Rangers Re-Sign Nathan Eovaldi

By Nick Deeds | December 12, 2024 at 6:32pm CDT

Nathan Eovaldi is headed back to Texas. The Rangers finalized the right-hander’s three-year free agent deal on Thursday evening. It’s reportedly a $75MM guarantee for the ACES client.

The deal includes a $12MM signing bonus that’ll be paid in $6MM in installments after the 2026 and ’27 seasons. Eovaldi’s salaries for the next three years will be $18MM, $25MM and $20MM, respectively. The backloaded contract affords Texas some short-term payroll flexibility. Eovaldi also gets a full no-trade clause.

It’s a somewhat shocking contract for the right-hander in a hot pitching market that has exceeded expectations across the board. Eovaldi is the latest pitcher to beat early offseason projections, and his guarantee significant outpaces the two-year, $44MM pact that MLBTR predicted for the righty as part of our annual Top 50 MLB Free Agents list. The fact that the Rangers went to a third year in order to land Eovaldi is particularly noteworthy, as it’s just the third time since 2010 that a pitcher entering his age-35 season or later has landed a guarantee longer than two years according to MLBTR’s Contract Tracker. Rich Hill’s three-year pact with the Dodgers is nearly a decade old at this point, and good a pitcher as Eovaldi is, he’s not a Hall of Fame-caliber talent like Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom before him.

On the other hand, it’s worth pointing out that deGrom’s aforementioned contract was signed just two winters ago by the same Rangers club that has now brought Eovaldi back into the fold. That could suggest that Chris Young’s front office is simply more willing to roll the dice on aging pitchers they believe in compared to other organizations. If that’s the case, it’s certainly understandable that they’d choose Eovaldi to place that bet on. In his first two years with the club, the veteran right-hander provided much-needed stability to the club’s rotation with a 3.72 ERA (110 ERA+) and 3.86 FIP in 54 starts.

While those numbers may not immediately jump of the page, Eovaldi’s underlying metrics suggest he’s still among the better front-of-the-rotation options available this winter even as he starts to age. His 95.6mph average fastball velocity is still strong, and he’s still limiting walks (7.0% with the Rangers) and generating grounders (49.5% groundball rate) at a high clip. Those strong peripherals come in addition to his phenomenal resume in key moments. Eovaldi offered the Rangers a dominant six-start performance in the postseason as he helped lead the Rangers to the first World Series championship in franchise history back in 2023, when he pitched to a 2.95 ERA and struck out 26.8% of opponents in 36 2/3 innings of work to add to an impressive postseason resume from his years with the Red Sox.

It’s that stability the Rangers hope Eovaldi will continue to bring to the front of their rotation going forward. The club has a number of interesting options, ranging from the elite but oft-injured deGrom to exciting but unproven youngsters like Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter. With Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney both ticketed for free agency this winter, however, the Rangers were left with zero pitchers who made even 20 starts for the club in 2024. That made adding a stable source of innings a priority for the club, and they’ve now done so by bringing Eovaldi back into the fold where he’ll head a rotation that also figures to feature some combination of deGrom, Rocker, Leiter, Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford, and Dane Dunning. It’s possible they’ll continue to add to that rotation mix, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported in the aftermath of Eovaldi’s decision that the Rangers hope to add another starter in addition to bullpen help this winter.

Those pursuits could come amid a bit of a budget crunch for the club. Reporting early this offseason suggested that the club could look to duck under the luxury tax threshold this winter. With Eovaldi back in the fold, RosterResource projects the club for a payroll just north of $219MM for tax purposes in 2025. That leaves the club with around $21MM in breathing room before they go over the first threshold, which is set at $241MM. Adding multiple relievers and another starter in free agency could be a tall order with that limited budget room unless the club is willing to deal salary elsewhere, though the trade market could also represent a way to add pitching talent at a lower financial cost.

Turning to the pitching market as a whole, the majority of top free agent starters are off the market at this point. Right-handers Corbin Burnes and Jack Flaherty are still available in terms of potential front-of-the-rotation arms, while mid-rotation pieces Sean Manaea and Nick Pivetta also remain available. Of that quartet, only Flaherty isn’t encumbered by a Qualifying Offer that would force acquiring clubs to forfeit draft capital and international bonus pool money in order to sign him. For clubs looking to avoid signing another club’s qualified free agent such as the Orioles, whiffing on Flaherty (and, in the case of Baltimore specifically, Burnes) would leave them forced to resort to back-end veterans such as Heaney and Jose Quintana or reclamation projects such as Walker Buehler in order to add starting pitching talent.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the Rangers were re-signing Eovaldi. Jeff Passan of ESPN was first with the three-year, $75MM terms. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported that it was a backloaded arrangement with an $18MM salary in year one. Jon Heyman of the New York Post had the specific salary breakdown and the no-trade clause.

