Braves Sign Jurickson Profar

By Darragh McDonald | January 23, 2025 at 11:59pm CDT

The Braves announced that they have signed free agent outfielder Jurickson Profar to a three-year, $42MM deal. The MVP Sports Group client will make $12MM this year and then $15MM in each of the next two seasons. Atlanta designated right-hander Connor Gillispie in a corresponding move.

Profar, 32, has been wildly inconsistent in his career but is coming off his best season. Once a top prospect with the Rangers, he made it to the majors as a 19-year-old but struggled in his first few seasons. He eventually showed some promise but frustratingly alternated between good and bad seasons.

He had one of those down seasons in 2023, which is why the Padres were able to sign him last offseason for just $1MM, barely above the league minimum. The Padres probably couldn’t have dreamed about the return on investment they would eventually get from that.

Profar got into 158 games and stepped to the plate 668 times. His 15.1% strikeout rate and 11.4% walk rate were both strong numbers but fairly normal for him. He managed to do more damage when he connected, without sacrificing any of his trademark plate discipline. His 24 home runs were a career high. The three numbers in his .280/.380/.459 slash line were all personal bests as well, apart from a .471 slugging percentage in his nine-game debut back in 2012. His 139 wRC+ easily eclipsed his previous personal high of 113 and was also put him in the top 15 among qualified hitters last year. The switch-hitter did that damage from both sides of the plate, with a 137 wRC+ as a lefty and 147 as a righty.

Given his capricious production over the years, it would be fair to be a bit skeptical that he could keep that kind of performance going. However, there are some encouraging numbers under the hood. Profar’s 44.8% hard hit hate rate, 91.1 mile-per-hour average exit velocity and 7.2% barrel rate were all significantly better than anything he had done before. His .302 batting average on balls in play was a career high but just a bit above the .291 league average.

Though Profar has played all over the diamond in his career, he’s mostly a left fielder now. He’s barely played the other outfield slots in his career. He hasn’t really been an infield regular since 2019. He logged just 18 innings at first base last year, the only place he played apart from left field during the campaign.

Profar’s work in left hasn’t been especially well regarded. Last year, he was given a grade of -8 from Defensive Runs Saved and -6 from Outs Above Average. Despite that, thanks to his huge offense and ten stolen bases, FanGraphs considered him to be worth 4.3 wins above replacement on the season.

That production was huge for the Padres, given that they had notable financial restraints, which is why they took that $1MM flier on Profar. They surely would have welcomed him back, given the longstanding ties between Profar and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller. However, their financial situation is perhaps even more grim now than it was a year ago. They reportedly need to make significant cuts to the budget while also looking for solutions on the roster. In addition to Profar’s absence in left, they have question marks behind the plate, in the rotation and at shortstop.

Profar has also expressed a fondness for San Diego and probably wanted to go back, but he also probably recognized that this is probably his best chance at a free agent payday. He had previously signed a three-year, $21MM deal with the Padres going into 2021 but opted out of that pact after two years. He settled for modest one-year deals in the past two offseasons but has now secured himself a strong three-year deal. MLBTR predicted a three-year, $45MM deal for him at the start of the offseason.

For Atlanta, outfield has stood out as a clear area for improvement this winter. Ronald Acuña Jr. suffered a torn ACL in his left knee last year and missed the second half of the season. He’ll be back in right field at some point in 2025 but probably not on Opening Day. Players like Ramón Laureano and Jorge Soler were used to cover for Acuña’s absence but jettisoned after the season. Soler was flipped to the Angels while Laureano was non-tendered. The club’s acquisition of Jarred Kelenic last offseason also didn’t go especially well. He struck out 29.6% of the time and hit .231/.286/.393 for a wRC+ of 86.

