Pirates Option David Bednar

By Darragh McDonald | April 1, 2025 at 3:50pm CDT

The Pirates announced that they have optioned right-hander David Bednar to Triple-A Indianapolis and designated catcher Jason Delay for assignment. Those are the corresponding moves to add pitching prospect Thomas Harrington, a move which was reported earlier today.

The move highlights what a recent struggle it’s been for Bednar, who was once one of the most dominant closers in the league. From 2021 to 2023, he made 172 appearances for the Pirates. He had a 2.25 earned run average, 31.2% strikeout rate and 7.7% walk rate. He gradually took over the ninth inning in Pittsburgh in that time, with three saves in 2021, 19 the year after and then 39 in 2023.

That production would have been exciting for any club but it was enhanced by the “local kid makes good” angle. Bednar was born in Pittsburgh, went to Mars Area High School and attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was drafted by the Padres but made his way to his hometown club in January of 2021, just before his breakout, as part of the three-team trade that sent Joe Musgrove to San Diego.

But he’s been on a downward slide since then. He posted a 5.77 ERA for the Bucs last year. His strikeout rate fell to 22.1% and his walk rate climbed to 10.7%. He lost the closer’s role for the final month of the season.

His first three appearances in 2025 have gone poorly. On Opening Day against the Marlins, he was put into the bottom of the 9th in a 4-4 game. He allowed a triple, issued an intentional walk and then allowed a walk-off single. He got another chance the next day, getting the ninth with the Bucs up 4-1. A walk and a homer quickly made it 4-3, though Bednar then got three outs to record the save. On Sunday, he was again put into tie game in the ninth. A single, stolen base, throwing error and wild pitch quickly led to another loss.

It’s a frustrating mystery for Bednar and the Pirates, as his stuff doesn’t seem to have lost any zip. He averaged 96.6 miles per hour on his fastball in 2023 with opponents batting .188 and slugging .315 against it. Last year, his velo actually ticked up to 97.2 mph but the pitch allowed a .256 batting average and .459 slug. His splitter and curve didn’t seem to lose any velo either.

Bednar and the team have presumably been trying to find an explanation for his struggles without coming up with a clear solution, so the Bucs have taken the step of sending him to Indianapolis, perhaps with the idea of him having a chance to get into a good groove away from the pressures of the big leagues. In Bednar’s stead, the closing duties will perhaps fall to someone like Colin Holderman or Dennis Santana.

The move isn’t likely to impact Bednar’s trajectory to free agency. He came into this season with his service clock at four years and 76 days. That’s 96 days shy of the five-year mark and he’s already added five more days this year. That means he needs about three more months in the majors to get over that line. Assuming he gets beyond five years at some point here in 2025, he would have just one season of club control remaining.

If he stays down for longer than that, the Bucs could theoretically gain another year. But in that scenario, he likely didn’t pitch well in the minors, meaning they probably wouldn’t tender him an arbitration contract since he is making $5.9MM this year. The arbitration system is set up so that salaries almost never go down, even with poor performance.

It will surely lead to plenty of “what-if” questions. The Bucs haven’t been competitive for most of the recent past, so Bednar’s name came in a trade rumors from time to time. The Pirates never clicked on any deal. In hindsight, plenty will say that they should have taken whatever offers were on the table, but it’s hard to fathom anyone foreseeing this quick downfall.

Delay, 30, has seen a decent amount of time as Pittsburgh’s backup catcher in recent years. From 2022 to 2024, he hit .231/.295/.315 in 134 games with solid glovework. However, the catching depth for the club has become more crowded. Endy Rodríguez missed all of 2024 recovering from UCL surgery but is now back. While he was gone, the club took a flier on Joey Bart and saw him break out. Between those two and former first overall pick Henry Davis, Delay was likely fourth on the depth chart.

