Aaron Judge isn’t in the Yankees’ starting lineup, as manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including YES Network’s Jack Curry, NJ Advance Media’s Max Goodman, and the New York Post’s Joel Sherman) that the superstar is undergoing testing on what Boone described as an “elbow issue.” Judge had some difficulty making throws from right field in yesterday’s 12-5 loss to the Phillies, so the scans were ordered to examine what exactly is wrong with the reigning AL MVP’s right arm.
It appears as though the injury initially took place in Tuesday’s 5-4 win over the Blue Jays, as Judge was seen grimacing after making a throw from deep right field. Boone said Judge seemed to be feeling fine after Thursday’s off-day, yet the discomfort resurfaced during Friday’s game.
More will be known when the results of the tests are in, and Boone didn’t comment on the seriousness of the potential injury. Needless to say, the Yankees and their fans are dearly hoping that Judge’s elbow doesn’t have any structural damage, as a significant injury would be devastating to New York’s postseason chances, let alone its chances of a return trip to the World Series.
Judge is in the midst of yet another incredible season, as he leads the majors in all three slash categories (.342/.449/.711), hits (129), total bases (268), and both fWAR (7.2) and bWAR (6.8). Judge has an unreal 208 wRC+, which would be tied for 15th on the all-time single-season wRC+ list. It would also mark the third time in the last four seasons that Judge has topped the 200 wRC+ mark, following his 206 wRC+ in 2022 and his 219 wRC+ in 2024. Those other two seasons saw Judge win AL MVP honors, and he and the Mariners’ Cal Raleigh are far and away the top two favorites for this year’s award.
A stint on the injured list could throw a wrench into the MVP race, but more importantly, into the Yankees’ hopes of contention. New York’s once-healthy lead in the AL East has been erased by a 14-22 record over its last 36 games, and a subsequent surge by the Blue Jays has elevated Toronto to both the best record in baseball and 5.5-game advantage over the Yankees in the AL East. The Yankees are still the top AL wild card team, though their 56-47 record doesn’t provide much cushion over the Rangers, whose 54-50 record leads the list of American League clubs below the playoff line.
A day-to-day type of injury for Judge would therefore still hamper the Yankees, even if it naturally represents the best-case scenario in the bigger picture. The Bronx Bombers’ next off-day isn’t until August 7, so the team doesn’t even have the benefit of a break in the schedule to give Judge some built-in rest. If the soreness persists for Judge, a 10-day IL stint might be in the cards for precautionary reasons, even if the scans come back clean.
On paper, the Yankees have enough depth to manage this scenario. Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, and Jasson Dominguez become the everyday outfield trio, and Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice split the DH at-bats, with potentially a new right-handed hitting infield type also added to the depth chart to bring more balance to a lineup that would tilt even further to the left if Judge is sidelined. This is probably enough to get the team by over a short-term absence for Judge, and perhaps the one silver lining to the situation is that it came in advance of the trade deadline, so the front office can adjust their buying plans if Judge will indeed miss time.
That said, obviously there’s no way to actually replace a talent like Judge. If he is forced to miss an extended amount of time, it isn’t a reach to suggest that the injury could torpedo New York’s season. While the Yankees have some of the best overall offensive numbers of any team in baseball, Judge is such a singular focal point within the lineup that losing him would suddenly put the spotlight on the more inconsistent nature of New York’s other hitters.
Just DH him and put Stanton in the field!!!
Yikes. Judge and Stanton only have one good elbow between them. It’s an epidemic.
If you read the article, he’s being held out of today’s game for testing. I’m sure the Yankees will DH him if the scans show some minor issue.
There is more than one game left this year so…..
that’s why we have 4 outfielder and Stanton isn’t one of them.
that’s why we have 4 outfielders and Stanton isn’t one of them.
Put Rice in the OF
if you mean jerry i’m all for it
He’s been taking reps at first base for a number of weeks
There goes the season if Judge goes down. Probably injured himself carrying the team.
Might benefit their postseason lineup if he can’t play ;)
There is a case to be made for that.
There will be no postseason lineup if he can’t play. This team is finished.
@pinstripes17
You’d be surprised how well a team can sack up with their star on the shelf.
Seen it many times over.
Not necessarily the end of the world.
As a baseball purist, I truly hope he’s back on the field tomorrow. While yes he hasn’t delivered in the playoffs, how many opportunities would the team have had if he wasn’t leading the charge each season? Baseball is just more enjoyable when players like Judge are batting and fielding.
