As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Glasnow undergoing testing:
Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow exited yesterday’s start prior to the second inning due to what the club referred to as “discomfort” in his throwing shoulder. Glasnow noted after the game that the soreness is something he’s been dealing with recently due to changes to his delivery. He was slated to undergo testing last night, so more information should be available today.
Losing a starter of Glasnow’s caliber is always difficult, but it’d be particularly frustrating for the Dodgers, given the timing. Los Angeles has been using four starters since Blake Snell landed on the IL, but with Tony Gonsolin nearing a return, they surely hoped to be back up to five starters in the near future. Glasnow hasn’t been his best self to this point in the year. He’s posted a lackluster 4.50 ERA with a 5.38 FIP, and it’s not hard to imagine a trip to the IL to rest his ailing shoulder helping him get back on track.
2. Cardinals roster move incoming:
The Cardinals are reportedly poised to select the contract of Jose Barrero today. Barrero, 27, has parts of four MLB seasons under his belt and most recently played for the Reds back in 2023. He’s struggled to hit in the majors over the years but has played quality defense both at shortstop and in center field, and it’s that strong glove that’s convinced the Cardinals to call him up for their bench mix. Thomas Saggese was optioned to the minors to make room for Barrero on the active roster, but a 40-man roster move will still be necessary to officially add him to the roster. With no obvious 60-day IL candidates currently available, the most likely avenue to open up a roster spot for Barrero would be designating a player for assignment.
3. Series Preview: Yankees @ Orioles
A series that many fans in New York and Baltimore circled as a clash between likely playoff teams is scheduled to begin at 6:35pm local time this evening, but the situation facing the Orioles as the division-leading Yankees arrive in Camden Yards is far different than most anticipated. The O’s have struggled to a 10-17 record and are coming off a sweep at the hands of the AL-best Tigers. The Yankees, meanwhile, have arguably exceeded the expectations placed on the team after losing Juan Soto to free agency and Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery. They’ve picked up nine wins in their last 13 games, propelling them to a 17-11 record overall.
The looming three-game set has far more stakes for the Orioles than it does for the Yankees. New York would surely like to pad its two-game cushion over the second-place Red Sox, but another sweep would put Baltimore ten games below .500 before the month of May even begins. The series starts with Yankees youngster Will Warren on the mound opposite longtime NPB ace Tomoyuki Sugano as both compete in their first full big league seasons. Carlos Rodon will take on a yet-to-be-determined Orioles starter in Game 2 of the series. Baltimore lefty Cade Povich is scheduled to take on Yankees veteran Carlos Carrasco in Game 3.
O’s off to a rough start
They miss burnes
Gunnar was out for a month & still finding his rhythm. Felix seems ok but not sure he’ll recapture his elite younger self, big fa signing tyler oneill injured again, grayson out for the yr possibly. Theres still alotta talent on this tm but really underwhelming results so far
I heard rumors from their front office that the cardinals would be willing to trade Steven Matz for Jackson Holliday
You can go your own way with those rumors
This year’s version of Burnes would not have helped the O’s thus far. Burnes has struggled to command his cutter. That should change soon, but he has yet to be the Corbin Burnes we know and love.
Angels: We’ve seen this before with players who sign big contracts, but Burnes might be a little too comfortable with his money and playing at home. He needs to suffer a little bit more instead of making the fans do the same.
He’s better than all the other orioles starters even with his rough start
chandler – O’Neill won’t replace Santander’s 2024 production, even with the changes in LF.
Re-signing Santander wouldn’t have replaced Santander’s 2024 production either.
Flock – Hard to say. Santander’s struggles this year could be related to adjusting to a different team, city and country.
I think he’ll turn things around, time will tell.
He’s never hitting 44 bombs again.
The Jays fell for the ol’ contract year career year.
Austin Hays is the guy we miss right now. He’s tearing the cover off the ball.
Oneill will be better but he’s an injury machine. Not fluke injuries either.
The Jays didn’t fall for anything. They needed production in their lineup. He was the second best production guy out there after Soto.
I don’t think they expect him to hit 44. They just needed a second 30+ guy to pair with Vladdy. Santander is also a notorious slow starter.
I’ll be pretty surprised if Santander tops 30 more than once or twice in his remaining MLB career.
He’s slow and completely 1 dimensional as a hitter, and guys like that don’t tend to perform well deep into their 30s.
I agree with the general sentiment that slugger types do often age poorly, but Santander is only 30 this year.
Last year, the year he had 44 homers, he was sitting on 4 homers as of May 4th.
He currently has 3 on April 28th.
Again, not saying he’ll hit 44, but he’s behaving like his normal self.
Floch – Possible, but Santander also had a career-high WAR in 2023 therefore it wasn’t a Brady Anderson-esque spike in performance last season.
glad that Hays is doing well, but he’ll likely end up on the IL soon based on his history.
Let’s be honest- the yanks would have a 19-9 record if not for Devin Williams and some blown/unfair calls on Judge, etc.
Trill – The bad calls is league-wide.
in the last Jays/Red Sox game the home plate ump blew 14 calls, and 12 of them went against the Jays. ABS can’t come soon enough.
And yeah, that Judge “foul ball” in Tampa was absurd.
Then here is my question- are the umps getting stubborn because they feel threatened by the digital strike zone and the re-play challenges and so they’re actually becoming haphazard if not vindictive in their calling of games, or are they trying too hard and that is causing their performance to ironically suffer or are we all just hyper aware of what is historically pretty normal levels of bad umpiring?
Trill – I won’t say what I said a week or two ago because I don’t want to trigger anyone else, but I’ll say this …. based on the horrific umpiring I’ve noticed, it’s because there are new-ish umpires who aren’t qualified to be MLB umpires.
