Tyler Glasnow lasted just one inning into today’s start against the Pirates, as the Dodgers right-hander left the mound while taking his warm-up pitches before the beginning of the second frame. The Dodgers officially announced that Glasnow left the game due to discomfort in his throwing shoulder. Following the game, Glasnow told the Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya and other reporters that he’s been dealing with some shoulder soreness recently, calling it a side effect of mechanical changes he’s made to try and reduce stress on his elbow. Manager Roberts said an IL stint for Glasnow is “certainly a possibility,” though more tests will be done before the club makes a decision.
This would be an ominous situation for any pitcher, yet it is particularly troublesome in Glasnow’s case given his long injury history. Glasnow hasn’t been sidelined with a specific shoulder-related issue since way back in his 2016 rookie season, yet the righty has missed big chunks of his career due to a Tommy John surgery, a severe oblique strain, a forearm strain, and two elbows strains. The most recent of those elbow strains came just last season, as Glasnow didn’t pitch after August 11 and subsequently missed out on the Dodgers’ entire playoff run.
Glasnow’s elbow sprain cut short what had been the healthiest season of his entire career. He tossed a career-best 134 innings in 2024, while posting a 3.49 ERA, 32.2% strikeout rate, and 6.7% walk rate. Glasnow had a 3.71 ERA in four starts and 17 innings prior to today’s abbreviated outing, with a much higher walk rate and a fastball that’s been a mile per hour slower than his 2024 velocity (though that drop isn’t necessarily a huge concern this early in a season). This is actually the second straight start that Glasnow has made an early exit; leg cramps forced him out during the fifth inning of his last outing on April 20.
Even if just as a precautionary measure, it would seem like Glasnow is probably headed to the 15-day injured list, creating yet another wrinkle in the revolving door that is the Dodgers’ rotation. Roberts announced just earlier today that Tony Gonsolin was expected to be activated from the 15-day IL to start Wednesday’s game, marking Gonsolin’s long-awaited return to action after he underwent Tommy John surgery late in the 2023 season. Gonsolin was already replacing Blake Snell, who went on the shelf due to shoulder inflammation.
Los Angeles has been dealing with a seemingly unending list of pitching injuries in recent years, though the team’s sheer volume of available arms (and its star-studded lineup) has continued to keep the Dodgers on the winning track. They’ll have to dip into that depth again if Glasnow is out of action, though it will still be a couple of weeks until Clayton Kershaw is eligible to be activated from the 60-day IL. Kershaw is set for two Triple-A rehab starts this coming week as the future Hall-of-Famer is hopefully in the final ramp-up stages towards his 2025 debut.
Surprise, surprise, surprise.
Surprise Surprise Surprise,
It’s not my elbow!
I guess the dodgers are learning that you can’t screw with the baseball gods. no matter how much money you spend building the roster, I cannot anticipate injuries.
Literally all the moves they make are BECAUSE you can anticipate injuries. That’s what depth is for: to overcome injuries.
Out – if you are old enough, I read that in my best mental impression of Gomer Pyle. If you don’t know, hit YouTube.
Had no need for YouTube memory served perfectly.
So Glasnow is dating Lou Ann Poovie?
Well, I declare!
Never connected the dots that Pam Poovie from archer has the same last name.
Exactly who I had in mind.
People in Glasnow’s house shouldn’t throw Gavin Stone.
(Because Stone is also on the IL)
Fragile is as fragile does.
Sting agrees
I don’t even think he’s fragile. This is the consequence of throwing max velocity with max spin rate every single pitch.
That didn’t take long
“Didn’t take long”…His hair is the only durable part of Tyler Glasnow. It’s literally the only part of his body that doesn’t go on the IL regularly.
Rich Hill is still available
“Still available”..Urban lore has it, that Rich Hill once struck out Jesus on a 12-6 curveball in the dirt.
Are you saying Jesus christ can’t hit a curveball?
You’re thinking of Jesus Sanchez
Jesus Alou.
Up your butt Jobu.
Eddie Schoup!
“Could Jesus microwave a burrito so hot he himself couldn’t eat it?”
Is very bad to steal Joni’s rum
…is very bad
“Are you saying Jesus Christ can’t”..No, you misunderstand. I’m not saying that at all. You were the only one who actually mentioned “Jesus Christ.”