Time will tell how the club plans to play it once everyone is healthy. Michael Harris II will be in center but Atlanta has its designated hitter spot committed to Marcell Ozuna. Profar and Kelenic can flank Harris for now but Acuña will eventually be back. The lefty-swinging Kelenic has better numbers against righties but the club presumably isn’t giving the Profar $42MM to be a short-side platoon guy.

Perhaps Kelenic will eventually get pushed into a fourth outfielder role once Acuña is back, though he may have a bit of time to prove himself worthy of more. Ozuna is an impending free agent, so perhaps the foursome of Harris, Acuña, Profar and Kelenic can better co-exist in 2026 and beyond. Kelenic does have an option remaining, so some time in the minors is possible as well.

With Profar now in the fold, RosterResource calculates Atlanta’s payroll at $212MM and their competitive balance tax number at $230MM. The latter is $11MM shy of this year’s base threshold. They opened last year at $223MM, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts.

President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has previously said that he expects payroll to rise and that the club is willing to pay the tax again this year. However, most of his moves have been focused on adding financial breathing room. As mentioned, Soler was flipped in a salary dump and Laureano was cut. Travis d’Arnaud had his club option turned down. The club restructured the contracts of Aaron Bummer and Reynaldo López to kick some money down the road.

If there is still some powder dry, then perhaps Atlanta will pivot to adding some pitching in the coming weeks. They were connected to Nathan Eovaldi earlier in the winter and reportedly had an agreement in place with Jeff Hoffman, with Hoffman to be stretched out as a starter, before they grew concerned by something they saw in his shoulder during his physical. They were also connected to reliever Tanner Scott earlier in the winter. All those guys have signed elsewhere but the interest indicates Atlanta is looking to add to the staff.

For clubs still looking for outfield help, the market is essentially out of everyday players now. Juan Soto, Teoscar Hernández, Anthony Santander, Tyler O’Neill and Profar are now all off the board. The best remaining outfielders are role players like Harrison Bader, Randal Grichuk and Alex Verdugo. Clubs like the Royals, Astros and Blue Jays have been connected to Profar this winter, though the Jays signed Santander earlier this week.

Gillispie, 27, just signed a non-guaranteed contract with Atlanta in November. He made his major league debut with Cleveland last year but only logged eight innings and was non-tendered at season’s end. In his minor league career, he has thrown 426 1/3 innings with a 4.01 earned run average, 24.3% strikeout rate and 9.4% walk rate. Atlanta will have one week of DFA limbo to figure out what’s next for him. Since the waiver process takes 48 hours, any potential trade talks would have to come together in the next five days.

Robert Murray of FanSided was first with the agreement between Atlanta and Profar.

The money he would require would be better spent elsewhere as the jays already have Varsho, Springer, Santander starting Schinder, Barger and Loperfido are all corner guys and Straw can also be an option. That 13 million could be used on Esteves or mad max

I was kind of hoping they would just say screw it and sign Profar as well as those guys. Given everything that has happened the last few seasons they should just blow past the 2nd tax tier and improve in anyway they
can to try to regain some good will from the fans as well as improve their image with players.

Rick – Agreed, but they keep saying they want someone who can hit LHP well and also able to cover 2B is a bonus.

If they don’t need Profar, then they don’t need Bregman or Arenado. Let’s hope neither signs with the Red Sox.

Fever Pitch Guy, Arenado would be a trade. bregman is a free agent but Arenado is a trade candidate. not a free agent.

I don’t think Arenado and his .646 OPS against left handed pitching last year would be much help. Facts are Arenado doesn’t do much hitting against anyone lately.

So you think Profar and Bregman are comparable? That puts you at odds with every baseball insider out there. Profar had a career year. You think he’s going to repeat it and the Sox should have bought high? Bregman had an excellent second half—playing with bone chips in his elbow. I guess if the Sox actually do sign him we can count on you to rip their miserable off season, because Crochet is “unproven,” despite having suitors everywhere and being routinely ranked as one of the five best starters in the game.