The Bucs will now have a maximum of one week of DFA limbo to figure out what’s next. The waiver process takes 48 hours so any trade possibilities would have to come together in the next five days. Delay still has options and hasn’t yet reached arbitration, so he could be an affordable depth addition for a club looking to bolster its catching corps.

Still, it’s a reminder to trade dominant closers when not in contention, which was the case a couple years back.

He’s a local kid. Pirates fans never forgave Huntington for trading Neil Walker. Hometown means a lot here
That said, from a baseball perspective I agree with you. But here, it’s PR, trying to sell fans on bad teams.
I feel badly for Bednar. But that’s the business

I find it hard to believe people are going to games to see Bednar. Attendance since Bednar has been here is downright pathetic.

You miss the point. It’s not that they’re going to see Bednar in particular. They just appreciate the appearance of a franchise looking out for its own local stars. Not hard to comprehend in Pittsburgh

I’ve had lots of Pittsburgh friends say similar. I admire the civic pride, but it’s definitely tough to swallow not selling a top flight club closer and having his value go to zero for the second time in recent memory.

Pittsburgh fans aren’t anything special. Just like any other fans. This time last year Rowdy had to scold you for booing Bednar. Now you are celebrating him getting sent away. About time! He sucks and should be in minors but lets trade him for great prospects!!!!!!! It was wonderful he was a local when great. Now no one is demanding this is bs. He’s a gritty yinzer. Gotta keep the local kid as closer. He’s a Pittsburgher. He’ll figure it out.

It is very easy to say let’s trade the guy when he is good. But the development system for non pitchers is so bad that they would have to get two or three good near ready ML players to make it worthwhile.
Cherington wants to win as much as anybody and trading stars, especially a closer, when you do not have a backup, only serves to push back any “rebuild” forever.
Huntington had it right. He would trade guys near their 6th or 7th year if he could not extend them and he would get near ready ML players as he probably knew that he was not developing anyone either.
Pirate fans did not mind the rebuild starting in 2020 but expected to at least see a winning team within 3-4 years.Trading your young good stars would not accomplish that objective.
If this year goes from bad to worse then it may be a good thing in that even Nutting may realize that he needs someone else to begin yet another rebuild.

Closers ain’t stars. If losing a guy who pitches 2 or innings a week pushes back a rebuild it ain’t going to be a successful rebuild.

if Cherington really wanted to win as much as anyone, he wouldn’t have signed Pham and would have fired Shelton.
By the way, Shelton’s lineup is again different from last night’s game.

Fans (like myself) were upset with the Neil Walker trade because they gave him away for nothing just to be cheap. Want to be cheap and trade a local guy, fine…. just get some assets in return. Bednar will never be traded because his entrance music is the stupid Steelers song. Who cares? Terrible move to hold relievers longer than 2yrs

If you stay so. Keep going then. Theres only 5 starters but 8 relievers. So should be more star relievers. I don’t think that’s the case or you wouldn’t be naming guys who no longer play. Don’t think owners are saying let me give this reliever 300 million. He’s a star and going to sell a lot of tickets. People want to pay to see him pitch 3 innings a week. You want to crown them crown them.

DK backed it all up with in-depth research and even admitted it was hard for him to believe how it turned out. As a guy who was a small business owner for a lot of years and whose background lent itself to understanding the financial side of running a business, even several years ago you could see that Nutting was not a wealthy owner.

Now, the fact he is so hugely risk- averse is another matter..

Mark Cuban said 20 25 million a year. I think that’s a good guess. As a sports owner he should have a good idea. Not a fortune though. Pretty disappointing.

Big prize is when you sell.

You can read both reports. If you have at least average intelligence you will see which one had more research and effort put into it. Spoiler alert for you zombies it’s DK.

No one has all the data. Pirates do whatever they can to hide as much as they can. Not something a losing $ team that’s bullied for being cheap would do if they were truly losing $. Although they are incredibly stupid and not transparent. When does managements contract end? No one here knows.

