room. If Bellinger goes in a trade? But they really don’t need to trade him unless they want to. They have enough money to get what they need.

Why do so many people seem to think the backup catcher is supposed to hit .280 – .300 with 12 to 15 home runs while playing about once a week?

With the same amount of minimal playing time and at bats a month as Stubbs gets, Marchan isn’t going to hit so much better. Why do you think backup catchers traditionally bat in the .180 to .220 range? Sporadic playing time and not getting regular at bats. If Marchan is the backup next year, you and others will be whining and crying about him too when he isn’t on the DL, since he is as fragile as Roman Quinn was

Non tendering BDLC already makes Ben look like a buffoon. I am tired of the small market excuses, they better have a higher quality replacement if they are ditching him already. I understand Joe. Stratton makes no sense. Didn’t injure his arm. He looked incredible at times and had great k/bb numbers. Really running out of patience with BC.

The Pirates at least didn’t give up much for BDLC. They gave up an arm that has been injured most of the past 3 seasons, and a C/1B/3B who hasn’t hit very well at A-Ball. Stratton ruptured his patella tendon on his knee he lands on. There’s a chance he may not even be back until second half of next year, if that. Plus they can still resign him. That’s exactly what happened last off-season (let him go, then resigned him to a minor league deal).

Minor league deal fits. If the Giants aren’t going to sign any real OF upgrades then the young guys need the opportunity to prove themselves or not in my opinion. They don’t need an over 30 marginal player blocking playing time

Posey said at the GM meetings that prospects are going to have to prove they deserve to make the team. These young players have a better chance of proving themselves with regular AB’s at AAA then sitting on the bench in the show like Matos and Luciano did last year.

Best of luck Brett. Thanks for wearing it in NLCS Game 5 to allow Doc to set up a Game 6 win

Non-tendering La Cruz and Joe both seems like a mistake by itself. But its still pretty early in the off season so maybe they have plans for something more.

they traded for La Cruz with a A depth player and an pitcher with an arm injury still years out so its not like they lose much by not keeping him but not even giving him a shot in spring is a bit disappointing.

A+ moves. That’s 7m which can buy a better player. And I hope not but they could still sign Cruz Joe. Not like they will be in high demand.

if this team expects to be better next year bringing these players back won’t help them win.
DLC was a strikeout machine and Joe is more of a platoon player than a starter and they have enough of those players already

Blackpink/Joel Is going to be quite unhappy. Cubs having 6 players who were non tendered listed while Cards only have 1.

Clearly this is biased against the Cards. How dare anyone report actual facts if the news is regarding the Cubs especially if that news isn’t equally impactful to the Cards…..

Patrick Wisdom, Adbert Alzolay, Brennen Davis & Madrigal? I was led to believe this was the backbone of the next dynasty!

Oh man! The Pirates non-tender De La Cruz? I’d love the Marlins to give him a call to bring him back.

Bendix, please make that call! Bring BDLC back to Miami! The Rays may do it, so you should make that call!

“Hoby Milner” sounds like a character from a surfing movie.