Braves won a WS without Acuna…..
Unfortunately with how the rest of the team is playing we won’t go far anywhere. I don’t see us getting a WC berth and if we do we can not win a series with the team as constructed…
It’s probably just a tumor.
Nationals won a WS without Harper.
It’s not a tumor.
Dewey- I was thinking the same thing. While I may be a Red Sox fan, as a baseball fan you don’t want to see someone like Judge go down. There are some players who come across as arrogant self-centered jerks, and it would be more difficult to be sorry to see them go down (not that I want anyone to get hurt). Judge is not one of them. Any team would be happy to add him to their team as a role model. Hoping it is minor and he is back soon.
Uncle, did a certain recently traded 3B/DH now 1B come to mind? I too don’t wish anyone ill health but be it arrogance or immaturity, some players it’s just hard to root for if selfishly, they’re not in “your” team. A player like Judge is neither.
That may be true but it’s old and tired material. Try using some new material for your schtick.
As bad as Judge has been in the playoffs, Yankees don’t get there without him. Hopefully it’s a minor IL stint.
Yeah i would’ve thought for sure his back or shoulders would get hurt with all that weight.
Lmao 😆 🤣 😆 🤣 😆 funny
This is just the type of thing the Yankees will use as an excuse to justify their inadequate finish. They’re will start as soon as the season ends with revisionist history, ignoring all the problems that existed up until Judge’s injury.
They’ve effectively blown Judge and Cole’s prime, if this is season-ending.
Clip, I don’t comment too much, but I gotta say that I always appreciate your contributions to the forum. You’re one of the most rational and realistic Yankee fans I’ve ever come across. Hope Judge isn’t down too long. Baseball is better w the big man on the field. Here’s to an entertaining summer and an exciting finish to the AL beast race.
Thanks, I appreciate you saying that, man!
Clip, I almost didn’t give you a thumbs’ up because you’re catching up to me but I did. I too appreciate those that can be objective despite home town partiality. As a Sox fan, I was glad when the seventh inning came around because The Scooter had left the booth to go home. It was before cable and I was stuck watching Channel 11 (PIX) for the Yankee Sox games. Messer and White were more objective.
I don’t know Dewey, I found the Scooter to be entertaining. Sure he was a homer, but he seemed genuine. Living in New Jersey, you get to be around a lot of ballplayers. Many of them are good guys, even those who were cursed by having to play for the Yankees.
Whyhay, he literally lived across the water from the stadium and could have been driven (if he wasn’t). While his stories were sometimes entertaining, his homer attitude made it unlistenable for me. The opposite was true for Bobby Murcer who I found to be a great listen.
the greatest thing that ever happened to brian cashman is the “playoffs are a crapshoot” mantra
They may rally around him, you never know since there’s been plenty of underperformers on the team so far.
As a baseball fan, I hope to see how good he can be and keep going.
As a rival I hope they give him lots of rest for his healths sake.
Definitely a huge hit if this turns into an extended IL stint. Obviously any team is going to suffer if you remove their best player, but the Yankees will disproportionately hurt by it; if you remove Judge their offense drops from 2nd to 14th (by fWAR)
Not a great time for this, but If there is a problem, better to find out now then after the deadline.
Who are they gonna trade for that would come close to replacing him
It’s more about trading away prospects for rental players when hopes of a title are out the window.
You’re not trying to replace him (you can’t). You’re trying to replace the guy who has to replace him. They would need a RH hitter to platoon with Dominguez
I’m sure they are plenty of career .200 postseason hitters that don’t drop routine fly balls in the outfield around.
Spencer Jones
Is there ever a great time for this?
After elimination from the playoffs would, at the very least, be a better time.
But no, there’s no great time.
Ruh roh…
Is it finally “teach Judge 1B” time?
@Joe The season already went down last winter when Yankees refused to trade Gil in the trade for Tucker and signed Bregman for 3B. Also, it didn’t help when Cole went down also.
Worked for Harper, eventually, after he delayed his TJS from being diagnosed in May until after the Phils WS run, in Nov until finally returning in May, missing only 30 games. Would the Yankees allow such an aggressive approach if a similar diagnosis is revealed, and Judge is adamant about playing, like Harper was? We shall see, since the stakes are similarly high!
