Despite weeks of rumors, it looks as though the Pirates won’t be trading Mitch Keller before tomorrow’s trade deadline, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal writes. It would take “a dramatic shift” in the team’s thinking for Keller to be moved at this point.
Several contenders (including the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Mets, Yankees, and Cubs) were publicly linked to Keller in recent days, yet it appears as though none of these suitors or others were able to meet what was known to be a very high asking price for the right-hander’s services. One rival executive told Rosenthal that it didn’t seem like the Pirates were willing to explore a Keller deal too deeply, and thus ceased talks.
This stance from the Bucs front office tracks with the most recent reporting on Keller, as Rosenthal and Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette each wrote within the last few days that the Pirates were becoming increasingly disinclined to trade the starter. Pirates GM Ben Cherington told Hiles and other reporters last weekend that the team valued Keller’s “leadership” and “proven performance.”
“If we’re going to be better in 2026, we need more of that, not less. We would only contemplate giving up something that’s seemingly more proven if we really believe that they give us a better chance to be better by next year,” Cherington said.
Now in his seventh MLB season, Keller has a 3.69 ERA and 6.2% walk rate over 127 innings and 22 starts for Pittsburgh. His 18.8% strikeout rate is his lowest over a full season and he has correspondingly low chase and whiff rates, plus Keller’s fastball averages a modest 94mph. His heater does have plenty of spin on it, however, and Keller’s combination of good control, durability, and non-quantitative value as a veteran leader in a young clubhouse makes him a logical player to keep as the Bucs try to break out of their lengthy rebuilding phase.
The club invested in Keller as a face of its next phase of contention by signing him to a multi-year extension prior to the 2024 season. Keller still has $54.5MM owed to him from 2026-28, as well as the rest of his $15MM salary for the remainder of the 2025 campaign. This is a very pricey commitment by the Pirates’ standards, and since the team is staring at another losing season, there was some thought that the Bucs could trim salary by moving Keller elsewhere. The team did move one significant contract off the books when Ke’Bryan Hayes was dealt to the Reds earlier today, which indirectly makes Keller more affordable with more room now in the Pirates’ limited budget.
Hiles heard from a source that the Pirates could re-engage in Keller’s trade market this winter, which could give the team more time and flexibility in finding an acceptable match. Without the deadline crunch, the Bucs could also lower their asking price to a more realistic level. Rosenthal suggested that one reason the Keller talks have stalled is because some clubs “perceive him as nothing more than a mid-rotation starter,” and are therefore perhaps balking at giving up much in the way of significant position-player talent in return, or at taking on Keller’s salary.
Pittsburgh could still explore moving one of its younger and more controllable non-Paul Skenes arms before tomorrow, in order to obtain a proven veteran hitter or a young bat of a comparable prospect value. With Keller now apparently off the board, the Pirates’ decision will raise the asking price for other teams with starters on offer around the league.
They just playing hard to get.
Sounds more like teams are balking on the price tag.
They have no desire to trade Keller. This was never a story. Pirates Cherington listen on anyone everyone. He’s available but only for fair strong return. He’s good, cheap and has 3 more years. That’s very expensive to give fair value for. And most fans think he is a #3 #4 and Mets fans think #5 but he is a weak #2.
With 3.5 years of control. Keller is pitching like an ace. No reason why the Bucs couldn’t get at least 3 prospects for someone of his caliber. The Yankees could probably trade 3 pitching prospects for him. Hess, Selvidge, and Carr for him plus a TJ Rumfield.
Except they don’t need pitching prospects
Nope. 3.69 ERA is a #2-#3. His peripherals point to a #4 or worse. His 18.8% SO rate is far below league average and in the 25th percentile. He has a HH% that is 4 points higher than league average and in the 33rd percentile. His exit velo, chase rate, and whiff rate are all near the bottom of the league. If he was a GB pitcher that might be ok, not good but ok. The problem is he is a fly ball pitcher. His HR%, strand rate, and BAbip point to a lot of luck.
Then teams should move on
Never work. Pirates don’t need pitching prospects, They need bats.
Just looking ahead a couple weeks to the announcement of Mitch Keller’s upcoming Tommy John surgery.
Unlikely. It could happen to anyone even him but for body mechanics he is about as safe as it gets.
Not really a prediction, more of a comment on the luck of the Pirates,
There lucks pretty good. Won lottery to get Skenes. Teams passed on the best player in draft 2 years in a row. Red’s for some reason really really really had to have Hayes.
But was getting Skenes a win? They aren;t really doing anything with him and the fanbase is going to feel the gut punch of the team trading him for prospects in a year or two.
I don’t care about the fanbase and neither does Nutting. He’d throw their bucco bricks in a dumpster if it meant saving a cent.