Ken – I totally agree! The Red Sox keep using the excuse they need him because he’s a RHB, but he’s got serious reverse splits for each of the past three years. He has sucked against LHP since 2022, but they want him to “balance” the lineup by batting righthanded? This is nothing more than Cora wanting his BFF.

stel – They are comparable in that they both can play 3B, SS and 2B and both can hit from the right side of the plate. therefore they fit the profile of what the Red Sox are publicly seeking.

Would I rather give Profar $42M/3 years vs Bregman $150M/5 years? Absolutely.

Nobody is saying Profar is worth what Bregman will likely get, we all know Bregman is the far better defensive player.

Simm, at 3/42 I would not have liked the signing by SD. I defended that first contract with opt outs throughout the term and yes, last year was a big win for both SD and JP (he got a payday).

I’ll look at it like this – at 14 mil I’d rather have Dylan than JP. Let’s see what Tirso has to offer.

Hopefully, Dylan is in rotation now – unless a total blow you away / can’t refuse offer comes along.

El Paso numbers are significantly inflated due to the dry air and elevation, if yiu have been there you would know.

Dry, desert air at elevation compared to the marine layer at sea level.

          Big difference.

Yes, I was projecting based upon my best judgement, not based upon El Paso numbers. He took a major leap however at AAA last year, adding considerable exit velocity and loft to his swing. He’s a big guy with incredible bat speed, but is only now growing into his power.

If you mean like when they offloaded McGriff and Sheffield? That isn’t going to happen. Manny, XB, Tatis, Darvish, Croneworth and Merrill aren’t going anywhere. Suarez will walk next year. So will Arraez and Cease. You got get something for them and probably knock $20M to $25 M off payroll in the process. Get down to where AZ and SF are. That is a budget that is sustainable

On the case of Seattle, yes. You have a cheapskate owner. Bigger valuation and making more revenue than the Padres, sizeable media market and nice margins. 19% in 2023. But the payroll is 17th. Down with the Twins. Does he really care about his team or their fans? What’s his excuse?

And then Manny’s salary goes up $8 million in 2026 and another $14 million on top of that in 2027.. At least Darvish’s contract was somewhat front-loaded, and Tatis’ doesn’t escalate until 2029.

Very happy for Profar and hope the Braves are too. AJP has a conundrum. Either trade what’s left of a battered farm system that might get you another shot at the playoffs but nothing later, trade Cease now to fill a few holes that ultimately don’t help since you’re losing Cease or run out what you’ve got and hope somehow you back into the playoffs even though you’re facing the Big Blue Deathstar multiple times this season and now facing Corbin freaking Burnes with the DBacks… Not good odds no matter how you slice it. I will still cheer them on regardless even as I suspect Dodger fans did for their beloved team when they had to live through the McCourt fiasco years. At least they have a prime TV contract which covers a lot of sins. Padres? Not so much.

Very good???? On the verge of trading their best pitcher. No LF. No C. No money. Only a matter of time before Manny goes full sulk. Too many albatross contracts and the 28th ranked farm. And if all that isnt gloomy enough Padres fan has a nasty legal battle completely engrossing ownership that could drag on for years. If MLB doesnt step in and force a sale the Padres will soon be a shell of a once potent and rising team. Sad days for baseball fans in SD.

The Padres know Profar better than anyone else and made him an offer they felt was fair. The Braves doubled that offer. I can’t fault Profar for taking the money.

The Padres have increased payroll $40 million and CBT payroll by $20 million over the end of last season. Currently they have the 6th highest payroll in baseball and are one of 5 teams to increase their payroll over last season. Even after losing their RSN deal their revenue grew to the point that they are now a revenue sharing paying team. They are not filing bankruptcy.

They are not cutting payroll; they are just not making questionable moves to pay a 32-year-old player that has not been a consistent performer to the point he has averaged just 1.5 WAR with the Padres and plays poor defense. I get why they didn’t sign Profar. I don’t like it, but I understand.

