The Opener: Raleigh, Schwarber, Red Sox, AL Central

By Nick Deeds | September 25, 2025 at 8:59am CDT

Here are four things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Raleigh chasing Judge’s record:

The Mariners clinched the AL West yesterday, and they did so on back of two more home runs from AL MVP candidate Cal Raleigh. Those homers were the 59th and 60th of Raleigh’s season, making him the seventh player in MLB history to hit 60 long balls in a single season. With the records for most home runs by a catcher, most home runs by a Mariner, and most home runs by a switch-hitter all locked up, Raleigh has one more major milestone he can reach this year: the AL home run record, set by fellow AL MVP candidate Aaron Judge just three years ago. Raleigh would need two more homers to match Judge’s record and three more to break it. That’s going to be a tall order with just four games left, but Raleigh has already hit four homers in his past four games and has recorded 11 multi-homer games throughout the year.

2. Schwarber chasing Howard:

Raleigh wasn’t the only star slugger to have a multi-homer game last night. Kyle Schwarber hit his 55th and 56th home runs of the season, leaving him just two dingers behind Ryan Howard’s franchise record of 58 homers. Like Raleigh’s pursuit of the AL record, Schwarber is facing long odds with just four games left on the calendar. However, he does benefit from those games being against non-contenders; Philadelphia wraps a series against the Marlins today before completing their regular season schedule with a three-game set against the Twins, who have been MLB’s worst team since their sell-off at the trade deadline.

3. Red Sox aim to clinch:

The Red Sox could punch their ticket to the postseason today. They’ll go for the sweep against their division rival Blue Jays and send Brayan Bello (3.34 ERA) to the mound while Toronto opts for a bullpen game opened by Louis Varland (3.10 ERA in 72 relief appearances). Boston could still clinch even if they lose that game, however, as they’ll also lock up a postseason spot if the Athletics and righty J.T. Ginn (4.57 ERA in 15 starts) manage to take down the Astros and southpaw Framber Valdez. Valdez has a solid 3.75 ERA in 30 starts this year, but it’s worth noting that he’s struggled badly with a 6.71 ERA since the start of August. If and when the Red Sox do punch their postseason ticket, it’ll be their first trip to the playoffs since 2021.

4. Guardians go for the sweep:

Cleveland’s stunning Cinderella run for the AL Central crown seemingly cannot be stopped. The Guardians sat a whopping 9.5 games out of first place as recently as Sept. 10, but they’ve stormed to sole possession of the AL Central lead by winning 18 of their past 21 games — including two in a row against the now-second-place Tigers, who’ve spent nearly the entire season in first place. The Guards haven’t lost back-to-back games since Sept. 1-2.

That historic run wouldn’t have catapulted them into first place had Detroit sustained its prior pace — or even if the Tigers had simply been playing decently. Instead, the inverse of last year’s storybook run in Detroit has played out. The Tigers have faceplanted with a 5-15 record in September, including a current eight-game losing streak. They’re still in possession of a Wild Card spot, holding a one-game lead over an also-reeling Astros club that has lost five in a row. The Tigers will look to stop the bleeding and push back into a tie for the division lead in today’s series finale. Detroit will turn to rookie righty Troy Melton, who has a 2.79 ERA but has been working in multi-inning relief stints lately. It’ll likely be a bullpen game for manager AJ Hinch. The Guardians will counter with lefty Parker Messick. The rookie southpaw has been a major factor in Cleveland’s sprint to first place, having logged a 2.08 ERA in 34 2/3 innings across six starts since making his MLB debut on Aug. 20.

Just let Melton go as long as he can. Screw scheduled bullpen games. We need everything he can give today.

Baseball has a connection to history that the other major sports don’t quite approach. So, these are great storylines, and tee up potentially a terrific weekend–even if you aren’t a fan of the teams and players involved.

Want a connection to history? Cleveland was 15.5 games behind Detroit on July 6 and 10.5 games out on Labor Day. Should the Guardians win the AL Central, they would rival the 1914 “Miracle Braves” and the 1978 Yankees for the greatest comeback in baseball.