When I said “struck out” I was talking about Jesus Montero, the former top prospect the Mariners acquired from the NY Yankees right before the 2012 season.
Why on Earth would I suggest that Rich Hill struck out the real Jesus Christ, when everyone knows that Jesus is omnipotent and all powerful and can only be “struck out” if his Father in Heaven allows it?
Yo bartender, Jobu needs a refill
Jesus Made can hit a curveball.
Rich Hill = Dick Mountain
aaron – They could lure Paxton and Kluber out of retirement too.
Lance Lynn!!!
Frankly, I’m stunned that all of these injury prone pitchers that comprise the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching staff are succumbing to injuries. Stunned, I tell you. Where is Clayton Kershaw when you need him?
They have a knack of collecting them.
They’ll landon a solution.
Raven – They can afford the risk, that’s why they do it.
Glasnow is a pticher that the Dodgers cannot rely on.
Many people call me crazy when i said i rather keep Ryan Pepiot & Jonny Deluca rather than trade for Glasnow.
Where?
I’m pretty sure that the Dodgers are regretting the Pepiot trade for the shiny new toy Glasnow. It’s ok….they’ll just buy another.
Bigger regret is extending him. My initial take was that it was a bad trade given Glasnow’s injury history. It’s clear that he’s more talented than Pepiot but if you can’t stay healthy especially for postseason what’s the point?
They we’re never supposed to win the trade. It was a loser the second it was made. Dodgers one of the few teams who could even make the trade. They know they signed some injury prone pitchers. They just have so many pitchers if one is missing in post season they can deal with it easily. Only if 2 are down they are in some trouble. But they just get one at deadline. Glasnow down now trade deadline. If after trade deadline they sign someone in off season.
Not sure if that’s exactly how they see it. I do think that they’re a bit casual about injury history. They must think that they can make a tweak here or there mechanically that would make pitchers less injury prone. That clearly hasn’t been the case. Guarantee you that if they knew Glasnow would be this injury prone they wouldn’t have made the trade, and definitely not extended him.
All the had to do was look at his games started or # of innings or lack of. It shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Again, not if we can fix him mentality and perhaps a little bit of mean reversion mentality. He’s already been hurt, so perhaps he’s less likely to get hurt going forward, especially with a few tweaks. I don’t agree with this train of thought. And I’m not denying that the Dodgers did their due diligence. They knew exactly the risks and still took a chance on Glasnow. I’m sure many other teams would have passed on a Glasnow trade. A bit reckless if you ask me.
Yes, they have the deeper pockets to make an acquisition if their frontline pitchers go down, but it takes two to tango, and there are only a few top pitchers who are available. Last year it worked out, barely with Flaherty, a gone for a good part of the season Yamamoto, and a barely recovered and rusty Buehler. Year before not so much. A terrible Lance Lynn acquisition, a gimpy Kershaw, a very green Bobby Miller, etc. That’s exactly why you need to be more cautious about pitching injury history.
His health can improve. Just don’t think it’s a big deal. The $ they spent they don’t need everyone healthy. Previous years they didn’t have what they have now. Added Glasnow. Then Snell Roki. Hopefully get Ohtani back. Kershaw May Goslin are just depth piece. They don’t need 200 innings from everyone. They have a great pen. Would take a disaster to be where they were previous years. Wouldn’t even need to get the top trade target. Just get a 4th 5th starter.
It’s not a mechanical issue. If Glasnow threw 90-93 instead of trying to throw 99 his arm would be better. It’s funny how many people in baseball and how many fans act like there’s some mystery factor causing all these injuries when these pitchers are asked to do the equivalent of sprinting a marathon.
It’s not only throwing harder but it’s also trying to maximize spin which is absolutely pitching mechanics related. The latter equally if not more important contributor to pitching injuries. The Dodgers being such an analytical team are all-in on maximizing spin rates and increasing performance. They’ve sent many pitchers to Driveline to understand spin rates, etc. Yes, maximizing velocity is part of the equation into increasing spin rates, but definitely not the only factor. Look at pitchers like Sasaki who have high velocity but low spin rates, and consequently low whiff rate. It’s a work in progress, but unfortunately it seems to drive pitching injuries.
