The Rangers are looking for several new bats as they look to, as GM Ross Fenstermaker indicated at season’s end, improve their on-base percentage and contact skills. Newly installed manager Skip Schumaker has already spoken about finding a new offensive identity. One potential target who had popped up on the Rangers’ radar, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar. Goold writes that the Cardinals are open to hearing what other clubs will offer on Nootbaar and adds that the Rangers and at least one other AL club had shown interest in the 28-year-old outfielder. That, however, came prior to the public revelation that Nootbaar was undergoing surgery on both heels to address Haglund deformities.
At present, it’s not clear whether Nootbaar will be ready for Opening Day. Newly minted Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said two weeks ago that Opening Day is neither firmly off the table nor a guarantee for Nootbaar. His readiness (or lack thereof) is still up in the air and hinges on the speed of his recovery. It’s also not clear to what extent (if any) the procedure has cooled the Rangers’ interest.
Even if Texas is out on Nootbaar entirely, the team’s interest in him is telling in some regards. On paper, the Rangers seem to have a full outfield. Wyatt Langford, Evan Carter and Adolis García are currently projected to line up from left to right field. However, García is coming off two consecutive poor seasons at the plate and projected to earn more than $12MM in what’ll be his final trip through the arbitration process. Given his recent struggles, mounting price tag and the Rangers’ desire to improve their on-base and contact skills, García stands as a trade candidate or non-tender candidate. Interest in Nootbaar, whose best defensive grades have come in right field — the same position García occupies in Texas — at least supports the notion that García is on somewhat shaky ground.
Nootbaar’s projected $5.7MM salary in arbitration is less than half that of García. He also sports one of the lowest chase rate on balls out of the strike zone, per Statcast: 26th lowest among (21.5%) among the 215 big league hitters who took at least 400 plate appearances in 2025. García, conversely, has the 26th-highest chase rate at a whopping 35.1%. Nootbaar’s 20.4% strikeout rate isn’t all that far south of league average, but it’s several ticks lower than that of García. Additionally, Nootbaar’s contact rate is about four percentage points higher than average, while his swinging-strike rate is about 3.5 percentage points lower than average.
There’s little sense in reading too heavily into one individual target, but interest in Nootbaar supports the idea that the Rangers, who had the tenth-highest chase rate in MLB as a team and the eight-worst walk rate, are looking for a different type of approach at the plate. Nootbaar, like García, draws strong defensive marks for his corner outfield work. He lacks García’s raw power but still makes hard contact at plus levels.
The salary discrepancy between the two players is of some note, too. When announcing at season’s end that Bruce Bochy would not be returning as the Rangers’ manager, president of baseball operations said that when Bochy was hired in 2022, the team had “a little more certainty in terms of payroll” before adding, “We don’t have that at this point” (link via Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News).
That doesn’t necessarily indicate that Texas will gut payroll in extreme fashion this winter, but Nootbaar’s salary is far more palatable than a projected $12.1MM for García. Texas finished the 2025 season with a payroll north of $224MM and currently is projected for a $198MM payroll in 2026 (per RosterResource) before making a single offseason move.

I’m good unless they send Sonny gray and 20 million as well.
I could see all kinds of trade possibilities with the Rangers. Arenado perhaps with Jung coming back. Burger is from the St Louis area too.
Jung is better then Arenado at this point I wanted him 5 years ago.
If Arenado is healthy hes better. Jung is who knows what.
The only way I’m doing that is if you give us Sonny gray and Nolan and pay most of their contracts.
Arenado isn’t bringing back anyone with potential. All you’re doing with an Arenado trade is shedding some dollars off the books. Acquiring an asset is a non option today.
I agree
Arenado can bring back something if salary is paid. Of course he has negative value with the contract. Nootbaar has positive trade value. Rangers could use Romero he certainly does too. A deal could be worked out assuming the Rangers are going for it and the Cardinals are not.
You can pay his salary down to $0 and Josh Jung is still more valuable. Arenado is 35 and doesn’t look like he has anything left offensively.
Combine that with the fact that he only wants to play for a handful of teams and has a NTC. The cards will either value a small cash saving & a roster spot or they can hang on and hope he goes back in time in the first half. Today he’s bringing back as much as Ramon Urias.
Arenado was playing pretty well the first half of last year. Look it up. He fell off because he got hurt and was playing through it. The question is can he ever get fully healthy again.
I think if you paid his salary down to 0 he has more value than Jung. Not a lot more but more. Jung is a question mark who knows what he is.
.305 OBP and .693 OPS in the first half. He’s 35 years old.
Remove his name and look at stats and you have a 35 year old Ramon Urias. He doesn’t have value.

====================
The stats I would look at:
Probably still has 18 HR power with a good glove
His BABIP was .241, well below his career .288. That suggests positive reversion.
This is not to suggest he’s a great option. But, as a RS fan,
if we had to trade Mayer to get a #2 SP, then I’d be okay with Arenado at maybe $7M per.
I wouldn’t trade a Jung baseball card for Arenado
Sonny gray contract paid rangers might do it.
Gray has to accept the trade just like Arenado would. I think he might. Cardinals could use Jung, maybe Burger, and pitching prospects like that guy from Tennessee the Rangers just drafted Russell. The Cardinals drafted Doyle and Franklin from Tennessee last year so he could be a good fit and fills a need.
