Poll: Kyle Tucker’s Earning Power

By Nick Deeds | April 10, 2025 at 11:59pm CDT

The biggest news from the baseball world of late is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s $500MM extension with the Blue Jays, which will keep him in Toronto through the end of the 2039 season. Guerrero and Kyle Tucker were widely viewed as the top free agents of the coming offseason. Now that Guerrero is off the board, the top of the mountain belongs to Tucker, the superstar outfielder who the Cubs gave up a massive package (All-Star infielder Isaac Paredes, young starter Hayden Wesneski, and first-rounder Cam Smith) to acquire ahead of his final year of team control.

Tucker’s certainly validated that belief in him as an impact player during the early going this season. A career .276/.356/.520 hitter, he’s taken his game to an even higher level recently. Tucker emerged as an early-season MVP candidate last year before being limited to just 78 games by a fractured shin, but even in his last 250 games dating back to 2023, the 28-year-old is hitting .288/.387/.548 with a wRC+ of 157. That’s the fifth-highest figure among all hitters with at least 1,000 plate appearances during that time, trailing only Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, and former teammate Yordan Alvarez.

That lofty company, combined with the huge expectations created by $700MM+ deals for the top-rated free agent in back-to-back offseasons, created plenty of intrigue about where Guerrero’s contract could end up prior to his extension with the Jays. His $500MM deal falls short of that $700MM mark both Ohtani and Soto reached, although Ohtani’s deal includes massive amounts of deferred money that make it lower than Guerrero’s pact in terms of net present value. Questions remain, however, about how Tucker’s own eventual deal will compare to those names. Notably, Tucker doesn’t have the sort of standout carrying tool that other top stars have. He’s not a threat to hit 60 homers like Judge, lacks Soto’s otherworldly strike zone recognition, and certainly isn’t the sort of once-in-a-century athlete Ohtani has proved himself to be.

With all that being said, however, Tucker gets to that elite tier of production by being well above average at just about everything. Among hitters with at least 1000 plate appearances over the past three seasons, Tucker’s barrel rate (11.7%) is top-30 in the majors, and his isolated slugging percentage is seventh best. He combined that excellent power with similarly excellent plate discipline; his 14.1% strikeout rate is the eleventh-lowest, while his 13.8% walk rate is fourth behind Judge, Soto, and Kyle Schwarber. While Soto remains the only player to walk more often than he strikes out, the 0.3% difference between Tucker’s strikeout and walk rates is the smallest among the rest of the league.

Tucker’s talent in the batters’ box is further augmented by strong work in other areas of the game. He’s a well-regarded defender in right field who won the AL’s Gold Glove award at the position in 2019, and while he’s not shown an ability to play a premium position like center field, it seems unlikely that he’ll need to make a move down the defensive spectrum to DH or first base any time soon. He’s also proved to be a solid contributor on the bases. Despite middling foot speed, Tucker has managed to log 91 steals in 102 attempts since the start of the 2020 season. That’s good for a phenomenal 89.2% success rate, and includes 25- and 30-steal efforts during the 2022 and ’23 campaigns. Tucker was well on his way to another 20+ steal season in 2024 before being sidelined by injury, and with three bags swiped in just 15 games this year it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him steal more than his fair share of extra bases this season as well.

Given Tucker’s all-around impressive skill set, it’s not hard to see why teams will be clamoring to bring him into the fold this winter. There’s even a fairly strong argument to be made that Tucker is a more valuable player than Guerrero, given that their career numbers are relatively similar at the dish and Tucker is a far more valuable player in the field and on the basepaths. With that being said, Tucker’s age could hold him back somewhat relative to the deals landed by Soto and Guerrero. Soto hit free agency ahead of his age-26 season, while Guerrero is currently in the midst of his own age-26 campaign. Tucker, who turned 28 in January, is two years older than Guerrero and will be marketing himself three years older than Soto was this past offseason.

It’s possible that could keep him below that half-billion dollar threshold that only Guerrero and Soto have managed to reach by measure of net present value, but he could still be in for a massive payday. After all, Judge landed $360MM over nine years in free agency when marketing his age-31 season, while Ohtani was roughly the same age as Tucker when he landed his contract, which has a net present value of just under $461MM for luxury tax purposes. Marquee Sports Network’s Lance Brozdowski reported on his Cubs Daily Podcast earlier this week that a person from Tucker’s agency, Excel Sports Management, suggested an estimate of $475MM over ten years for Tucker’s eventual contract. That figure obviously comes with caveats aplenty given that the source is Tucker’s own agency and he’s just 15 games into his platform season, but that number would top both Judge and Ohtani’s contracts in terms of NPV.

