As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:
1. Arraez collision aftermath:
A scary incident happened at last night’s game between the Astros and Padres, as Luis Arraez had to be carted off the field following a collision with Houston second baseman Mauricio Dubon. Arraez remained down on the field for several minutes, but the Padres thankfully announced that he was in stable condition after he was transported to a local hospital. He returned to the Padres’ clubhouse last night, and while he remained in Houston overnight for observation, it appears as though he’s avoided any severe injuries. Arraez is expected to join his teammates in Detroit for their series against the Tigers later today if he’s remained well overnight. The Padres can rely on a combination of Yuli Gurriel and Gavin Sheets at first base for any games Arraez misses.
2. Carpenter nursing hamstring issue:
Tigers slugger Kerry Carpenter exited last night’s game against the Royals due to soreness in his hamstring. Carpenter is set to be evaluated further today to determine his status, but if Carpenter is out of commission for more than a day or two that could be a major concern for his team. Manuel Margot, Parker Meadows, Matt Vierling, and Wenceel Perez are all already on the injured list, leaving the club’s outfield depth stretched significantly. Brewer Hicklen is the only player on the 40-man roster who could be called up to replace Carpenter, though Hicklen would likely serve in a bench role with Justyn-Henry Malloy getting more reps in the starting lineup. Non-roster options in Triple-A include Ben Gamel and Akil Baddoo, both of whom are hitting well.
3. Series Preview: Phillies @ Mets
The Phillies are headed to Queens for a clash between the NL East’s two best teams that’s scheduled to begin at 7:10pm local time. The only clubs with winning records in the division at the moment, Philadelphia (13-9) currently trails New York (15-7) by two games. Right-handed workhorse Aaron Nola is poised to take the mound for Philadelphia and will look to get his season on track after stumbling to a 6.65 ERA in his first four starts. Meanwhile, Mets righty Tylor Megill will look to build on his hot start (1.40 ERA). Southpaw Cristopher Sanchez (2.96 ERA) and righty Griffin Canning (3.43 ERA) are set to square off tomorrow, and the series will wrap on Wednesday with Phillies ace Zack Wheeler (3.73 ERA) and Mets southpaw David Peterson (3.27 ERA) on the mound.
Happy Patriots Day everyone!
The bars in Boston are already packed, beautiful weather in the forecast.
Let’s hope Buehler is a morning person ;O)
I would trade running 26.2 miles over drinking in a bar 367 days of the year.
hayzee – I’m a germaphobe too. For that reason I don’t go to bars very often, but when I do I drink only from bottles.
I’m just a fuddy dud party pooper.
The redsox are in trouble. Meltdown Saturday ( lucky to win)….. meltdown yesterday……. if offense doesn’t score 5+. They losing today. Book it
Sad state right now. Lot of time as its only April
Buehler mowed them down today. Trevor Story remains red hot.
Benintendi had a good day for the Southsiders. Our bullpen has pitched well this series. We got a split against Red Sox in April.
miller – Actually the White Sox lost the season series 4-3 to the Red Sox. If not for Campbell’s big hit they probably win the season series.
Best of luck to them the rest of the way, now my team has to play some good teams the next couple weeks.
Ill have to review my boxscores app, Im using Superfan Baseball Scores app, its really a great app, I have no affiliation with them, just a recommendation as a fan.
It’s great for baseball when fans are watching closely to early season inter division match ups in April. Can’t weight to see the heavy weight match ups in the NL west as well.
Mets: I don’t know the schedule, but I’m waiting for the Padres/Dodgers match-up.
Gotta wait for the Dog Days, Avenger! Late June home & away set and middle of August starts the other home & away series.
Gwynn – I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’m glad the schedulers don’t schedule the games between rivals until later in the season. It builds up the anticipation and makes the games more important and intense.
The Red Sox announcers are always complaining that the Sox and Yanks don’t meet until June. Why the rush?
It’s like when fans shouted early on at The Time concerts to play Jungle Love, Morris would always respond “Why you want us to give it up that fast? We save the best for last”..
And indeed the Sox begin playing the Yanks on June 6th, later in the season than any divisional rival.
I feel the same, Fevah! Let the pressure build and gimme those late-season rivalry games. Heck, I’m not opposed to late September either!
🙂
avenger – I’m rooting for the Padres ….. Xander and Pivetta is enough reason for me ;O)
Right on Pitch
Tigers also have Jahmai Jones right? I’d expect Gamel.
JJones currently .675 OPS @ Toledo. Badoo’s there, too with .817 OPS.
Brewer Hicklen .464 OPS (ouch); Manuel Margot (IL)
Bigbie is hitting 1.031 OPS at Erie w/4 total HRs.
Hopefully, Carpenter is just fine.
I feel the most interesting thing to happen to the Tigers yesterday was Matt Manning’s meltdown for the Mud Hens. He was pulled mid AB after 42 pitches in the 1st. I feel like this was so embarrassing for both Manning and the Tigers, he will be DFAd before his next appearance. Time to cut bait.
Yep. Won’t be long.
RE Manning – DFAd or released?
He hasn’t been the same since he took that comebacker off of his foot.
Always exciting when NYM and PHI are winning teams at same time. Has only lined up on a few occasions.
Arraez is a tough cookie that was a hell of a knock to the face he took.
He is an old school dude. I’d sure like to see what he could do on a team like my Brewers. He’s a baller!
Midway: It kind of reminded me of the collision that basically ended Rizzo’s career with the Yankees.
Got to like Arreaz getting the heck out of the hospital and back on the bench. A day off should clear the cobwebs.
Check that boy for a concussion. Took the Yankees months to discover Rizzo had one.
One of worst malpractices I’ve ever seen in BB.
1-Take a knee to the head.
2-Go from an .800 OPS to a .496.
3-Can’t remember the number of outs or the count.
Rizzo shouldn’t have been allowed to drive, let alone try to hit a 95 mph FB. And no one on the NYY thought he might have a concussion?
Arraez went on the Concussion IL, just fyi.
As scary of a collision as that was, it feels like malpractice if Arraez were to not enter the concussion protocol. Take the extra time to make sure he’s ok.
Reminds me of when Profar and CJ Abrams collided on a pop up. They tried to walk Profar off the field and he collapsed.
Also reminded me of Pham colliding with HSK and then maddogging Ha-Seong in the dugout. I liked Tommy, but not since then.
I haven’t seen a report saying he’s fine, but early reports indicate a best-case scenario with no fractures or obvious concussion. But there remain potential issues with central nervous system – cervical spine soft-tissue, or temporomandibular joint stress. The team remains concerned and didn’t let him join the team in Detroit. He’s not likely to return to the lineup immediately.
Sources, Joel. Thanks.
With Arraez’s elite contact rate and minimal strikeouts, his absence could disrupt their run production significantly.
