Triston Casas Likely To Miss Entire 2025 Season Due To Knee Surgery

By Darragh McDonald and Leo Morgenstern | May 3, 2025 at 10:58pm CDT

The Red Sox announced this morning that they have placed first baseman Triston Casas on the 10-day injured list with a ruptured left patellar tendon. He suffered the injury during last night’s game. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow says that Casas will have surgery and they don’t expect him back this year, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

To replace Casas on the active roster, the team has selected Abraham Toro’s contract from Triple-A Worcester. Boston had an open spot on the 40-man, so no further corresponding transaction was necessary. In an additional roster move, the Red Sox reinstated Brennan Bernardino from the bereavement list and optioned Luis Guerrero to Triple-A.

The Casas news is awful but unsurprising. He suffered an obvious injury last night when he hit the first base bag awkwardly while trying to beat out a grounder. He was down on the ground in clear pain for a long time and eventually was taken off the field on a stretcher. It seemed likely that he would miss an extended period of time and that is now confirmed. He hasn’t yet been moved to the 60-day IL but that will happen whenever the Sox need a 40-man spot.

The Sox will have to figure out what to do about replacing Casas at first base. Breslow says that all options are on the table and he didn’t rule out Rafael Devers taking over, though outfield prospect Roman Anthony or infield prospect Marcelo Mayer are unlikely to be moved to first.

Devers is currently the full-time designated hitter after getting bumped off third base by Alex Bregman. Moving him into first base and opening the DH spot would help the club with some roster crunches elsewhere.

Anthony and Mayer are two of the best prospects in baseball, but both are currently in Triple-A and somewhat blocked on the big league roster. The Sox currently have an outfield mix consisting of Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela and Rob Refsnyder. The infield has Bregman, Trevor Story and Kristian Campbell at third base, shortstop and second base respectively. Outfielder/designated hitter Masataka Yoshida could get into the mix as well, though he has been battling ongoing shoulder problems and his return timeline is unclear.

With Devers in the DH spot, it’s a bit of a crowded picture. If he were to take over at first base, that would open things up and allow various players to rotate through the DH spot. Devers has no professional experience at first but plenty of subpar third basemen have made the move across the diamond over the years. While Breslow seemed to leave the door open to the idea, manager Alex Cora downplayed the possibility. “From my end, right now, no…. he’s my DH,” Cora said, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

For now, it seems like utility infielder Romy González will be the first attempt. Cora tells Speier that this is an opportunity for González “to go out and perform.” He is the only Boston player apart from Casas to have played first base this year. He’s having a decent season so far, with a .279/.340/.419 batting line and 113 wRC+. However, that comes with no home runs and a .364 batting average on balls in play. In his 502 career plate appearances, he has a .246/.277/.390 line and 81 wRC+.

That career production would be less than ideal production from first base, which is generally a bat-first position, but the Sox will give it a try for now. Perhaps they will explore some external options in the coming weeks, looking to make a trade or grab another player off waivers. Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe says that Breslow is indeed looking at the trade market.

González had previously been in a multi-positional role, having also played some second and third base this year. In his career, he has played shortstop and the outfield as well. With him set to become the club’s regular first baseman for now, Toro has been added to add some defensive versatility to the bench.

Toro, 28, signed a minor league deal with the Sox in the offseason. He has been performing well in Triple-A so far this year, with a .310/.403/.480 line, though a .392 BABIP is doing him some favors. In his big league career, he has played the three non-shortstop infield positions and the outfield corners. He has always hit well in Triple-A but has a .220/.285/.353 line and 82 wRC+ in 1,298 big league plate appearances.

Is Grissom already on the 40 man roster? If so, I’m surprised they didn’t bring him up over Toro. They need to keep that open 40 man spot for the promotion of Mayer or Anthony. Then again, once they move Casas to the 60 day IL, they will open up another spot, but it would have been nice to keep that extra spot open.

Dorothy, i think the reason you dont see grissom is thr club sees him as a trade piece. If he rebuilds value in AAA and rakes he may net somethng as part of the deal.