No doubt they started the year with great depth, but we all knew that this perceived depth would get quickly depleted. Although I didn’t think it would be so quickly into the season. I laughed when fans said that Gonsolin should be traded given the depth. I was thinking you may want to keep him when the injuries start to pile up. I have zero confidence that any of the Dodgers SP can be fully healthy over the course of a full season. They will spend some time in the IL, and you just pray that you have enough SP at the end. Luck of the draw when they get hurt (not if).
A fourth/fifth starter won’t do you much if Snell, Ohtani, Yamamoto and Glasnow can’t pitch. And kid you not certainly a possibility that none of them are available come postseason, or perhaps only one. We don’t know. None of us knows.
And by the way the bullpen has their own share of injuries. Graterol is rarely available and should not be counted on. Treinen is already gone for a good chunk of 2025 and you hope he can pitch postseason as he’s been a big health risk. Kopech is out and surely a big injury risk. Phillips was unavailable for parts of last postseason and got a late start to 2025. Etc, etc, etc.
What is interesting is that the Dodgers have invested money into companies looking at injury prevention. That seems to counter their goal of maximizing velocity/spin. Perhaps they’ve been trying to do both at the same time but realizing that doesn’t work. Maybe some trial and error but something has to give. Lower spin/lower velocity equals higher health but lower performance, and vice versa. Can’t have it both ways.
When you spend $400M, prospect don’t matter. That’s 15 key players at $25M each.
Don’t blame the Glas. Shoulder to blame.
Glass shoulder?
Glass now.
I’ve said numerous times this guy should convert to the bullpen. He’s just not durable for many innings.
If he can’t take care of his arm every five days then anything less often just doesn’t seem possible.
It is almost May so he’s about on schedule for his first IL trip of the season
This ain’t no fooling around.
No time for dancing. Or lovey dovey!
I ain’t got time for that now
Giraffes do not prefer glass or smaller versions.
Glass yesterday, glass now and glass forever.
But is he half full or half empty?
Both.
Glasnost
Interesting to hear all the medical theories connecting elbow and shoulder injuries. The web MDs around here are awesome.
Ha ha. Yes they are. On this occasion.
No, really. If I ever have a health issue, forget doctors. What do they know? I’m going to ask all the wise birds here because Some Guy on the Internet always has the answer.
I get it. Credit where credit is due. They nailed it on this occasion.
They always do!
“Interesting to hear..Web MDs around here”…,,,What you’re saying is completely ludicrous my friend. Insane really.
Next thing you know, you yahoos will be questioning the medical degree I obtained simply by watching all of Aaron Boone’s Yankee press conferences.
Where does it all end? Whats your end game? Are you connected to big Pharma? Is this a shakedown? If we meet I’m going to ensure it’s in a public place.
I got my medical degree at Montgomery-Ward. Unfortunately they are out of business so I can’t prove it. Now, turn your head and cough!
“Degree at Montgomery Ward “….I know, right? This is a bias of “alternative” medicine to the highest degree. My own brother is a “Sears” trained surgeon.
Does this Yahoo even have any idea of how many Dr. Aaron Boone press conferences I watched to earn my degree?
We in the “alternative” medicine practices are always being discriminated against and looked down upon. It’s bias I tell ya.
When you remove your own appendix, can I watch?
Is it his throwing appendix?
Glasnow connected the shoulder to his elbow in the quote in this article.
Not really. He connected it to changes in his mechanics. But it turns out all dem bones are connected.
He connected it to changes in his mechanics to protect his elbow. It amounts to the same thing, semantics notwithstanding.
I don’t see this as being about semantics so much as it is about the structure of the arm. Nothing beats up an arm quite like pitching a baseball. Shifting the stress points does not reduce the inherent stress of the mechanical actions it requires. Anyway, they have excellent trainers and sports medicine people to deal with these issues as best they can. I’ve never seen the point of fans debating the issue and have to laugh at fans who claim to know how to predict who will be injured and when.
glasnow + snell are always hurt. and deferrals decided to sign both. to huge contracts. reap what you sow
This is why we keep 100 pitchers.
Modern day pitchers are as soft as they come.
