Aaron Judge Undergoing Testing For “Elbow Issue”

By Mark Polishuk | July 26, 2025 at 10:57am CDT

Aaron Judge isn’t in the Yankees’ starting lineup, as manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including YES Network’s Jack Curry, NJ Advance Media’s Max Goodman, and the New York Post’s Joel Sherman) that the superstar is undergoing testing on what Boone described as an “elbow issue.”  Judge had some difficulty making throws from right field in yesterday’s 12-5 loss to the Phillies, so the scans were ordered to examine what exactly is wrong with the reigning AL MVP’s right arm.

It appears as though the injury initially took place in Tuesday’s 5-4 win over the Blue Jays, as Judge was seen grimacing after making a throw from deep right field.  Boone said Judge seemed to be feeling fine after Thursday’s off-day, yet the discomfort resurfaced during Friday’s game.

More will be known when the results of the tests are in, and Boone didn’t comment on the seriousness of the potential injury.  Needless to say, the Yankees and their fans are dearly hoping that Judge’s elbow doesn’t have any structural damage, as a significant injury would be devastating to New York’s postseason chances, let alone its chances of a return trip to the World Series.

Judge is in the midst of yet another incredible season, as he leads the majors in all three slash categories (.342/.449/.711), hits (129), total bases (268), and both fWAR (7.2) and bWAR (6.8).  Judge has an unreal 208 wRC+, which would be tied for 15th on the all-time single-season wRC+ list.  It would also mark the third time in the last four seasons that Judge has topped the 200 wRC+ mark, following his 206 wRC+ in 2022 and his 219 wRC+ in 2024.  Those other two seasons saw Judge win AL MVP honors, and he and the Mariners’ Cal Raleigh are far and away the top two favorites for this year’s award.

A stint on the injured list could throw a wrench into the MVP race, but more importantly, into the Yankees’ hopes of contention.  New York’s once-healthy lead in the AL East has been erased by a 14-22 record over its last 36 games, and a subsequent surge by the Blue Jays has elevated Toronto to both the best record in baseball and 5.5-game advantage over the Yankees in the AL East.  The Yankees are still the top AL wild card team, though their 56-47 record doesn’t provide much cushion over the Rangers, whose 54-50 record leads the list of American League clubs below the playoff line.

A day-to-day type of injury for Judge would therefore still hamper the Yankees, even if it naturally represents the best-case scenario in the bigger picture.  The Bronx Bombers’ next off-day isn’t until August 7, so the team doesn’t even have the benefit of a break in the schedule to give Judge some built-in rest.  If the soreness persists for Judge, a 10-day IL stint might be in the cards for precautionary reasons, even if the scans come back clean.

On paper, the Yankees have enough depth to manage this scenario.  Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, and Jasson Dominguez become the everyday outfield trio, and Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice split the DH at-bats, with potentially a new right-handed hitting infield type also added to the depth chart to bring more balance to a lineup that would tilt even further to the left if Judge is sidelined.  This is probably enough to get the team by over a short-term absence for Judge, and perhaps the one silver lining to the situation is that it came in advance of the trade deadline, so the front office can adjust their buying plans if Judge will indeed miss time.

That said, obviously there’s no way to actually replace a talent like Judge.  If he is forced to miss an extended amount of time, it isn’t a reach to suggest that the injury could torpedo New York’s season.  While the Yankees have some of the best overall offensive numbers of any team in baseball, Judge is such a singular focal point within the lineup that losing him would suddenly put the spotlight on the more inconsistent nature of New York’s other hitters.

If you read the article, he’s being held out of today’s game for testing. I’m sure the Yankees will DH him if the scans show some minor issue.

You’d be surprised how well a team can sack up with their star on the shelf.

As a baseball purist, I truly hope he’s back on the field tomorrow. While yes he hasn’t delivered in the playoffs, how many opportunities would the team have had if he wasn’t leading the charge each season? Baseball is just more enjoyable when players like Judge are batting and fielding.

