On the heels of an exciting All-Star game, here are three things to keep an eye on around the baseball world while the league is on break:
1. Draft pick signings:
This year’s iteration of the MLB draft wrapped up earlier this week, and that means it’s time for clubs around the league to work on signing their picks. The Mariners have reportedly already reached an agreement with third-overall pick Kade Anderson, and several reports of lower-level pick signings have begun to emerge as well. Teams figure to spend the next few weeks hard at work to sign their drafted players, as the deadline to strike a deal with members of this year’s class is on July 28. Teams aren’t just negotiating with players they drafted, however. Undrafted free agents have also begun signing, with 22 of the league’s 30 teams having already signed at least one such player according to Baseball America.
2. Will Robertson sign somewhere?
It’s not often that big league-caliber free agents of note remain unsigned into July, but that’s exactly the situation closer David Robertson has found himself in. After not signing during an offseason where he held firm on his asking price, Robertson has begun throwing for teams and is getting recent interest from multiple clubs. Robertson could be an attractive addition to a contending club looking for bullpen help given that he would cost nothing but money, though missing the first half of the season could come with consequences in terms of his performance. Still, bringing in a player with a career 2.91 ERA and 177 saves across 16 years in the majors without having to surrender prospect capital in trade could be a very attractive option for some clubs in contention that either have weak farm systems or are hesitant about prices on the relief market this summer.
3. Could the Twins’ impending sale impact their deadline decisions?
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred spoke to reporters about a variety of topics yesterday, and included in those comments was a belief on Manfred’s part that the Pohlad family would be successful in their efforts to sell the Twins in due time. With the league’s commissioner expressing confidence in public that a sale will go through just two weeks before MLB’s trade deadline, it’s not hard to wonder if the Twins’ deadline approach could be impacted by the looming specter of a sale on at least some level. That could manifest in multiple ways. President of baseball operations Derek Falvey has said he’s not focused on selling, and the Twins are just two games under .500 and four games back in the Wild Card hunt. A potential sale could impact the team’s willingness to take on additional money, however, and it could well have some influence on how far back Minnesota needs to be in the standings before selling off some veteran pieces.
I wonder why Anderson a projected top 1 or 2 pick settled so quickly for so much below the slot value. The Mariners already received an A+ for the pick but it would be a higher grade after the signing if there was anything higher. Great pick!
Dipoto does a lot of good things with the financial handcuffs ownership puts on the franchise. The M’s could do much worse at the top of the front office. No front office is perfect obviously, but overall he has overseen the buildup of an enviable farm. Now to translate that into a World Series…
Maybe something in his medicals
TJ in ’22
Anderson may see a way to get onto the playoff roster. Going from College World Series winner in 2025 just a month ago to the World Series would be nice on a resume.
Mariners could use a dominant lefty in the pen.
There was a lot of speculation that before the draft whoever went in the first 3-5 would be underslot. A weaker class up top and rising slot values both contribute. Only 400K behind what Skenes got. 200k behind Crews. And no where near as good as them coming out of LSU. Plus a red flag in injuries. Will be interesting to see the rest of bonus values.
I expected Shane Sdao to get picked up quick. A left handed relief pitcher with 10.2 K/9 and 1.7 BB/9. 2.96 era in 2024. He missed all of last year with TJ surgery. A 2 pitch lefty in the pen… He has potential.
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45
He announced he’s returning to school, otherwise he probably would have been picked
I thought most draft picks have a tentative verbal agreement with a club before being selected. Baseball draft so different than the other sports. Thus Overslot spending on a guy happens in baseball and it rarely happens in other leagues. Look at NFL where nearly all 2nd round picks are holding out for guaranteed money because 1 guy got it, then a second and other owners have said why and now all are at a standstill
Nope they don’t.. Most teams have an idea of what it would take to sign guys (above or below slot), but not a lot of verbal agreements.
The Pohlads are a joke. Glad they are selling
Will Robertson was already picked up by the White Sox /s
Disappointed with the NL pitchers. You had a 6-0 lead and blew it.
If the Twins can take the series against the Dodgers I think they should buy. Yeah their core has holes in it but these are most of the same guys who beat Toronto in a series a couple years ago. Get a bat, preferably Naylor, and make a run at it. It’s not like any of the teams they’re chasing have more talent than the Twins do. Crazier things happen than making up a few games on Seattle
Robertson reportedly wanted a $15 million guarantee. I didn’t see anything on what he turned down dollar wise. I would guess the best he can get for a half season is $5 M.
I would also argue there are potential benefits for a pitcher of his age to throw less and be fresher for the end of the season. I think Clemens and maybe Rich Hill did something like that though I can’t think of a reliever as a comp. It could backfire as well.
I see the Yankees will be bargain hunting again at the deadline. Can’t wait for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino part 2 just so Cashman can say he did something and avoid actually trading something valuable that another team wants. His incessant need and desire to never ‘lose’ a trade and be risk averse is ruining this club. Ffs I wish him and boone would get the Nationals treatment and package them both together and send em to Cancun. “You know what will really help the Yankees win a WS this year? A 40 year old reliever.” Insanity
