Braves Acquire Davis Daniel

By Darragh McDonald | December 20, 2024 at 12:30pm CDT

The Braves have acquired right-hander Davis Daniel from the Angels, per announcements from both clubs. The Halos designated Daniel for assignment earlier this week. Left-hander Mitch Farris heads the other way.

Daniel, 28 in June, has a small amount of major league experience thus far. Between last year and this year, he has tossed 42 2/3 innings for the Angels, allowing 5.06 earned runs per nine. His 8.1% walk rate is right around average but his 19.9% strikeout rate and 39.1% ground ball rate are both a few ticks worse than par.

Atlanta is probably more interested in the Triple-A season that Daniel just had. He made 21 starts and one relief appearance at the Sale Lake Bees, logging 118 innings. His 5.42 ERA in that time is obviously not impressive, but the Bees play in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Daniel struck out 23.3% of batters faced and only gave out walks at a 6.5% clip. His 4.41 FIP was almost exactly a run better than his ERA.

Daniel still has an option remaining, so he can give Atlanta a bit of extra rotation depth without taking up an active roster spot. Atlanta projects to have a rotation fronted by Chris Sale, Reynaldo López and Spencer Schwellenbach. They will eventually get Spencer Strider back into that mix at some point, once he’s recovered from his April internal brace surgery. Until then, options for the back end include Grant Holmes, Ian Anderson, AJ Smith-Shawver, Hurston Waldrep, Bryce Elder and others. Daniel will jump into that group, who will presumably battle each other for positions on the depth chart.

Farris, 24 in February, was selected by Atlanta in the 14th round of the 2023 draft. Since then, he has thrown 124 2/3 innings over 21 starts and nine relief appearances in the minors. In that time, he has a 2.96 ERA, 30% strikeout rate and 9.7% walk rate. He spent most of 2024 at High-A and will backfill some of the pitching depth that the Angels just lost by cutting Daniel from the roster. Farris isn’t Rule 5 eligible until December of 2026, so he won’t need a roster spot for quite a while.

Really hope it works out well for Davis.

He’s from the South and now he’ll get to pitch close to sea level rather than in salt Lake.

Rotation Depth is fine, but at some point we will need a legit Pitcher for either the bullpen or Rotation it’s a long season. Choose Shortstop or Outfielder we need one of them and back fill the other spot with first available……

A starting pitcher for a late round draft pick? I like the prospect but AA can draft half a dozen of these guys any year.

Braves will probably release him in a week. They released Canning and this guy is much worse than Canning.

Neither of these guys is likely to ever break through. Farris is probably just a younger version of Daniel.

Canning had no options and was set to cost about $6 million.

Davis can be stashed in AAA.

@Google Me: The situations aren’t comparable. Soler was a salary dump deal. This trade involved a 14th round draft choice for starting pitcher depth that AA seems to believe has value (probably due to solid underlying stats.)

Having an option is a good thing. Few of the braves 5th spot candidates/swingmen have options. It gives flexibility during the season. These types of roster moves are important in the grand scheme of things.

Whenever I see a move like this, I assume the team trading for the player sees the peripheral stats to consider this a diamond in the rough whom they can mold into surplus value and minimal cost and either keep in house for relatively cheap long term or flip for a haul later on…

Why … why not include him in the Solar? Like certainly the angels kinda knew they weren’t gonna keep him…

It’s funny, if the Braves and angels could have (and I know mlb rules would have prevented it) but if they could have waited, the Braves could have traded solar and TD, angels would have had TD in a lower risk deal, albeit higher AAV for the 1 year, and they could have swapped for this guy in the deal plus some cash and everyone would have been happy, Braves could have kept their prospects. Idk.. just funny how it all unfolds

Care to elaborate? How is what I am saying inaccurate or stupid? Arte loves to spend on marketing moves, but he underspends for non-marketing things like player development, scouting, coaching, sports medicine, the farm system, etc. And the team has a terrible track record at identifying and developing talent.

So, the trades with the Braves seem “fine” to you? I guess I’m expecting the team with vastly superior scouting and player development to come out better in the long run. Maybe you should wait to see how things pan out before throwing around insults?

Dramatic? Maybe you should look at the big market Angels being sub .500 every season for the last decade and the lack of a single post-season win since 2009.

I actually didn’t call the Angels stupid, yourdreamgm did.

But I do agree with him. The Angels have made so many stupid draft picks and trades it’s hard to keep track of them all. The organization as a whole lacks intelligence. They aren’t competitive in any facet, including player development. Years of neglecting the scouting and minors have turned the organization into a non-competitive mess.

Again, this big market team with a supportive fan base hasn’t had a winning season since 2015. They haven’t wont a playoff game since 2009. The only winner in all of this is Arte’s wallet, If you find my take on things to be “dramatic!” well that’s too bad.

This big market team hasn’t had a winning season in nearly a decade. They haven’t won a single playoff game since 2009. The farm system is consistently rated among the worst in baseball. If these basic facts strike you as “dramatic!”, then maybe the team isn’t really doing so great, eh?

You seem like the kind of person who thinks whoever gets in the last word wins. So, go for it and happy holidays.
