Roki Sasaki Reportedly Informs Several Teams They Are Out Of Running

By Darragh McDonald | January 13, 2025 at 3:10pm CDT

3:10pm: The Rangers have also been informed that they are out of the running, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The Diamondbacks never got a meeting with Sasaki and won’t be the destination either, per John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix.

2:56pm: The Mets have also been informed that they are out of the running, per Joel Sherman of The New York Post.

2:35pm: The Yankees have been told that right-hander Roki Sasaki will not be signing with them, reports Jack Curry of Yes Network. That’s the second team that is reportedly out, with the Giants having also been told that they won’t be Sasaki’s destination. Andy Martino of SNY adds that the Mets aren’t expected to sign him either, though it’s unclear if they have been given a clear denial like the Giants and Yankees. As for teams that are still in the mix, Sasaki reportedly met with the Padres in San Diego recently, per a report from Dennis Lin, Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. This was after his recent meeting with the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Sasaki has been on the radar of MLB clubs for years, but his situation became very interesting once it became clear that he would be coming over to North America this winter. Since he is not yet 25 years old, he is considered an amateur under MLB’s international signing rules. That makes a massive difference in his earning power and opens him up to potentially sign with any club.

Per the international bonus pool system, each club has a limit on how much signing bonus money they can give to international amateurs, with this year’s pools ranging from $5-8MM. Broadly speaking, the large-market clubs have the smaller pools and vice versa. Teams can trade for more pool money but can’t add more than 60% of their initial pool allotment.

The Chiba Lotte Marines, Sasaki’s Nippon Professional Baseball club, will also be owed a posting fee. However, the value of that fee will be a percentage of his signing bonus and won’t be a large number either. Per the NPB posting rules, the fee is 20% of a deal’s first $25MM, 17.5% of the next $25MM, and 15% of further spending. Since Sasaki will be capped by the pool system, his deal will lead to a modest bonus, with the posting fee adding 20%.

Had Sasaki waited until he turned 25, he would have been considered a professional and could have signed a deal for any amount. That’s the route Yoshinobu Yamamoto took, eventually securing a $325MM deal from the Dodgers.

It can be debated as to who is the better pitcher between Yamamoto and Sasaki, but the point is that there’s tremendous upside in getting Sasaki aboard for such a small investment. Teams that normally don’t sign top free agents can become theoretical fits, while the larger clubs have big payrolls and competitive balance tax concerns, making them very interested as well.

By coming to North America now, Sasaki has seemingly illustrated that maximizing his short-term earnings is not his top priority. Since each club has roughly the same ability to offer him a bonus now, he should be focused on non-financial criteria for making his decision. It could come down to geography, a club’s reputation developing pitching or perhaps a team’s long-term competitive outlook. His agent, Joel Wolfe, said the plan was for teams to make pitches before the holidays. Sasaki would then travel to visit the home cities of certain clubs after the holidays.

A decision needs to come soon. Sasaki can’t officially sign until January 15 when the new pool year starts, but he also has to be signed by January 23, when his posting window closes. Now that there’s only a handful of days left, it seems he is narrowing the field.

The Yankees and Mets both reportedly met with Sasaki in December but it seems that he won’t be coming to New York to join either club. Both teams already have plenty of rotation options, though they surely would have welcomed the problem of adding Sasaki into the mix and further crowding things. The Yankees are already feel good enough about their pitching depth that they are reportedly shopping Marcus Stroman.

Perhaps signing Sasaki wouldn’t have added too much to the urgency to trade Stroman. MLB teams often use six-man rotations when folding in a Japanese pitcher, as the NPB usually sees starters throw once a week as opposed to the five-day rotation in North America. It’s a moot point now but the Yanks still project to start the year with a strong group that includes Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt, which is why Stroman’s available.

The Mets have more uncertainty in their rotation but still have plenty of arms to potentially fill out their rotation. Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Paul Blackburn, Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill are all possibilities. There are question marks with many of those names but that’s eight viable candidates of varying degrees for five rotation spots.

