Astros Reportedly “Extensively” Shopping Ryan Pressly

By Nick Deeds | December 8, 2024 at 5:35pm CDT

Astros right-hander Ryan Pressly is being “extensively shopped” on the trade market this winter, according to a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. That’s not the first indication this winter that Pressly could be available, as a report emerged last month indicating that Houston had at least internally discussed dealing the veteran righty, but it’s nonetheless notable that the club has seeming begun shopping him to rival clubs on the trade market.

At the outset of the offseason, GM Dana Brown was candid about the fact that his club’s budget for this winter was looking tight. While the club has emphasized its desire to remain in contention next year, Brown acknowledged the club might have to get “creative” in addressing holes on the roster. That was a potentially ominous sign for a club that saw longtime third baseman Alex Bregman elect free agency last month, leaving them with holes at both infield corners along with room to improve on the outfield grass and in the starting rotation. RosterResource notes that the club is already on the hook for a projected $215MM payroll in 2025, just $20MM below their Opening Day payroll in 2024 and just $29MM below their end-of-season payroll this past year.

With such a tight budget, it’s easy to imagine 2024 being the end of Bregman’s tenure in Houston. That’s not something the Astros have been willing to concede to this point, however, as they’ve reportedly made an offer to Bregman since he reached free agency. The specifics of that offer aren’t entirely clear, but subsequent reporting has suggested there may be a gap between the sides as the Astros hope to retain Bregman on a deal in the range of six years and $156MM while Bregman hopes to land a deal worth at least $200MM. The uncertainty surrounding Bregman has led the Astros to consider potential fallback options, including first baseman Christian Walker and infielder Jorge Polanco, though it’s not hard to imagine Walker himself commanding an AAV that could land outside of the Astros’ comfort zone.

Whether it be in service of a more robust pursuit of Bregman or to increase their flexibility in the event he signs elsewhere, it makes plenty of sense for the Astros to consider dealing Pressly this winter. The 36-year-old hurler is due $14MM in the final year of his contract following a solid but unspectacular 2024 season where he pitched to a 3.49 ERA and 3.10 FIP in a late-inning role after being bumped from the closer role by the club’s deal for Josh Hader last winter. Pressly’s results remained solid, but his peripheral numbers took a step back as his 23.8% strikeout rate was his worst since 2016 while his 7.4% walk rate was his worst in a 162-game season since 2018.

While Pressly is obviously still a quality reliever, he’d be unlikely to receive a $14MM AAV on the open market ahead of his age-36 season this winter. That lack of clear trade value could make a trade difficult for the Astros to pull off, and any trade talks figure to be further complicated by the fact that Pressly has full no-trade protection as a player with ten years of service time and five consecutive years with his current club. That means Pressly would have to approve a trade in order to be moved, and there’s no guarantee that the Dallas native who has previously signed multiple contract extensions with the Astros would be interested in leaving Houston.

Those obstacles are significant, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Pressly remain in an Astros uniform next year because of them. They certainly don’t necessarily mean that a deal is impossible, however. It’s at least feasible that Pressly could have interest in being traded to a club that would be willing to use him in the ninth-inning after he racked up 102 saves in 118 chances (86.4% conversion rate) across his four years in the role with Houston. The Cubs, Red Sox, and Phillies are all among teams that could be in the market for help in the ninth inning this winter, and Nightengale suggests that Philadelphia could have particular interest in Pressly’s services.

Nightengale goes on to speculate that a deal involving Pressly and Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm could make sense for both clubs if the Astros fail to land Bregman, though it’s worth noting that Bohm figures to have more value on the trade market than Pressly so a straight one-for-one swap seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Chicago is known to have interest in dealing Cody Bellinger and Houston has reportedly checked in on Bellinger this winter. That makes a swap involving Bellinger and Pressly at least a theoretical fit between the two sides, though it’s unclear if discussions between the Cubs and Astros about Bellinger even involved other names much less Pressly in particular.

You add to your strengths. You don’t just watch half your team leave, stand pat and not spend a cent.

Not sure who the Padres braintrust is financially(Preller is not in the conversation).if you strip payroll back and expect to compete, good luck.

They’re wrong. He had a 2025 vesting option (not, as b-ref says, a mutual option). And it vested. BR often gets contracts wrong, especially options.

Nobody wants Jeff McNeil. Mets would have to include a valuable prospect to move McNeil for Pressley. Or eat a lot of salary.

No, they wouldnt have to throw a prospect in, even straight up i dont think the mets do that. But it wouldnt work anyway bc the point is to shed the salary. So they shouldnt really expect anyhting of much value back.

The Astros are trying to free up some payroll space by getting rid of Pressly, presumably to resign Bregman. If Bregman leaves, that’d be a cool framework. But if a Pressly trade happens before Bregman decides, that isn’t happening.

If Houston is looking to reduce payroll and if the Mets don’t get Soto, what would Houston want for Alvarez or Tucker and Pressly? Would a package of Clifford, Jett, Baty, Tidwell and Alex Ramirez do it ?