You call grissom up and he flops, again, hes woeth nothing.

Grissom ain’t going anywhere if he can’t prove himself in the Majors. He’s already raked at AAA. He’s already going nowhere playing in the Minors. He’s seen as an AAAA player unless he plays

GaSox – That approach is 100% correct for prospects on an upward trajectory in the minors (like Nick Yorke), but not for a veteran like Grissom who became a full time MLB player 3 years ago but has been demoted for 3 consecutive years now.

Unfortunately the only way to rebuild value for non-prospects is at the major league level, which is why guys like Dalbec and Franchy became worthless despite dominating the minors.

Dotty – Sorry for the late response, I’ve been quite busy.

Yes Grissom is on the 40-man. He has only 27 professional innings at first base, whereas Toro has 254. I wouldn’t read too much into it though, I think perhaps the Sox just wanted to get a look at Toro in the majors while giving first base reps to Grissom in AAA rather than the majors.

Bigger picture which I haven’t seen anyone else notice, on what other MLB team does the manager overrule the POBO? We all knew Cora has more clout than Breslow, but for him to publicly and bluntly say in essence “Ignore Breslow, I’m the manager and I say Devers will not play first base” is absolutely ridiculous.

I really wish Breslow would get some stones and stand up to Cora once in a while, but Henry’s blind support of Cora probably has scared Breslow from doing that. What a messed up dysfunctional organization.

Fever Pitch Guy: There is no way you can reasonably conclude all that from afar. We have no idea what internal discussions have happened before someone says something to the media. The Bregman signing showed me that Cora isn’t running things. I think if Cora had more clout than Breslow that Bregman would have been signed a lot quicker than he was.

This is such a misleading, clickbait headline. He has already played 29 games this year. So how could he miss the entire season? He may well miss the remainder of the season – but he hasn’t missed the entire season if he’s played 29 games.

And the clickbait accusation is bizarre …. as if “Remainder of season” wouldn’t garner as many views? It was definitely misuse of the word “clickbait”.

As for your last question, go see The Accountant 2 for the answer ;O)

So Story has been benched today in favor of Hamilton, with Campbell batting cleanup. Kinda strange considering Story is batting .375 since May 2 and tomorrow is a day off.

Story has played 34/35 games this year, and giving him today off with tomorrow off as well is a typical Cora move. Story’s history of injuries, and his age make it a smart move. David needs some more ABs, and as we saw he changes the game when he’s in there consistently. He doesn’t hurt defensive in reality for a spot start. Crochet on the mound, it’s just not a bad day to do it.

cdr – I agree with most of what you wrote, I’m just wondering if he was scheduled off in advance or if something came up such as a minor injury.

Needing THREE days off over an 8-day period is a bit excessive, don’t you think?

I would think a day off in the middle of the 13-game stretch May 16-28 would be more advantageous.

I will be closely monitoring the situation.

Yes, certainly should be an easy win today.

cdr – Did you see Hamilton fail to catch that ball which was hit right at him? The one that ended up contributing to the loss today? Story makes that catch, without question. But Cora wanted him to have 3 days off during an 8 day period. Nice call there, Alex.

I cannot believe the Sox lost a series that they SHOULD have swept. The Twins, who came into Fenway with a miserable 4-13 road record.

On a day in which Rafaela actually had two hits, they lose DESPITE the fact two Twins fielders stood and stared at each other a foot apart while an easy popup dropped between them, leading to two Red Sox runs.

So even though the Twins tried to give the game away, they STILL beat the Red Sox.

So why did the Sox lose, besides the usual anemic offense?

Because Whitlock tired in the 7th after pitching the 6th.

And why did Whitlock pitch the 6th?

Because once again Crochet couldn’t last beyond the 5th.

And once again Slaten choked, giving up yet another late inning lead as his ERA ballooned to 6.57 now.

Losing 2 of 3 at home to the Twins is inexcusable.