Many observers have considered the Dodgers and the Padres to be the two most likely landing spots, so it’s not especially surprising that San Diego is still in the mix. No one can be sure what Sasaki’s priorities are, but it’s been suggested that the club’s West Coast location and strong performance in recent years are points in their favor, as well as Sasaki’s friendship with Yu Darvish.

As pointed out by The Athletic and others, the Padres could probably use Sasaki more than any other club. They have known financial constraints but plenty of holes to fill, which is why players like Luis Arráez, Dylan Cease, Jake Cronenworth and Robert Suarez have been in trade rumors this winter. Adding a pitcher of Sasaki’s caliber at such a discounted rate would be tremendously helpful for them.

As of right now, the rotation projects to include Darvish, Cease and Michael King, with plenty of question marks beyond that. Adding Sasaki would give the Padres a very strong front four, but it could also perhaps increase the chances of the Friars trading Cease for players that are cheaper and more controllable but less proven.

It’s still anyone’s guess what team will be chosen by Sasaki and why. As mentioned, the Jays are still a possibility, based on Sasaki’s recent trip to Toronto. The Padres are obviously in there as well. The Athletic mentions the Dodgers, Rangers, Cubs and Mariners are clubs that are thought to be in the mix. It’s unknown if Sasaki will visit with any of those other clubs but resolution is coming soon, with more information perhaps trickling out in the coming days.

if its dodgers, i dont see how mlb can afford not to block it

you can’t just simply let the Japanese WBC team all join the same MLB team because they like playing with each other and don’t care about money enough to incentivize the alternative

regardless, if he goes to any other team and wins a championship… then mad respect

if he goes to dodgers and wins a championship… no respect from me

And to be honest why would anyone go to San Diego right now with all the infighting, not sure who is running the team, racial accusations and so on. The Dodgers are the best ran franchise in baseball right now are coming off a World Series championship season. Not even a Dodger fan observation just being honest. If I were anyone and money wasn’t an option I’d have a hard time not choosing the Dodgers

That’s the thing, Misfit. People have all sorts of preferences that don’t align with others. I, for one, would consider San Diego to be my second preferred destination if I were an MLB player behind my hometown Mariners. San Diego is a great city that has great beaches and is clean, fun, laid back. LA is a little too busy for me. I can certainly understand why some would choose LA, but we can’t project our preferences on to others. Roki may very well actually want that rumored smaller market.

By all reports I’ve read he wants to go somewhere where he’ll get developed The Dodgers have been known hysterically as a pitchers haven. And again the infighting to me would a red flag

As a long-time Angeleno sitting in the middle of the greatest environmental disaster in a generation, I’d say there’s a fair amount of uncertainty here as well, no matter how well the Dodgers org is run.

If I were Sasaki, I’d probably choose Seattle or San Diego, because both are contenders with solid pitching development systems in far less ecologically fraught metro areas.

If Sasaki chooses the Padres on the 15th, in 6 years the Dodgers could still pay him “the ungodly amount of money he wants” because he will be a free agent.

Yes historically* sorry. And yes The Dodgers make too much sense for him not to sign here. Seattle collapsed last year. The Padres once again are in a civil war with each other that probably won’t be figured out before the start of the season. The dodgers are the defending champions and the best ran organization in the sport. How will I look foolish if he chooses elsewhere? I’m not saying anything other than the truth if that rubs you the wrong way that sounds like a you problem

If he “wants developed”, then he should sign with Cleveland. For a team that hasn’t won the World Series in most of our lifetimes, they have developed some very good arms over the decades.

And The Dodgers have always been known as a pitchers team. It’s not until just recently that the narrative changed. Have the most Cy Young award winners in history and most no hitters in history. Why would he choose Cleveland over Los Angeles? Some of your reasonings are embarrassing

Dodgers pitchers cant seem to pitch two healthy years in a row. From the perspective of a young pitcher trying to get paid that seems important.

The Dodgers have developed some really good pitchers in recent years, but they tend to fall to injuries. Urias, Buehler, May, etc.

The Mariners have also developed some really good pitchers – and their young starters have not (so far) been susceptible to injury. Gilbert, Kirby, Miller, Woo, . . .

I think the Mariners come out ahead in recent pitcher development.

