April 21: Arraez is in concussion protocol and will go on the 7-day concussion IL, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Infielder Mason McCoy will be recalled as the corresponding move, per Acee.
April 20, 10:11PM: In what appears to be great news, Arraez returned to the Padres clubhouse postgame and was happily chatting with teammates, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Arraez will stay in Houston overnight for observation, but could rejoin the team in Detroit as early as tomorrow.
7:23PM: During an in-game interview with ESPN’s Buster Olney, Padres manager Mike Shildt said initial concerns were about Arraez’s neck and jaw. For the latter, Shildt said Arraez “has a little bit of a cut on the jaw, [we’re] worried about the jaw, stability of that.” (Hat tip to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome)
6:53PM: Padres designated hitter Luis Arraez suffered an apparent head or neck injury after a big collision with Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon in tonight’s game. Arraez was thrown out at first base while trying to bunt for a base hit, and ran headfirst into Dubon’s shoulder while the second baseman was covering the bag. Arraez was down on the field and almost motionless for several minutes, and had to be carted off once his head and neck area was stabilized by a brace. He was conscious, and gave a thumbs up while being removed from the field.
The Padres provided an update on their X account, saying that Arraez was “currently stable, conscious, responsive, and able to move his extremities.” The infielder is receiving further examination and treatment at a Houston hospital.
We’ll undoubtedly get more updates over the course of the evening, but at the very least, it seems like Arraez is heading to the injured list (either the normal 10-day IL or the seven-day IL for concussion-related issues). Given how scary the incident looked, one can only hope that Arraez avoided any kind of serious injury to his neck or head that would impact his day-to-day-life, to say nothing of his baseball career.
Arraez entered tonight’s action hitting a solid .287/.330/.425 over his first 95 plate appearances of the 2025 season, again acting as San Diego’s everyday first baseman. The extreme contact hitter has been baseball’s toughest batter to strike out essentially since he made his MLB debut with the Twins in 2019, though Arraez’s contact rarely translates into any sort of power. The old-school approach has undoubtedly been productive, as Arraez is the only player in the history of the sport to win three straight batting titles with three different teams — he won the AL batting crown with the Twins in 2022, with the Marlins in 2023, and then mostly with the Padres in 2024 after Miami dealt him to San Diego 33 games into last season.
This throwback nature has made Arraez a fan favorite, and his contributions both on the field and within the Padres’ clubhouse were viewed as a catalyst for San Diego’s success in 2024. Since Arraez will surely have to miss some time in the wake of tonight’s collision, he’ll represent yet another key Padres player on the injured list. The Friars are already trying to get by without Yu Darvish, Jackson Merrill, Jake Cronenworth, and others, yet San Diego still took a league-best 15-6 record into tonight’s game in Houston.
I am not a fan of the Padres at all, but I don’t want to see that happen to ANY player. I hope he can get back on the field for me to boo as soon as possible.
They are far worst teams to not like at all.
Yankees, angels, giants, dodgers, Rockies, mariners, bosox, white sox, royals, rays, os, tigers, dbags, as, jays, twins, Mets, etc and all the rest
Tell me where the padres hurt your feelings.
People are allowed to dislike whatever team they like and it only has to do with record if you’re a fair-weather fan. Plenty of people hate the Yankees, myself included.
Your feelings seem to be what is hurt, kid.
Toughen up.
None of them are worse than the Padres. Mostly because their fan base is far more arrogant than any team you mentioned. Padre fans are THE worst.
Ooooookay mojo. Phillies, Yankees and Dodger fans all say, huh?
You live in SD?
Pizza – if this was a reply to me, not any more. Late 80’s and 90’s for about 10 years. . Visit often.
So a nice guy gets knocked out cold with potential cervical damages and the first comments are about hate?
lowtalker1- How did the Mariners hurt you so bad in the low stage of your life?
Always playing close games with their closest rival, not by being isolated in the PNW.
Signed a big time FA away from your team, haha nope, that aint happening.
Beat your team in the playoffs, nope not that either.
Won game 7 of the world series against your team, not in this life time.
Always at the top of they standings, year after year, blahahhahahaha
So unless you are a Mariner fan, that can hate them for how they operate, its hard to see how you would have them on your “hate list”,
So please explain how the Mariners hurt you in your most vulnerable part of life
lowtalker1: You named 17 teams that you hate, and you’re presumably an adult.
What have any of them done to you?
Just existing is enough for lots of people these days.
