Dodgers Add Brandon McDaniel To Coaching Staff

By Darragh McDonald | February 5, 2025 at 5:39pm CDT

The Dodgers announced their full coaching staff this week. Most of manager Dave Roberts’ staff is coming back, but there are a few alterations. First base coach Clayton McCullough departed to take the skipper job with the Marlins and will be replaced by Chris Woodward. Third base coach Dino Ebel will also take up a role working with outfielders. MLBTR covered those two developments in November. The club also announced this week that Brandon McDaniel joins the staff as major league development integration coach.

McDaniel, 41, is not new to the organization. He has been working various roles throughout the system over the years, often working in the realm of strength and conditioning. For the past few years, he has had the title of vice president of player performance. He will now have an official role on the staff for what will be his 13th year working for the club at the big league level.

The rest of the staff will be filled out by Danny Lehmann, Bob Geren, Mark Prior, Robert Van Scoyoc, Aaron Bates, Connor McGuiness and Josh Bard, with all of them returning to their previous roles.

Any idea what a “development integration coach” does? The Dodgers announcement didn’t describe it.

He’s the one that pats the newcomers on the backside and says, “Way to go.”

      @highfly
I’m not exactly sure on that but the one thing I am certain about is all sentences regarding L.A. now must begin with, “Dodgers add…” Ahahahahaha!

The title is ambiguous. Sounds to me like a school board position they should’ve had in the South in the 50s. I can’t stand titles for that reason – it a resume-block-filler.

They should call these guys Utility Coaches.

When they have assisteds to the assistant pitching/hitting coaches, it’s too many.

Back in the minors in my day, we had the skipper and two coaches period, and the skipper coached 3rd. Big leagues had four coaches max.

A development integration coach in baseball helps integrate information from various sources to support player development. They also provide guidance on using technology to improve player performance.

Can’t be that, seems to make too much sense and be spot on.

Integration coaches use basic mathematical skills to find areas under the luxury tax curve and to measure the displacement of salary caps from statistical norms.

Once they get a differentiation coach on board, they’re going 162-0.

I’ll never forget when Chris Woodward was the Dodgers 3B coach, and he was heard on live television telling Corey Seager to “GO GO GO”. But Seager ended up not running home because he thought that Woodward “was saying NO NO NO”.
I couldn’t believe that at the major league level, they wouldn’t have figured out this very fundamental concept of the 3B coaching job.

This same thing happened in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. Red Sox Denny Doyle was on third and tagged up on a fly ball. Don Zimmer coaching third. Doyle thought he heard GO GO GO and was thrown out at the plate and forced the game into extra innings.

Signing free agents. Investing in their stadium. Keeping most of the same people in their coaching staff. Keeping scouts on payroll. Yeah I would say that’s pretty significant.

That’s just great. Now they’ve cornered the market on integration coaches!
    When will this madness stop!
Also I hear the Padres may be interested in trading Cease; anyone know anything about this?