If he just wants to win, no one has a stronger argument than the Dodgers.

The Mariners and the Dodgers are my two teams, so I’d like to see him on one of those. But since the Mariners have never won the World Series, and the Dodgers can afford to buy the expensive players, I hope he signs with the Mariners.

I will say he is overrated no matter where he goes. He is very, very good. But people assume that he will be better than Yamamoto, King, Hunter Greene, Aaron Nola, Nestor Cortes. Let’s wait and see. And he had minor injuries last year. Still, any team would want him. He can be exceptional and overrated.

teams that sign free agents who have rejected a qualifying offer may have to forfeit money from their international signing pool. The penalty depends on whether the team is over the luxury tax threshold and how many QO-rejecting free agents they sign. Yanks are way over the 2rd threshold and if they had intentions on signing, for example, Bregman, then the penalty would’ve been loss off 2 additional pics (already lost two for signing Fried) plus they would’ve lost pool money they were holding in to in case Sasaki choose them. They MAY have guys they want to sign, or they may choose to forgo adding amateur talent to improve the mlb team immediately.

Exactly. Why isn’t “Takerdbacks” complaining about the Mets? Pure and simple because the Dodgers won. The definition of a sore loser.

I am not claiming everything is completely equal. Big media markets do have an advantage. But the game is entertaining and anyone wishing a ban or a boycott should know they are only helping other sports leagues poach fans and not helping baseball.

It’s not the Dodgers fault that so many other teams are located in smaller markets and are fiscally handicapped (but don’t expect the Dodgers to rectify a problem for the sport when they are fully exploiting the situation).

@Twkerdbacks – Absolutely, there is a point it becomes ridiculous.

Yankees/Red Sox would have tons of mound visits in game…and they changed that.

Dodgers and Rays abused 10 man IL and it became 15 for pitchers. Plus, they limited times you could be optioned in a year because Rays abused that.

Teams abused international signings by going past the cap, so they eliminated that:

Even going back, Charles Finley tried to sell players to Red Sox & Yankees…and the commissioner vetoed that.

The amount of money Sasaki will get paid upon signing with whomever will be very little money relative to unrestricted free agency. Every team should be able to sign him. I think the most you can offer is like $11 mil. So, in this case, the Dodgers are not using any financial advantage if he ends up signing there. I get it. You’re mad. But again, he has three right to go where he wants to. It’s not a draft. They’ll be a bunch of other foreign-born players to sign, too this week. They just might not be as advanced.

I don’t want to turn this into a basketball forum, but I’m soooooo tired of all banging on LBJ for choosing to leave Cleveland, and I’m a Cavs fan. I mean, I was mad at how he did it “The Decision,” but he was drafted into a horribly tan organization and after his first contract re-upped for 4 more years. Ppl say “well MJ, Magic, and Bird never left their team to join up.” Well, why would they? Magic was drafted to a team that already had 2 or 3 future HOF and a multiple all-stars. Bird, too. Each team added more future HOF quickly to help. It took Krause a 4 years to get Pip and Grant by, and he eventually got it right. All 3 teams had future HOF GMs and coaches. It takes a team to win. It’s not like there weren’t 29 other teams with 30 other stats to compete against.

LBJ leaving a bad organization to have a chance to win a chip is no different than Gerrit Cole delaying film Pittsburgh to join the Astros, Ohtani leaving the Angels to join the Dodgers or any other FA that leaves a non-competitive situation for hours of a brighter future and a chance to compete on a better team. What did team loyalty reward Ernie Banks (No free agency back then) or Frank Thomas get for their loyalty? Nothing at all in terms of a world series appearance. Keep in mind that LBJ went to loosing teams when he rejoined the Cavs and the Lakers and Miami was mid at best.

Even with the uncertainty, SD still has a fairly competitive roster and he’d have the opportunity to go up against a stacked team in LA on a regular basis. Great way to show how good he is. Great division to showcase his talent while still being close to home.