18-18 despite literally the easiest schedule in MLB is inexcusable.

As Dave O’Brien said, “Another brutal loss for the Boston Red Sox”.

But as everyone knows I prefer to stay positive, and there were definitely some positives as well.

Abreu had another fantastic game with 3 hits including a huge homerun. Anyone who thinks he should be the odd man out when Anthony is promoted is crazy.

Rafaela had two hits and didn’t strike out.

Liam had his best performance of the season.

And Cora is still listening to me, calling for Hamilton to put down a great bunt that directly led to two runs being scored. Better late than never, Alex.

Kirby hasn’t pitched an inning in 2025 yet
Gilbert was pulled after 3 innings for a flexor strain
Miller didn’t look great in the 1st month
Woo who as well in April
So maybe not so wisely. I doubt Casas lunges and takes a trip over France in Seattle unless the trade happen last year..

Although I do believe that the pitchers outcomes so far would have been the same in Seattle, Boston or France.

But for some reason hitting is what Seattle isn’t lacking for once.
        J. Polanco is hitting better than A. Judge in April,
Seattle is in 1st after winning 8 straight series in a row with 7 starters on the IL.

Who woulda thunk it was wise to keep the pitchers, haha.

cr4 – How did Casas do in Texas and Tampa?

Pretty sure cold weather wasn’t a factor there.

There was a lot going on that contributed to his slow start …. lingering concern about re-injuring his rib cage, different batting stance, crappy instructions from Fatso and company.

Casas is a unique indvidual, I’ll leave it at that.

That track record has to be rough for a team that plays cold weather games to start and end the season, can’t expect him to hit to start a year, and just gets hot for a short period before the temperature drops again.

Just kidding. I don’t buy that stuff. He has holes in his swing pitchers exploit, has trouble making useful outs by moving runners along when he makes his outs. He plays extremely subpar defense, has negative speed, and misses far too many pitching mistakes to be relied upon as an elite middle of the order bat till he is able to learn and execute situationally.

Having a good eye is great, but getting rung up several times a week on called third strikes because you have a good eye means you have no situational awareness of what is being called by the umpire and what that situation calls for, which would be swinging the bat instead of taking that third strike call. It doesn’t help many of those third strikes are real third strikes.

It sounds harsh because I believe this kid has the raw talent and size to be great, but he isn’t mentally there. He has logged enough at bats for me to witness a guy that is so far up his own ass, overthinking it all, that he has sabotaged himself.
Keep it simple brainiac. Have an idea what the at bat calls for with runners on or simply driving up the pitch count. Get your foot down and keep your upper body back to be able to adjust. Be quick to the ball, do not hitch. Use the contact and your size to drive the ball to where the pitcher has allowed you to drive it. Overswinging is a completely un-needed flaw that damages your speed, swing path, and vision (ALSO TALKING TO YOU DEVERS!!!). If you are a corn fed mule, does it really matter if the ball clears the fence 16 times a year by 100ft when you could potentially clear it 30+ times by a few feet to anywhere in the ballpark anyway with a non idiotic swing? If the pitch makes you fall in any direction off balance it isn’t a strike if you have plate coverage.

william – Fantastic post! Yes 15 months ago when people here were clamoring for a huge Casas extension, I pointed out the risk involved with his behavior was a concern. Baseball is very much a mental game, the statheads just don’t realize that. When I point that out with players like Rafaela, I provide many detailed facts/reasons to support my concerns. Million dollar athlete with a ten cent brain is the most common term.

I think the same concern is there for Duran. It’s like alcoholics, they could go without booze for years but they are still alcoholics who could relapse at any time.

BTW – Did you hear Bradford talk about Devers? He said Devers definitely wants to play first base, but refuses to speak publicly about the matter. Well we already knew he wants to play in the field.

And some people are getting on his case for refusing to speak …. WHY?

It would be a no-win situation for him.

If he says “Yes I’d like to play first base” there would be people saying “There he goes again, making demands about playing a position”.