I stated a week or so ago while people were focusing on the stros and mariners, Cleveland and tigers cincy, Mets etc etc… I was thinking that this ALE could get wild , and it seems that it has. Jays up 5 games two weeks ago 6on the r Sox now could mathematically and quite possibly wind up the 3rd WC. With the remaining games in each teams schedule it looks very possible if the current trend continues. Or even a tie breaker for Sox n jays,I think , or maybe my math ain’t math’n up?

Yanks about to sneak in and not only swipe the AL East but the #1 seed as well. Which makes sense considering they have, by far, the best run differential in the AL. Since being 60-54 on August 5th, they’ve gone 30-14. They’re playing incredible baseball but there are so many other stories going on that it has been buried.

Unfortunately there are no tie-breaker games anymore. League decided late season chaos was too fun and had to go.

If Sox and Blue Jays finish tied, Blue Jays have the H2H tiebreaker (up 7-5 in the season series, so even if Boston wins today Toronto still has the season series in hand)

if Sox and Yankees tie, Sox have the H2H tiebreaker so they win.

Don’t get me wrong I would LOVE to see a scenario where we win our last 4 while the Jays and Yankees both get swept over the weekend, but I feel like that is an unreasonably big ask from the baseball gods. We came close enough to blowing a comfortable position in the standings that I am perfectly happy enough just to have our magic number down to 1 with Crochet and Bello lined up to pitch games 1 and 2 of the WC both on 5 days rest. I’ll take that!

I don’t know if it’s gotta be, but it will be if he ties or sets the record. It’s probably his right now. I was out with a bunch of baseball friends of different teams last night. Mets fans, Red Sox fans, one other Yankee fan, a Royals fan and we always have fun arguments that we must win. I asked innocently who is the best player in the NL. They universally said Ohtani. Then I asked who was the best player in the AL. They universally said Judge. Then I asked who is the MVP in each league. They immediately said Ohtani for the NL and then most paused on the AL because they knew I had set them up. Judge is the most valuable player in the league, but Raleigh will win because of that HR number. There is Judge fatigue, so Raleigh gives a plausible excuse not to vote for him.

The best season ever for not only a catcher but for anyone. Just give Raleigh the MVP right now he definitely deserves it. The way he carried the Mariners to the Division title and maybe a 1st round bye.

No doubt that Judge is a better pure hitter than Raleigh, but I didn’t think it was possible for a catcher to hit like this over a full season. It’s impossible to pinpoint the “value” of getting this level of bat from the position, so to me it’s obvious he should win MVP. Judge is a worthy MVP too (both teams would have been sunk without their big guy), but big corner OF bats are nothing remotely unique when it comes to MVP winners.

MVP catchers are super rare, and we’ve never seen this kind of season from one before. Err on the side of the extra special!

Probably so, either way the cubs didnt “set his career back a good bit squatting on him” by keeping him from being a full time DH. If that were true, then the Nationals/Red Sox/Phillies are also complicit in setting his career back

Schwarber was a platoon player with the Cubs. Not the same. And the nationals weren’t a celler dweller then. They had Soto and Turner and scherzer and a World Series title in their back pocket. You have a very strange memory bias.

Its funny how often this comes up.

Remember when Schwarber signed with the lowly nationals on a 1 year 10 million dollar deal after being non tendered? Every team could have locked him up, but he went with a cellar dweller for 10 million. That’s less than he would have gotten through arbitration if the cubs held onto him.

Every team essentially passed on Schwarber, so using it to beat up on Hoyer is idiotic

Before, or after, his 50 home season, he had only two other years hitting more than 20 homes runs. 21 home runs in one and 24 in another. I can’t confirm performance enhancing drugs but it makes you wonder?

George Springer went on record saying baseball has fixed the schedule for the Yankees to win the AL East. A ballplayer who was on the Astros when they got caught cheating is the last man anyone should believe about the schedule.
Also, should Springer’s old ballclub lose its afternoon getaway game against the A’s, the Red Sox would take the field tonight knowing they’re in the postseason.

As much as i dislike the Yankees, the schedule was made a year ago. Yes a series against the White Sox may have been a late season gift but they have to finish with 3 against the Orioles, who were a 91 win team and a playoff team last season, at the time no one knew they would be so bad this season

Springer is just making excuses for the Blue Jays late slide that has seen them lose 6 of their last 7 games

I always find it funny when people talk about how easy a schedule one team has compared to another at the end of the season. Wouldn’t it simply imply that the other team had easier schedule at some point earlier in the season?

