Willson Contreras’ Suspension Reduced To Four Games

By Anthony Franco | September 5, 2025 at 5:25pm CDT

Willson Contreras’ suspension was reduced to four games on appeal, writes Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The Cardinals first baseman had initially been hit with a six-game ban for his outburst towards umpire Derek Thomas after he was ejected from a game against the Pirates on August 25.

Contreras will need to begin serving the suspension tonight. He’ll miss this weekend’s series against the Giants and Monday’s opener in Seattle. The Cardinals are 5.5 games back in the Wild Card race. San Francisco has pulled within four games of a playoff spot after winning nine of their last 10. The Mariners are clinging to postseason position in the American League. These have the potential to be important games.

Nolan Gorman moves across the diamond from third base tonight against Giants’ righty Carson Seymour. The Cards kicked Thomas Saggese from second to third base. José Fermín draws into the lineup at the keystone as the #9 hitter. Contreras was suspended for an on-field violation, which means the Cardinals cannot replace him. They’ll play the next four games with a four-man bench while their opponents have a fifth position player with the expanded roster.

St. Louis made one additional move today. Catcher Yohel Pozo returns from the seven-day concussion list, so the Cards optioned rookie infielder César Prieto back to Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals now have three catchers with Pozo returning to join Pedro Pages and rookie Jimmy Crooks. That might only be the arrangement through the weekend. Katie Woo of The Athletic notes that outfielder Alec Burleson is expected to be activated from the injured list when first eligible on Monday.

Suspension shouldn’t have been reduced it was too short to being with. 10 games down to 7 sounds right to me. Cant throw a bat.

.260/.356/.460 with 55 Home Runs in parts of 3 seasons so far with the Cardinals. That’s not bad and way to late for buyer’s remorse

Not at all. We need his makeup. Plus, if you watch the highlight, he was walking away from the plate and the ump followed him. Totally uncalled for.

Over halfway through the contract, I’m sure the Cardinals would gladly sign it again he’s been a very good player every year. 125 OPS+ in StL.

Bring on RoboUmp now. We will have so much fewer outbursts and suspensions.

I’d rather they just get rid of the anger generation box they put on tv.
By rule, the strike zone is allowed to change on every single pitch, it is defined by the posture of the batter when he is prepared to swing. And if the computer actually obeyed the rules, there’d more anger than there is now without it.

What’s the “anger generation box”? Is that where the umpire stands?

Okay if we’re getting a dunk tank, then we need Angel Hernandez back, he’s my first choice lol

What does the TV strike zone graphic overlay have to do with anything on-field in realtime? Lol. By definition, an ABS system can’t “disobey” the strikezone parameters it has been programmed with. If a hitter changes his posture, the computer will adjust for every pitch.

During the Dodgers and Giants playoff run in 1962 a fight broke out between the teams, involving WIllie Mays. The announcers were greatly excited and enjoyed the fight great greatly – find it on youtube and listen.

We’ve sterilized baseball now. I say “Kill the UMP!!” – it is part of the game. The 6 day suspension is childish.

I prefer the maximum amount of baseball in my baseball and I prefer that my Hall of Famers not break hands/faces when trying to win baseball games/rings.

Even hockey has goons for that.

Now go rage at people in traffic, punch drywall in your house, and yell at kids on your lawn, my guy.

I like it when the players are competitive and there is conflict and the game is human.

I don’t like it when the game is sterile, as has become, automated, and without a human element.

I watch it for the human drama, otherwise one can find something else more computerized and automated to do.

The game is about controlled violence and the threat of it. You have a player throwing a 2 pound rock as hard as they can at a player with a bat in his hand. genuine bravery to play the game, and emotions run high. At least it did. The inside pitch is all but gone and the competitiveness has been squeezed out of the game.

Players stand at the plate now with more Armour than a Medieval Knight, and refuse to even get out of the way of the pitch. The play at the plate is gone. The take out slide is gone. It is a sanitized version of the real sport. Arguing with umpires and gamesmanship, also being squeezed out of the game which is replacing human beings with video game councils where fans are so bored that the stadium needs aircraft size video screens and flashing disco lights to keep fans involved.

Because of people like you, it is a dieing sport.

Fun fact: a baseball thrown at 100 mph impacts with 292 pounds of force, so yeah, players have some bits of plastic and padding on their lead arm when standing in a batter’s box. Makes sense to me.

Babe Ruth once got ejected for punching an ump after walking the first batter of the game. Not pertinent to this, but….the cool story behind that game is that Ernie Shore came in to relieve him. He retired 27 straight batters, but doesn’t get credited for a perfect game as it was just a combined no-hitter.