If he says “No I’d rather stay as a DH” then those same people will say “He’s selfish, he’s not a team player, he should be trying to help the team by asking to play first base”.

Why is it the most active people on social media are often the most clueless? LOL!

Wait – Even if the rib cage was healthy, it’s common to have a lingering psychological effect.

If I’m Casas I probably wouldn’t swing as hard as I did pre-injury out of fear of re-injury.

No different than Story being afraid to dive because he doesn’t want to re-injure his shoulder.

Wait – Sorry but Stymee is right on this one.

“Finding holes” involves guiding the ball.

The harder you swing, the less you are able to guide the ball.

Case in point, the current MLB leader in Exit Velo is Oneil Cruz.

He has 8 homeruns but is batting only .252

Swinging harder does mainly one thing, more homeruns and extra base hits. It also leads to making contact less often though.

GaSox – Power not only rules, power corrupts.

Rafaela is a perfect example, he’s a little guy who keeps swinging for the fences because he wants the homeruns. But it’s also causing him to strike out a lot and bat .208 with a .270 OBP.

Listening to the game yesterday and the radio guys were bashing Rafaela’s over-aggressiveness. They said he leads MLB with a 58% first-pitch-swing percentage … and just like clockwork he struck out swinging on just 4 pitches and they talked about it being an awful at bat.

You should have seen the PA ….

First pitch swinging strike on a 82 MPH changeup 6 inches below the strike zone.

Second pitch swinging strike on a 81 MPH changeup 9 inches below the strike zone.

Third pitch 89 MPH 4-seam fastball a foot outside taken for a ball.

Fourth pitch swinging strike on a 81 MPH changeup that was on the ground.

They need to replace Rafaela with Anthony as soon as Anthony is fully healthy.

Disagree, you can’t guide the ball effectively at the major league level.

Exit velocities aren’t the only factor, it makes a big difference whether you hit the ball in the air or on the ground. Line drives of course are the most likely to fall in. Speed also matters.

But all else equal, hitting the ball harder produces better results.

Rafaela has a very high chase rate and a lot of “medium” contact. He will never be a good hitter unless he addresses the plate discipline.

Agreed that Anthony is likely to be an upgrade. By the end of the year he could be the best Red Sox OF.

Wait – You really don’t think good hitters like Devers, Duran etc intentionally try to go opposite field, especially lefty hitters in Fenway who choose to sacrifice pull power because of the huge RF distance and the closeness of the Green Monster?

You really think hitting a ball harder to right field in Fenway is more productive than hitting a ball less hard to left field?

“I’m not trying to do too much. I’m not trying to pull the ball and muscle everything. I’m just trying to stay loose and work the other way”. —- Jarren Duran, who has ignored the team’s “swing as hard as possible at every pitch” mantra.

          mlb.com/news/breakdown-of-jarren-duran-s-opposite-…

When pulling the ball, the left-handed Duran is batting a mere .219. This is the second-lowest mark in the Majors (min. 50 pulled batted balls), ahead of only Miami’s Nick Fortes, and almost 150 points below the MLB average.

But when it comes to hitting the ball to the opposite field, the narrative couldn’t be more … well, opposite. On batted balls that have gone “oppo,” Duran has a .468 batting average and .722 slugging percentage, including an MLB-high 16 doubles. The batting average ranks second among MLB players with at least 50 batted balls to the opposite field, trailing teammate Rafael Devers.

That isn’t “guiding the ball to a hole”. Of course good hitters will take certain pitches to the opposite field.

You know of course that Duran saw his exit velocities jump last year, right? You still deny that played a role in his success? He wasn’t going opposite field any more than he did in 2023.

Many pieces to successful hitting, but hitting the ball hard is a big part of it.

Wait – Absolutely I agree with you that hitting the ball hard helps. That ball that went through Hamilton today was hit hard (although should have been error), if it was hit softer he likely would have caught it.

All I’m saying is swinging as hard as possible all the time will lead to less frequent contact. And that’s what the Red Sox have been doing, and it’s hurting their offense especially in close games.

