The Braves signed veteran closer Craig Kimbrel to a minor league deal in the middle of March. He hasn’t been called up to the big leagues yet but it seems that could happen at any time with any club. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Kimbrel’s deal has a clause that Rosenthal refers to as a “rolling opt-out”. This clause means that, if any other club offers him a major league job, Atlanta has to promote him or let him go.
The way Rosenthal describes it, it sounds more like an upward mobility clause than a strict opt-out. With an opt-out clause, a player usually has a specific date wherein he can trigger the clause and become a free agent. With an upward mobility clause, when the player triggers it, it gives teams around the league a chance to give the player a major league roster spot. There’s usually a time frame of 48 hours for such decisions. If any club wants the player, the original signing team then has to decide to call him up or let the claiming team have him.
Semantics aside, what seems to be unique in this case is the “rolling” nature of the clause. Rather than having specific dates mentioned in the contract, it seems that any of the 29 other clubs could trigger the clause at any time by offering Kimbrel a gig in the big leagues. If that happens, Atlanta would then have to decide to call him up or let him go.
That makes it somewhat surprising that Kimbrel isn’t in the majors already. He has thrown 17 innings in the minors this year, mostly at Triple-A but also with a few appearances at Double-A. He has a combined 1.06 earned run average on the year. His 12.5% walk rate is a bit high but he has struck out 32.8% of batters faced and kept 45.7% of balls in play on the ground. A .171 batting average on balls in play isn’t sustainable but his 2.43 FIP suggests he’s still doing quite well when correcting for some regression.
That’s a fairly small sample of work in the minor leagues but Kimbrel also has his lengthy major league track record. He is fifth on the all-time saves leaderboard with 440. He has a 2.59 ERA over 809 2/3 innings, along with a 38.8% strikeout rate and 10.4% walk rate.
More recently, his results have been less consistent, which is why he settled for a minor league deal coming into this year. He was quite shaky in 2019 and 2020, posting ERAs north of 5.00 in both of those seasons. He generally had better results for the 2021-23 campaigns but struggled again in 2024. He posted a 5.33 ERA with the Orioles last year, getting released in September.
Perhaps teams are putting more stock in last year’s struggles in the majors, as opposed to this year’s good results in the minors. His deal also comes with a $2MM base salary if he’s called up. Presumably, that’s prorated, leaving a bit less than $1.3MM to be paid out at this point. That’s relatively small by MLB standards but teams are often reluctant to add money in midseason pickups. Joel Payamps just passed through waivers unclaimed even though he was quite effective in 2023-24. His $2.995MM salary this year might have been a factor, in addition to the fact that his results have backed up.
Whatever the reasons, Kimbrel still doesn’t have a major league opportunity. But given that a number of clubs around the league are dealing with bullpen challenges and pitcher injuries are inevitable, a path could open for him. Given the specifics of this clause, he only needs one of the 30 clubs to bite.

