Prior to Friday’s 7-6 loss to the Rays, the Giants placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 13. (The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser was the first to report the IL placement.) With right-hander Ryan Walker also going on the paternity list, the Giants addressed the two open roster spots by calling up right-hander Keaton Winn from Triple-A and activating righty Landen Roupp from the 15-day IL to make the start.
Chapman is dealing with inflammation in his right hand, and has taken a cortisone shot in an effort to try and return in a minimal amount of time. Even then, as he told Slusser and other reporters Friday that his hand likely won’t be fully healed until the offseason. It all stems from the initial hand injury that sidelined Chapman for about four weeks in June and early July, when he suffered sprains and bone bruises on three fingers on his right hand following a painful dive back to third base.
Even after returning from that first IL stint, Chapman was still playing through discomfort, leaving him “trying to push through it, do what I can.” Things reached a breaking point within the last few days, when Chapman’s hand became sore enough that “I really felt like I couldn’t use my hand when I was swinging, and it just didn’t feel right.”
The numbers underline Chapman’s struggles. The third baseman hit .243/.360/.452 over his first 272 place appearances of the season, but then batted just .200/.290/.365 over the 131 PA in between his two IL placements.
Chapman’s slump has been just one factor in a team-wide offensive shortage over the last month, which has led to the Giants’ big slide down the standings. San Francisco is 7-21 over its last 28 games, which includes an ongoing six-game losing streak and a hard-to-believe stretch of 14 losses in the Giants’ last 15 home games. Even if Chapman does return in a minimal amount of time and is able to regain his form at the plate, it may already be too late for the Giants to make a late push at a wild card slot.
Casey Schmitt is the likeliest fill-in for Chapman at third base, though Schmitt had to leave Friday’s game after being hit by a pitch. In the postgame media session, Giants manager Bob Melvin told Slusser and company that x-rays were negative, though Schmitt may need to miss a few games to let his right forearm contusion heal up. This could put Christian Koss in line for some third base playing time.
Thinking…thinking..thinking..yeah I got nothing. Get well soon ?
The Giants have a lot of money tied up in Chapman at age 32. Is it just going to be chronic injury after chronic injury as he ages?
This isn’t really a chronic injury, nor does it have anything to do with age. It’s a fluke injury that hasn’t been allowed to heal properly because he’s been trying to play through it.
No reason to think he won’t be fine next year.
Agreed. It’s just a lingering injury that needs rest to heal properly. As to age, it’s so overrated until not!!!
He’s had issues with his hands and wrists since his minor league days perhaps even longer. Guy only knows how to play one way, which is as hard as he possibly can. It’s admirable until he goes into a prolonged slump and surprise surprise he’s got an unresolved hand issue.
But, if you love him for playing like he does you have to put up with playing like he does.
fitzgerald going to get a look too
We already know what Fitzgerald doesn’t bring to the party. He has been horrible all season.
His swing and miss is easily replaceable. But because of his speed and occasional pop his future is as a utility guy and nothing more.
Pretty sure Koss will be taking the utility spot from his future. Fitz may not be long in the organization IMO.
last season he was one of th best hitters in baseball.
might not be worth giving up him yet
This is obviously a brotherly love move by the Giants to stick it to the Dodgers. See you in San Diego this week BoMel.
How’s Chapman on Injured list affect the Dodgers? Makes no sense! By the Way Dodgers took two of this weekends games in LA vs Padres!
Half these guys could play through their injuries, they just want a few days off.
Playing through with less productivity is not ideal. Especially if there are good back ups to the position. In this case, it’s absolutely the right move to use the short IL. Schmitt and Koss both fine defensively, and out hitting Chappy right now.
Says the guy eating cheesepuffs and chugging RC Cola on his recliner.
I actually had some Cheetos last night. Didn’t even think about RC though. That sounds good.
There’s a reason RC is not as popular as Coca Cola or Pepsi.
RC Cola is unconditionally the superior choice for cola style sodas…..
Anyway, Cheesy Poofs are an abomination and a pox on the list of inappropriate snack food choices……
Birdie man: Where did you get your medical training again?
Linkdin resume suggests frequent flyer status at Holiday Inns?
Holiday Inn Express, to be precise. 🤣
Glad they didn’t use this as an excuse to call up Elldridge
Keeping top prospects down in the minors isn’t something that makes me glad. I’m glad the A’s didn’t keep Nick Kurtz down for long. Better to let these guys get some major league experience now.
Id normally agree but Eldridge is still 20 and power aside seems to be struggling at triple A with a 230 ba and under 300 obp..the jump from aaa to mlb is pretty massive hes probably where he needs to be right now
Eldridge also needs more time to work on defense. Dom Smith has been really good for the Giants. Professional hitter who plays good defense. And Devers is working at learning 1B. No need to rush Eldridge.
Agree that he belongs in Sacto. His Wrc+ from FanGraphs is 97 at AAA. So he is 3% below average but almost every pitcher he faces is older than him. He strikes out 32% of the time.
Hmmm, I wonder if Rafael Devers will volunteer.
Despite the drama Devers and the Red Sox went through he has been very cooperative with the Giants. At this point I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I didn’t realize what a good hitter he actually is. Teammates seem to like him and vice versa.
Yes. He can hit. The misery of late would be much higher without him.
Giants play like they packed it in for the winter.
All of that money for a .229 hitter.
The Giants are in trouble.
In trouble was a few weeks back. Giants are gone. Let him heal.
Buster Posey was a bust this year.
Not at all. The players are playing below career expectation. Changes will need to happen in the off season, but this isn’t on Buster.
I look what BoMel did with a team full of superstars in San Diego and led them to .500 records. I was cautiously optimistic when the Giants hired him. Then without Soto the Padres are arguably the best team in baseball.
My biggest gripe besides sucking is BoMel never seems to enjoy himself.
Brandon Crawford, Giants manager in 2026.
Wilmer from left field !
I didn’t articulate myself very well. I meant to say that my biggest gripe about the Giants besides them sucking is Melvin never seems to be enjoying himself. He’s had a good career as a manager but I no longer think he’s the answer in SF.