Last season Profar was not on the Padres yet on January 24th. Neither was Wandy Peralta or Dylan Cease. Neither was Arraez, D Peralta, Solano, Scott, Hoeing, Adam, and a couple others I am forgetting. The only FA of note they had signed by January 24th was Yuki Matsui and Woo Suk Go.

Plenty of people on this site and writers were blasting the Padres in years past for not giving prospects a chance. Now they will. Ornelas was expected to be really good when signed to a big deal at 16. Now he is 24 and finally getting his shot. I am excited to see what he can do. Still hope the Padres pick up a backup like Peralta but since Profar is not coming back let the kid play.

      How does it make sense?

Won’t pay Santander $16 mil for 5 years but willing to pay Profar $14 mil for 3 years.

And after the deferrals Santander’s true value was calculated at $14 per over 5 years

Santander is 2 years younger, so yeah it’s slightly longer but the contract ends at the same age Profars does.

Not to mention Santander made sense to fill the outfield for 1 year, and could slide over and replace ozuna at DH after Ozuna’s contract ends.

Hopefully that shortstop is ha-seong Kim, if not I’ve seen articles all over the place suggesting that we trade for bo bichette, but I don’t see any reason the Jay’s would do that. They aren’t in rebuild mode, and even after a down year bichette still has immense talent. If they were to trade him, they’d want a haul. The only way I see the braves getting him is if he’s still underperforming by the trade deadline and won’t cost that much in prospect or player capital.

Bichette rumors are surfacing because the Jays outright said they are looking to trade him.

Not sure he’s a good player to go after though. Underperforming and contract ending soon. Braves certainly won’t pay him so you bank on him having 1 good bounce back season?

Anything is better than Arcia of course, but Bichette isn’t exactly a great opportunity or anything. Factor in what it might cost to trade for him and probably not worth it.

He now has no resources to make his team better. Preller’s deal is up next year. I’d be surprised if he isn’t in charge of another club in ‘27 with the current mess in SD. Unless they get things sorted out

If Jon Mozeliak would’ve traded half the prospect capital that preller has in the last 3 years—the cards would be horrible & have the worst farm in baseball.

I used to really think Preller was a bad GM, but it’s become pretty apparent that most of the time he is doing what ownership tells him. That’s likely how he kept his job for so long. Seeing how differently the team was run under Ron Fowler, then Peter Seidler and now his family the transactions involved in each time period clearly were not of Preller’s doing. The changes in the way the franchise spends/ operates totally line up with who was in the owners box. Plus what Preller did last year with the roster, losing Soto, Hader, Snell, Lugo & Wacha was pretty admirable.

Preller’s only major league FA signings last offseason were Matsui ($3.25 million), Woo Suk Go ($1.75 million), and Wandy Peralta ($4.25 million). 2024 salaries in parentheses.

The trades last season brought the Padres King, Vazquez, Brito, Higashioka, Cease, Arraez, Scott, Adam, Hoeing, and Perez.

Estrada, D Peralta, and Solano were all signed on minor league deals. Kolek was a Rule V pick.

Machado and Bogey are significantly overpaid but still likely to be productive this year.

They need an outfielder, a catcher and a starter at the bare minimum. If they get those 3 things—-I still have to put them ahead of the Giants.

2026 is where things fall apart if they hold Cease and King without adding future value. They’ll have an injured Musgrove and Darvish in the rotation followed by nothing. Arraez & likely Suarez will be gone too. Machado and Bogey are a year further out of their prime……That’s when things are dire.

The padres were a revenue sharing team last year which means they had above avg revenue. They had a payroll of 169m last year. Zero chance they lost 116m. Zero. That would be saying payroll would have needed to be 50m to break even.

You are not wrong. The last 2 months of the season Profar only hit around .230 with 6 HR and 15 RBI. His OPS was around .740 for those 2 months (not completely horrible, but a far cry from his season number of .839). His OBP wasn’t too bad, but it was also propped up a bit with 11 HBP over those 2 months.