Fanbase needs to get educated so they can realize Skenes has to be traded and celebrate the return if it’s good.
This is the right time to move Keller. Period. Has control, pitching well and you need hitting. They will likely trade him one year too late instead of one year too early in another example of this sad sack franchise.
Right time is anytime they receive an offer.
I hope this is true.
The Hayes trade is actually no big loss & already saved them money. .290 slugging from your starting 3B isn’t good at all. (Of course, the Reds will fix him & won’t fire minor league hitting coaches for helping him!)
Save them money that they won’t spend
The Reds better have an elite back specialist on staff as that is the root of his problems. Quit hitting after his back started giving him issues.
a herniated disc cannot be fixed without surgery
Even then, no guarantee that it cures all of the issues. Backs ate very tricky.
Well they need to keep him for their perennial playoff push.
The Pirates want a major haul for Keller, who isn’t even an ace. He’s a solid #3/4 starter.
No respectable team would have him as a starter in the playoffs
False. He’s been a consistently solid starter for four seasons now. Why would a playoff team not want him in their rotation, even going into the playoffs?
A playoff team would want him, but he’s not a good top 3 for a contender in a playoff series. He makes a good rotation much stronger, but wouldn’t trust him as the third starter in a 5 game series.
#19 in fangraphs pitcher WAR this year and #24 over the past three seasons. six teams from each league make the playoffs, so it’s pretty easy to do the math.
he is definitely a playoff worthy starter.
Lol.
Teams that go deep use 4 starters
Most playoff contenders don’t have 3 better, much less 4.
Most teams do not have 3 starters better than Keller right now. If you do, Mitch Keller is probably far down the list of priorities for your team.
Carvel has to just be trolling.
Any team that acquires Mitch Keller is never winning a World Series. It’s a fact. Hopefully, the Mets acquire him. Then you can bookmark this.
11 of 12 playoff teams won’t be winning the world series
😂 😆
time for bed young man. no more roblox for you.
Which playoff team are you saying that Keller would fit in the top 3 for? If he is not a top 3 on those playoff teams, then he would not be a starter in the playoffs.
@mlb1225: Because he’s collapsed in the second half in each of the last two seasons. And just coming off a two inning, three run, 76 pitch outing against the punchless Giants. Keller has been wildly overrated by a lot of fans as this deadline has approached. Pirates should have traded him.
I’ll give him some leeway because this was the best start to a season he has had and a lot of the players said they were affected with all the deadline talk. Idk if any fans are overrating him. Everyone knows he’s a solid starter, good for a 100-110 ERA+ and 30-32 starts per year. Nobody is out here calling him an ace, and if anything, people are underrating him.
I said never. Not this year.
Name a playoff team that Keller would be the #3 starter on. Certainly not the Padres. Or the Dodgers. Or the Mets. Or the Phillies. Or the Brewers. Or the Reds. Maybe the Cubs. That is the contenders in the NL and there is only one maybe in that group.
Keller’s peripherals would undoubtedly scare the heck out of playoff teams. 25th percentile in SO% and chase rate. 33rd percentile in HH%.
Name every team he would be a three or better on, and include all the starters that would fill out the rest of a 5 man rotation. Do this for every team, so I know his placement and I will respond.
That’s silly. He’s probably the third starter on the Tigers, Red Sox, Astros, Rangers or Cubs. Hence why they wanted to trade for him.
😂
In 22 starts, 16 are considered quality starts, the second most in the national league.
Apparently you don’t know what you’re talking about
#2
And he’s on a very team friendly contract for the next 2-3 years..
Would you rather give up some good hitting prospects for him or spend $20 Million on the open market for Marcus Stroman to give you 10-15 quality starts?
Why ben why?
Either:
1) They’re not receiving the prospects they want in return
2) They figure they don’t need hitting/ Delusional that Spencer Horwitz is the next David Ortiz.
3) They want to keep the pitching staff stellar
With the market this hot the day before, we may see him go.
… says an “anonymous” source while giggling uncontrollably as he hangs up and hands the phone back to Bob Nutting.
Translation: fish aren’t biting at the current asking price so chum the waters by pulling him back
Pirates should keep their strength a strength. Keep keller. They saved money with the hayes deal and can still deal from their pen.
It doesn’t matter when they trade him or anyone else. They are in an endless cycle of profitable losing. They do not care about fans or the game. Only the bottom line.
This ^^^. 100%
Pirates must think they’ll be competitive in 2026, that’s why they would hang on to Keller.
The Pirates will not be competitive as long as Nutting is the owner.
Although they did have the second best ML record during the 2013-2015 period when Nutting was the owner.