They are definitely hurting though. Whether that’s losing some $ or making a smaller amount. You older guys are still paying your cable bill but half the country that was 3 or 4 years ago is no longer doing so. They lost their tv deal. Teams all over the country are crying poor. Other small markets are around 100 110 million.

I agree with Cuban. I can see them making 20 some million a year even 30 last decade. I think this decade they are making a much smaller profit. Slight profit slight loss breaking even. You can’t lose your tv deal and all that cable $ and make nearly as much. My guess Nutting hopes expects cba to fix things. If not a cap at least more revenue sharing.

Why aren’t you selling? Who wants to buy a business that loses money? That’s why he isn’t selling if he is losing $. He would be selling low. Other teams have tried recently and they didn’t get what they wanted so just kept the team.

He is probably waiting for the cba but he is so disassociated with the team and knows that it has been a loser that my guess is he will sell fairly soon especially if he can get $1.1B and his family does not want it.
Cuban probably saw the 10% annual return of investment and liked it.
If Nutting was not making $40-50M every year which is about 4-5% he would have sold it by now.

And I have no doubt an investor or group would move to buy the minute the for sale sign went up. That’s finances. Buy and put a bit of money into it. Watch it grow

I don’t care who owns them. They stink. Wrong too often. And if you think some of these owners are conservative we have a completely different definition of conservative. I don’t want conservative propaganda either. Just like the liberal outlets (owned by conservatives you say) lied about Russia and Hunter’s laptop the conservative ones lied about voting machine fraud. You 98 percent of Americans can root for your news sources like sports teams. I just want to know whats going on. Fox cnn msnbc newsmax all hot pile of garbage. Don’t care who owns them. I’ve watched Disney destroy star wars marvel etc with their woke garbage. They ain’t conservative. Ultra wealthy ain’t either. They may lean one way but roll with tide whatever way makes them more $.

I know I am talking to myself. You are brainwashed. Assuming I am conservative because I called a liberal newspaper crap.

I guess Bezos owns the post. He has donated to support same-sex marriage and lower taxes for the rich. I wouldn’t call that conservative. Those are 2 of the biggest reasons why I ain’t a cheerleader brainwashed lemming of conservative party.

Had to Google la times owner. First thing that comes up. Politics. Soon-Shiong and his family were major donors to the Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential campaign. But he claims to be a independent. I guess because he met with president you label him a conservative lol ok. I got you figured out. End of conversation zombie. I’ll stick with my independent news.

In my opinion, mental stuff. His stuff (velo and movement) have looked just as good, if not better than in previous seasons when he was an allstar. But you can tell something is off when he’s on the mound. Not as confident as before, gets frustated at himself easily it seems. Hope he can get it back on track though, because his arm is still very lively.

Yes, he went from being untouchable one year to being hit hard the next. That’ll get to a kid’s head. But you and I know scouts and hitting coaches watch pitchers—especially dominant pitchers— closely. They look for flaws in their game. Batters adjust.
I watched him closely from his best period. Didn’t throw spin pitches enough. Didn’t really have a dominant change. As batters sat on heat, it made mastering other pitches imperative. He never did. Sure it went to his head.
Again, I feel badly for the Pittsburgh guy. But you wonder what he’s been doing all this time

His curveball always had decent spin, sitting around 2400-2500 RPM. He throws a splitter instead of a change-up, and it was very effective, getting batters to swing and miss at it over 30% of the time from 2021 through 2023. Sure, his fastball was his primary pitch, but it’s not like we’re talking about a fastball-only guy here. He had 3 plus pitches, and I still believe he has 3 plus pitches, but doesn’t have the command he did before.

Do you watch games and pitchers, specifically?
His out pitch was his fastball. His set up pitch was usually a fastball out of the zone.
          He leaned heavily on heat
His spin pitches grew less and less effective
He had no legitimate off speed pitch. No change up
I mean, of course it became mental.
Batters sat on heat. And when control was less accurate, he was easy fixin’s
Sorry. He didn’t suddenly become Rick Ankiel or Steve Blass. You lose confidence when you lose mastery.