Still weird as hell to trade for a starter who had 7 years of service time but only managed to make 20 starts in 1 of those seasons while topping out at 120 IP and extending him for 30m/yr.
His durability made Blake Snell look like Nolan Ryan.
It’s unusual Glasnow discovered a slider while in Pittsburgh.
I think he just got tired of failing.
I agree. I thought it was a bad trade and a even worse extension.
The Rays saw Glasnow with an unreal slider in June 2018 and the Pirates didn’t know Taillon, Musgrove, Crick, Kuhl, Trevor WIlliams also had one. The information came from an outside source. Searage even said after the trade, Glasnow got a tip, not from me. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.
Dodgers won in ’24 without Glas for most of the season and all of the postseason. If need be will do it again.
Indubitably
He was probably embarrassed by a 38 year old Cutch hitting a home run against him
Glasnow and Snell shoulders to blame.
The Dodgers used 17 different starters last year and still won the World Series.
They’ve already used 9 this year and it’s still April.
I’m just curious what the final number will be and whether or not it will have a significant affect.
Snell… now Glasnow??? Wow, that’s crazy! I mean it’s not like the Dodgers have a track record where pitchers have a hard time staying healthy. After all, Sasaki chose Los Angeles because of their track record of keeping pitchers healthy. That is what was said. Maybe “staying healthy“ means something different in Japanese?
This just in, Glasnow goes to the IL and water is wet.
Goose,
Interestingly, water is nor actually wet. It is a liquid that makes things that it touches wet.
What else is new.
Gonsolin is a good pitcher and only thirty years old. I believe the Dodgers are feinting these injuries to their starters to rest them.
I really do believe that they would do that.
Yeah, pull him out of a game after one inning. Sure. Whoops, there goes a unicorn! How did I miss it before?
Only a matter of time Roki.
Just keep checking that stopped watch of yours. It’s bound to be right eventually.
Just like an inevitable Dodger pitcher injury.
Just like an inevitable close but no cigar Padres season. Keep wishing them ill little brother.
Glasnow, Snell, Musgrove robbed the bank.
Do owners like paying 5 M for ONE WIN?
In 2018 they learned how to throw a different type slider and now many get ridiculous contracts.
If Glasnow and Snell don’t need surgery it would be wise for them to do nothing for about 21 days and when they throw the ball all the pain is gone. Instead you therapists that never pitched before giving their opinions. All the aces back decades ago would feel like a loser if they didn’t finish the game, most threw 120-150 pitches in 7 inning games. The aces that were strikeout pitchers easily averaged 20 pitches an inning. 9 inning legion games I threw 170 pitches then I didn’t touch a ball until my 4th or 5th day start. That’s how you build up an arm, by throwing a baseball. That’s the way it was.
BLEEP LA. Hope they rot
You are not worth anything.
Cal is that you?
It’s his dog, Spot.
My favorite “spot” was Deacon Jones.
Had to look that up. Unfortunately it seems the video is not available.
I couldn’t be any happier as fate has begun to hit glasnow, snell and the dodgers and all baseball fans everywhere except LA couldn’t be happier!
Baseball fans shouldn’t be happy when an injury happens, Bruce.
What are the odds that snell and glasnow rework their contracts because they love the team so much just like ohsani?
When he’s on his game, I think his stuff is as filthy as any in the league.
The “when” part just isn’t often enough.
“When he’s party with his bros, he is as filthy as any in the league.” – Alice the housekeeper.
Good thing they have like a thousand other SPs…
Today’s pitchers are paper tigers, bring back the fat drunken slobs of yesteryear who could throw 300 innings, and 25 complete games.
In a wifebeater!
Mickey Lolich and Wilbur Wood in 21st century Dodger blue.
You mean the guy who probably uses more force and torque than almost any other humans alive to throw a baseball is hurt… again…
Cue Captain Renault.
These pitchers are all made of glass now.
Officially the 1000th time I’ve read this pun.
Show us the receipts!
So uhhh, he’s made mechanical adjustments to reduce stress on his elbow, thereby increasing stress on his shoulder. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Glasnow was suffering with his curve he’s been using for years. He wanted a little Irish lucky curve. He found the unlucky clover.
He pitched 134 innings last year. That’s two years worth of innings for Glasnow. His body is exhausted.
He will be prepared by 2027.