Interestingly enough, at the beginning of the season weren’t the odds on the Red Sox making the playoffs pretty low and the Orioles were higher? Had all been going according to plan the Jays could have had an easier last 6 games than the yankees. Just another way of thinking about it all….

Yes, but that’s the pro and con of the “balanced” schedule. Of course it is correct and fair that nobody would’ve known Baltimore was due to regress so badly this year, but the larger point is that it doesn’t really matter who the surprisingly good or bad teams are. We know no matter what that this schedule format is going to create a bunch of games late in the year that are just not as compelling or dramatic as having September loaded with mostly divisional opponents.

Nobody wants to watch the White Sox in the Bronx in the last week of the season. If you want a compelling division race it would help to have the teams in that division actually playing each other. The Red Sox could’ve made it an even closer and more compelling 3 team race for example, had they not had to play twice as many games against the Vegamento A’s this month than they did against any other team from the AL East. That is inherently stupid.

Some of that is easy fixes though. Schedule the majority of September games for all teams as divisional, yeah you’ll have to have some interleague games sprinkled in but when you can have 24 September games against divisional opponents than there’s nothing to complain about

I agree, they could at least backload schedules to be as division-heavy as possible and even just doing that would be an improvement from what it is currently. But personally I would like to revert to the previous method where not only was September mostly division games, but you played far more divisional games throughout the season as well.

It sounds good but it’s still a problem. At any given time you can only ever have two interdivisional series going on. Take for instance the last 3 games of this year. In the AL East you have Tampa v. Toronto, Baltimore v. NY. You have the Red Sox left out playing the Tigers. At the beginning of the month you could argue this is unfair to the Red Sox.

Let’s say each team in the AL East played 24 games in September. So 8 3-game contests. Even if you schedule as “fair” as possible, at least 3 teams will play 6 games out of the division. Who they play is now also based off of the same rules for all six divisions.

My point is no matter how “fair” you decide to make it, someone is going to be unhappy.

A great captain once said. “Don’t give up the ship”, and a great leader of Britain once remarked. If the Detroit Tigers and M.L.B last for a thousand years, this will be their finest hour ! “Its not over till its over”, a great player once said as well.

The Tiger’s have their backs against the wall, but they have a great chance to make the playoffs. They control their own destiny still, and that’s all anyone ever asks. What happens going forward with the team is still in their control. GO TIGERS !

Since Tigers have tiebreaker over Astros (essentially 2 game cushion), they are still looking okay for wildcard with the latter running on fumes. Wouldn’t bet on winning the ALC since Clev has tiebreaker.

Yes, sir, and another great captain of a Tigers ship once requested brown britches for his game time attire that night.

Why captain? You usually opt for your red coat.

Well sailor, I wear the red coat in case I’m shot. I don’t want my sailors to panic and see that I’m injured.

Perhaps the red coat can disguise evidence of a circumstance, and the sailors won’t lose heart and will continue fighting onward.

So as I requested, please bring my brown britches for tonight‘s game.

Another great captain, this one a Knickerbocker out of New York, once opined, “The ship be sinking”. When pressed, “How far can it sink?”, he rejoindered, “The sky’s the limit”.

Don’t worry… the sour taste will leave your mouth if you clinch the division and top seed. There’s been a few times I had to choke out “go yankees” when I knew it would benefit the Sox.

Raleigh has a great chance tonight as he will continue to feast on Rockies pitching and facing Bradley Blalock, one of the most HR-prone starters in the game with 16 HRs allowed in just 55 innings and an ERA above nine. Yikes. Cal may own the record by the third inning! More seriously, it would be to his advantage to hit at least another tonight as he’ll face the Dodgers pitchers this weekend. My prediction: he’ll tie Judge.

has mlb ever had five 50 hr hitters in 1 season? Raleigh, Schwarber,Ohtani,Judge all have 50. Eugenio has 48

in 2001 there were a bunch of juiced guys with over 50 but this might be the 1st time ever with 4 legit 50 hr hitters, 5 if suarez hits 2 more

did mlb change the ball again to induce more taters?

Doesn’t look like they did anything special this year.