I did watch his games, I watched him become an all-star, twice, his painful blown saves last year, and his blow up games this year. I still do not think his stuff is bad as a whole. Yeah, he leaned heavily on heat, but so do most relievers. His splitter was a legitimate off-speed pitch. He could locate it well and got a ton of swings and misses in 2021-2023. Most relievers only have 1, maybe two plus offerings. Bednar had (and still has) 3. His out pitch was actually his curveball, as it had the highest put-away percentage of any of his three offerings since his 2021 rookie year. I still believe he can be a good pitcher, but he needs to regain his command, and more importantly, his confidence.

If you’re referring to his curve from his first big season here, agreed. But he became what Keller is at times: an enigma who can no longer “get the feel” for his spin pitch. The Bednar of the past two seasons relied on heat for virtually everything. And batters took note and caught up
I think he can be a good pitcher too. Do the Pirates have any true pitching coaches in their system? That’s the question

        • mlb1225

What I’m refering to is that his curveball has been his out pitch. Every year since his rookie season (including 2022, 2023, and even 2024), it had the highest put away rate between any of his three pitches. That’s also not entierly true about his fastball either though. Bednar’s four-seam fastball usage rate has mostly stayed the same since his 2021 rookie year. His lowest FB% was 53.7% in 2022 and his highest was 57.9% in 2023. Last year it was 55.5%, and in 2021, it was 55.1%. I don’t think his pitch usage is anywhere close to the problem right now. I believe the Pirates have decent pitching coaches. Dewy Robinson is a renowned pitching expert the Pirates brought into the org a few years ago, and they added Brent Strom this offseason. Again, I think his confidence needs help more than anything.

Previous statistics don’t mean squat. What a player did in the past has no revelance to this year. It’s what have you done for me lately. Bernard is either burnt, no confidence or has lost it.
And analytics, my opinion, has a lot do do with a players confidence.so yes stats are important in negotiating a new contract. It means nothing in a players performance in real time.
Now whoever had the idea to stretch out Carmen M. and make him a starter. killed be fired. When you have young starting pitching in abundance, you don’t need to convert a possible replacement for bednar.
He pitched 3 quality innings in his start, a good showing by a relief pitcher. But not as a starter.
And Sheldon’s lineups are ridiculous. These guys need to play everyday at the start of the season. After all they don’t play much in spring. To alter his lineup like he does is a reason why this MORON should be sent packing.

Any pro coach can see Bednar needs the Roger Beshens Football Slider. It’s not hard for a hitter to understand Bednars tendencies which are throw high fastballs and breaking balls away. That formula got a lot of pitching coaches fired, probably 5 times for some. If a pitcher throws a traditional SL or CU away it’s not near as good as the Roger Beshens Football slider.

Wow, shocked they made this decision so quickly, but it was 100% needed. Atp with Bednar, it’s a mental thing, because his stuff looks just as good as it ever did. But he’s either missing way out of the zone, or leaving it in very hittable places when he hits the zone. He looks defeated on the mound, and he needs to get his confidence and command back. Jason Delay getting DFA’d isn’t entierly surprising. He’s a proto-typical back-up catcher and was the 4th on the 40-man roster.

I’m just happy they didn’t sit on their hands until it was too late like they did last year. Even though I thought Bednar would out of the role sooner rather than later, I was still 100% prepared for them to let him attempt (and likely fail) to save most games until May.

If you ask me, they should keep Harrington in the Majors, move Mlodzinski back to the bullpen, and let Santana, Mlodzinski, and Borucki handle the late/high-leverage innings. Play it by match-up/whoever is avaiable, and work from there. If one of them steps up their game, then you can set someone in a more typical closer role.