How do MLBTR readers believe Tucker’s contract situation will play out? Will he be able to crack the $500MM threshold that only Soto and Guerrero have crossed so far? Have your say in the poll below:

How Much Will Kyle Tucker Sign For By NPV?
More than $400MM, but lower than Ohtani's $461MM net present value. 43.02% (4,151 votes)
Less than $400MM 24.43% (2,357 votes)
$500MM or more 18.22% (1,758 votes)
Higher than Ohtani's $461MM net present value, but less than $500MM 14.33% (1,383 votes)

Untrue. DeGrom is highly effective when available- as rare as that may be since he started throwing 99mph.

When Rendon and his negative WAR is healthy enough to play, I’m sure Angel fans are looking closely for the relief within his next DL calling grimace.

Thats the thing when available. Since Jacob degrom signed his 180M+ contract with the rangers (and yes i know its not the best comparison), His WAR has been the equivalent of Tylor Megill and roughly have that of Griffin Canning to date.

These guys are role players helping the team by absorbing innings and reducing overall workload at a fraction of the price and in Megill’s case he has roughly earned in that entire time frame the cost of degrom throwing 1 inning.

Also im willing to bet that rendon had a much relatively lower insurance on his contract but with degrom being older and coming off multiple injuries that insurance was either a lot higher if there at all. So rendons salary out of the angels pockets was probably much lower than degroms with them off the IL.

The money teams paid Soto & Vald only to stop them from signing with the Yankees is hilarious. I don’t think the Mets or Jays can sign anyone of merit, ever again lmao the jays are not even a small market team, they are in Canada lmao they are a no market team. The entire junk country has a population of Texas hahahahhaha and they have no market. I predict Dante among others signing with big market teams. Dare I say- Dante to NYY? If the NYY can find their checkbook lol they’ve been paying with change.

          Career 155 OPS+ (161 OPS+ through age 26)

I am thinking $36 million per year for 12 years. Nothing deferred. No trade clause for years 1-11. Opt-out available after four years and eleven years.

If Cubs believe in Caissie, Alcantara and Ballesteros as their corner OFs and DH, I could see Cubs spending the money elsewhere or not at all. But realistically one out of Caissie and Alcantara will be a solid starter and one will be a bust. Hope they extend Tucker but don’t expect it.

Doubt he will be extended. They will probably offer 10/400. Never saw them give deferred money but who knows. As usual the offer will be the third or fourth highest.

You regularly bash players for their contracts and you did once say that you hated how athletes are making so much “to play a game”. You’re a really salty communist at this point, I’m not surprised to see you judge Soto’s contract based on the first year. On January 1, 1962, four young men—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best—auditioned for a record deal at Decca Records in North London. They played 15 songs, vying for a break after two years of struggling in local clubs and pubs.

Decca was polite, but rejected the band. “Guitar groups are on the way out,” they commented. “The Beatles have no future in show business.”

This turned out to be one of the worst mistakes in the history of the music industry.

The Decca people weren’t idiots; they knew the music biz. But they were human. And we humans, it turns out, are bad at recognizing genius.

Says psychologist David Dunning in a recent interview with Smart Planet,

We cannot recognize the best among us, because we simply do not have the competency to be able to recognize how competent those people are.”

Isnt Corbin Burnes a Boras client and took a lesser contract with AZ and a whole host of players 2 offseasons ago had to take way less including Blake Snell. Same probably could be said of Alonso based on what his expectations were. Bogaerts extension with the redsox before opting out was pretty team friendly as well.

“Tucker is easily”…Actually, I think the Juan Soto and Vlad G. situations are special, isolated cases that will not soon be repeated. I don’t see many teams wanting to invest $500M+ in a single player. Especially after the Kris Bryant/Anthony Rendon fiasco.

Soto found the perfect storm of two NY teams desperate and bidding against each other. And Vlad Guerrero Jr. found himself on a Toronto team that was uber desperate to keep somebody, anybody really. I otherwise agree with everything you’ve said.

Agree that Tucker is the better all-around player. But the reason he won’t get more than Vlad, Jr. has nothing to do with on-field skills. It’s marketing, and Vlad is a more recognizable name to casual and international fans. Vlad will return more in merchandize sales.

Will Tucker become a dodger or a met or even a yankee? My guess is 10 years 525 mil (deferred) to the dodgers because the Mets wouldn’t feel comfortable with Soto in left field and the Yankees will easily get outbid

There’s no way ricketts shells out a megadeal (he wouldn’t even extend Kris Bryant) and the braves and Phillies would need to trade some contracts to make it happen

He was right not to extend Bryant. I’m not a huge fan of Ricketts but he was right in that one instance.

