Diamondbacks Not Close To Any Pitching Trades

By Mark Polishuk | December 29, 2024 at 4:42pm CDT

The Diamondbacks’ surprise signing of Corbin Burnes added a new frontline arm to a rotation that was already operating at a surplus on paper.  Burnes joins Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jordan Montgomery, Brandon Pfaadt, and Ryne Nelson, giving the Snakes an enviably deep group of starting pitchers.  The D’backs had already been drawing trade interest in this group even before Burnes was added, but Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Burnes signing wasn’t made with any other pitching swaps immediately on the horizon.

According to Piecoro, no “other deals [are] lined up or even close” involving Arizona’s pitchers, as the Diamondbacks will continue to take a measured view of the market.  A source tells Piecoro that the D’Backs will likely “spend the coming days fielding calls from teams still in the hunt for starters, including those that were in on Burnes.”  The D’Backs aren’t in any particular rush to complete a trade any time soon, as having more than a full rotation in place before New Year’s Eve gives the club plenty of time to figure out the best possible offer.

It also isn’t entirely out of the question that the Diamondbacks stand pat on their starters, especially if an injury emerges to a starter during their offseason training, or during Spring Training.  Kelly, Rodriguez, and Montgomery all missed significant time with injuries last season, so there is obvious value in having extra pitchers on hand should any more health issues create openings in the rotation.  Operating with a six-man rotation is also a possibility, in order to keep everyone healthy and fresh for what the D’Backs hope can be an extended run through the playoffs.

Given how the Burnes deal reportedly came together just within the last week when Burnes himself approached the D’Backs, it isn’t surprising that the signing wasn’t part of an immediate plan to re-model the pitching staff.  Such two-step transactions are usually hard to pull off, though the Diamondbacks were part of such a set of moves from the Guardians just last week — Arizona acquired Josh Naylor from the Guards, and Cleveland then signed Carlos Santana that same day to immediately fill Naylor’s spot as the everyday first baseman.

The fact that Burnes signed with a team that was seemingly already set for starting pitching gives GM Mike Hazen even more leverage in shopping his hurlers.  Such known Burnes suitors like the Orioles, Blue Jays, or Giants are still in need of pitching, to say nothing of the many other starter-needy clubs on the market that weren’t willing or able to meet Burnes’ asking price.

Nothing seems to have changed in terms of which starters are most prominently on Arizona’s trade block.  Gallen and Kelly are both free agents next winter but don’t seem likely to be dealt, as a team source told Piecoro that the team’s focus in on “trying to put the best team on the field in 2025.”  Nelson is controlled through the 2027 season and Pfaadt through the 2029 season, so the Diamondbacks would probably only move either if a longer-term asset (likely a position player) could be obtained in return.  The D’Backs might not mind moving the $66MM remaining on Rodriguez’s contract, but the club would certainly have to sell low and eat some of that money in the wake of E-Rod’s injury-plagued down year.

That leaves Montgomery as still the chief candidate to be dealt before Opening Day.  Montgomery’s trade value is also at a low ebb after his rough first year in Arizona, and his $22.5MM salary for the 2025 season.  Owner Ken Kendrick’s public criticism of Montgomery following the season only increased the probability that the left-hander would be pitching elsewhere next year, yet again, the Burnes signing gives the D’Backs some flexibility in this regard.  The Diamondbacks technically don’t have to trade Montgomery if an acceptable offer for another starter comes their way, and offers for Montgomery might improve if other teams become increasingly desperate to add pitching.

I’ll buy the first three as quality starters, the rest of the rotation is suspect.

Both E-Rod & Monty had awful ’24 seasons, but just a year prior they were a 13-win (3.30 ERA/131 ERA+) & 10-win (3.20 ERA/136 ERA+) SP with Monty also posting impressive postseason numbers, while being on 2 different teams in reg season. If even one of them has anywhere close to a similar season and Brandon is more “phat” than “Pfaadt” — they could have one of the deepest rotations in MLB.

Monte after what was publicly said is getting dealt absent and equally public apology. The offers though probably only involve AZ paying most of 25 so their likely trying to rehabilitate his value to others if they can. I’m expecting a deal in spring training after Monte hopefully looks like he did pre-2024.