LOL. Could also be a Reds fan.
You hate the (checks notes) rockies??
Wow, such a unique thread on hating certain other teams, lol Guess I have to add my 2 cents.
If I “like” or “hate” a team, it’s based upon how they play the game, and how their front office operates. Winning is important to every fan, of course, but I’ve been one of those relatively happy fan during years when the Padres had no real chance of success, because of the way the players on the field competed, and their general character overall. I like the Padres right now, because I guess I like “Cardinals” baseball. The Cards used to preach what Shildt is teaching, they played quality baseball, won a lot, and had some great, knowledgeable fans. The Padres are simply playing baseball the right way, and AJ Preller deserves huge props not just for the team of high $$ players he’s put together, but on what he’s done on a leaner budget in 2024 and now, 2025, too.
As a Padre fan, if there IS a team I dislike, it’s probably the Dodgers. And honestly, I really can’t say that’s entirely true, either. They really have a first glass baseball organization, from top to bottom. The problem I have is with the MLB front office’s favoritism of large market, and historic teams. MLB is a cartel, which needs to operate more like the rest of professional sports, i.e. with salary caps, and other features to even out revenue and competition. Teams like the Dodgers make double to triple in combined revenue, over and above that of smaller market, or newer market teams like the Padres. Money is NEVER an issue for the Dodgers. Like the Mets, they could blow past the luxury tax every year for 100 years, and never have an unprofitable team. The fact that they choose not to is, I believe, a P..R. decision. But the management is great. Their players on the field, are terrific. Their fans, basically pretty great, too. (Yep, there’s a percentage of trouble makers, which says more about L.A. than the Dodger’s fans.)
Ironically, a salary cap would make baseball work far more like a cartel than the way baseball operates now. So be careful what you wish for, and how you use words.
Also ironically, Dodgers fans know a time certainly existed in not the very far distant past when money was certainly a big problem for the team. It was a big enough issue to bankrupt it.
Good old hiflew…
Uh thanks for sharing?
@hiflew Then dont comment because it feels like fake concern
Obviously you took that comment in a way it was not intended. There was nothing fake about it. But I don’t really care what you think, so don’t bother responding.
Cared enough to respond.
But Vegas has a point.
No need to express your negative feelings about a team in regards to an individual players safety n health.
Wrong. Just because I cared enough to post a response to someone’s stupid opinion does not mean I care about said stupid opinion. It just means I want other people whose opinion I might give a damn about that might be reading that stupid opinion to get the full story. .
As far as “negative” feelings go, grow up. It can be just as much fun to root against a team as to cheer on a team Doesn’t mean I hate them or want to see actual harm befall them, I just want to see them lose. If you think that is negative, then you just join the “stupid opinion” pile to the side.
And have a nice day. See, I don’t want bad things to happen to you just because we disagree.
I hope you fail professionally but I hope you’re alright physically because I don’t hate you. I hope you stay healthy so I can continue to root for your failure.
Genuine concern right there, XD
Well I don’t particularly like hiflew myself.
Too sensitive
Short temper
Can’t take jokes very well
Is a joke
Tends to block people who upset him
Not very knowledgeable when it comes to baseball
I could go on and on but I don’t want beat a dead beat dad like hiflew
But I respect his right to his opinion on this website to freely express how he feels. However wrong his opinion is which is always
By your standard hiflew I wrote you a pretty good best man speech. You’re welcome.
One problem with that. In order for you to be the “best” man, all other men on Earth would have to be dead and buried. So you can just keep your speech to yourself.
Truth hurts I see. Well common denominator is you. Speech was amazing. Nicest but most importantly truthful thing anyone has ever said to you or about you. You’re welcome.
Wow this got dark in a hurry
@HIFLEW…I just have a question for you…do you have any specific reasons you hate the Padres?
City?
Players?
Ownership?
Ballpark?
Fans?
Other?
Just curious because I’m a baseball fall and I can honestly say that I don’t hate any team…jealous sometimes but not hate
Is this a private fight or can anyone join?
Not a fight just a question but the guy has gone MIA. I guess my question could apply to any team, fanbase and haters
Prayers for Luis and family. Didn’t look good. Looked like he took a shot to jaw from pre-Buster Douglas Mike Tyson and was out cold before he hit the ground. ESPN just had a positive report.
I hope to god it wasn’t related to the head
Taking a shot to jaw that knocks you out – head is definitely in play here.
Shildt being concerned about stability of jaw is concerning.