Alvarez is a core piece on a reasonable extension, he’s going nowhere. They should absolutely trade Tucker since it’s clear they won’t sign him to the 10 year extension he’ll get. Pressly + Tucker for a significant prospect package would be good for both clubs. Maybe Crane and Cohen could go really big and put Framber in there as well.

The Astros are in a bad spot.

If they resign Bregman so they compete in 2025, they’ll screw their future. They’re hardly a WS contender in 2025 if they sign Bregman and dump Pressly’s salary.

Valdez, Brown, Arrighetti, Alvarez, and Tucker are coming up for contracts in the next few years, and odds are that what they’ll ask for will make Scott Boras’ Bregman demands seem mild by comparison.

They really need to think about moving some of those players for multiple prospects the next year or so. The longer they wait the longer it’ll take to rebuild the major league team to contention status.

The reality is Bregman is still a very good player, but he is declining. He may not even be serviceable by the end of a 5+ year contract. The truth is you can’t keep both Bregman and Tucker. You let Alex go and you only trade Presley if it makes sense (a high-quality corner infielder).

Astros are in a solid position. Arrighetti and Brown won’t be free agents til ‘29 & ‘30. Altuve could finish his contract better than most aging stars. The Abreu and Montero contracts are off the books after next year. And Montero might actually redeem himself after a solid reemergence in AAA. McCullers is the only contract tough to stomach beyond next year.
I don’t see how Houston is portrayed as being in a bad spot. The rotation is solid and there are some key members coming back from injuries in 2025.

@dickie Houston is in a position to take a step back if they don’t sign Bregman. If Bregman leaves, they are faced with the contract situation of Tucker and Valdez. They each have one season left,do you see those two wanting to head to free agency? Or do you see Houston extending both? If they are hellbent on going to free agency, and Bregman doesn’t sign, I see Houston trading them and getting kids to refresh their rather barren farm system. (Bregman signs, I see Astros riding it out with Valdez and Tucker for one last run with the old gang.)

        thickiedon;

The Astros ARE in a bad spot.

They have to dump Pressly’s salary to fit Bregman in. The man’s peaked. A few years ago they let Correa go and brought up Pena. The won the WS and Pena was the MVP.

” The Abreu and Montero contracts are off the books after next year.”

Great. Lots start here: They’ll be replaced by the Bregman one if they sign him. How do they pay Valdez next year? If/when he leaves, who replaces him? Their payroll is at a breaking point and their stars are going to get outrageous offers.

The Astros are clearly trying to get to one last WS, and are trying to make a desperate move here. For heavens sake, they got whipped in the playoffs by an upstart young Tigers team.

I’ve seen this well over 100 times where older teams try to get one more last good year. They never do.
        –
I like Jim Crane. He’s smart. One of the best owners in pro sports the last 30 years He brought in Luhnow, Elias, and Mejdal to build the franchise up because of their drafting history with the Cardinals. He brought in James Click after Elias and Mejdal had left to run the Orioles and Luhnow was caught up in the cheating scandals. Crane built on the players left him both in the majors and minors. But he didn’t refurbish the minor leagues. THAT is the problem. So Crane brought in Dana Brown because of his successful experience drafting for the Braves. But no one rebuilds a farm system through the draft in 2-3 years.

Forget the stupid depth charts. Most teams use 20-22 position players in a season and in the high 30’s-low 40’s of pitchers. The Astros don’t have enough quality players to absorb injuries and players having bad seasons. They’re cooked. They need to get at least 8-10 quality prospects that they can work with even if it means trading some of their stars.

Murray’s name has only been mentioned with others. No articles based on his articles. Only after someone else also says it even if they credit him for having it first.

Can you think of a single time Nightengale has been correct with a rumor? Not when he says so and so is getting paid such and such AFTER it’s already been announced that they were signed. Right about a rumor. It never happens.

    Astros get:
    N. Castellanos RF (2/40)
    K. Clemens 1B/3B
    J. Rojas CF
Carlos de la Cruz OF (#24)
    Jean Cabrera RHP (#9)
    Christian McGowan (#22)
    Phillies get:
    K. Tucker RF (1/18)
    R. Pressly RP (1/15)
    J. Meyers CF (2/10)

Astros would free up approx $17.5mil in salary for 2025 so they can re-up with icon 3B Alex Bregman. They also get a major boost to the worst ranked farm system in baseball with some high upside prospects, plus a couple of young inexpensive players in Rojas & Clemens – gotta love the nostalgia Clemens to the Stros – clear upgrade at 1B over Singleton. Phillies get 3 guys to fill positions of needs for one more run at a WS championship.

Phillies aren’t trading Bohm for Pressley. I live in PA & the reports here are Dombrowski wants a controlable arm if he moves Bohm. Pressley doesn’t fit that description with one year left on his contract. They asked for Gilbert or Kirby from Seattle when the Mariners called. Phillies can do better than Ryan Pressley in a Bohm trade