Of course he’s worth it. He takes the ball, is a great teammate and performs on the big stage. Given the other contracts, it’s that third year at $25m per. After Fried, this seems reasonable.

He’s thrown 314 innings in the last two seasons, which is not reflective of being “constantly hurt.”

he spent time in the IL in both of those years especially in 2023. He missed significant time due to injury in every year but one with Sox and even before that. Players don’t get less hurt the older they get. Also 314 innings isn’t all that impressive.

He wasn’t good in 2021. He got rocked in the ACLS by the Astros. it was his worst post season performance. Regardless I’m more concerned about how he will pitch over the next five years and I doubt he will be anything more than a number 3 at best.

Someone who is “constantly hurt” as you claim by definition would not accrue 314 innings in those two seasons. Referring to the two most recent seasons also doesn’t constitute “cherry-picking” But whatever, we get it you don’t like Eovaldi.

his ERA was over 4.50. that entire post season in 2021.. I’m pointing why that’s the case. That’s not good. I’m saying in totality in 2021 he as bad. Yes was good against the Yankees and ok against the ray but those starts against the astros were bad .that’s actually not cherry picking.

314 innings is mediocre. That’s 160 inning average. in 2022 he started 25 games. last year he still missed time but pitched in if you look at his entire career he’s been very injury prone. ignoring the rest of his career to focus on two mediocre season to try to prove your point is cherry picking.

Overall he’s been good to great in the post season. I agree that sox fans whine too much about sale leaving. I also feel the same way about Eovaldi. while he might be solid I am skeptical that a 35 year old who has been on the IL to varying degrees almost his entire career will continue to remain solid from ages 35-38. Sox fans tend to overrate his post season performances and ignore his unreliability during the regular season.

my argument is that he is hurt constantly throughout his career and his career numbers represent that he’s a number 3 starter at best. as you said sometimes he’s been better that that in spurts but he’s also been worse. it’s realistic not faulty.

I’m saying he had periods where he was worse I never said you did. My evaluation of Eovaldi has nothing to do with Fever or his weird obsession with him and I’m not being biased. Many sox fans act as though he’s been great over his entire career or even throughout his career with the red sox when in fact he was very good for about half time and not worth the amount of whining and complaining sox fans do about his departure and now not resigning him.

As far as Fried goes I don’t blame the sox for not going to 8 years at 218. that felt like a desperation move for the yankees

If they’re was a league wife own draft and each team picked 1 starter each round would they’re really be 89 SP picked ahead of Evoldi? I get what you mean in terms of his stuff is more mid-rotstion but in the real world, his value is much better.

Yeah- seemed like initially everybody agreed it’d be 1 year/$15M just a question of who. It might still be if he’s just looking to re-establish himself. But if he’s just looking to cash in on the current market trends, he could still fetch like 2 years/$40M to 3 years/$75M himself.

I think he signs for like 1 year/$15M with a 1 year/$20M player option against a 4 year/$110M club option or something like that, with additional opt outs the club can void by triggering additional money and years.

So it could wind up being like 7 years/$210M or something from a base of 1 year/$15M.

His situation is difficult to gauge in this market. All it takes is one over-the-top offer, and several teams might be willing to make it. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I agree- which is why I guesstimated such a complex eventual contract.

Now, of course, this is all just continuing a trend that is a few years old at this point, so he might actually be better off doing a straight one year deal with no option or buy outs or whatever and then re-entering the market next year after a healthy and lucky season and then wind up with like 7 years/$245M, equating to 8 years/$260M or something crazy like that.

It’s weird. We thought he’d be fishing for a make-good deal when the season ended. Now, he might be in the driver’s seat fielding offers. It’s incredible how recording the last out of the World Series can change things. He should send Alex Verdugo a Christmas card with a coupon for a free tattoo.