Worked more recently for Ohtani also……
If Devers can do it, anyone can!
Frankly, that should have already been broached by now. He’s too big to be roaming the outfield approaching his mid-30’s.
Judge playing First Base would be the one guy playing there that could make Frank Thomas look small
His reach would probably rob a decent number of beat out hits
…um check please!
On the positive side, it could be a good chance to see what Jones can do.
Palace intrigue
Big Dumper might win AL MVP then.
Oh man
::fingers crossed::
And elbows
Lol!
At this point I’m just looking forward to all of the “PhD level” takes from WFAN callers in the NY area.
“I know what I’m talkin ova here I got da same injury in freshman year of high school and it prevented me from makin the show!”
Lemme tell ya sumthin’. Playas today are too soft. He’s being paid 40 million freggin’ dollars. Fuhgeddaboudit. It’s all about hittin’ da weights and muscles these days. Whateva happened to chowin’ down hot dogs and throwin’ back a coupla’ beers?! Ya know what I mean? My dog won’t listen to me, my wife wants a divorce, and this season is ovah.
Dad?
Oh shoot, he’s your dad too?
“Nobody wants ta work taday”…
The panic button is looking awfully good in the Bronx… Hope Judge is alright…
If Judge has an extended absence, the Yankees MUST SELL!!! Beli, Grish, Goldy, Weaver, D Williams, Stroman and even Stanton if they get a bite. Reload the farm for next year!!!
Even WITH Judge they weren’t going to get far in the playoffs. This roster doesn’t have winning players. They choke and make bad decisions in big spots.
BTW, I noticed Judge flexing his right hand and grimacing in the outfield a few days ago after he made a nice play.
Good observation. Players get banged up playing baseball.
Anyone watching that game did also, as did Kay……
This Yankees lineup ,as all of them recently, is built to hit home runs , even if it means giving-up defense, but then Yankee fans scream about errors that cost winning performances. All we hear about are Yankee homers, but by implementing this short-sighted line-up building aporoach, THE YANKEES, lose… everyone in baseball has enjoyed watching this “free fall” out of the division lead, but if you lose judge, it’ll be a dogfight for last place for the yanks against the vaunted Orioles !!! Have fun Stankees!!
Well, we’ve heard from the jealous, brain dead 13 year old of the page. Great contribution.
@Floridacoach 2
You’re complaining about the wrong thing. In all of MLB, the Yankees rank:
1st – Runs scored, walks, homeruns, and slugging
2nd – OBP
7th – Batting average
10th – Hits (36 behind the leader)
It’s their pitching.
I can guarantee you there would be no bites on Stanton unless the trade for him comes with all of his remaining salary an old stack of CDs and DVDs and an unopened bag of potato chips.
Not so sure about that. He still has tons of power and now just has 2 years left on his deal with FL paying for some of it. A team who needs DH power and a guy who actually rakes in the playoffs does have SOME value……even if it’s just a salary dump.
Okay, you’re right. Some teams could use a guy who has some power but cant field, runs like a nose tackle, plays about 55% of the games because of recurring health problems and hits about .230 most of the time at this stage of his career. For a desperate team maybe only 80% of the remaining salary would have to be paid. But the CDs DVDs and potato chips would have to remain in the deal.
The Yankees literally cannot sell they have to buy no matter what, the fans will revolt if they sell which means cashman and/or Boone will be fired
You obviously know ZERO about Yankees fans. This isn’t Seattle……we have intelligent baseball fans. We realize that taking a small step back one year when it makes sense will make the team better the following season.
It may be realized. From the posters on this site, it wouldn’t be accepted. A Yankee fan above complained they didn’t sign Bregman for $40mm/year, knowing that they are already in the 110% penalty bracket! Delusional!
Every team has some idiot fans
That’s silly. Judge is a huge part of the team and they have been trending in the wrong direction, but you don’t sell when leading the wildcard. Even if Judge is out the rest of the season.
I’m a Jays fan and love the roll they are on…. But honestly that could come crashing down any time.
Stanton has a full trade clause so unless it’s the Dodgers biting Stanton isn’t going anywhere
It’s prob from the steroids.
Don’t freak Yankees fans I’m joking.
Yeah good thing we didn’t trade Jones and Schlittler for Suarez the poor defensive strikeout prone 34yo rental! Going to need the young kids to step in and fill more holes.