It obviously could have been worse, but those numbers the last 2 months look a lot closer to his career numbers than his overall season numbers. Maybe the Jays dodged a bullet.

Morton would have been SP4 without Strider and SP5 with him. They have plenty of options including 2 top prospects (AJSS, Waldrep) that need some time, and other options being Grant Holmes, Ian Anderson (without options), etc.

Rey Lopez should have more IP this year along with Schwellenbach, who was one of the most effective rookie SP last year. They could still add a vet arm (Flaherty, Kyle Gibson, Quintana) to eat some innings that would help. Considering how much they were committing to Hoffman, they know that.

I can definitely see the Braves going into the seasons without picking up a starter and trying an assortment of the arms you mentioned. If it doesn’t work than I wouldn’t be shocked if they make a move in July at the trade deadline. I wonder if they pick up another middle infielder tho or just roll again with Arica

I’d think they’re still keeping tabs on Ha-seong Kim, especially since that’s another Boras client. Who knows what a contract looks like with injury questions…but Arcia isn’t paid much and still would have the starting job until Kim is fully healthy.

I’ve been calling for the braves to nab Kim all off-season. He makes too much sense. With all the heavy hitters the braves have he would be the perfect defensive compliment but also still have a decent bat to boot, and like you said while not the best option, arcia holding it down until Kim gets healthy wouldn’t be bad at all.

I think with the Profar signing it pretty much eliminates the chances of signing Kim. Felt like it was one or the other between upgrading SS or a better OF option. AA has seemingly made it clear hes staying under that next threshold this year. I’d expect a few more low flier on pitchers the closer it gets to the start of the season. 1 year deals, non guaranteed contracts, or split contracts – type of signings.

Maybe that pitcher would be Spencer Turnbull? I wonder if a rotation has ever had more than 3 Spencer’s at one time? lol strider, schwellenbach, and Turnbull? It’d make for an interesting story, plus he and Holmes can take turns starting while also coming out of the pen, wouldn’t be bad for either one of them in my opinion.

I don’t think it necessarily does. AA might still make a push for Flaherty if the price and years of contract go down. He could also work out a 2 year back loaded deal with Kim. But he will probably just wait until the trade deadline to do something.

Kelenic isn’t going anywhere, i imagine. They invested too much into acquiring him. He will be the RF until Acuna comes back and then move into the 4th outfielder slot since he can play all three positions. Unless they can find someone who wants to trade a pitcher for him.

I wouldn’t necessarily say that we’ve invested too much into him because we barely traded anything of value for him, but he did get way too much playing time last year in my opinion, and we did just agree to terms on a deal without going through an arbitration hearing, but if he’s not clicking by the time acuna is back, he’s as good as gone, or atleast stashed in the minors and non tendered at years end. He’s had way more than enough time to get it figured out, with two different teams now. We all need to call it as it is. Kelenic is a 1st round draft pick BUST!

They took on over 20 million in dead money to get him. I’d call that a significant investment even though they didn’t lose any prospects. Is he a bust? Yeah for sure. They thought he was going to be their everyday left fielder for years, not a backup outfielder. That said, he’s still young and he has value. He’s going nowhere unless they can flip him for a 5th starter or a high leverage reliever.

No problem Jesse. I didn’t see that reference to Boras. I must have read the article after they changed it. I just knew the only Boras client AA has signed since he came to Atlanta was Dallas Keuchel. Shea Langeliers changed representation to Boras after he was drafted by the Braves. So technically, 2 players under AA’s Braves regime have been repped by Boras.

Little surprising in that Braves are great 1yr deal specialists, but Profar should be able to get 3yrs in this pricey FA offseason not knowing the terms yet. More demand than supply for OF bats even if he’s a subpar defensive player.