Cherington’s rear end should be on fire and they should be prioritizing winning while Skenes is here.
I read that Nutting wasn’t on board with trading Keller and Ben’s future hinged on whether he would trade him
I told everyone days weeks ago he likely wasn’t going anywhere. They like him. He would be expensive. Maybe tomorrow someone gets desperate.
Bednar much more likely but not a sure thing. They really like him.
Santana probably want to sell high on but they like his cheap arbitration.
Pirates want to contend next year so need relievers. They have pitching prospects. Will take top 50 hitting prospects to get these guys. Top 100 for Santana.
Yeah. No.
you haven’t been right about anything
Yep. Santana and Bednar are basically better than any reliever traded aside from Duran. Helsley is a push. He throws incredibly hard but batters are teeing off on his fastball. Santana is as locked in as I’ve seen and is nasty as an 8th inning guy.
If they can get a good bat with contract control and near ready bat prospect for a G3 type starter, in Keller…..pounce. This is the chance to help Skenes pitch for a more balanced team.
I’m getting the sense they will only move rentals. They seem to want to win in ’26. Not sure how they plan to do that without an offense. Removing hayes from their plans should help score more runs next year, in theory.
The Pirates won’t be in contention in 2026. Or 2027. Or in 2028.
A baseball team has to hit, to win.
The Pirates are the 2nd worst hitting team in baseball and unless they trade players like Keller for hitters will not get better. They got worse this season after being the 3rd worst hitting team in 2024.
They only have one player returning in 2026 that is a league average hitter, Cruz, and would have to add 4 or 5 hitters with a 120 wRC+ or higher just to be league average at the plate as a team.
They don’t have a single position player prospect that grades out as plus (60 FV or higher) hitter. Morel may one day get there, but he is 17 years old.
For someone who hates Keller you sure want to see him traded!
Pads Fan sounds like someone who is jealous that Keller isn’t available for his team
2nd worst offense but lowest era since June 22
I always thought they should keep him. Werent going to get a plug and play bat at the deadline which is only thing they should want for him.
Pirates likely to be a losing franchise past the deadline and into the next decade.
Nice stadium awful management
Nice stadium awful ownership
FTFY
He isn’t ace SP.
Why
I hope this is true! Unless you get blown away with an offer, you keep Keller! Starting Pitching is gold!
Two points…
1) Unless the Pirates can move Keller in a 1 for 1 for a proven bat who will be either their best or, at least, one of their top 3 position players, there is no reason to do it.
2) Teams ALWAYS low ball the Pirates knowing that every other team will also ALWAYS low ball the Pirates believing (knowing) they’ll eventually have to accept a package like the Gerritt Cole trade.
They never bid against the market. They bid against the Pirates’ poverty.
Both great points. I basically said the same thing as you did in point 1 earlier, something like that would be easier to do in the offseason a “baseball trade” which would make more sense than a prospect package for Keller if you are gonna move him.
He probably makes more sense in a winter off season trade, Teams aren’t going to trade plug play position player at the deadline.
Since Donny Kelly took over they are 1 game over .500 despite having 2 offensive black holes in their starting 8 (C and 3B). This coincides with Horwitz and Gonzales getting back into the line-up. Davis has actually become a good defensive catcher, and has hit at all levels except MLB (still upside possibility). Pitching wise, they are 4th in MLB in fewest runs allowed. The pitching foundation is in place. — The trades they made are solid. They essentially traded Hayes for 2 legitimate longer term prospects (Stahura and Martinez) and saved 36M in the process. Considering Ferguson and Taylor Rogers as a wash (Rogers actually better-but will be gone. — I would not trade from their controllable strength unless the return will make them better in 2026. Definitely don’t trade starting pitching (except Heaney). Detroit, Seattle, and Boston could be trade options IF they would trade premium MLB ready prospects. More likely, they will have to use Free Agency to improve. Don’t trade just to trade.
Theyre under .500 under DK, even after winning 5 in a row. I didnt read the rest of your comment
Exactly, exactly, ecactly. Yours is the best, most intelligent, and well thought out comment I have read here. You must have a strong baseball background.
@AI just just 2 days you said to me ‘I’ll remind you once Keller gets traded’ what are you talking about lol.
I never said that
‘If they trade Keller I will always remind you how you said they wouldn’t.’
That’s a direct copy and paste from Nick Deeds July 29th article Rangers, Tigers Interested in David Bednar article that you replied to my comment with….
Someone will get desperate by 6 tonight and offer them a top 100 guy for him
Seems to me the decision on guys like Keller may very well be left up to the next GM.
If Bednar and Santana are not moved it would be a major mistake. But something tells me the price is over inflated so BC can come out with a win in the trade.