It may be what they are doing at times, but it is not what the coaching staff is encouraging. Guys like Duran, Campbell, Abreu, and (at a lower level) Romy Gonzalez really epitomize their style. It isn’t about swinging hard on every pitch, it is about impacting the RIGHT pitch, and hitting it where it is pitched rather than trying to yank everything for a home run.

Yes, they key on exit velocities in part, but you don’t get great exit velocities by swinging hard, you get them by hitting the ball squarely. If you look at Romy’s career, you see a clear shift when he came to the Red Sox and started working with the coaches here. He struck out 36% of the time with the White Sox, just 26% of the time here. That’s still on the high side, but it is passable – he is a MUCH better hitter now than he was previously, and his exit velocities have jumped two ticks. That’s huge for a player who hasn’t grown any bigger or stronger.

Campbell is still learning, he has room for improvement. You can see tremendous EV on his best swings, but he isn’t squaring the ball up all that much yet. So his average EV is on the low side. Scary to think he still has room for improvement.

Devers came up when they were preaching a different style, and has resisted learning. He is a talented hitter, of course, but undisciplined – and thus his exit velocities hung around 93 for years. **THIS** year that has jumped over 95, and he is barreling the ball regularly. Lifted his launch angle a bit as well. He’s still adjusting to this style (and going opposite filed more often than in the past), but you’ve seen it beginning to click the last couple weeks. His ratio of Soft/Med/Hard contact is at the best levels of his career. I suspect this is part of why they don’t want him learning a new position. After seven years in the majors, it is high time that he mature into the kind of hitter he can be.

Rafaela is running on borrowed time. Anthony is clearly the better player, and they can’t keep him down forever. At that point somebody loses their starting job, and it doesn’t look like it will be Duran or Abreu.

I believe there are 150-155 days left in the ML season (out of 187). You need 172 for a full year of service time, so Anthony would not qualify if he were to come up now. Unless that is he were to win ROTY – isn’t there an exception for that?

Personally I think he would need 100 games minimum to ensure a shot.

Wait – I think it’s a matter of exactly how serious the Sox are in contending this year. If they are truly serious, to the point where they will actually acquire somebody GOOD at the trade deadline, then yeah I agree bring Anthony up right now.

But if they are gonna stick to their original stated plan and WaitTil2026 to contend, then I can see keeping Anthony down until he’s not possibly eligible to come in Top Two for ROY this year. Because what’s the point of losing a year of team control this year if he’s not gonna make a difference with contending this year.

BTW – Here is a FANTASTIC breakdown of the Devers situation including how the Red Sox have totally mishandled him, what he struggled with as a 3B, and why he should be able to play first base seamlessly.

Alex Speier and Lou Merloni go into great detail explaining exactly what I have been saying for more than 6 months now. Just like I do, they bring the facts to back them up such as stats that prove it was going to his left which Devers really sucked at …. not going to his right.

Case in point, he said he likes to do and say things just to piss people off. Red Sox Nation always kinda figured that was the reason for his many antics that pissed off his teammates and others.

It’s a shame because the guy does have a lot of talent as a hitter, but unfortunately he’s his own worst enemy. Stubborn and difficult to coach/manage.

          C’mon Man!
Only place hes going is to the post office to drop off his pen pal letters to Trout, Rendon & Bryant.

Really what story has is 25m in ’26, 25m in ’27, and then its a team option, either 25m vs a 5m buyout.

So, technically its either $55m/2 years or $75/3 years depending what the sox want to do

Even if he hit like a mad man for 162 i dont see him getting 30MM plus for 4/5 yrs or even 2/57.5 on the FA tour.

Pete Alonso, I know they are not the same players but they have comparable numbers/age.
Alonso is younger and he had a hard time getting 30mm with a 24mm player option.
I could see him getting around 3/75 but Story exceeding that at his age, injury history and the numbers since at Boston is hard to see happening.
What other 33yr old FA has passed 30mm for multiply yrs?