That’s pretty scary if I’m Philly, looks like the Braves are going to reclaim that division. Harris II, Acuna Jr, Olsen, Ozuna, Profar? Then that pitching staff? They had about as bad a year as a team could have collectively and still made the playoffs. An upgrade of that significance with Acuna coming back pretty much locks up the NL East from where I’m standing.

In real life, the NL East will be won by the team that stays the healthiest overall, and avoids too many down years from established players. I won’t be surprised if any of the Braves / Mets / Phillies take the division as they are all very good teams in the non-Dodgers world.

Profar is one of those additions for the Braves that might work out, and might not if he regresses to the mean.

Do damn near nothing all winter long except sign some 37 year old “infielder” who may or may not be cooked once he sets foot in T-Mobile Park, grab some random AAA depth guys, then bring back Kelenic in a trade after all the dysfunctional BS him and Seattle went through for 3 years. At this point I don’t even care if the moves they make are good, I just want something to break up this monotonous winter.

My expectations are low, I think the best case scenario is they sign Moncada and hope he’s not totally washed up. Dipoto’s best work since the Mariners have been a contenderish team has usually happened around the trade deadline, so I think that’s their impact play once again.

Totally agree: they could be saving up the majority of money they have available for the trade deadline. Still would like them to pull a trade for some sort of infield asset who can hit. Not pulling for a Justin Turner redux.

He’ll most likely be a starter (RF) until Acuna is back, then backup/late inning replacement. Time is running out for him. They may give Acuña an occasional day off since Ozuna will be DH.

Always find it hilarious when comments either thinks it’s their money or they think it’s an overpayment when clearly 3 years $42 mil for a guy coming off an All-Star year is very reasonable. Sure, he has an injury history but if healthy it’s a huge upgrade from Kelenic, De La Cruz or Eli White. He has power, drives in runs and hits for average. Plus he gets on base at a reasonably high rate. I like the signing. Projection was for him to get 4 years $80 mil and you think paying half of that is too much ? You’re stuck in the 80’s-90’s salaries lol because in 2025 this is a good deal if he produces even 20 HR 75 RBI’s hits .270 with .340 OBP

You’re right, it will be a good deal if he puts up those numbers. He did well in 22 and 24, but not in 21 or 23. I guess 3/42 is the going rate for his potential production.

Profar has played 913 of his team’s 1002 games since the start of the 2018 season. That is 91% of the games. He is in top 20 in durability over the last 7 seasons. Profar is inconsistent, but he shows up and puts on the uniform damn near every game.

He hit .297 with .864 OPS last season but that was in PCL where that is just a 114 OPS+. Like most prospects you just never know. He is 24 and not a kid anymore. If ozuna has another year like the past two, the braves would be foolish not to bring him back. Yes he’s getting older, but his play has improved significantly, and he’s seemingly put his personal issues behind him. It’s always easy to replace a dh, but can you really say that about 40 hr 100 rbi type of dh, much less any player with that type of production?

Call me crazy, but how are his defensive metrics at short? Can we move him back to the infield? Cause Arcia is so bat with his bat that it negates any value he brings with his glove. And I truly believe we can put Kelenic out in left and he bring more value than Arcia. And if not, you can find left fielders easily. They are everywhere. U can find an upgrade on free agency for cheap right now if we want now.

Perfect signing. Now trade for Cease and take a couple fliers on some relievers that had down years with split contracts and they’ll be good to go. I know everybody wants a shortstop, and I’m sure the Braves do too, but world class shortstops don’t grow on trees. That will have to wait til next offseason.

Will be a great leadoff hitter until Acuña gets back. Profar, Albies, Riley, Olson, Ozuna, Harris, Murphy, Kelenic, Arcia. That’s an elite lineup, then when you substitute Acuña for Kelenic, it becomes one of the best, if not the best in the league.

Not even close to an elite lineup. 1/3 of that lineup is an automatic out. Profar could very well end up bombing and be useless hitter #4. Olson and Harris are pretty big question marks with what you’ll get as well.