Dont worry guys we got Ryan McMahon
Judge will be fine. We’re not talking about a normal human body here. A little tweak to the bionics in his elbow and he’ll be back in the lineup by Sunday.
His toe begs to differ
You have a lineup built around one player and this is why with all the holes to plug you have to sell rather than trade away the future. The playoffs are a crap shot.
Should be a fun filled day at the stadium with Stroman on the mound and no Judge.
Gonna have to check out the rest of the defense’s elbows, too.
Are Raleigh and Judge running away with the MVP vote or is Kurtz coming full bore after them?
If Judge misses substantial time, it’s Raleigh all the way as a catcher.
Kurtz will be like ‘Silky Sullivan’. Look it up.
The problem with judge getting the MVP over Cal is Cal is setting up the game plan for the SPer along with the pen. He has to watch the batters for the game plan the pitchers for his game plan hitting and then work behind the plate. He gets hit almost every game. People say catching isn’t as hard as it used to be. Looks tough to me. I caught a couple times in LL and said enough of this put me back in the OF.
I don’t want any player to get injured. If they do get hurt hope it is not serious. Now if Judge is hurt I hope it requires surgery and he is out the rest of the year. If they end up about the same as right now Judge will get the award. Mostly because of the NY on his cap. I also want to see the Spankies miss the playoffs. I dislike the team not the players or fans. You guys are like Cowboys fans. You are always going to win the championship even when your team sucks. Mariner fans accept we haven’t been to the WS and figure this isn’t our year. We will be surprised when it finally does happen.
MVCal
the horror… the horror…
Call up Spencer Jones
Not currently on the 40-man roster and he has been dealing with back spasms.
There goes the Yankees dream of making the playoffs lol
There’s already talk of possible TJ. If that’s the case then he and the Yankees can kiss the MVP award and any sort of deep postseason run goodbye 👋
Who’s talking about TJ besides you?
I heard talk of amputation. (The Voices! The Voices!)
Only ten more injuries to key players and you’ll know how the Astros feel.
Are you comparing the Astro’s injuries to the Yankees?
They’ve lost Cole and Schmidt and Gil from there rotation. They’ve lost Stanton pretty much all season and he can’t play the field. They now may have lost Judge. How are the astros injuries much worse? Maybe equivalent but much worse than that? 🛑
I can tell you don’t follow the Astros. No Yordan since May 3rd, Isaac Paredes out with a bad hamstring injury and may not return this season, Jeremy Peña out for the last month with a fractured rib, Jake Meyers out with a calf strain for the past three weeks and may not return this year, Lance McCullers Jr (always hurt, enough said), Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski had Tommy John surgery, Brandon Walter-our new number 3 starter-out with elbow inflammation, Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia haven’t thrown a pitch for us this season, Spencer Arrighetti-a pitcher-broke his thumb during batting practice in Seattle in early April and haven’t had him since. So yeah, join the club as far as the injury bug goes, my friend.
Go bang on a trash can my friend!
Most of those Astro names are unproven players.
You win the award for the stupid statement of the day.
The Mets and Dodgers are going to break the record of pitchers used in a season because of injuries.
Every team in the league has a long injury list. Why do we always get the boo hoo is me whining that their team is plagued?
18 players on the IL, including 8 starting pitchers is why.
The Mets have 18 on the IL also. Get over it.
Well MLB still has Ohtani.
Frustrations with MLB and it’s fawning over large markets aside, I like Judge and wish him the best.
MLB wouldn’t know what to do with a Padres vs Mariners WS.
But, you know what, matchups like that may just be the best thing for MLB.
It depends on what you think is “best”. If 90% of the country having little or no interest in your league’s championship series is “best”, then that would be awesome.
I think MLB wants big names over new teams. Judge-Ohtani last year averaged 15.8 million viewers, nearly a 70% increase of the 9.6 million that watched Rangers-DBacks the year before.
And why wouldn’t you want 70% more people watching? Of course, that is what they want. The more people that watch, the more money that every team makes. This one of those profit deals where MLB and the owners want to make money.
So parry the league down to just the major markets.
NY
LA
PHI
BOSTON
Now you have the four teams that America wants to see.
Every year you can mix and match those four teams.
Market data shows that those four teams will appeal to viewers.
You can now disband the remaining 26 franchises.
As the smaller market teams are irrelevant to MLB they really aren’t essential.