Trillionaire: I think it’s more of a power trip. They control the game and, since balls and strikes is somewhat subjective (though it shouldn’t be), that gives them even more power. Not all of them are Angel Hernandez, thank goodness.
Yup. Only the Yankees have an exceedingly large share of misfortune and bad luck. Sure!
Fever: I watched Skenes pitch against the Dodgers Friday and I was amazed at how many Ks were called balls. Skenes’ pitches move a lot. The home plate ump should know that and wait until the ball crosses the plate.
avenger – I watched a large part of that game as well, wasn’t it a career-high walks for Yama?
Williams alone cost them three wins.
Bad blown unfair calls, wah. Detroit Pistons have entered the chat
Wow, take away those 9 losses and the Yankees would be undefeated
Os had the most bad ump calls in the league so far this year and possibly turned a few games against them. C.b. calls bad Buckner calling check swings no where near past the plate and balls almost in dirt as strikes bit only against os not their opponents…
Os had the most bad ump calls in the league by far so far as observed by a self described Os fan in PA who watches all the Os games
Dfa should be Fermin HE STINKS
Fermin is valuable infield death. I’d bet they DFA Roddery Munoz instead. And yes, hold me accountable if I’m wrong.
A sweep blows up the season and probably kills off this young group’s chance of a winning culture. It would necessitate a big shock in response, not just firing the manager but kicking him and his close aides out plus DFAs/dump em trades for guys that blow away the rest and send a message.
Oodles and oodles of O’s, you know.
Some shake your hand but this is called the show
Good man
I wouldn’t know I Captain Crunch
For those who don’t know, there was an ugly incident in Cleveland yesterday.
Just as I had expected this season, a fan taunted Duran about his suicide attempt and Duran went after him before being restrained.
I’ve been Duran’s biggest supporter for several years, but I have legit concerns about his ability to handle the unwanted attention that his Netflix confessions are sure to bring. And he hasn’t played in Philly or the Bronx yet this season.
Even the Cleveland fans surrounding the clown thought it was too much.
Rick – Yeah unfortunately there’s more fans out there like him, I highly doubt this sort of thing won’t happen again …. especially when fans are drinking.
At the first game of the Sox/Rays series, a bunch of fans were seemingly mocking Duran by chanting “We’re still here” right behind the dugout.
I know he went public to try and help those who have similar struggles, but he should have known what it would lead to for him. I pray these cruel fans don’t bring him back to that dark place.
Fever – Sports fans aren’t the kind you open up to. It’s a different breed of dog. You remember when Jim Eisenreich went through a lot of garbage when his Tourette Syndrome came to light? And we won’t even mention Jimmy Piersall.
let – Exactly! Yes I remember Jim when it happened, and read up on Jimmy.
I’ve been saying all along, probably best to wait until retirement before unloading like Duran did. Especially corner outfielders who are exposed to fan behavior the most.
And the worst fans usually aren’t even “fans”, as games are just social gatherings for them to drink.
One good thing about the nets around the field, we don’t see fans running onto the field attacking umpires and coaches like they used to.
Fever: I didn’t know anything about this. Thanks for filling us in.
Jimmy Piersall made a terrific transformation, from the nervous twitchy guy like Anthony Perkins to a passionate baseball guy who dedicated the rest of his life to sharing his love of the game as a baseball instructor and sidekick to Harry Caray with the White Sox. Self aware of his rep, he outdid the trolls by reveling in his past as part of a schtick- sorta like John Mullaney
i happened to be in the fenway bleachers during one of the games where eisenreich was taunted it was truly ugly but it was just a few idiots the majority of fans were appalled
Well, they haven’t handed him the bag yet. I know a lot of teams who would welcome his energy and intensity in their lineup.
simon – Yeah he’s the best leadoff hitter they’ve had since Ellsbury.
Some Red Sox “fans” think he should be moved down in the batting order …… absolutely ridiculous.
Guardians don’t play in Philadelphia this season — and their only visit to Yankee Stadium is in early June.
Chuck – Duran plays for the Red Sox, he will be playing in three series this year in Philly and the Bronx.
It’s been a frustrating and disappointing start to the Orioles’ 2025 for sure, but I’m not ready to throw in the towel on the season yet. A number of fresh rotation options should become available in the next 2 or 3 weeks (Gibson, Eflin, Rogers, etc.), which should push Morton to the pen or maybe even off the roster entirely (but probably the former), and the offense will start clicking more consistently at some point. There’s just way too much talent there for it not to, but it’s kinda gotta happen soon or the hole might be too deep to climb out.
I am pumped to see how fresh faces in the rotation will do. That said; the hitting woes go back to late June last season. Oof. I’m not as optimistic here.
I just hope the Os hire Samuel to be the manager, Head Athletic trainer, and the GM, I’m pretty sure he could get things turned around
It’s too bad the Cardinals don’t have someone who can play shortstop and centerfield and also hit well. Someone like Tommy Edman would be perfect. Oh wait…
Edman is exactly where he wants to be. He was never going to be a Cardinal in 2025.
Well he was under contract to be so there was a path.
The Dodgers have the most expensive IL list of SP.
Snell, Glasnow, Kershaw with Gonsolin coming back.
Hopefully not another decade before the Os are relevant again if the current rebuild fails. Don’t have the luxury of deliberately tanking year after year after year, which worked for them and the Cubs and the Astros under the old CBA
with the rate of pitcher injuries i can’t imagine another team winning the world series without a top-10 offense. you can stock as much depth as possible and prey for health but the days of building a team around the starting rotation are (should be) over
