The Yankees made one of deadline season’s biggest moves so far, acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from Colorado for a pair of pitching prospects. That addressed their most glaring need on the position player side. It nevertheless might not be their only acquisition on the dirt.
Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports that the Yankees are looking to add an infielder who can hit from the right side. Kirschner specifically adds that New York is interested in switch-hitting Twins utilityman Willi Castro. He also floats Washington’s Amed Rosario as a player whom the front office has liked.
They’re two of a number of potential options. Old friends Thairo Estrada (Rockies) and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (Pirates) are short-term pieces on bad teams. The A’s Luis Urías and Baltimore’s Ramón Urías (Luis’ older brother) should each be available. The Angels could listen on switch-hitting rentals Yoán Moncada and Luis Rengifo.
Castro is the best of that group — and consequently, the one who should draw the most interest from various teams. He entered play tonight with a .257/.346/.429 slash line with 10 homers across 319 plate appearances. Castro has been a slightly above-average hitter in three consecutive seasons. He’d be a particular boost versus left-handed pitching, against whom he’s hitting .284/.341/.519. His .246/.348/.392 slash against righties is closer to average but hardly unplayable.
Minnesota is four games below .500 and five games out of a Wild Card spot. They’re open to offers on rentals. The 28-year-old Castro is playing on a $6.4MM salary for his final arbitration season. He’s not a great defensive player at any spot, but he’s able to move between second base, third base, and the corner outfield positions. He has plenty of shortstop experience as well, though he shouldn’t be playing there regularly.
If Castro fits the superutility mold, Rosario is more of a short-side platoon bat. He hits lefties well, including a .299/.333/.483 showing this season. He makes contact against right-handed pitching but almost never walks and doesn’t hit for power off righties. Rosario was a shortstop earlier in his career but is now mostly limited to second/third base. He’s playing on a $2MM salary and is an impending free agent.
The Yanks will give the majority of playing time between second and third base to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and McMahon. They each hit from the left side. Chisholm is a career .224/.286/.354 hitter against southpaws. McMahon has a lifetime .231/.307/.378 line without the platoon advantage. Oswald Peraza is their right-handed complement for now, but he hasn’t shown he can hit MLB pitching of either handedness. He’s a superior defender to Castro and Rosario but hasn’t provided anything with the bat. Peraza is out of options, so the Yankees would need to expose him to waivers before they could send him to the minors. If they acquire a right-handed hitting infielder, that’d almost certainly squeeze him off the roster.
Kirschner adds that the Yankees — like virtually every contender — are also pursuing bullpen help. He lists Pittsburgh’s David Bednar and the Minnesota trio of Jhoan Durán, Griffin Jax and Danny Coulombe among the presumably dozens of bullpen options whom the Yanks are considering.
Durán and Jax are each questionable to move; the Twins are reportedly demanding multiple top prospects for either controllable late-game weapon. Bednar, who is playing on a $5.9MM salary and arbitration-eligible for one more season, is likely to go but would require a big return in his own right. Coulombe would come with the lowest prospect cost of that group. He’s a rental playing on a $3MM deal. Pittsburgh and Minnesota are surely getting calls from a number of teams on those pitchers (as well as the likes of Dennis Santana and Brock Stewart).
The Yankees should have just traded for IKF or Rosario to begin with. Now, they have been stuck with the Colorado guy for several years.
Hey what in the world did the Colorado guy ever do to you? Give ‘em a chance. McMahon is great with the glove and will hit a little also.
I’m convinced you aren’t actually Yankees fan and just troll every move they make.
I can’t believe the Mets beat the Yankees twice on a Soto.
:p
Two years / two months
How about Jose Iglesias SD for a Left Fielder
Coulombe would be a perfect fit
They need 2-3 relievers. Even the trustworthy guys (Williams, Weaver, Hill and Cruz) are being overexposed.
……and Hamilton, Loáisiga and Mark
Leiter Jr are as worthless as dog doo.