It appears friendship is highly valued in Japanese culture. Ohtani and Yamamoto are close friends. Darvish and Sasaki are reported to be friends, and in Sasaki’s case he’s getting a max amateur deal no matter where he chooses so money isn’t even something to consider unless you consider taxes. Why shouldn’t he want to play with his boy? I don’t think he goes to the Dodgers because he is a rival of Yamamoto and probably would enjoy playing against him and renewing that rivalry in America.

@kingbum. Preller and Pete(R.i.p.) have been scouting him for years that why he had a darvish jersey and talks to him. Ohtani asked the angels to get more money in the same situation. Would you be the dumb team that says you don’t need anymore money or make a trade to acquire 2-3. Why wouldn’t sasaki asked. He’s taking a gamble coming early.

I agree, I think he’s losing hundreds of millions by coming early. If teams gotten a chance to see Yamamoto in MLB before signing him to his deal no way he gets $325 million after last season. By making this move now I think he values competition over money. That makes me think he’s more interested in beating Yamamoto than teaming with him and why I.think ultimately the Padres will win and he’s just using the Dodgers to get the Padres to max out their amateur pool.

Of course everyone wants LA. They get paid alot and then they can get astronomical stats. It ruins other teams and fans. Only selfish people want this. as a dbacks fan I wouldn’t want a super team. Dbacks will be fine. It’s great that Burnes signed with them for at least a couple years. I’m thinking he may stay there long term with his home in Scottsdale. It’s very convenient he doesn’t have to travel for Spring Training or 1/2 of the regular season. The DBacks have a good chance to make the playoffs this year. Verrrry close last year. It’s Gallen, Naylor, Suarez, Monty and Kelly’s walk year plus I think Gurriel can opt out after the season. These veterans are all especially motivated to put their best game out there before likely hitting free agency in 2026 (not that they wouldn’t otherwise but still…). Plus DBacks have a lot of good young talent on the team that will serve them well in the future,

@Seamaholic – you may be right due to the cost factor (or possible regression in Burnes) but they may be moving towards more of a youth movement in 2026 with veterans like Burnes to help out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see further improvement in Pfaadt and Nelson in 2025 to be regulars with Burnes and ERod in their 2026 rotation.

He was not coming to East coast from day one. He’s going to Dodgers or Padres only. MLB is doing whatever they can to promote baseball in Japan with Asian players. Padres have Darbish who is a mentor to Sasaki so that could be a part of why Padres are still in race otherwise it’s been Dodgers from the start.

Sadly right now on paper I think they are. But there’s still time for AJP to make some moves to improve the team. It was mid-March when he traded for Cease. I’m just concerned he doesn’t have the ammo this year to make any similar trades that will improve the team. Time will tell… and Roki would help meeting the goal of not only improving the team this year but for the future.

The dbacks seem better because they sign d Burnes and traded for Naylor.

They lost a better player in Walker than Naylor.

They also lost Pederson who as a monster for them last year. I still have them as a positive gain but it reduced some of the gains of Burnes.

It’s pretty close. The dbacks need some pen help. Plus they were behind the padres to start with. Almost every star for the padres was injured last year as well.

Padres will add some fill ins at the least.

How many businesses does Steve Cohen control? All he’d need to do is give Sasaki corporate jet privileges with one of those companies. I imagine most the owners now could do the same thing if they have businesses outside of baseball they control. Sasaki calls the travel secretary and the travel secretary calls one of those outside businesses and arranges it. Seems like a simple go around to me

because that would be fun to see how Roki’s signing could affect an entire signing class for the winning team in the sweepstakes. not as good as signing Roki but a little consolation prize for not getting his talent into your org.

And this is a surprise? None of these Japanese players are signing with anyone other than West Coast teams like the Dodgers…especially with the posting system gone.

If Sasaki didn’t already have access to millions in endorsements, he would sign with any club (like the players from Cuba, Dominican Republic or Venezuela).

Appreciate him not wasting the Yankees time any further so they can move on to the rest of the international market.

More Japanese players have signed with a team that is not on the West Coast than have signed with a team that is. The Red Sox have signed the most Japanese players in free agency from Japan.

@Pads – I was thinking more about the new posting system that came with Ohtani’s signing.