Suspect is a strong word. E-rod had a down year, mostly because of injuries, but most teams would kill to have him as a fourth starter option. Same with Montgomery. He had a down year, but a as a fifth starter, I’d take him in an heartbeat. And Pfaadt is young and up and coming. His numbers don’t jump off the page, but he was downright dominant in stretches last season. Same with Nelson.

I didn’t mean to offend you with my differing opinion, I’m just saying that if these two guys progress back to their typical stats, then this would be a very deep rotation. Obviously they’re not aces, but a team could do a lot worse these E-rod and Montgomery as a 4th and 5th starter. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Monty bounce back, especially considering it’s another chance for him to land a big contract.

They have to trade Montgomery now that the owner has trashed him to the press. Ham fisted way to get a player to move on that might work with a low level employee but not to a player with expert advice from an agent. The result is Arizona is likely to get less in return (and pay more of the salary) as they will be desperate to unload the contract. Anyone saying they could just keep him is fooling themselves.

It’s really not hard to walk back those statements with a face-to-face with the player and a simple public re-framing. And both player and owner can move on.

E-Rod is immovable right now. Too much money owed and didn’t look good under the hood either. He also hasn’t been that great of a pitcher aside from 2023 for a little while now. He’s a fine backend guy but not for $20MM per for the next 3.

They both are low 4 era pitchers or avg about 108 era+ if you prefer that number. So for their careers they are slightly above avg pitchers being paid to be better than that.

Can they have a great season…maybe but you wouldn’t bet on it after how bad they were a year ago.

And by definition 4 and 5 guys are generally worse than league average. If you get 108 ERA+ out of your worst two guys, you have a really good rotation.

Plenty of red flags. K/W down.

The most problematic for me moving forward is that his fastball/cutter were completely ineffective. Hitters barreled both of those pitches. His sinker wasn’t much better. He’s going to have to throw significantly more offspeed pitches to be effective moving forward.

You’re basically buying ERod to turn into a crafty lefty at $20MM per for the next 3 years.

I’m not so sure they “technically don’t HAVE” to trade JM. I bet they do. They’re in completely uncharted payroll waters and I think they took the gamble that they could find someone to take at least most of the $22m, with a prospect maybe. 50/50 I’d wager. Either way, resigning Gallen now seems impossible.

Not a bad move as a backup plan in case they can’t resign Gallen. Burnes and Gallen have had similar levels of success, but Burnes has been more durable.

Other than Burnes, they seem like a rotation of # 2/3’s. (Which is good for AZ, I’m not making a slight) But from the Orioles perspective, paying w/ prospects for any of those guys, I don’t love. Not the need for one, just the guys AZ has to offer I’m saying. Cease, Lopez, or Castillo would be much better.

Lopez, sure. Cease is a rental again which isn’t ideal but depending on the acquisition cost.

Pfaadt is not a well below average pitcher. Anyone who has watched him knows he has elite stuff and can be dominant at times. He’s still young and with his arsenal he has tons of upside. He even has good playoff outings under his belt already. I’m hoping the Dbacks stay patient with him and Nelson. No rush to move any pitcher.

The only way you’re getting rid of Montgomery is by taking on a bad contract from another team and that window is closing with other teams squaring up their squads.

The DBacks now have potentially 6 better SPs than Montgomery (Burnes, Gallen, Kelly, Rodriguez, Pfaadt, and Nelson) plus any MiLB developments; I don’t think things are going to turn out quite the way you’re hoping lol

DBacks should wait and see who’s pulling their weight on the pitching staff or who isn’t then decide to move someone to a team with injury concerns during Spring Training. Would like to see Drey Jameson contribute to the back end of the bullpen.

Tigers and Dbacks match up in a Monty for Tork trade. Both had good years the previous year buy not last year. I’m sure they could swing a package.

Montgomery missed spring training last year and never seemed to get on track. It also took Snell awhile.

If the Angels were smart they’d take on that salary and a prospect in exchange for a warm body and gamble on the bounce back.

Montgomery, cash and a prospect for Taylor Ward would be a good fit for both the Dbacks and Angels. Monty will be a good bounce-back candidate with a spring training this season and another FA looming.

Maybe but the losing both joc and walker hurts a lot. Even with Naylor in return. Burnes does make them better. So overall I’d say dbacks have slightly improved. Padres have done nothing so we shall see by the start if they move the needle at all.