They have 3 hitters to be confident about with Albies, Riley, and Ozuna

Neither Olson or Harris will be bad, so don’t misinterpret my words on them, but they might not be all that reliable either. I’d add Acuña in that category as well. As great as he’s shown consistency hasn’t been his strength.

Just being real. Even if everyone clicks though you still have 3 automatic outs in there.

The Padres know Profar. If they were not willing to go $14 million AAV, I trust their judgement. They weren’t willing to give him more than the $7.75 million the Rockies paid him in 2023 and it was the right decision. The Padres paid him $1 million in 2024.

A perfectly cromulent salary AAV and contract length for a veteran with yo yo career numbers who gets to capitalize on a very good season, potbelly his last best chance at this kind of deal- and the overall deal value is modest enough that if it doesn’t work out, the Braves have other options and can pivot without Profar’s salaries being prohibitive.

Good deal for both team and player.

This is how it’s done. The Braves are the model of fair salaries and contract lengths.

Your predictive text said potbelly instead of probably. You must have one of those wife’s that seen a baby pig in a short and wants one so you looked it up lol.

So LF is now a battle between Ornelas and Lockridge loser gets 4th OF

Back up catcher is Maldanado vs Sullivan

And we may convert Morejon and Hoeing back to starters which could ruin both as it has others in the past

And they’re still over the tax line so any QO from Suarez King Cease Arraez nets them extra 4ths not 1sts.

And guess Wade vs Rosario for 2B.

    Well. Alright.

Before this contract is over, I could see Profar underperforming, being waived by the Braves and once again a Padre.

All we need now is Flaherty , and a reliever who can pass a physical.

It trips me out that a very average player over his career can get a decent contract after one good year (fluke?) Well, Profar actually had a decent 2022 also, but he had to settle for a one year deal with the Rockies where he was a below average player. Braves will regret this

It is a good time for the Padres to trade Dylan Cease (RP-S) and Luis Arraez (1B) to the Minnesota Twins for Christian Vasquez (C), Willi Castro (All-Star Utility) Infield/Outfield switch hitter) and Chris Paddock. (RP-S) The Friars already have Jake Cronenworth to place 1B for the next several years. The Friars would be sending $27,.750 million in salary with absorbing $23.9 million in salary, saving the Friars $3.85 million in salary cap and adding 3 players that will improve the Friars on the field product. The Twins on a very tight budget, would solve their problem at first base while slightly upgrading their rotation.

This is a terrible deal for the padres.

      Cease and Arraez

      For

      Paddock, Castro and Vasquez…saving a whole 3m.

You can’t be serious with this trade idea. This isn’t even remotely close.

I’d want more than those 3 for Cease and Arraez if I were San Diego. While Vasquez, Castro and Paddock fill needs, they don’t compare to what they’d be giving up. Minnesota doesn’t have the cash to send because both teams are trying to find ways to create more of it.

Seems like a “well we had to do something” signing. Terrible defense and coming off a career year at age 31. But not a huge investment like so many signings these days.

I think AA does a good job, but I don’t see how this works out. Profar is almost never any good. In the equivalent of 6-7 seasons, he has 8.4 bWAR, and 6.6 of that was basically in contract years. Plus he is 32.

It feels like there had to be a lot of teams interested that the Braves had to go to 3 years. I thought he would get 1 year guaranteed with vesting options/something like a buyout on an option and of course I assumed the Padres were going to be the ones to give it to him.

I was thinking he’d be a great depth piece on the bench for the Yankees and an insurance policy on Dominguez but at 3 years I understand them not being in on it.

It feels like for the Braves it’s a lot to commit…

Braves have needed another outfielder for a while. Especially with Acuna being more of a question mark. 3 years is a risk for this guy but if he can produce even half of what he did last year, he’ll be a much better 3rd outfielder than they’ve had in years.
