Dodgers Sign Eddie Rosario To Minors Contract

By Mark Polishuk | February 15, 2025 at 12:18pm CDT

The Dodgers have signed outfielder Eddie Rosario to a minor league deal, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC2.  Rosario has been looking for a new team since he was released from a previous minors deal with the Mets back in August.

A veteran of 10 MLB seasons, Rosario’s career highlight ironically came against the Dodgers back in 2021, when Rosario posted an absurd 1.647 OPS over 28 plate appearances in the Braves’ NLCS triumph over Los Angeles.  That incredible performance earned Rosario NLCS MVP honors, and he then earned a championship ring when Atlanta topped the Astros in the World Series.

The Braves re-signed Rosario to a two-year, $18MM free agent deal in the aftermath of that title, though the last three seasons have been much more of a struggle for the veteran.  Rosario didn’t hit well in 2022 before rebounding for a solid 21-homer campaign in 2023, but it wasn’t enough for Atlanta to exercise its $9MM club option on Rosario for the 2024 season.

He instead landed in Washington, where Rosario’s production tailed off so badly that the Nationals released him in July, and a return to the Braves also didn’t restore any of the old magic to Rosario’s bat.  Rosario’s brief stint with the Mets didn’t lead to any MLB playing time, and so his overall 2024 slash line finished at a lackluster .175/.215/.316 over 319 combined PA with the Nationals and Braves.

There’s no risk for the Dodgers in taking a flier on Rosario to see if the 33-year-old has anything left after multiple inconsistent seasons.  Rosario’s chances of breaking camp with arguably the most loaded roster in baseball aren’t great on paper, yet the situation could yet change in the event of an injury, or if Rosario forces the issue with some big Cactus League numbers.  Even if he doesn’t win a spot in Los Angeles, an impressive spring might help Rosario’s chances of landing with another team if he opts out of his minors deal before the end of camp.

I’ll be the first to make the deferred joke

Is 99% of the deal deferred if he makes the roster?

No, it’s simple. Dodgers’ annual budget does not “roll over”, and what they do not spend, they lose the following year. Guggenheim directed Friedman to obtain either an office chair, a copier, or Eddie Rosario.

The dodgers just signed the dodgers killer! He’s one of the sole reasons the braves beat the dodgers in 2021 to advance to the world series, which also left rosario with an nlcs mvp in his trophy case!

“Who no one wanted”..Today, they’re signing Eddie Rosario and tomorrow they’re invading Europe and taking over the free world.

It’s a slippery slope that we do not want to reach. Why do so many people not see this? The Dodgers are a clear and present danger to world stability.

“All the open spots the Dodgers have”…Haven’t you heard?..The commish reasoned that the Dodger’s Ohtani is a two-way player, so he granted the Dodgers 5 additional roster spots.

Every other team will open the season with a 40 man roster while the Dodgers will open the season with a 45 man roster.

“No, we don’t, but imagine how hilarious it would be to just keep signing people and have a secondary team in the minors that could still hold their own in the majors”

“But sir… the money… the salary tax”

“Oh don’t worry about that, the commissioner already came out and said he thinks we are great for baseball. Also the salary tax penalties are a joke, not a factor at all.”

The salary tax penalties are STEEP! They’re paying a 110% tax for every dollar over $301M.

Yeah but the problem is the salary tax only affects the teams that don’t care how much they spend… thus why it’s a horrible competitive balance strategy.

Curious why they would want him and why he would want to sign there unless they see him as sort of a player coach in the minor leagues and he’s looking at that as a stepping stone or transition in his career. The path to the show is near impossible for him and their minors are stacked, I can’t imagine why they would let him eat up playing time instead of a player who could develop.

Smart move on Rosario’s part. Nobody has wanted him since August of last year so he signs a minor league deal with a club he knows he isn’t making out of spring training. Injuries happen to every team so all it takes is him getting called up one time and getting one at bat and then he gets another World Series ring.

Eddie Rosario is an avid MLB trade rumors reader and 80% of you on here have acted like the Dodgers have already won the World Series in 2025 so you can’t blame Rosario for wanting another ring.
