Cubs To Sign Carlos Santana

By Nick Deeds | August 31, 2025 at 9:05am CDT

Veteran first baseman Carlos Santana is signing with the Cubs, according to a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The terms of the deal are not currently known. Chicago’s 40-man roster is full, and the Cubs will need to make a corresponding move in order to add Santana to the roster.

The 39-year-old veteran was released by the Guardians last week in what president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti described to reporters (including MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins) as a “joint decision” to allow Santana to pursue a shot at the postseason with another club while affording more playing time to younger first base options in Cleveland like Kyle Manzardo and rookie C.J. Kayfus. That opportunity to play in the postseason will now come via Chicago, where the Cubs currently occupy the first of three NL Wild Card spots with a 78-58 record and have a 99.9% chance of making the postseason according to Fangraphs.

Santana is something of a curious fit for a Cubs team that already has both Michael Busch and Justin Turner on the roster as players limited to first base and DH. The veteran switch-hitter has struggled at the plate in 116 games this year, with a slash line of just .225/.316/.333 (86 wRC+) across 455 plate appearances. While he’s still taking walks at a strong 11.3% clip, Santana’s power has mostly disappeared and his 18.9% strikeout rate this year is the highest it’s been since his first full season as a big league player all the way back in 2011.

One potential use case for Santana on the roster would be to replace Turner, who has posted a lackluster wRC+ of just 70 with Chicago this year. With that being said, Turner’s primary role (and, likely, Santana’s primary role in replacing him) would be serving as a platoon partner for Busch, mostly playing against left-handed pitching. In that specific role, Turner is actually arguably a better fit than Santana given that he has an above-average 109 wRC+ against lefties this year as compared to Santana’s pedestrian 93 wRC+ against southpaws this season.

On the other hand, the switch-hitting Santana fares much better against right-handed pitching than Turner, and is also regarded as a much stronger defender. Santana is also just one season removed from a brilliant year in Minnesota where he posted a 113 wRC+ overall with a 161 wRC+ against left-handed pitching and won the AL’s Gold Glove award at first base. If the Cubs think they can help Santana get back into the form he showed with the Twins last year, it’s easy to see why they’d want to bring him into the fold.

Santana’s addition to the roster doesn’t necessarily have to come at the expense of Turner’s roster spot, of course. While carrying three players limited to first base defensively is unusual, rosters are set to expand to 28 players tomorrow. During Miguel Amaya’s brief return from the injured list earlier this month, the Cubs were comfortable utilizing both Amaya and Reese McGuire as backups to Carson Kelly behind the plate, which with Turner in the fold at first base left only one spot for a utility player. Perhaps that willingness to use defensively-limited players on the bench is thanks to the extreme versatility of utility man Willi Castro, who is capable of backing up every position on the diamond aside from first base and catcher.

The aforementioned roster expansion set to occur tomorrow often allows teams to get more creative with in-game substitutions, as well, and that’s another way Santana could offer value to Chicago. Turner has been atrocious against right-handed pitching this year with a wRC+ of 18, so while he’s been an excellent choice to spell Busch in a high-leverage at-bat against a southpaw this year, his subsequent at-bats against righties and poor glove at first base have been a hindrance to the Cubs following that pinch-hit appearance. With Santana on the roster, Turner could still pinch-hit for Busch before ceding the first base job to Santana, who has been closer to split neutral this year and carries a strong glove.

It’s also worth noting that the Cubs’ current options at first base and DH have been struggling somewhat in the second half. While Busch (136 wRC+) and Seiya Suzuki (122 wRC+) are putting together strong seasons overall, their .209/.270/.403 (87 wRC+) and .202/.340/.279 (86 wRC+) lines since the All-Star break leave much to be desired. Chicago will surely need its middle of the order to straighten things out ahead of the playoffs, and perhaps adding a steady veteran like Santana could afford those players occasional days off down the stretch to allow them that opportunity.

On the other hand, it’s worth noting that the club could’ve also offered a young player the opportunity to spell those veterans given their large crop of position player prospects on the cusp of the minors. Owen Caissie is already on the roster, while Moises Ballesteros and Kevin Alcantara have both already made their MLB debuts previously. None of those players play first base like Santana does, but Jonathon Long has turned heads this year with a .308/.405/.498 slash line in 123 Triple-A games this year and could easily be called upon to spell Busch and Turner at first base if the club so desired. Perhaps the Cubs feel the intense environment of a playoff race in September isn’t the best way to introduce these young players to the majors, however, and even a struggling veteran like Santana is a safer bet to round out the roster.