Almost the exact same thing happened to Alan Roden of the Jays yesterday. Rowdy Tellez had to reach for a bad throw and was right on the first base bag when Roden got there. Luckily in that case, Roden was able to shake it off, but both collisions were pretty hard. Scary stuff.
Terrible situation, but I don’t know how Luis’s contract would determine his power output, I’m guessing you meant contact. Proof reading is an awesome thing.
As awesome as proofreading? Or just proof that reading is awesome?
I think the latter
Who doesn’t like to read a good mathematical proof?
I have a theorem about that!
Rumor is Arraez got hit in his Pythagorean.
Well – he IS a contact hitter, so perhaps we should have expected something along these lines.
Glad to see that he is going to be just fine.
This is a perfect example of triangular logic.
Aloha Gwynning, hope Arraez is alright. Pesky hitter, tore in the Cubs pitching. SD needs that bat in their lineup. BTW my Cubs trying to help Padres with LA! Wild game last night. Team has issues with 3B, BP and Steele going down but they are surviving what is considered the toughest schedule in all of baseball this first month. Take care bradduh! Mahalo
As long as it’s equilateral.
Don’t be obtuse.
Ive been a big Arraez fan for the past few seasons, bummer of an injury. Its always best and most competitive when every team has their players healthy and available, the NL West has been very competitive and Arraez is certainly one of the most important components to the Padres lineup, hopefully he will be back sooner than later.
That sucks. Not even a Padres fan, but I don’t want to see that happen to anyone. Hope he recovers quickly.
Maybe they should do double bases at first like in Softball. Some traditionalists won’t like it and call it soft or hurting the anesthetics of a baseball field but people will get used to it and it can help avoiding collisions at first.
College has brought in the safety bag. It’s getting momentum.
I think it was on the table last go round. Hopefully it gains traction
Every Padres OD LHB is on the IL except Sheets. Jeez.
Sheets might get some time at First base, I had thought that he would be our first baseman on the Southside before the White Sox released him, he is a big lefty target over there, prototypical first baseman. I am a believer that the rest of the infield plays up with a big target at first, call it range factor. Sheets really proving to be invaliable to the Padres this season.
And he has been tearing the cover off the ball, even his out have been hit hard so far this year. Quite the pickup for Preller & Co. this off-season.
He’s seeming increasingly like the 1B/DH the next couple of years, depending on what happens with Arraez. I’ve been really happy with him because the organization seems to struggle to develop power hitters.
The irony of Eguy being a likely call up meaning Eguy, Gonzalez, Tirso, Wade and Iglesias are all on the team with Yuli and Heyward (although IL).
A month ago fans were outraged that the 2 old guys made the team as bench pieces at the risk of losing the others (Jose isn’t young but risk of losing a strong INF glove).
Here they are all at the top holding it together while the all stars work their way back.
I think Yuli is finally out of time once Cro or Merrill are back.
Campy is hitting again at AAA so maybe he gets a shot – getting tired of seeing Maldonado trotting 1/3 of the way to 1b.
Jose Azocar is just a DFA away.
He’s on the Mets MLB Roster right now
I’m interested to see what the Padres do with Campsano. This seems like an inflection point in his development.
Feels like AJ’s just waiting to deal Eguy and Campy. They’d be useful pieces for almost every team as part of the right deal.
I don’t think either has that much value. Rosario stayed with the club because he’s so far an AAA-type and out of options, while Campy is a C backsliding defensively in his mid-20s with a poor bat.
At least on offense, I think Campusano is on the up-and-up, but the Padres would be seemingly selling low on him without a chance to prove himself again in the bigs. I like Rosario, but his contact is headed in the wrong direction. Not to say AJ wouldn’t move on from these guys, but I can’t imagine they’d be worth a lot.
Agree. But what value does Gurriel provide?
Comedic relief?
Dubon put his elbow into Arraez face then pushed off. Not a good look for the Astros.
Out – from the angles I saw, I just think Dubon was bracing for impact. He had a clear view that he was going to collide. I wonder if Luis was focused straight ahead on the bag head down running and never even saw Dubon coming from the left.
Unfortunate outcome with 2b doing his job to cover the bag on that play (while Luis was doing his job head down running hard to beat it) but no blame from this Pad fan.
He def raised arm up but I think to brace for impact. He went straight to Luis after.
This was not like old school forearm shivs from back in the day – was it Albert Belle or Odor that was pretty famous play?
Both Belle and Odor have done it.