I think we are stuck with Story for 2 more years and between him, Campbell and Mayer they will have middle and left side of the infield covered. Maybe even include Rafaela in the mix if he ever gets his stuff together, since no other team will touch him with that contract. I wouldn’t rule out Grissom just yet, but he’s a longshot.

Casas is just entitled with an ego, not really a cancer. I wouldnt want him in my clubhouse just because hes not a team player, but, given his age he never learned in school that theres no I in team.

Still i wish him the best on his recovery. My thoughts on his lack of respect for tradition and his lack of empathy for teammates feelings have nothing to do with his injury troubles.

GaSox – Well said! It’s a complex situation with Casas. He obviously went through a horrible experience as a kid and that likely led to his receiving a lot of extra attention and preferential treatment which made him the way he is today.

But like you and many others, all I care about is performance. I don’t expect every Sox player to be a role model like Mookie, Xander, etc.

And on a side note, I wish the term “cancer” wasn’t thrown around so much when referring to players who are difficult. Just seems insensitive to me.

Acell, its documented that casas engaged in behaviors in the locker room and on the field before games that were upsetting teammates in the organization. He refused to change or modify those behaviors to account for said teammates. That fits the definition in my book.

GA: the only locker room behavior that was considered a “problem” was that he did know where the nap room was and was told about it and corrected the behavior. That was documented. Some other teammates took issue with his sunbathing in field not because it hurt the team or caused any sort of problems but because they personally didn’t like it. Those vets were being bad teammates. They were also the same vets that created a bad atmosphere in the locker room for players like Duran when they came up. Thankfully those uptight vets who were gatekeeping are no longer with the team.

Another thing from the Netflix doc, when he was wished “good luck” at the end of an interview and he responded in a completely serious manner “save it for someone who needs it”. Talk about a massive ego.

Suit, someone (i think maybe it was acell?) and I had a convo earlier this spring that kinda sheds light on why i draw conclusions like that. Chalk it up to a mix of gen x cynicism, a dash of get off my lawn, memories of walking uphill both ways to and from school in 2 foot snowdrifts, and a dash of nostalgia.

In short, i dont look at things the way young kids these days do. Im all for letting the kids express thenselves who come up these days, but, temper it with respect for the traditions. Some couldnt give a hoot for any of the traditions. Baseball lives and dies to a degree based on nostalgia. In casas i see a guy who, from my perspective, doesnt have enough of the respect for the traditions.

Anyone who doesnt care or likes what he brings? Good for them, i wont hold it against them. But as for me, i dont like it.

I see your point though. Eventually as an adult he should realize he’s not a child anymore and lots of people have had to deal with adversity. But unfortunately it’s easier said than done.

Childhood is a formative period, how you’re raised often determines why you behave the way you do. That’s why I have empathy for Casas, knowing what he went through. It’s the same reason why I have empathy for those I’ve muted, I know they were likely raised in a similar pampered fashion or have personal challenges.

But in the end, knowing why someone is anti-social doesn’t give them a free pass to behave in an anti-social manner.

GaSox – Hey I’m Gen X and I’m all about optimism! But like you, I agree that a spade should be called a spade. Never apologize for having the intelligence and integrity to notice and acknowledge faults of players.

You touched upon what I believe to be the most important word, and that is respect. Treat others the way you’d want to be treated. And yes you’re right, the young players often have an “I don’t give a damn” attitude and it’s extremely selfish and self-centered.

So while it doesn’t matter to me how Casas behaves, I respect your right to dislike him.

Red Sox called up 28-year-old Abraham Toro from Worcester. Toro plays mostly 3B but has played other infield positions including 1B (5 games this year). Romy Gonzales, who has played 9 games at 1B this year, & Toro will likely fill in the gap at first until, or if, the Sox target someone else.