Dewey- I was thinking the same thing. While I may be a Red Sox fan, as a baseball fan you don’t want to see someone like Judge go down. There are some players who come across as arrogant self-centered jerks, and it would be more difficult to be sorry to see them go down (not that I want anyone to get hurt). Judge is not one of them. Any team would be happy to add him to their team as a role model. Hoping it is minor and he is back soon.

Uncle, did a certain recently traded 3B/DH now 1B come to mind? I too don’t wish anyone ill health but be it arrogance or immaturity, some players it’s just hard to root for if selfishly, they’re not in “your” team. A player like Judge is neither.

This is just the type of thing the Yankees will use as an excuse to justify their inadequate finish. They’re will start as soon as the season ends with revisionist history, ignoring all the problems that existed up until Judge’s injury.

They’ve effectively blown Judge and Cole’s prime, if this is season-ending.

Clip, I almost didn’t give you a thumbs’ up because you’re catching up to me but I did. I too appreciate those that can be objective despite home town partiality. As a Sox fan, I was glad when the seventh inning came around because The Scooter had left the booth to go home. It was before cable and I was stuck watching Channel 11 (PIX) for the Yankee Sox games. Messer and White were more objective.

I don’t know Dewey, I found the Scooter to be entertaining. Sure he was a homer, but he seemed genuine. Living in New Jersey, you get to be around a lot of ballplayers. Many of them are good guys, even those who were cursed by having to play for the Yankees.

Whyhay, he literally lived across the water from the stadium and could have been driven (if he wasn’t). While his stories were sometimes entertaining, his homer attitude made it unlistenable for me. The opposite was true for Bobby Murcer who I found to be a great listen.

Definitely a huge hit if this turns into an extended IL stint. Obviously any team is going to suffer if you remove their best player, but the Yankees will disproportionately hurt by it; if you remove Judge their offense drops from 2nd to 14th (by fWAR)

Worked for Harper, eventually, after he delayed his TJS from being diagnosed in May until after the Phils WS run, in Nov until finally returning in May, missing only 30 games. Would the Yankees allow such an aggressive approach if a similar diagnosis is revealed, and Judge is adamant about playing, like Harper was? We shall see, since the stakes are similarly high!

This Yankees lineup ,as all of them recently, is built to hit home runs , even if it means giving-up defense, but then Yankee fans scream about errors that cost winning performances. All we hear about are Yankee homers, but by implementing this short-sighted line-up building aporoach, THE YANKEES, lose… everyone in baseball has enjoyed watching this “free fall” out of the division lead, but if you lose judge, it’ll be a dogfight for last place for the yanks against the vaunted Orioles !!! You’re complaining about the wrong thing. In all of MLB, the Yankees rank:

1st – Runs scored, walks, homeruns, and slugging
        2nd – OBP
        7th – Batting average
        10th – Hits (36 behind the leader)

        It’s their pitching.

The problem with judge getting the MVP over Cal is Cal is setting up the game plan for the SPer along with the pen. He has to watch the batters for the game plan the pitchers for his game plan hitting and then work behind the plate. He gets hit almost every game. People say catching isn’t as hard as it used to be. Looks tough to me. I caught a couple times in LL and said enough of this put me back in the OF.

I don’t want any player to get injured. If they do get hurt hope it is not serious. Now if Judge is hurt I hope it requires surgery and he is out the rest of the year. If they end up about the same as right now Judge will get the award. Mostly because of the NY on his cap. I also want to see the Spankies miss the playoffs. I dislike the team not the players or fans. You guys are like Cowboys fans. You are always going to win the championship even when your team sucks. Mariner fans accept we haven’t been to the WS and figure this isn’t our year. We will be surprised when it finally does happen.