They were 100 percent right. Cubs knew Bryant had an arthritic shoulder and a bum back. At the time I felt he wasn’t worth a risk of more than 18m a season for 5 season. Was blown away when he got double of that. Rockies should ask the doctor that gave the physical how much Boras paid him.

11/450 with opt out after year 4 which means he can be a FA again after his age 32 season.

$40.9 million AAV before deferrals that bring the NPV down to around $36 million per year.

This actually looks like it’s lining up for the Phillies. They have several expiring contracts that will free up alot of money. They’ll sign a high priced superstar outfielder. Just not sure if it’s Tucker or Trout.

Aloha folks, sadly I don’t see the Cubs going anywhere near what Tucker is looking for. If it’s true that someone inside his agency said 10yrs/$475mil I bet the FO tries to offer 8/$320 possibly 10/$400mil. After Vlad Jr came off the table, Tucker is the number one bat and glove going into this off season. I think Tucker should go into the FA market and let get the best deal he can. No discounts to stay in Chicago, especially with the season he’s currently having. Mahalo

$43M AAV sounds right, between Judge and Ohtani. So probably 10/430, slightly front-loaded. Opt-outs after 4 and 7 years, maybe with an override for the signing team at the 4th year to add an 11th year.

Would love to see the Nationals come out of nowhere and sign him. They have a good young team for awhile cheaply and could make a move to start contending and theyve handed out the big contracts before.

Dude took off over 6 weeks in a playoff run for a bone bruise. Unprecedented in any sport. Has a long swing that won’t age well. Loved him in Houston but his next contract won’t likely end well. Missing his RBI production this year but time will prove Crane right on this move.

Are you aware the Astros misdiagnosed his “bone bruise” and that is was actually a fracture?

I don’t think he’s signing a 10 year deal. With the salary estimates, teams aren’t going to like taking a $45M to $47.5M AAV tax hit. He’ll get more than $430M. I see $450M-$475M spread out over at least 12 years. If he does get $500M there’ll at least another year, and maybe two, added on to that.

A 12 year 500MM deal is 41.67MM AAV. I don’t think that’s unreasonable given what some players recently got.

I agree, it’s not unreasonable. It’s a more palatable tax hit for teams than a 10/$450M would be. 12/$500M wouldn’t surprise me, but neither would an extra year, lowering the AAV to $38.46M. But my point was, no matter what the dollar figure is, IMO it won’t be 10 years, but something longer.

The absolute max years I’d offer Kyle %ucker is 11 years. And that’s even going past my previous statements about the years. Where I said 10 years max. I think the Cubs finally grow a pair and try to extend him before free agency. I don’t think they’ll even compete with the Yankees or Mets or god forbid the Dodgers throw 500mil at him. If the Cubs offer 11/430 that would be 39.09 mil aav.

Tucker isn’t signing an extension. He wants to see what the open market is offering. The only way he re-signs with the Cubs is if they make a competitive offer.

What I should have said is Tucker isn’t signing an extension, unless they completely blow him away with a huge offer. The figure I saw was $533M, which is more than than any one has been estimating. And far more than the majority of voters saying it would be more than $400M, but less than $461M.

Help be 29 going into the contract. No way he gets 14 years, 12 years is a long shot as well but I could see it for AAV purposes.

Realistically, 8 years is the most he should get, but seems everyone is signing until age 40 these days

After Vlad got $500, I can’t fathom how any one thinks Tucker won’t beat that. He’s just plain better. Better defender at a more premium position. Better hitter even. Tucker has posted 5.1 fWAR per 600 PA; Vlad has posted 2.9. Tucker is arguably almost twice the player in terms of overall value.

an interesting comp is George Springer – Astros careers VERY similar, and if Tucker keeps on trucking in 2025 pre FA career will be close to a match with Springer. Springer didn’t steal bases but otherwise, same player. Obvious differences are 2 years age diff, and 5 years of contract inflation.

Springer at FA after 2020 :
    2014-2020 24-30 HOU 27.9 795 3567 3087 567 832 137 13 174 458 48 31 396 785 .270 .361 .491 .852 131

Tucker 1 season left until FA :
    2018-2024 21-27 HOU 22.8 633 2561 2241 365 615 135 16 125 417 94 13 276 410 .274 .353 .516 .870 139

Personally I’d value Tucker over Soto. More of an all around game (SBs, defense specifically). With VG off the table, he’s bound to get paid some serious coin. I can see both NY teams along with Chicago in the hunt with SF and Boston as surprise sleepers.

So much for all that “tv money”. Once again, the Cubs will look like chumps after trading top prospects for a rental. They should have negotiated an extension immediately after the trade went down.