Kurtz’s not ready, he has a lot to work on, probably more than Mayer, but at the moment he’s gotten to the big first because the A’s are aggressive with their promotions, mainly due to AAA affiliate being a launching pad not suitable as a finishing school. A great comparison for Kurtz’s development steps is Soderstrom. Although Kurtz is likely to improve faster as the better prospect, there is still going to be a learning curve. We can see it at the moment for Kurtz by checking out his strikeout rate and his contact rates, in and out of the zone.

It makes the most sense to move Trevor Story to 1B and bring up Marcelo Mayer to play SS. Playing 1B will help Story stay healthy for the year and allow them to add a LHH in Mayer (to replace Casas).

Story should have no problem playing 1B. He’d be great at scooping balls in the dirt as well.

Grissom is playing in AAA, and we let Romy Gonzalez play over him when Grissom is finally showing some success. We can’t promote our rookies because of a clear logjam, and Cora can’t get the right guys in the right positions.

Its a mess and it’s costing our games. Don’t even get me started on pitching. Cora should’ve pulled Dobbins after 5. Inexperienced pitcher facing the lineup the third time is not a good plan. It was a gamble but every time Cora touches pitching, he looks like a clown. So different from 2018 where he was the hero

A Nolan Arenado trade to play 1B has been floated. Raffy could do it with Yoshida getting time DH once healthy. I think Cora wants Raffy off his feet focusing purely on hitting.

When Yoshida comes back, if Anthony’s struggling, he goes back to AAA. If Anthony’s doing well, the Sox should throw in 20-25 mil or so, and get what they can for Yoshida.

You’re at .500 right now in large part because your starting 1B is hitting under .200, and your pitching has been just ok.

Personally, I believe Anthony would be a big improvement as far as the offense is concerned.

I never had faith in Dalbec 2.0 Casas. He’s never had a full decent season and it’s pretty obvious he wasn’t going to this year either way. The injury was a bit predictable.

We are at .500 because the team is terrible and Cora forgot how to properly manage a team.

Anthony hasn’t had a single major league at bat? What makes you think he will immediately be good? Look at Dalbec, Casas… at least Casas was highly touted and he’s not that great

Meanwhile, we have no place to put Grissom or Yoshida, adding to the mess

If devers vacates DH then yoshida is ready to return right then. The only reason yoshida isnt on the 26 man is because his arm isnt up to throwing from the OF.

You bring in a different dh and youve got issues with yoshida, his agent, and, even worse off ever recruiting from npb again.

This site and Chris Cotillo at MassLive have spoken about Yoshi’s value in trade ad nauseum. Here is the bottom line, if he was a free agent no team would sign him for more than 1yr/$4-5 million. Its going to take the Red Sox including either a really good prospect or $40 million to get rid of Yoshi.

This guy is so overrated. Obviously, the injury isn’t his fault, but he barely hits for average when he’s on the field and still people act like he’s a dangerous hitter. It’s another setback. I was wary on trading him because he was half decent (not great) but all bets are off now. I don’t see him being a consistent reliable option for our team. And injuries don’t just occur; there’s usually a reason behind them

The obvious move would be to move Devers to 1B and have Yoshida/whomever DH. The genius move (my idea) is to move Kristian Campbell to 1B. He’s 6’3″, long, athletic, and hits like a true power+contact middle of the order 1B. He could be outstanding as a 1B! Think of Derrek Lee.

Then Roman Anthony can come up to play some outfield with Raefela covering 2B, or better yet SS and Story at 2B. Or Romy at 2B. Or rotate all of them around but have Campbell at 1B primarily.

Ceddane was not very good in the infield on defense. It would be a downgrade. Been there, tried that, lots of errors and the bat suffered.

Campbell would be wasted at 1B. He provides good defense at 2B and a premium bat for that position. You dont mess with a good thing.

How would Campbell be wasted at 1B? I’m not so old fashioned as you as to insist on having a slow fat catcher and 1B. He hits as well as any 1B, is far faster on the basepaths and with some experience could be Gold Glove worthy defensively. Tell me how that is “wasted”.