Lol, no, he didn’t. It was a bang bang play in which he simply braced for impact. Slowing it down to frame by frame can make it look that way, but full speed there was absolutely no intent. And I’m a die hard Padres fan…….
He lifted his elbow and pushed off after the collision. It may not have been done with the intent of injuring Araez, but he did do it.
What absolute nonsense.
Yes, what you said is absolute nonsense. Simply watching the video shows that he did lift his elbow and pushed off after the collision. That is not up for debate. All that it up for debate is whether or not it was done with malintent.
I didn’t see any ill intent, maybe just poor footwork on Dubon’s part, but no malice. It happens. Snell broke Harper’s hand 3 years ago.. part of the risk.
I’m kind of with you on this. There are very few plays where the second baseman covers first on a play where the first baseman has fielded the ball. It just happened. Unfortunately
Dubon absolutely did not do anything on purpose. He had just enough time to see Arraez and braced for the inevitable contact.
Nah. I happened to be watching that game. Dubon was running to cover first as he was fielding the throw. They both got to the bag at the same time at full throttle. Either one or both of them could have been injured in that play; it just happened Arraez who got the worst of it. Dubon stayed with him on the field until the trainers came out. You could see how badly he felt. Fortunately, it sounds like Arraez is going to be okay. For as long as he was down, it really looked like a major injury.
Fully agree, that’s a scary play for a 2B to make as well, and he’s running full speed, both arriving at the bag at the same time. Sounds like Arraez wanted to join the team in Detroit ( which is amazing) but the team is wisely keeping him in Houston for further observation.
Rumors are out that Manny may have fractured his toe. These daily injuries are getting old.
He fouled two pitches into his foot in the one AB, leading to more time-outs. It was a very strange inning. Not sure what can be done about these types of injuries. Batters are already padded out almost like football players but those fouls always seem to find the unprotected places.
The irony of consecutively fouling off the same pitch on the same toe is a very small sample size of what fully symbolizes the irony of being a Padre fan all these years. As were the 4 consecutive innings ending in double play from a ball hit more than 100 mph.
It’s a long season. It’s been a long team history (1969-2025), and there’s absolutely no point in expecting normalcy at this point moving forward..
Brew – how could you fail to reference 23 innings of not scoring a run when you hold a 2-1 advantage in a best of 5 series!
@Longtimecoming
Good pitching STILL beats good hitting. Kudo’s to the Dodger’s staff. Too bad for the Padres..
And, that’s just baseball.
Shoot for context Salt.
OILF, there was no evil intent on that play. Dubon put his arm up as Arraez barreled into him. It was bad footwork by the 2B who was covering first, but it didn’t seem that he meant to injure Arraez who was focused on running out what was going to be a close play.
Not that Arraez did anything wrong, but some people would slide into first base on a play like that to avoid a collision. I always thought sliding into first base is dumb, but if people do it to avoid this kind of scenario, then I understand.
What was the call on the field? Isn’t Dubon in the wrong for crossing the bag and into the runners lane? How does the collision impact the play, if at all?
Out at first. Dubon just touched the bag before impact.
No wrongdoing, just an unfortunate awkward play. Ideally Dubon would set up on the bag like a 1B, but the play was too close for him to have time to do that.
You can’t obstruct the runner if you don’t have the ball, but that wasn’t the case here.
Dubon didn’t block the bag from Arraez and both players have a right to the base, so no wrongdoing on Dubi’s part..
I think both players having a right to the bag is the confusing part, to some extent. Since Dubon overran the bag and set himself up to collide with Arraez, wouldn’t it have been in Arraez’s best interest to attempt to level Dubon, sort of like the old school collisions at home plate. I know it’s a force out, but If the ball came loose…
Pulled groin?
I’ve played baseball, hockey and soccer up until late 30s. He must have hit just right because looking at it several times it just didn’t look to be that severe. Just my observation.
Good call for the CIL. Let him rest and get back together. I wish these would have been available in my day. Had my bells rang and saw stars several times playing football and baseball and now suffer migraines and periods of short term memory loss. Played through several concussions back in the day. Got hit helmet to helmet making a catch and played the rest of the game. I didn’t remember running three plays on the drive.
I watched the play a few times…the good news is he is okay, but Arraez basically took a Mike Tyson shot to the jaw on that collision. I knew instantly he got knocked out with how fast he was going.
Hey now, I had the Mike Tyson reference last night!