Yanks desperately need relief pitching. They are scoring 5 or more runs a game. Look at tonight against the Phils, their bullpen pitched 4 innings and gave up 10 runs. Weaver not as good as last year, Hamilton has been declining after 2023. Most of these guys are fired and not good
Agreed. The hitting in July has not been the issue.
Yankees need to acquire an innings eating starter. I would be checking in on Merrill Kelly…
Tbh we need more of an impact guy. And if that, I’d go with Keller above Kelly.
Merrill Kelly is literally a better player that also has pitched well in the playoffs
Very similar players, I just like Keller more, can go deeper in games.
Cease and Iglesias for?
Adding Iglesias would considerably lower the return. I like the idea of getting Cease though. Problem is that the Yankees don’t really have a leftfielder to trade for a rental starter. Jones is too much and Pereira isn’t enough. I wouldn’t trade from the major league outfielders.
I don’t understand why McMahon is such a good get …sure he is better than what they have at 3B now. But he was hitting at coors field and his numbers never stood out. Maybe Zona is asking too much for Suarez but he was the guy to get for a WS push IMO
His batted ball profile favors pull side flyballs. As long as he doesn’t get too tempted YS is made for his swing. Suarez isn’t great with the glove and his righty pull tendencies are a bad fit.
A writer theorized mcmahon could do well, once away from constantly re-adjusting to altitude’s effects on ball spin, etc .. home vs road at-bats
This was the early history of lemahieu’s yankee successful years, before he’s fallen back
Mcmahon could be a repeat
I would not assume that McMahon’s numbers will drop just because he’s leaving Coors Field. Most lefties’ numbers improve when they move to Yankee Stadium. That stadium was built for lefties, so the ballpark factor might be a push.
They need too much to make a deep run. Do a small sale and retool for next year. Otherwise, they are wasting prospects for nothing (unless they get longterm pieces)..
Most of these guys would fit on the M’s too, so should be a good deadline
Why would the Orioles trade a former Gold Glover with two years of affordable control to a division rival? And who would the Yankees even be able to offer? With THATfarmer system?
Yankees farm system is good, especially when you check the numbers. Just because BA doesn’t slobber over every single guy with a low 800 ops like they do Boston, doesn’t mean those guys can’t play,
Brother why are we bringing up politics?
Yankees have had enough of the kids for now. Go get me Castro as a super sub.
Ohhh buddy…. I LOVE the idea of adding Castro to this IF!
Enables a lot of late game maneuvers. He’s got speed too
Boone never uses speed in his game plan so that’s a useless tool in Yankeeland…
So one of the big Yankee fails is in the development of players in their minor league teams as MLB ready ballplayers….why would you be so enamored with Castro when the Yankees already have players who can move around the infield and possess speed that their manager does not let them use……of course they all hit at or around .200, but Castro isn’t exactly Babe Ruth either……trading assets for guys that really aren;’t going to move the needle any further towards the playoffs or pushing them further in the playoffs is the wrong move…..which Cash is pretty famous for over the past 4-5 seasons….
Brandon Donovan from St Louis would be the guy to target. Castro is a very poor man’s version of Brandon Donovan.
Maybe so, but if you read my comment to Yankee Clipper, is Donovan going to propel them into the playoffs with the complexion of the team as it now stands…..doubt it and of course then what would St. Louis want in return….more asset waste by Cash……
Rocky, I understand what you’re saying, and they still have a ton of work to do, but at least Castro is a switch-hitting, defensively sound guy, that breaks the TTO mold that Cashman always acquires. We need ballplayers, like Bellinger, to make this team better.
And I agree, Donovan is THE guy, but I’m not sure Cashman has the stomach to part with the players needed to get him.
And also, the Yankees desperately need BP help. They’re in dire straits, but Castro (or even better, Donovan) is a much better acquisition for this team than McMahon, imho.