I’ve watched every game this season. Campbell is not good at 2B. He has dropped a few balls in his glove for no sensible reason and his throws in particular are inconsistent. He spent most of last season in CF. Story is our ideal 2B. His bat is top of both leagues and his less than ideal arm strength at SS is no issue at 2B- he’s the perfect 2B. If you don’t like Rafaela at SS, there’s always Marcelo Mayer, but I’m not as sold on him being ready today as I am with Anthony.

If I were managing a team I’d want speed in every position: 1B, C, and DH included!

I like Campbell to 1B. It can move Mayer into the picture. He’s close to ready it seems. Not sure who’s a better SS, him or Story but the lesser one takes 2B. Also bring Anthony in for CF. Rafaela can sub CF and MI, get plenty of work. Better lineup.

Wong was 1 of 2 in the game coming to the AB you mentioned. Hes freshly off the IL, after a slow start to the season that was a long time ago.

You obviously dont care about damaging a player’s confidence, and, youre playing with fire by risking having no backup C left on the bench. You wouldnt have time for your backup to properly warm up, and, who knows what he had done for game prep to be prepared for the hitters who hed be calling pitches against. This risk doesnt outweigh the rewards, IMO.

Plenty of other opportunities for other players to have come through who didnt as well.

End of the day, Wong is #1 in the C depth chart. Youve got to do the most you can to bolster his confidence and help him find his groove. Theyre going to win and lose as a team, Wong *will* be at the plate in other high pressure situations as the seasom goes on. Its a case of taking the long view rather than hyper focusing kn one AB matchup

He’s a Gold Glove caliber CF who can play SS and 2B and has the potential to hit 20 hr and maybe .270. Plus, while not being adept at stealing bases he can run the bases and is a PR option. That’s worth ~$7m/yr. That doesn’t mean I’d start him over Roman Anthony everyday, because I most certainly would not.

So while this is a wild idea I don’t think it’s terribly far fetched. How about bringing Mayer up to play SS since he’s ready now and moving Story over to 1B. His defensive metrics are down and he’s pretty big for SS anyway. It would keep Story healthier as well. Not to mention he can opt out after this season. I’m sure he sees the writing on the wall, Mayer is kicking the door down to be the SS. Why not make it happen and keep Story’s bat in the lineup? This seems right in Breslow wheelhouse as we all know we have a young and hungry roster that he will refuse to go and get us someone to get over the hump. If all goes well with Story at 1B you pull an ‘04 and trade him at the deadline for something we will need for October.

The lack of depth is what concerns me. This has happened 2 years in a row now. Romy is good at the position, but I think his value is more as a utility player, spotting the regulars.
Old friend Dom Smith might be available, but I think he may be at AAA Scranton.
I think giving Devers 1st shot is an idea, not a great one, but an idea.
IF Story is willing to move, that would mean. Mayer comes up? I like this scenario too.

It was a bad luck injury but he accidentally did it to himself. If you watch the video Casas thought he was out and then when realized he had a chance he stuttered and changed his speed and gate.

I fully expect the Red Sox will ask Devers to start taking grounders and move him to 1B in a couple of weeks. then Anthony comes up and they start rotating the DH position.

This is shaping up to be 1975 part 2 with the team being dictated by how the kids perform. I keep waiting for Story to go on the DL and we see Mayer.

By midseason I can see Mayer at SS, Campbell at 2B, Devers at 1B, Anthony or Abreu rotating in CF with Rafaela and the latter doing the super sub role if he doesn’t start hitting.

Then there’s Brandon Drury, who must be almost ready and maybe has a ‘must be activated by June 1’ clause?

I’m presently recovering from a rupture of both quad tendons. I had surgery January 2 and I’m still nowhere near anything resembling myself prior to the injury. I can’t jump, I can’t run, no squats, stairs are a nightmare. Can’t do my job. Patellar tendon is worse because there’s less blood flow there so it takes even longer to heal. He’s got his work cut out for him. Gonna be a rough go. He definitely will not be back this year and I wouldn’t be shocked if he misses some spring training next year if not into the regular season.