Not sure that we need Boston or Philly, but OK. Chicago and Dallas have larger markets than Philly and Boston is 9th. Why don’t they just get rid of owners that collect more in revenue sharing than they spend in payroll? That could work too so that every team is trying to win instead of just some. Then there would be national interest in the sport instead of just regional like in the NFL.
At least they’re the 4 teams that viewers from those 4 cities want to see.
I could live the rest of my life without ever seeing a Boston or Philly team play!
@lark great points! I totally agree.
If there’s any extended DL/IL stint I’m selling Williams, grisham and goldy immediately. I’d like to keep belli assuming he opts out so I’d ask him first what his preference is.
Didn’t you answer your own question about Belli?
Cashman will never sell……it would most likely cost him his job if he had to admit to Hal face to face what we all already know….most of his trades and acquisitions for the past 5+ seasons have been bad ones….with the Williams trade at the top of the list.
He’s sold before when they traded away Chapman and Miller. Trading away Bellinger for a big prospect return and resigning him in the postseason would be repeating the Chapman move.
It violates the CBA to ask a player if he would accept the QO and then use that as criteria towards making the offer.
Plus if Bellinger is smart, he would just say “Yes. I’m going to accept the beejeezus out of it.” Then what do you do?
There would be no QO regarding Bellinger. He’s signed for $25 million for each of the next two years, with a $5 million club buyout.
They’ll Q.O. him after he opts-out.
I don’t think that’s possible.
Per mlb.com
Opt-Out Impact:
When a player opts out of a contract, they are essentially becoming a free agent at that point. They are no longer under contract with the team and are free to negotiate with other teams.
And therefore prime candidates for a QO
NM. The Cubs QO’d Belli in ’23. If they hadn’t, he would still be eligible.
Nobody ever violates the CBA!!
Boone’s extensive testing will consist of the small rubber reflex testing hammer and some pickup basketball games.
Yankees trade binge coming?
I hope not because having players like Judge actually playing makes the whole sport better, but if it’s aserious injury that plus being 5.5 back already might make a GM want to take risks this season and stock up for future both. Can see buying and selling to a higher degree than anticipated.
Did they keep the receipt for Ryan McMahon?
Injured pointing at Volpe
Haha, especially when they said, “who the hell just threw that terrible ball to first?!”
He was pointing at the entire infield if that was the case
If he’s out long term sell sell sell. If he’s now the every day DH down the stretch, sell with an intent to still out a competitive product out there and with the idea to set up the roster for next season.
Both scenarios they should sell!
Grisham, Goldy, Williams, and bullpen arm who is not apart of the plan next season.,,,
Salary relief is about all the return you could expect for those players.
Grisham is not salary relief? Neither is Devin Williams. If they put both on the market they will definitely get a prospect return for teams needing a starting cf and closer.
I was surprised to read that Judge had played every game thus far. Given his injury history, height, weight, build and age, i would have guessed Judge would get the occasional day off beyond 20 games at DH. That said, did he PH on his days off?
Second time this season
If he goes on the IL for a significant amount of time then the Yankees are sunk. McMahon deal barely moved the needle and they may hesitate to do something big if Judge goes down for a month or more
Price Tag for Robert Jr just went Up
Nope! It is unchanged, and the price for many trade targets just went down. The Yankees will not invest prospect capital into a roster that does not include Judge. If Judge is unable to go for the rest of the season, then the Yankees are sellers and there is one less team bidding up Robert Jr. and others.
even if he’s out for the season don’t think it changes the deadline approach. maybe jones is a little more untouchable but their needs remain the same: a starter and multiple bullpen arms. jasson was always going to have to step up for them to go anywhere
I know we are leading the WC standings, but if Judge is out for a while if not the season maybe it’s time to think about selling. Why empty the farm to get swept in the WC round assuming we even make it. This team is playing like it knows it doesn’t belong in the playoff hunt right now.
I’ve been saying this for weeks.
The yankees season is on life support even with a healthy Judge. They still need a couple of starters, 2 or 3 relievers and a strong right handed bat. And any trades should be for players with term. Trading for a rental player would be a waste of young talent. Without a massive injection of talent, this team does not have a realistic chance of going far in the post season.
If Judge goes down for any extended length of time the Yankees season is over. Judge is the Hemi engine that makes the Yankees go and they’ve struggled with him lately, without him will not be pretty
Ooof. Tough week for Booney.
Yankees seemingly getting pummelled by everything. No good.