      MLB Homerun Totals

      2018 – 5585
      2019 – 6776
      2021 – 5944
      2022 – 5215
      2023 – 5868
      2024 – 5453
2025 – 5501 (with 4 games to go for all teams)

2019, 2021 and 2023 look like possible juiced balls, 2019 most obviously. This year actually looks like pretty standard output, so this years crop of 50+ guys deserve their due credit.

In fact, thinking on it further, two teams have played their home games in little kiddie parks this season, so if anything, this years ball might actually be a little deadened, since there were a bunch of extra homers in the Rays/A’s home games.

The Athletics, in particular, have long played in a very pitcher friendly park while the Rays’ Tropicana field has been more of a neutral park for homers. Both teams parks this year have been top 10 in giving up homers. If both teams had been playing in their usual parks, the total numbers might actually be a little lower then normal this season.

That handy 10 game win streak sure gave me a lot of confidence.

But really every year I feel good about the Red Sox making the playoffs up until about August. Then I burn my hat lol so Father’s Day yes I was confident.

But usually by Labor Day, I’m onto something else.

Another thing was the kid coming in and taking his batting average ever so slowly but steadily from .179 all the way up to .290. That was wonderful to watch and it was definitely puffing up my chest a little bit week after week.

Oh come on… we never doubted!

Ok yes, a lie. I honestly believed the Devers trade was a white flag. After my initial disgust with the deal I did finally see it was better for the franchise in the long run but I still thought we were giving up our best offensive weapon when we were barely in contention. Addition by subtraction. Crazy.

I also hated everything about trading Devers at first but it is truly remarkable how quickly it became obvious that it was exactly what they needed to do.

Now the part I’m more displeased with is how they turned around and gave away Tibbs for nothing. Could’ve wound up getting two decent players out of it as a cherry on top if he and Harrison worked out. Still could get one with Harrison, I guess.

Trading for Crochet was easily the difference. FO gets credit for grabbing a young cheap ace that aren’t often available.

According to Red Sox fans here, lol? Loaded question !!

The reality is the entire team deserves credit win or lose. Champions or failures.

Singling out one group or role is handy during contract renewal time, trade deadline, or firing season. But it’s the whole team as a unit win or lose. Just my two cents.

I’ve never been shy about ragging on them when I don’t like their moves, so I’ll be the first to say overall I am very pleased with the body of work this year. Breslow and Bailey have done a lot to improve the organizational competence at identifying, developing, and acquiring pitching and we are starting to see it pay dividends. That’s huge. I wonder what the offense/defense alignment will look like in 2026 because with graduating prospects, guys set to hit the market, etc. things could be drastically different. Hopefully for the better. And I’ll hand it to Cora, even though his tactical decisions are not always the greatest, I think he has kept everyone in the right place mentally through a tough September so they are eyes on the prize and came in to this series in Toronto ready to embrace the moment instead of shrinking away like the Tigers are.

Kyle Teel is raking in his first taste of action for the Pale Hose, so that might turn out to be our 2020’s version of giving up Hanley Ramirez for Beckett and Lowell. Of course I have zero regrets about what we got and Crochet has been worth everything he cost, but you always wonder what might’ve been every time any of the outgoing prospects live up to their billing on another team.

Schwarber deserves at least 2 years/$61M based on his performance coming off that 4 year/$79M deal, which was clearly something of a discount when all has been said and done.

Schwarber feels like the exact kind of player who could have been signed to like 10 years/$250M and lived up to the deal, but has had to do the journeyman thing.

I realize 4 years isn’t really short term, but its flown by and he feels like he is just getting warmed up.

Judge is definitely having a great season but he tends to have a great season every year now. It’s hard for a player to have a great season and have numbers better than Judge. Witt had what will probably be a career year and still couldn’t catch Judge. Raleigh will probably not come close to this year’s performance again. I say give the MVP to Raleigh because he’s definitely been more valuable to his team this year.

The Big Humper is having a decent power hitting season but is far behind Judge. Kal Ralley is only hitting in the 240s and really only plays about 2/3 of games as catcher, other times just a DH. He also strikes out almost 1/3 at bats, but I digress.
The Big Lumper is no MVP. All around the Judge-inator leads in most offensive categories and is far better defensively. Sorry Seattle fans.
