The Tigers announced that right-hander Tyler Owens has been designated for assignment. The move opens up roster space for Rafael Montero, acquired earlier tonight in a trade with the Braves.
The 24-year-old Owens made his Major League debut this season, appearing in three games with Detroit and allowing one earned run over three total innings. He also walked three batters during his cups of coffee in the Show, which continues the severe control problems that have arisen for Owens this year at Triple-A Toledo. A 14.8% walk rate over 30 innings with the Mud Hens has been a big reason behind Owens’ 5.40 ERA in his first taste of Triple-A ball, and his 19% strikeout rate is also pretty modest.
Owens has been on Toledo’s injured list due to a hip injury for the last two weeks, and he’ll now head into DFA limbo for the first time in his career. A 13th-round pick for the Braves in the 2019 draft, Owens was dealt to the Rangers prior to the 2024 season, and was then traded to Detroit along with Liam Hicks almost exactly a year ago in the deal that sent Carson Kelly to Texas.
One schlub out, one schlub in.
Still a worse team than when the season started. Hope they make some real moves tomorrow.
They were projected to be around a .500 team coming into the season. I think they’ve done better, not worse, than that no? Sometimes the best trades are no trades. Melton looks like he has the stuff. Curious to see who comes up in September as well. I don’t think Harris done, but neither of the two moves he’s made have been something to complain about.
It would be nice if Harris did something to get us excited about, though.
You don’t know how baseball works do you? The goal is the win a WS. The last time the Tigers won was 1984 lol. They are having a dream year. This is win you go all out to win it. You don’t wait until the top prospects in the organization make the team. Skubal will be on a different team by the time their real prospects are ready to make their debut and half of them will suck.
Hate to have been a pitcher DFAed for Montero!
Track.record of.SO’s.
Trade Flaherty and Torres in this market.
Return s/b HUGE!
Right. They are trading Flaherty or Torres. They will let them both walk before they get anything of value for them.
smh…trade playoff tested players on a first place team that are on expiring contracts…these are what you trade for not trade away….
That’s exactly why you would trade them. The Tiger should take advantage of the situation and expect a tremendous return. I expect they can still win……injury or trade.