This guy wasn’t in great shake unless that shape was round. Didn’t throw elite hard. Didn’t have elite slider or any slider. He didn’t have much of a chance. Probably had a longer stretch than he should. I been telling them to trade him for years. Maybe they didn’t get a good offer but I think they set their ask unrealistically high. Remember reports pirates wanted a Juan Soto return for Reynolds.

one important aspect of the need for a closer is scoring enough runs to get a good pitcher into the 9th to save the win.
        This team doesn’t do that.
So it might not matter who the closer is from game to game

No one is discussing Sheltons role in what looks like another putrid team. How, with 16 pitchers on the roster, do you put Bednar in a close game because they’re all used up after 2 games. He needs to go badly enough that I’m kinda hoping for a 10-15 game losing streak. Skenes will likely have a 0-0 record with 20 indecisions.

D-Bednar has obviously not pitched well but it was not his fault that Cruz cannot play CF or Endy cannot throw to second base.
When a team is that careless it only emphasizes the point that there has been no significant improvement in the haphazard play that has occurred since Shelton took over.
I’m kinda hoping that Nutting gets off his seat and actually does something for the good of the team that he owns.Namely, fire Shelton now.

Nutting would have to pay Shelton for the whole season.
Shelton should have been fired two years ago.
If Cherington knew what he was doing he would have been.
The problem as I have said several times before is that Nutting is not invested enough in baseball and whether his team is winning.Cherington will not act because it reflects on him.
This team really cannot be taken seriously because the overall management is so bad.

This was a good personnel move.
If he has gained significant weight shame on him.
They should have signed Robertson at least.Teams always need two guys who can close.
Holderman cannot close.Does not have the fortitude. He should really be the 7th inning and no later.
I doubt that Santana has it either, but he deserves a chance.
They need to put Carmen in the pen which is probably why Harrington was added to be the fifth starter.
I think that Borucki or Ferguson may be able to close even if they are lefthanders.
I always liked Delay but he cannot really hit enough to be a long term backup on a good team.
Of course the Pirates are not a good team.
Their outfield defense is bad.Infield pretty decent.Mistakes occur often though.
I hope that Bednar makes it back and pitches well but even if he does he evidently has only one year of control left which means that he would be either traded or extended.

If Bednar wasn’t local to Pittsburgh suburb he would have been traded in his “prime”. There was zero reason keeping him on a team going nowhere. The pirates were afraid of backlash if he was dealt but seriously why should they care. They traded Neil Walker and life went on. He is toast and will prob be released or traded. And Endy Rodriguez is nothing special. Somehow people (pirates fans) think he is the future of the pirates catching. Why not try Henry Davis all season??? You don’t have the number 1 draft pick as your third string catcher at this point. If so, then trade Davis. But they won’t. The pirates won’t want to admit he was a bad pick if he stinks so bad, but at the same time they are admitting he was a bad pick considering he is in the minors.

Here’s an alternative. Your team is sucking and has lost four straight. Do you start your best pitcher in an attempt to break the skid or do you play fan favorite, throw a bullpen game (probably lose the game with their bullpen, now five straight). and save your best starter for the Yankees, where he has less chance of winning? First option is about giving the team a possible morale boost and trying to win while the second is less about winning and more about placating the fans in the short run.

I expected such a response and from a baseball perspective, it’s the right call Any manager worth his salt would go this route
But with the Pirates, there are some caveats that fans are made to endure. Your franchise did nothing this off season. It provided sound bites but no offensive help. Your manager seems to have no consistent lineup. How many changes have we had so far? Isn’t the spring training season conducted to make determinations as to who starts and who sits?
You sent hometown kid Bednar down. Granted, it was deserved
Skeptical, you’re 100% right. In the end though, I suspect Dream’s rationale was the driving factor

How many more times will they link the wrong Tom Harrington? You think there would be at least some sort of quality check on that.

Puzzles me that IKF has the hottest bat currently for the Pirates, but Shelton keeps batting him ninth.

Good to see that at least the Pirates are running this year

      Agreed
And with your alternate idea (above) in mind, again, is there any real immediacy with this franchise… where winning is concerned?