But looking at those guys, there are almost the same number of East Coast ones. More than I expected. There’s a lot of fringe players nowhere the caliber of Ohtani, Yamamoto or Sasaski though.

Predictable he will end up with LAD. When comparing him tonpthe Japanese pitchers, Roki is more likely to compare Meada long-term. I don’t think he has the IVB and movement fastball required to be stud. He is no YY or Ohtani either. For the low cost he won’t hurt a team, but he won’t be top 3 start, likely a 4.

The contract won’t be like that at all he can only sign a minor league deal like Ohtani due to age. He’ll get like a $6 mil signing bonus then make league min and go to arb like any rookie. Rest sounds about right.

Not sure why Roki didn’t explore a deal with the Red Sox:
    A) Great pitching coach in Andrew Bailey
    B) Deep MLB-ready farm system, receiving high marks for player development
    C) Young, talented core of players to remain competitive
    D) Plenty of cash to compensate Roki in a long-term deal
    E) Plenty of support experience for Japanese players.

rjtfd….The Red Sox are close to taking off and contending in the A.L. They finished .500 after losing Story, Casas, and Giolitto for most or all of the season. They have 3 legit prospects on the verge of joining a quality young core. Crochet is likely the best pitcher in the AL and Buehler and the return of Giolitto could turn out well. I suspect the Sox will load on college pitching in the next three drafts given they have so many quality position players….and they have a ton of cash to spend, well below the CBT. If they find a RH bat, improve the infield defense, and add a bullpen arm, they will make a run without committing money to players north of 30.

Turning down the New York Yankees seems like a really dumb decision on his part. Why? Because he would be the king in the east for all the advertising dollars. When Jordan played in the NBA, he didn’t make a lot of money from theBulls. He made from advertising. The Los Angeles and San Diego markets are pretty much filled up in advertising by the two so he’s going to be not the second fiddle, but the third fiddle. That means less money he’s gonna make. He doesn’t realize the potential of earned income through signing his name to something.

On a positive side for the teams that have been ruled out they can move on and make an offer to a Free Agent before the sign with someone else
OR pull the trigger on a trade

IF SDP gets Sasaki you would think the possibility that Cease gets traded goes UP
BUT he still might not get traded if they don’t get an offer they like.
(Robert Suarez less likely – there would be no great salary savings)

Possibly Pedro Lopez, Jordan Montgomery, Jon Gray, S. Gray and other trades could happen

He is either going to the Dodgers or the Padres…if he goes to Los Angeles he will be one of many in the rotation and they are the defending World Series Champions. He is a great talent but he is also a very quiet kind of guy and I think the Los Angeles press would be fairly brutal if he has any kind of stumble but just being a “guy” might soften the scrutiny. Signing with the Padres has its advantage for more than one reason…he is a big fan of Yu Darvish and what better mentor for him starting his MLB career, the Padres are one of the few teams that can actually match up with the Dodgers and they have a very good roster even with the few holes they still need to address, Ruben Niebla is a pitching whisperer and would be an excellent pitching coach for him, he would not be just a “guy” and would be a top of the rotation pitcher to go with Darvish, King, Vasquez, Brito, Waldron, Hoeing and Cease…provided the Padres don’t trade him. That rotation would be as good as any team in MLB and when Musgrove gets back they would be legitimate contenders for a World Series Championship, the San Diego press is nowhere as brutal as the press in Los Angeles, the fans would love him and all he would have to do is look at how the fans loved Ha Soeng Kim, AJ Preller can actually speak Japanese and let’s face it they don’t call San Diego “Americas Finest City “ for nothing and Petco is constantly mentioned as the Best Ballpark in America.
It would be refreshing to see him NOT sign with the Dodgers and make San Diego his first home in the USA.

Mariners or padres at this point my guess or a mystery team . Probably doesn’t want to be in the large ny under the microscope market. Then can sign a larger deal later.

Must be nice to be a team that Japanese players will play for. Might be time for MLB to do something instead of just letting 2-3 west coast teams get them all.

The hype on this guy because he’s what, young? These overseas platers get way too much attention. You’d think this was a legit player. Yamamoto was basically a #3 starter, whooopie!
