Blue Jays, Diamondbacks Have Expressed Interest In Ryan Helsley

By Nick Deeds | December 21, 2024 at 9:49pm CDT

As the Cardinals eye a reset focused on younger players in 2025, Mark Feinsand, John Denton, and Bryan Hoch of MLB.com report that the club has received interest from the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks regarding closer Ryan Helsley. A subsequent report from John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 confirms the interest in Helsley on the part of the D-Backs, though Gambadoro adds that the Cardinals do not appear to be interested in dealing their closer.

That apparent disinclination to deal Helsley meshes with a report from earlier this month that characterized St. Louis as unlikely to part ways with Helsley this winter, with president of baseball operations John Mozeliak suggesting at the time that they plan on Helsley remaining with the team for 2025. Given the perennial desire for high-end relief talent at the trade deadline each summer, it stands to reason that if Helsley pitches anything like he did in 2024 (2.04 ERA, 49 saves, 29.7% strikeout rate) in the first half of 2025 the Cardinals would still be able to land quite the haul for his services in the event they aren’t in position to push for a return to the playoffs.

Given that reality, it’s perhaps not a shock that the Cardinals have seemingly set an incredibly high bar for even considering moving on from the two-time All-Star. The 30-year-old has been among the league’s most dominant relievers in recent years, with a 1.83 ERA and 82 saves to go with a 34.6% strikeout rate in 167 2/3 innings of work since the start of the 2022 campaign. That sort of dominant relief profile can net an impressive return even with just one year of team control remaining, as the Brewers demonstrated when they acquired Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin from the Yankees in exchange for star closer Devin Williams.

Considering a report earlier this week suggested that the Snakes had interest in Williams before he was ultimately traded to the Yankees, it’s perhaps no surprise that Arizona has made contact with the Cardinals regarding Helsley. Club brass has made plain their goal of adding high-leverage relief help this winter following the loss of Paul Sewald to free agency. The club’s current back-end trio of Justin Martinez, A.J. Puk, and Kevin Ginkel is a solid one, but it’s easy to see why the Diamondbacks would have interest in bumping a young arm like Martinez out of the closer role and bringing in someone more established.

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, appear to be in the market for upgrades to virtually every area of their roster after a disappointing 2024 season that saw them finish dead last in the AL East. As star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. enters his final year of team control before free agency, Toronto appears to be focused on adding a bat to the lineup who can help offer him protection and bulking up a starting rotation that lost Yusei Kikuchi to a midseason trade and stands to lose Chris Bassitt to free agency next winter. In addition to those two issues, however, it can’t be ignored that the Jays non-tendered longtime closer Jordan Romano last month and currently figure to rely on Chad Green and the recently re-signed Yimi Garcia in the late innings. Adding a more proven closer to that mix would surely help turn around a Blue Jays club that saw its relievers struggle to the second-worst ERA and the worst FIP in baseball last year.

Other options beyond Helsley exist for strengthening either club’s bullpen corps, of course. It’s unclear whether either club would spend what it takes to land a top-of-the-market closing option like Tanner Scott or Jeff Hoffman, but veteran closers like Kenley Jansen, Kirby Yates, and David Robertson are all available in free agency this winter and could be had on a shorter commitment. Sewald, José Leclerc, and Chris Martin are among the other relievers available who could impact a club’s late-inning mix and could be more affordable than other options available.

If I get one more notification that the Blue Jays are interested in a player while they sign NOBODY I’m going to go on a poutine strike. I don’t want it to get that serious but this is where we are.

99.9 percent of fans don’t have a clue and just repeat the lies they were told through opinion, NOT reality. In fact, For those athletes, the Canada-US Treaty “MSMCA’ treaty signed applies a 183-day test window for the players.: The non-resident athlete pays Canadian tax on their employment income only if their presence in Canada exceeds 183 days in that year. That is six months, but the US athletes in New York, Chicago, LA pay tax based on which state they play their games in during the season. When fans scream oh Canadian taxes are why players don’t sign, then WHY do players sign with US teams and pay 100 percent more taxes than in Canada. Of course, the casual ignorant fans aren’t aware of that fact. lol

The Cardinals need to keep Helsley. Possibly convert him to a starter…. Should he not pan out as a starter …. Then trade him as a reliever/Closer.