I wonder what his market currently looks like. I feel like out of all these guys getting ‘overpaid’ he’ll be one of the few to be forced to take a far more modest deal that looks like something all these other borderline guys would’ve signed 5-10 years ago- like 3 year/$39M or 4 years/$50M or something…

Talk about a player with an odd market. At 28, he should be in his prime. Instead, his production and reputation have both taken a hit. I was high on him when he came up with the Dodgers, figuring he’d hit 40 doubles a year, compete for a batting title or two, and be solid defensively. Maybe he can re-establish himself on a short-term deal. But what kind of team? Contenders will probably pass while rebuilding teams might view him as a negative influence on younger players. There’s talent there, but he has a lot to prove.

This is a problem with fans and prospects. Sometimes, we fans become infatuated with players before we see them play. Miguel Vargas is another Dodger prospect I have (apparently) missed the boat on.

Yeah. When he was traded to the Yankees, I was hoping for the guy he was through that series against the Red Sox and that the Yankees would re-sign him to like 5 years/$90M to 6 years/$120M and then after that MVP calibre series, his numbers cratered for the rest of the year and he’s truly hurt his prospects for free agency…

He could legitimately be the new Nick Swisher who will be forced to take a ‘record breaking deal’ from a low budget club.

Like the A’s sign him to 7 years/$105M or something, haha.

But at this rate I could see him signing with the Pirates for like 2 years/$26M…

I thought he would flourish in Boston, a somewhat fiery guy that fans in the northeast love when he’s on their side but boo when he’s an opponent. I’m surprised it didn’t work out. He’s been fortunate to play for three historic franchises.

It’s funny. I’m in my 60s, and I had never bought a player shirt until I purchased a Verdugo t-shirt during his rookie year with the Dodgers. It was a BreakingT product, blue with a picture of Verdugo batting and the quote, “Don’t Let the Kid Get Hot.” Then he got traded for Mookie, and I never wAfter the World Series, I found it while rummaging through some clothes and finally threw it out. In fact, I was looking for it because I was mad at him for defending the fans who tried to knock the ball out of Mookie’s glove.

When you put the current salary trends into that context, they actually make sense and are just keeping up with inflation- hence, $20M is the new $14M, therefore $25M is the new $17.5M etc and suddenly these salary numbers don’t seem so insanely bloated..

The Yankees knew what they were doing picking up Swisher. Scott Brosius was another one. And quite a few others. It wasn’t just about outspending everyone. Their front office innately understood which players would fit into their winning culture. It was that way in the 70s, too. But not during that lull they had in the 80s and early 90s.

He was my favorite Yankees trade of all time. I loved the energy he brought to the team and a part of me wishes he had accepted their token 3 year/$39M extension offer that he turned down.

Gave them a quirky boost of energy and was genuinely effective for them. Probably would have been more successful if he had stayed in NY because of line up protection and the short porch.

That said the bottom line at that stage of a career is to make money and I don’t begrudge him going for the extra $15M he received from Cleveland.

It was a match made in Heaven. Swisher was one of those high-energy players that fans in the northeast corridor adore. He was another in an impressive line of Yankee switch hitters with power. They had Swisher, Teixeira, and Posada at the same time.

After a (short) while the overpays turn into just regular pays. Sure, enormous money is getting doled out all over the league. But the clubs must figure there’s enough gold in them thar hills to pay all the big contracts.

Anyhoo, the Rangers made no secret of their chase after Eovaldi. If they want to pile $75 million on him, fine with me. I don’t sign the checks.

The going price for starting pitching seems sky high this off season. Much higher than predicted by most experts.

Either the bar has been forever risen, or there will eventually be a correction. Sadly I think that these rates are here to stay and this is the new norm.

He can only play the hand he’s dealt, if Henry and his ghouls aren’t willing to greenlight enough spending to actually make any of these moves happen, what choice does Breslow have other than the media/PR blitz to try and impress us all by how close they came to turning that “interest” into a signed contract?

Yeah I think if he does sign a long term deal it will be for 5-7 years- just a question of AAV or total salary commitment…. but for a while there he was viewed as the top pitching arm on the market, so if Fried could get 8 years/$218M and they’re roughly the same age, I think Burnes could be looking at a minimum of 7 years/$252M.

I was shocked when I first read about Eovaldi and this contract, but as I reflect, it really isn’t that shocking. He is still only 34. His velocity was still great this past season. Guy is a workout beast, and most of all, Texas fans love him as a guy who becomes an offense killer during high stakes games. Rangers would not have won 2023 WS without him, just like Boston would not have won 2018 WS without him.