Are you comparing the Astro’s injuries to the Yankees?
They’ve lost Cole and Schmidt and Gil from there rotation. They’ve lost Stanton pretty much all season and he can’t play the field. They now may have lost Judge. How are the astros injuries much worse? Maybe equivalent but much worse than that? 🛑

I can tell you don’t follow the Astros. No Yordan since May 3rd, Isaac Paredes out with a bad hamstring injury and may not return this season, Jeremy Peña out for the last month with a fractured rib, Jake Meyers out with a calf strain for the past three weeks and may not return this year, Lance McCullers Jr (always hurt, enough said), Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski had Tommy John surgery, Brandon Walter-our new number 3 starter-out with elbow inflammation, Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia haven’t thrown a pitch for us this season, Spencer Arrighetti-a pitcher-broke his thumb during batting practice in Seattle in early April and haven’t had him since. So yeah, join the club as far as the injury bug goes, my friend.

Take lindor, baty, and Soto out of your lineup and see how good you are. We’ve lost Peña, Alvarez and paredes. That’s the equivalent of just what’s happening in the lineup, not to mention the pitching staff. Yeah you have 18 but seriously, who is the best player on that list? Probably Jesse winker? Mets fans would crap their pants if they actually had the injuries we’ve had.

    Well MLB still has Ohtani.

Frustrations with MLB and it’s fawning over large markets aside, I like Judge and wish him the best.

MLB wouldn’t know what to do with a Padres vs Mariners WS.

But, you know what, matchups like that may just be the best thing for MLB.

It depends on what you think is “best”. If 90% of the country having little or no interest in your league’s championship series is “best”, then that would be awesome.

I think MLB wants big names over new teams. Judge-Ohtani last year averaged 15.8 million viewers, nearly a 70% increase of the 9.6 million that watched Rangers-DBacks the year before.

And why wouldn’t you want 70% more people watching? Of course, that is what they want. The more people that watch, the more money that every team makes. This one of those profit deals where MLB and the owners want to make money.

So parry the league down to just the major markets.

        NY
        LA
        PHI
        BOSTON

Now you have the four teams that America wants to see.

Every year you can mix and match those four teams.

Market data shows that those four teams will appeal to viewers.

You can now disband the remaining 26 franchises.

As the smaller market teams are irrelevant to MLB they really aren’t essential.

Not sure that we need Boston or Philly, but OK. Chicago and Dallas have larger markets than Philly and Boston is 9th. Why don’t they just get rid of owners that collect more in revenue sharing than they spend in payroll? That could work too so that every team is trying to win instead of just some. Then there would be national interest in the sport instead of just regional like in the NFL.

It violates the CBA to ask a player if he would accept the QO and then use that as criteria towards making the offer.

Plus if Bellinger is smart, he would just say “Yes. I’m going to accept the beejeezus out of it.” Then what do you do?

          Per mlb.com

          Opt-Out Impact:
When a player opts out of a contract, they are essentially becoming a free agent at that point. They are no longer under contract with the team and are free to negotiate with other teams.

I hope not because having players like Judge actually playing makes the whole sport better, but if it’s aserious injury that plus being 5.5 back already might make a GM want to take risks this season and stock up for future both. Can see buying and selling to a higher degree than anticipated.

    Both scenarios they should sell!

Okay, you’re right. Some teams could use a guy who has some power but cant field, runs like a nose tackle, plays about 55% of the games because of recurring health problems and hits about .230 most of the time at this stage of his career. For a desperate team maybe only 80% of the remaining salary would have to be paid. But the CDs DVDs and potato chips would have to remain in the deal.

Nope! It is unchanged, and the price for many trade targets just went down. The Yankees will not invest prospect capital into a roster that does not include Judge. If Judge is unable to go for the rest of the season, then the Yankees are sellers and there is one less team bidding up Robert Jr. and others.

I know we are leading the WC standings, but if Judge is out for a while if not the season maybe it’s time to think about selling. Why empty the farm to get swept in the WC round assuming we even make it. This team is playing like it knows it doesn’t belong in the playoff hunt right now.

That’s silly. Judge is a huge part of the team and they have been trending in the wrong direction, but you don’t sell when leading the wildcard. Even if Judge is out the rest of the season.

The yankees season is on life support even with a healthy Judge. They still need a couple of starters, 2 or 3 relievers and a strong right handed bat. And any trades should be for players with term. Trading for a rental player would be a waste of young talent. Without a massive injection of talent, this team does not have a realistic chance of going far in the post season.