Equal to or less than a lot of jurisdictions in the US (including California, where a lot of athletes are clamouring to play).

Americans think Canadians pay a lot more in tax because we get free healthcare. Well… who do Americans think pay for all the nukes?

The Canadian government spends less on healthcare than the US government. In the USA, the government covers the old, disabled and poor while private companies soak up money for the young and healthy and leech as much as they can from the government for the rest as useless middlemen. Thus Americans pay more tax dollars for a system that makes them also pay out of pocket and covers way fewer people and it all sums up to dramatically shorter life expectancy and medical bankruptcies and depressed wages from being unable to switch jobs safely.

Sure, the nukes cost money too — but we’re also burning tax money on the terrible health care.

Can anybody tell me when the two twits Atkins and Shapiro are going to start making some moves, are they on vacation or what. They have so many holes to fill on this team it’s not funny . The talent they have put together on this team is garbage , other than Vlad , Bo , Springer , and Varsho are all minor leagers with no talent , if they go into the season with this group of players you can guarantee that Vlad and Bo are not sticking around with this franchise . Fans are u rready for 50 win seasons if that happens , because players are not coming here to play with a team with no talent . Why are u people still going to games to support this organization , when they offer you no hope of winning . And Rogers why are you sitting back and watch those too twits make your organization one of the worst ones in the league these guys have destroyed this organization from the mlb level all the way down to the lowest level of the minor leagues . 10 years of that crap .

Oh, they’ll pay – and I guarantee you that they’ll sign at least 2 name FA’s this offseason.

The issue is that FA players want to see which other teams are interested, what their current status is as far as being a contending team, the manager, coaching staff, culture, etc. Standard stuff.

I don’t think the Jays come off are a prime destination point.
They’ll probably have to overpay in years as well as offer the
      players opt-outs as well.

One of the few things Shapiro and Atkins have done right is gain a reputation for being good to their players and also assembling a clubhouse of good guys.

It’s just that you don’t get a discount for being a last place team with a bad farm system and high payroll in the toughest division with no apparent path to long term success. Especially if you’re not the hometown for many players, since Toronto isn’t as big a talent pipeline as warmer places.

THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS , because they are run by the worst Management team in Baseball ,Shapiro and his good buddy puppet Atkins and the Worst Owners in Major League Baseball , Rogers for letting these two guys destroy this organization for 10 years on the major league level and the hole minor league system from top to bottom. Even if they trade Vlad and Bo this team will be terrible for years to come because the crap these guys have compiled in the the minors , and the players these guys will accept in return .

    This is a new approach.

instead of saying they are interested in a FA and lose out, now it’s they are interested in a player not likely to be traded.

how many more ways can this Jays teams media plants put out stories expressing interest in a player when the club clearly has no inclination of getting said player (or any upgrade). At least the Sox got Crochet and the O’s are not rumoured to be on anyone.

It seems that last years signings were done with the concept of signing the easiest players to “flip” at the trade deadline, with an idea of gaining multiple younger controllable players. Rather than for building a team. Which is why there were too many infielders last year. If this is their “process”…forget about competing for years. May also explain why players don’t want to sign…because they would be moving on half way through the year.

Draft picks are a dime a dozen , there is no guarantee that draft picks work out , and the problem with this management is they over value their draft picks that will never be major leaguers . Look at Anthopoulos how many minor leagers he traded away and none of them ever became stars.

Personally would rather have these separate as Helsley would get top prospects packaging them counteracts that with Nolan’s salary being covered with little or no prospect capital. Arenado is a buy low and helsley is sell high and Mo and Bloom should ensure they get rid of as much salary without a return for arenado and helsley should get us 2-4 prospects one of which needs to be a top prospect.

The DeWitts —- instead of completely flushing the Cardinals Franchise down the Toilet —- should sell the Team to an individual or group who what’s to keep the Historic Cardinals in
