The Orioles announced that right-hander Scott Blewett has been designated for assignment. The move opens up a 26-man roster spot for Brandon Young, whose first promotion to the majors was reported on yesterday.
Blewett was only just claimed off waivers from the Twins earlier this week, and his brief time in the orange-and-black has seen the righty throw 4 1/3 scoreless innings over two relief appearances, striking out six of 19 batters faced. Despite the impressive small sample, Blewett again finds himself in DFA limbo, likely owing to his lack of remaining minor league options.
It is a familiar story for Blewett, who has a 1.53 ERA in 29 1/3 big league innings with the Twins and Orioles over the last two seasons but is still looking to find a steady foothold for himself in the Show. His secondary metrics (such as his hard-contact rates) aren’t particularly impressive, and likely hold a greater sway for front offices than Blewett’s strong bottom-line results. Blewett also hasn’t stood out in the upper minors, posting a 6.93 ERA in 219 1/3 career innings at the Triple-A level.
Should Blewett clear waivers, he has the right to reject an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk and opt into free agency, since he has previously been outrighted in his career. One would imagine another team in need of bullpen help could have interest in claiming Blewett away from Baltimore and giving him a longer look against MLB hitters, just as the O’s plucked him off Minnesota’s roster a few days ago.
Ya Blewett (again)
Yeah 1 run in 9 innings what a bum. And that career ERA under 2. Why would anyone want that?
Speaking of bums, what were you in jail for Joel?? Pretty obvious the sudden abrupt absence and then sudden emergence. Wouldn’t expect anything less from someone such as yourself…..
Like Cowboy said, not a good name for a reliever.
Right up there with Bob Walk and Homer Bailey. (Yes, I know they were starters.)
lay – I would also include Morton, but the responses would probably be salty.
I still don’t get how a team planning to contend signed him. Could have done so much better at bargain prices with guys like Pivetta. Oh well.
He had his chance, but…You know…
He looked good. I would’ve sent Perez packing but Elias loves that guy.
Definitely seems odd. I didn’t like him choosing Perez over Coulombe or even a righty like Webb in the offseason. Blewett probably isn’t a long term answer but Perez seems like he’s been cooked for a couple years.
Insert obvious puns here: ________
This was probably the plan all along. Claim him on waivers and then hope he can clear waivers when you put him on there. If he gets claimed thanks for the memories ( all 2 appearances). If he clears hope he accepts an outright to Norfolk. Sure he can reject it but since nobody claimed him doubtful he would get a major league deal. Since the Orioles have a day off Monday I would have optioned Povich and skip his next start which would be next Saturday. Kyle Gibson should be ready then. But the move isn’t surprising
We can’t put our hope on Gibson, we may lose 100 games!
Doesn’t the waiver claim process operate in the same order as the draft? If so and he fell all the way to the Oriole’s, doesn’t that mean 90% or more of the clubs already passed on him?
Order of current standings.
Seems like there are a handful of relievers in MLB that are just traveling Carnies and are in contention to see who can play for the most teams in one season. Jesse Chavez broke out into an early lead but bogged down in the Braves minor leagues, then came along Adam Ottavino and now Scott Blewett. Chavez and the Braves seem to be destined for a retirement weekend tour at the end of the season whether on or off the team. Meanwhile, which team will take a chance on Bartolo Colon?
He’ll find work somewhere else pretty quick. In the meantime, prolly would help to change that last name….
Cubs?
The Orioles will hope to sneak him through waivers and stash him in AAA.
Meanwhile, Cionel Perez somehow manages to not only hold onto a spot despite having just one great season 3 years ago but he keeps getting used. He was bad enough last year but terrible this year.
Moral of the story? If you’re going to pitch? Be lefthanded, I guess.
I cringe when Cionel takes the mound. Blewett was pitching mop up but his stuff looked good to me. I certainly wouldn’t have sent him packing but I guess covering innings for Povich’s terrible start last night did him in.
Yankees
Blewett will probably land on another team. Just like Richard Lovelady, I presume some MLB front offices are signing these guys for their names at this point.
Scott Mopup, come on down.
Bring back Blewett waive Morton …
Seriously though signing a 41 year old is risky – might need to just admit it was a mistake and move on. Problem is with 7 starters on IL there’s really nothing they can do at this point
Morton makes too much for them to punt this early. But you seriously need to consider making him the long man or starting the game with an opener. You can’t let him start unless he figures something out. This is horrendous.
His weak secondary metrics might be costing him a stable role.