How come Cleveland didn’t win the World series in 2016 when they had Carlos Santana? They had a three games to one lead and could have won it in five

Mostly because Kris Bryant finally came alive offensively in Game 5, followed by the entire Cubs offense waking up for Games 6 & 7. Add to that, Game 5, 6, and 7, the Cubs had their three best pitchers on the mound, and the Cubs finally figured out Corey Kluber in Game 7 after he had dominated the Cubs in his first two appearances.

The Cubs had a more talented team and eventually won one of the closest series of all time. Both teams played well, including Santana. It was a series for the ages and somebody had to lose.

Ask O’Neill Cruz about that. Seems the on deck hitter (Santana) was too busy doing something else, when he should have been telling Cruz to slide. That cost his team mate a whole season. Oh, and Pittsburgh came in last with him.

Hey stymeedone, how about *you* ask Oneil Cruz about that play? Then he could tell you personally how it was a bang-bang play at the plate, how it was a freak accident that his ankle got caught on the catcher’s shin, and how Santana had nothing to do with the injury. But before you go talk to him, maybe you should first get his actual name straight in your head, yeah?

Excellent point, however, about how Santana failed in his responsibility to prevent the Pirates from finishing in last place. He totally sucks. Good thing the Pirates got rid of him. Not sure why they’re still hanging onto that loser Skenes, another player who failed in his responsibility to prevent the Pirates from being a losing team. Maybe the Cubs will compound their awful Santana mistake by also scooping up Skenes once the Pirates justifiably DFA him.

LOL get outta here with those kind of posts. Someone should ticket you for littering.

Which was precisely the same situation in CLE – they had more than enough young players on the roster to cover 1B, but they still paid Santana $12M and ran him out there daily when it should have been Manzardo & Co the entire year that would have yielded the same or better results. So good luck with that juggling act, Counsell.

Obviously needs to be in the organization today to be playoff eligible.

But—sort of an odd time to let Justin Turner go. (if that ends up being the case) Santana can’t possibly replace anyone else.

I’m guessing Alcantara is going to be the position player September call up

Is there a pure baserunner in the system that can fill that role that Brujan and Berti tried to earlier?

Why not just bring Alcantara up tomorrow. Colorado only has ONE lefty in the pen. You never know what type of game you are going to get but more likely to need a lefty off the bench late than a righty?

(obviously no lineup announced or seen yet today at about 1015)

You don’t use an option until you hit the ML roster. Not sent to AAA. I’m not positive but I’m 99% sure. Besides they own his rights until he’s like ready for arbitration. I respectfully disagree.

disagree all you want, it’s as simple as a trip to fangraphs or milb.com where you will read that he is in his 3rd of 3 option years because he’s been on the 40-man roster. he was optioned out of camp the last 3 years, you start using options when you’re on the 40-man.

Just seeing that days in September don’t count toward rookie eligibility. So, Caissie won’t hit the 45 day limit and the way he has been used unlikely to hit the plate appearance limit.

Santana to a minor league deal today, then select and promote him on Monday and DFA a guy like Eli Morgan on September 1.

Jonny Long doesn’t have to be added to the 40-man roster this off-season to avoid the Rule 5 draft. And Long is the #3 1B in the organization. If Busch gets injured, Santana and Turner split 1B.

Also it’s likely that in the WC round they will go with 11 or 12 pitchers and 14 or 15 position players, as they only need three starting pitchers.

During the regular season, bench players benefit from low expectations. So many times this year, I’ve also thought “Turner is cooked,” and then every now and then he comes up with a big hit and I end up sighing and muttering, “Alright, maybe the Cubs should keep him around for a little while longer.” But now thoughts are turning to the post-season, and the measure of a player’s usefulness- starter or bench- becomes much more exacting. If a bench player comes up in a post-season game, it’s likely to be a crucial moment, and Turner just isn’t a player I want at the plate for the Cubs in that moment. I don’t dislike him at all, but the Cubs need to do better.

Turner really doesn’t have a spot when Santana comes… Santana is a better fielder…Cubs have Castro to back up at third.