I would be shocked if Montgomery came into spring training still a member of the Diamondbacks
It doesn’t make sense to trade the others, especially with Gallen & Kelly due to be FA’s after the season, unless an offer that’s too good to pass up on happens, after all everything can change with just 1 phone calls.
Heck Burnes called the Diamondbacks and look what happened there.

Many on these threads have speculated about Montgomery’s bounce back potential. If the Dbacks don’t connect with a team this off-season who believes in Montgomery’s bounce back potential, then I think the Dbacks should keep him until the trade deadline to let him prove himself, then trade him.

Snakes and White Sox flip Jordan Montgomery and his $22.5MM salary for Luis Robert Jr. and his $15MM salary.

To make up the difference in value, the White Sox get Alek Thomas (high-upside short-term replacement for Robert), Druw Jones (high-upside long-term replacement for Robert), and the #73 overall Competitive Balance B pick.

Snakes also get their choice of either Davis Martin or Jonathan Cannon to replace Montgomery’s innings with league-average production at a league-minimum salary, and each guy gives the Diamondbacks 2 more seasons of team control than Alek Thomas currently gives them.

That puck went to Cleveland for Naylor… and why would AZ pay a premium for a guy who odds more than likely to be an overpaid IL spot? I’d love Robert in AZ, but Jones would be a lot. Maybe Troy and Dix instead?

Braves! Braves! Braves! Now is the time to pull your heads out of your you know whats and do something and to add to the rotation! This is the perfect opportunity! One of Kelly, Gallen, Pfaadt, Nelson, or E-Rod would help bolster our rotation tremendously! It’s been all crickets the entire off-season and the braves have a very loyal fan base dying for you guys to do something, anything for that matter! The pitching market has so many names available why haven’t we made something happen yet? Pirates have Keller and Jones, Mariners have Castillo, Cardinals have gray and Fedde, Twins have Lopez, A’s have Sears and the Astros have Valdez! The free agent market still has plenty of talent as well including but not limited to Pivetta, Flaherty, turnbull, Trevor Williams, Lorenzen, Junis, Heaney, and maybe even a shot at at Sasaki! So many pitchers available via trade or free agency that it’s quite ridiculous the Braves haven’t even had a slither of news on who they’re after if anyone at all!and I’m not saying that I want all of these guys, and some of them could definitely regress and probably wouldn’t be worth it, but as a Braves fan I know I’m not alone in just simply wanting to hear something pertaining to the Braves adding to our roster to make sure we at least attempt to not be surpassed by the rest of the NL East!

My best guess is that GMs, including Hazen, see Monty as a strong bounce back candidate in ’25. He has to be extremely motivated coming off a very poor season, largely due to no ST, and heading into his walk year. If I’m Hazen and need to lower payroll, I hold onto Monty into ST and trade him once SP injuries start popping up across MLB. Some team will reach out to the Dbacks in desperate need of a SP.

Roger Beshens Football Slider tracked every Slider thrown by the Dbacks in 2024. Beshens taught Strom how he Shapes his Football Slider so it was very easy to look at the metrics and have the pitcher adjust the vertical and horizontal. Problem was the Dback pitchers knew that newly advised info was coming from Roger Beshens and many didn’t want to join the Roger Beshens Football Slider club. Disinterested pitchers would be an understatement. Some weak minded ones rather fail miserably than admit they needed advice Beshens through Strom.

Dbacks have seven pitchers for 6 rotation spots, but you can never have too much pitching. So the Dbacks aren’t planning to trade any of the seven.

When teams get desperate for pitching they will contact the Dbacks. But unless the Dbacks are blown away by an offer, none of them will be traded.

Not only that, the Dbacks only want certain positions, so unless teams offer proven Closers or RH power bats, the Dbacks aren’t interested. The Dbacks have leverage and aren’t going to waste it.

Ken K didn’t come out and say he was the reason for Monty being on the team?

Cmon buddy. Burnes reached out to AZ. The only reason he’s on the team right now is bc Kendrick ok’d it. Kendrick would be so happy to get Monty off. You know what his comments were. Cmon Scotty he’d love to save $15MM with Burnes on the squad now!

I do believe Kendrick stays out of the day to day roster construction/drafting/developments drafting but when it comes to opening the wallet for Monty and Burnes——-Well we know from him and other sources that was ultimately his call. So