Yuli Gurriel lives to pop-up for another day. Rest up Arraez. Hopefully Connor Joe plays 1B and Gavin Sheets sees time vs LHPs; he did well against Framber yesterday.
Yup. Feels like it’s time for Shildt to drop the platoon label from sheets. He’s earned the full time job.
Joe isn’t looking confident at the plate
And not very good. But why is Gurriel still here? Talk about less than worthless.
Should never have signed him but amazing he’s still playing
Predictable, Precautionary but Necessary.
Most people I’ve spoken with do NOT understand how Dangerous Concussions Are;! They seem to think they’re just bad headaches.
But a concussion means the person’s BRAIN has been badly bruised or damaged in the process of the brain violently hitting the skull or moving violently within the person’s head.
I had two concussions in my playing days. They can cause extreme nausea & blurry vision, the latter of which is Extremely Dangerous for a hitter trying to react to a 95-105 mph fastball..
More importantly, Multiple Concussions — like many football players have suffered — can SHORTEN a PERSON’S LIFE and cause extreme personality changes that usually result in Anger-Management Issues, Deep Depression, and even Suicide.
If you think I’m exaggerating, read up on Junior Seau’s suicide. He was an all-time great football player whose suicide & emotional problems were reported to be attributable directly to the multiple concussions he received as a football player.
Here’s what was reported by Medical Experts & his Wife about Seau’s condition:
“Recently, a study from the National Institutes of Health revealed that Junior Seau, a former linebacker for the San Diego Chargers who was widely regarded as one of the NFL’s best players, had a degenerative brain disorder before he committed suicide in May 2012.
“The NIH scanned Seau’s brain, and discovered ABNORMALITIES consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disorder CAUSED BY CHRONIC BRAIN INJURY. (emphasis added)
“According to his ex-wife, Seau had displayed unusual behavior before his death, including forgetfulness, mood swings, irrationality and depression.”

It angers me to read the many moronic comments on. this page where people are arguing about which teams you should hate. This story is Too Damn Important for that sort of Inanely Stupid Commentary!
Grow up, people! Root for your team. There’s no reason to HATE any given team.
After all, the Players you supposedly Love Today could be on one of the teams you “Hate” Next Year.
So, how Dumb is it to “hate” any team? Just be happy to root for the team(s) you like.
When a guy is knocked fully unconscious due to an impact to the head, I don’t know how he could avoid the 7 day IL for concussion. Put another way, what medical practitioner or professional trainer could make any other recommendation, for legal/malpractice reasons alone. Way too many question marks about the brain, with too much knowledge of the consequences, to do otherwise.
He was never unconscious.
It doesn’t matter whether he was unconscious. A concussion is an injury to the Brain. Isn’t that serious enough?
Look at what happened to a great player like Anthony Rizzo last year when he suffered a seemingly minor concussion in a collision at first-base. The collision didn’t seem that severe, but Rizzo NEVER fully recovered from that concussion the Entire season.
Concussions are Far More Dangerous than most people realize.
As I noted in my previous comment, I had two concussions. After the second one, which happened long after the 1st one, I continued to have occasional dizzy spells for more than 4 Months.
So, never underestimate the severity of a concussion and the potential dangers posed by a concussion.
If you suspect you or someone you know has had a concussion, get medical help immediately because only a medical professional can correctly diagnosis a concussion.
I merely pointed out that he wasn’t unconscious, which appears to be a simple statement of fact that included no judgment about the seriousness of the injury. Elsewhere I said that it looked much worse when it happened than it turned out to be, just based on how long he was down. I’m not a doctor and don’t play one on the internet.
FWIW I got knocked out cold once when I was a kid, so I kind of know how it feels.
I’m kinda worried about arraez. Severe concussions can ruin players careers. Rizzo was never the same after his concussion and now is done as a player. Sometimes concussions are nothing but sometimes they affect the vision and pitch recognition which would be very bad for a player like arraez who relies on his hand eye coordination so much.
Hopefully it is only a mild concussion with no long term effects.
Has anyone checked in on Towinagain lately?
Still best record and a lot to be excited about (hoping those IL guys stert coming back in bunches) for SD fans.
Haven’t seen him much since season started.
Maybe he’s hiking from SD to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail?
I’m reading a lot about adopting the double bag from NCAA and that might be worth in the big picture but I don’t think that would have fixed this situation, given that Dubon was in motion towards the 1st base dugout and Arraez was running towards a collision with him. The only way I could imagine him not getting injured is if he slid into 1st base.