IKF doesn’t walk enough or hit for enough power to bat leadoff. Neither does Pham Suwinski Frazier. I’d rather see IKF there.

ironically, IKF has walked more this year than he did last year after being traded to the Pirates

Trying to rationalize Shelton’s daily lineups are indeed puzzling.
He’s used 3 different players batting lead off so far.
      Frazier, Pham and Jack
In yesterday’s game, Pham batted 4th. Historically he’s not a good run producer and has been horrible at the plate thus far this season
Cutch hasn’t been in the lineup because of an injury to Reynolds which makes no sense
These are just examples of how puzzling Shelton is when it comes to his lineups

“Cutch hasn’t been in the lineup because of an injury to Reynolds which makes no sense”

Reynolds can’t throw. Cutch can’t hold up playing outfield. Only 1 person can DH.

Reynolds injury prevents him from throwing without pain and being the DH he doesn’t need to throw
          Common sense

Fans love to complain about lineup. Cherington Williams Nutting appreciate this. BLAME SHELTON

League average is around 700 ops. Pirates have 3 guys above 600. That’s 6 guys giving you Nutting. Doesn’t matter what Shelton does. There’s never been a manager that walked this planet that could do anything with this lineup. Although playing Reynolds at DH over Cutch makes it 7 Nutting spots in lineup instead of 6.

Astros owner Jim Crane said there has “got to be some adjustment there” as conversation about a potential MLB salary cap circulates, adding there is “a deal to do that’s good for the players and good for the owners,” according to Matt Kawahara of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. Crane said, “With some of the teams that are out there spending the kind of money … some of the teams don’t have the revenue sources. We’re fortunate we’re probably top five or six, we can compete.” When asked if he is in favor of a salary cap, Crane said, “It depends how it works. … Nothing’s really been presented to us to vote on or anything like that. So I think baseball’s working on it and hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement and get it to where it’s more competitive for some of the smaller market teams. Quite frankly, if I was in some of those markets and had those revenue streams, I don’t know if I’d be in baseball, because it makes it difficult to win and we’re here to win”

Yankees sound more like some of you guys.

Yankees team president Randy Levine gave voice to such angst in October of 2023 when he said:

“A lot more focus has to be on individual teams to do better and not just rely on revenue sharing. You can’t have two Florida teams averaging 15,000 fans. You can’t have it. You don’t go into an NFL stadium or an NBA arena and see that.

“And I think that there’s been a dependency issue that’s got to get better. … The commissioner has done an incredible job, but now it’s on individual teams. Instead of complaining and whining, ‘We need more money,’ You got to take some responsibility

Over the past three offseasons, the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees have spent more on free agents than the teams that ranked ninth through 30th combined.

One thing I think all Pirate fans can agree on is that the Pirates offense is terrible. Their collective batting average is .197 so as a team they are below the Mendoza line. More depressing for baseball in general is that there are six teams with lower batting averages and that the Pirates are .046 above the Braves in team batting average. Sad state of affairs for MLB.

for the 5th time in 8 games this year, Shelton has written another different lineup
Hayes is batting lead off and Cutch is playing in ring field

Another different lineup for this afternoon’s game, with Frazier again batting lead off, Endy catching, Valdez playing first base, Canario playing in right field, Jack in left and Reynolds as DH
The only player to not strike out in yesterday’s game and also collected 3 hits is sitting on the bench ( Cutch)
I predict another loss and double digit strikeouts

Jack did what he does best in his first plate appearance
Struck out swinging on a pitch no where close to the plate. That makes 8 strikeouts in 9 of his last plate appearances
How long before he gets sent back to Indy and maybe take Endy with him when Horowitz finally returns
    This offense stinks

3 hits in 5 innings so far
Canario struck out with the bases loaded and on a pitch right down the middle of the plate
It was a perfect pitch to hit and he couldn’t make contact
How long will he stick around?