I’m confused as to why he has not been called up yet. He would instantly be their 2nd or 3rd best reliever.
Why haven’t the Dodgers or Phillies offered him a spot?
He could have gotten calls but is waiting to see if there are other opportunities. He also may want to end his career where it started and has a handshake agreement with Atlanta.
Dodgers had him, he stunk up the joint.
Why would the Dodgers or Phillies help out the Braves by forcing them to promote him? The clause doesn’t say anyone can poach Kimbrel. Right now everyone else is probably loving the Braves trotting out a bad bullpen every night. If someone forces the Braves hand though maybe they finally bring him up and it backfires where there’s someone pitching effectively late in the games against Philly instead of De Los Santos.
Did you watch him pitch last year
I’m also very confused. Despite what others on here believe though the Braves are not managed well. The bullpen has been extremely bad.
For those pointing to last season everyone seems to forget he was also quite good for the first half before the meltdown. It’s like no one remembers he had 23 saves and a 2.10 ERA at the AS break. I get that he was very bad down the stretch and the velocity dropped but he’s had better velocity this year and looks effective. There’s almost no argument as to why the Braves haven’t added him other than straight up mismanagement as usual.
Dylan Lee is the only arm that has options left. They’d have to release somebody to create an opening and they think everyone would get claimed if they put them waivers.
Ok??? That’s the mismanagement part. Too busy being afraid to lose the likes of Aaron Bummer to bring up pieces that could nudge the bullpen to being semi respectable.
That’s literally the definition of mismanagement.
Even if Kimbrel is a disaster there’s no gamble here. Staying out as is just gets them eliminated. No way can they believe these relievers would hold up in October if they somehow manage to get there. So you’re going to have to cut people loose and replace with different options at some point to have any real shot.
Mismanagement. All it is. Braves are notoriously bad at managing the team. It’s at the point where after Ozuna leaves this year it will be time to rebuild. Completely wasted those generous contracts to Acuna, Albies, and Riley
@Lou” No way that Kimbrel would “instantly be their 2nd or 3rd best reliever” over Hernandez, Lee, Bummer, or Johnson. He’d be an upgrade over Montero, but his fb velocity has been less than 92 this season.
I didn’t even know Kimbrel had signed, let alone with the Braves. I mean, someone was going to give him a shot, even if it was going to be a minor league deal.
I hope he gets back on track, if only so he can continue to amass saves, he’s closing in on one record, Lee Smith I believe? Jansen is ahead if I’m not mistaken.

Oh my I did! Thanks Old York!
Probably forgot about it since Kimbrel hasn’t been called up by the Braves lol
Pretty sure Trevor Hoffman has the record for most saves if not him then it’s Rivera. Lee Smith is well behind those 2 and Kimbel is closing in on him
Acoss, you heard of this guy named Mariano Rivera? I heard he had a few saves too.
Jansen and Kimbrel are the active leaders, that’s what I meant. No one is catching Mariano.
I know this will scare most Dodgers fans like myself, but with the state of our bullpen, bring him back. Even if it’s for a little while so that we can get some healthy arms back.
I don’t know if things can get much worse then they are. 14 pitchers on the injured list is bonkers.
No thanks, and I think it is 15 now.
I am not sure why Atlanta hasn’t called him up yet. It doesn’t make sense to me.
“I am not sure..doesn’t make sense”..
It’s a clear cut case of service time manipulation. Now that that’s been solved, I’m headed to Dallas to find out who shot J.R.
mlbfan….
I am not sure how many here are old enough to get the J.R. reference lol
Might as well ask “Where’s the beef?” and shout “Dee plane! Dee plane!”
Homey don’t play that
Maybe they would get it if you said who shot Mr burns?
If I understand how the terms tend to be used, opt outs are typically on specific dates while upward mobility clauses require another major league team to offer a place on their major league roster but may not have specific dates. Perhaps Kimbrel’s deal allows him to opt out at any time regardless of whether another team has offered him a major league roster spot.
Rangers need him.
“But why”
Part of the issue with Kimbrel is options. Not many of the Braves pen can be optioned without the risk of losing them. While they all have had their moments, none of them except our closer has really stunk up the joint.
Braves20 – “Creative” IL use if they want to go there to give someone some rest. But Kimbrel being a veteran isnt exactly the guy you yo-yo like that. Why he has the upward mobility agreement only a guy of his status in the game gets
My point exactly.
Whatever the outcome is, you can be certain Snitker will be blamed.

Promote him for christs sake!
At least, he’s not gunna be an expensive mistake anymore….
His numbers in the minors a fine in a vacuum, a veteran Hall of Fame caliber Closer should be dominating minor league hitters. The problem is when he gets to the Majors and isn’t fooling anyone and he gets shelled
Bottom line he’s been a has been living on his past for at least the last two years.
37 and still wants in. Cool.
From the time the Os cut him loose to when the Braves signed him, crickets. Savvy AA steps in? “Craig, recent history shows you are no longer built to pitch a full season. Here’s our offer. Hang out in AAA. We’ll give you just enough work to keep fresh. Down the stretch, you’re up.”
Many of his dominant regular seasons were followed by extremely poor playoffs. His playoff era is almost 2 runs higher than his regular seasons. He might be a H.o.Famer.