ISOB: YES! I wholeheartedly agree with you about Donovan. He’s probably my number 1 if I were to choose a UTL guy for the Yankees.
Going to make 16 mil the next 2 seasons. Not a smart move
Wvsteve They have the money literally sitting around for him. Hicks 10 million comes off the books and the Marlins 5 million subsidy for Stanton kicks in. They have had a black hole of suck ay 3rd for the last four years. This guy can field and he’ll pop 25 bombs per season with YS as his home. He’s a decent player and will help.
Yankees are 3rd place AL east.
You do realize the Yankees are the one team who has more revenue than the Dodgers, right?
Maybe get some defense minded guys too
3B was the least of their problems at least we had a glove there and the offense was doing fine. The bullpen is a disaster. I hate the way he uses weaver in the cruz/leiter role asking him to pitch out of jams when he’s not a big strikeout pitcher or even a ground ball pitcher. The only reason it makes any sense to use him there is factoring in how pathetic the pen is beyond weaver williams and hill.
Colorado guy did nothing for me. However, why is Steinbrenner willing to add a bunch of salary now when he could have gotten someone better last winter.
While I agree with your assessment that the bullpen needs incredible pitching help… to say that 3B was the least of their problems is imo not true. Peraza and Vivas were fumbling at both the plate and the field constantly missing routine plays. Now you bring in McMahon who is a better hitter than either of those two options .. and is GG defense… GG defense that is left handed and has range that consistently covers two extra steps to the left. That means less heroic attempts and epic failures from Volpe because parts of his range are covered. Add in that McMahon can add in some pop in the bottom half of the lineup and has actually has some baserunning skills… I’d say he fills a lot of needs for the Yankees and only cost us 2 prospects that aren’t any higher than Double A ball and some salary we can afford. We definitely can’t stop there and need some major bullpen help .. but we don’t have to worry about not having the prospects to trade.
Righty hitting utility infielder is like the 4th need right now. This team needs multiple arms for the pen and a starter would be nice. Trade Escarra for a pen arm or two and possibly deal Grisham to get less left handed and get more pitching.
Escarra is one of the leagues best pitch framers and think where the Yanks would be without Grishs defense in center and his offense so far….trading strength won’t solve what this team needs…..
Metrics are down on Grish’s D the last 2 years and Bellinger has been adequate in Cf. After years of neglecting lefties this years team is too far left leaning (even Dominguez as a switch is much better lefty). I love Grisham he’s cool but you gotta give to get. I’m not losing sleep over Escarra. Nice story and possibly a very good lefty catcher in his own right but the team loves Wells…
Not going to happen….Cash would have to include Schlitt…Jones…and Lombard to even start that conversation and by doing that would doom them for the next several seasons….A trade from the major league roster using Dominguez as bait might work….but then your committing to Belli…Grish..and Judge across the outfield for now….Yankee farm isn’t very deep…best play is to pick up a reliever and hope the current roster gets hot….ride them into the off-season and reconstruct….
Urias and Sears for Jones
They are in a tough spot right now. This is not the team that you should be looking to invest all your assets in, there’s simply just too many holes and parts put in places that they don’t fit. But at the same time Judge isn’t getting any younger. Who knows how many MVP seasons he has left in him moving forward, maybe you have to pay significant prices right now in the hopes everything eventually starts coming together. For such a high payroll (even excluding Coles money), Cashman built an incredibly flawed roster.
NYY bullpen is a an absolute mess ..they need a at least 2 RPers who don’t pitch to contact .. OK with RM trade just as long as he’s not a left handed hitter DJ … Yankees need to get a SPer who can get into the 6-7 innings
NYY should’ve tried making a run at Maikel Garcia ( KC ) he would’ve solved their IF need .. 25 years old can play all over the field and has a solid bat …
A Seth Lugo/ M Garcia trade would’ve helped the cause
Yankee fans would probably be pissed if they traded for Luis Urías and Sean Newcomb from the A’s, but both of those players would help and come fairly cheap