Turner has hit better against lefties this season—but not exactly tearing it up—just better than Busch against lefties.

I cannot see a scenario where Santana is in Colorado today—but who knows.

Rosters expand tomorrow—I guess it could only be Santana.

Hunching that it’s going to be Alcantara with Santana replacing Turner—still would be an odd cut with the chemistry on the team right now—especially with Turner.

Turner is PCA and Shaw’s spirit guide. He’s not going anywhere.

Uncle–that’s why I think it would be an odd cut—but I also I don’t see Santana as the “27th” man specifically. I think they need a little bit of speed with “that” guy.

I’ll be real surprised if they release Turner, and I’m not even sure it would be a good idea at this point. The “great-guy-good-teammate” factor, though I usually pooh-pooh it, could come into play. Swanson and other vets might go into a sulk if they let Turner go.

Besides the better choice would be Triantos over Alcantara. He can play 7 positions and is a better hitter and base runner than Alcantara right now.. Trust me

Carlos Santana doesn’t need to be in Denver for today’s game. He can be added afterward as long as it’s before midnight in order to be eligible for the postseason. I’m guessing that Owen Cassie gets demoted before midnight with Santana being added. Santana and Justin Turner can then fight it out for a postseason roster slot as a bench piece and the backup at 1B for Michael Busch.

The Cubs can also play the match up game in October with Santana and Turner depending on their opponent for each playoff series assuming that injuries don’t impact any of their 1B options before then.

        In other words…Oye como va!

Whether a player is called up before or after midnight on Sept 1 has NO bearing at all for them being eligible for postseason.

ANY player in the organization on August 31st is eligible for the postseason.

Just because Alcantara came up tonight and Caissie went down it has NO bearing on each of their postseason eligibility. They are both postseason eligible.

Although they both happen to be being called up for Sept 1 the fact is that Civale and Santana are eligible as they were in the organization on August 31.

Note: Players must be in an organization prior to 11 a.m. CT on Sept. 1 to be available for a spot on their postseason roster.

Alcantara will be a free agent next season if not rostered and on the team next year. Surprised he wasn’t moved at the deadline. He might get a shot as a late inning replacement at the end of the season but can’t see
        him
        making the team next year.

Some players are eligible for fourth year options. Alcantara should be one of them.

Well the rosters expand on September 1st so technically Cassie would not have to be demoted

I don’t know that Santana is washed up or that he won’t help some–and I get the bit about veteran presence and postseason experience and all that, and I think that it has some degree of merit–but I think I would have just called up Ballesteros to be the 14th position player.

While we’re on the subject, I think that limiting the Sept. 1 roster expansion to 28 from 26, one extra pitcher and one extra position player–was overkill. Maybe letting teams go to 40 (though none ever really did that, btw) was too much, but 28 is too few. 30 or 31 would have been about right.

I loved the old September callups. You would be in a close pennant race with an 11-man pitching staff, and EVERYONE was out of gas. Just trying to get through the last week of August, and then 6-7 reinforcements ride in to the rescue.

Can’t have enough .220-.240 hitters going down the stretch. Probably a press conference to announce an extension.

If you are heading post season, you want a player like Santana. Good glove, good eye at the plate. Leader who can impress upon the others. Hope to see him as a manager one day.

Turner to the IL with some phantom injury so he can still hang out and be best buddies/spirit animal/mascot for everyone in the organization.

They have a top 10 first baseman in MLB. He’s currently 7th overall in WAR behind Guerrero, Harper, Freeman, Olson, Alonso and Contreras.

Michael Busch got plunked above the knee in last night’s game. I would not be surprised if he goes on the 10 day IL. If that’s the case, then this move makes sense..

That’s an interesting observation. Seems a bit unlikely just because the HBP happened early in the game and not only did Busch stay in, but wound up running out a triple later on. I think the signing is just the team trying to line up some pieces with the post-season in mind and not feeling particularly confident about Turner in that role. But still, the timing of this Santana signing and the Busch HBP has some merit as a hypothesis. Not gonna lie- the Santana signing had me a bit mystified, too.

Turner and now Santana both aging veterans and youngsters like long and caissie no place now or in foreseeable future. This team will still make playoffs as 3rd wildcard with fast exit from playoffs.