If StL is willing to swap Gray + $10M and take Pederson back, then add Nootbaar + Crooks to send to Texas…
Full trade:
Gray + Nootbaar + Crooks + $10M
for
Pederson + Burger + Alejandro Rosario* + Emiliano Teodo + Ezequiel Duran
*not on 40-man
Rosario and Teodo won’t be in that deal.
If Rosario and Teodo weren’t included the Cardinals would have no interest at all. None.
Even as the deal is now I dont think I would do it. Crooks is valuable. I agree he’s makes sense for the Rangers and the Cardinals wouldn’t miss him. I like the overall concept and agree the needs for each teams are getting met I just think the Cardinals would need more if they aren’t actually saving money by dealing Gray.
Rocker and Russell instead of Rosario and Teodo. I think I would do that.
Russell is more likely to be in this deal.
Yo homie, go over to LSB if you want to understand how trades work. STL needs arms and they ain’t taking AAAA types. If you want to get the deal done you gotta include some decent arms.
I would probably personally do that, but I don’t think the Rangers want to trade Rosario. He was a top hundred prospect before he got hurt.
They are in their “winning window”, or what’s left of it with those big contracts on the books. Schue was not brought in to rebuild this thing, they’re trying to win now. Gray and Nootbaar answer those immediate needs, not done yet but that’s a start. There is supposed to be a lot of activity this offseason with the uncertainty of the CBA after next year, make big moves now. Rosario is great but he’s worth dealing, the only untouchable is Walcott.
Make the deal, now. Decisively!
I would rather a Sonny gray contreras package without Nootbar
Rocker ain’t in that trade, not for a likely one year deal for Gray (no way they’d pick up his option for ‘27). Swap Russell for Teodo, that works.
Again if the Cardinals are taking Pederson plus paying 10 million they aren’t saving any money from the Gray deal. And thats ok but if thats the case they will need something from the Rangers for what Gray is worth. Burger isnt worth much. Duran is barely worth anything. Its just not enough.
Swap Duran for Josh Smith (gold glover in ‘24), done deal.
Y’all still gotta move Arenado and I’m hearing Donovan is also getting dealt. Make this deal with Texas and get to work on the other deals.
Bring on more $$$ for Contreras? They’re trying to shed and not add, no thanks.
Josh Smith is a good player I like the value but I think the Rangers should keep him.
I do think there is a deal to be made here for sure. The Cardinals taking Pederson hoping he bounces back and can later be flipped makes sense. Jung makes sense if Arenado is gone. Burger makes sense if Contreras is gone. The teams needs do line up well
The Rangers aren’t going to get better while shedding payroll. Thats a difficult thing to do.
Arenado and Contreras are not coming to Texas. Jung isn’t leaving, but Duran and Smith need to go somewhere to play everyday because they can’t do that in Texas. If the deal isn’t there because you need to move Arenado or Contreras then best of luck this offseason, Texas ain’t your trade partner.
I heard the PNW is looking for some CIF boppers, but make a deal soon before Dipoto decides to sign the Polar Bear.
Really? I disagree…
The Cardinals aren’t looking for good big leaguers with limited team control left. Thats not what they want or need they are looking for prospects or bounce back guys.
Could the Rangers make a deal where they get better and dont spend money? Yeah its possible but if so then big time prospects are going to have to be dealt. You aren’t getting a guy like Gray and not paying for him while only giving up decent prospects. Not to mention Crooks and Nootbaar too.
Ok here you go
Gray
Liberatore
Gorman
Romero
20 million
For
Peterson
Russell
Walcott
If you’re gonna start presenting scenarios where they’re swapping underwater contracts, why not work Semien into the deal.
With the Cardinals middle infield picture already jammed up, there aren’t many teams that are a worse fit for Semien
I doubt anyone wants to pay for the remainder of that contract for great defense and below-average hitting.
Does Nootbaar represent a buy/sell low candidate at this point? I really like most of what he does, but it doesn’t add up to the results you’d want. It feels like it’s just right there to be had though.
It’s good plate discipline and contact rates. He hits the ball hard. But it feels like in the past, he hit the ball on the ground too much to get the power outcomes his raw power suggests is in there and then this year he hit the ball in the air, but he didn’t pull his fly balls so still didn’t end up with great power output and that approach comes with lower BABIPs. The big standout to me is that he doesn’t hit line drives. Only 17.8% for his career. His numbers read like his plate discipline comes from seeing the ball longer and letting it travel so that when he does make swing, he’s catching the ball deeper in the earlier part of the swing when it’s on a downward path. Then in an effort to lift the ball more this past season, it was done with more loft in the swing plane and still letting the ball travel deep as opposed to simply starting earlier and catching the ball out front. That approach led to fly balls that were more often to the big part of the park.
You still want the selective approach but you also want him to get his swing off. As a Blue Jay fan I’d love to pair him with David Popkins to see if you could get him in attack mode a little more and get his line drive rates up to league average or above. I feel like that would up the BABIP more than enough to offset any slight decline in the walk rate and would tap into some of the slugging potential. But at the same time, you have all the ingredients and still have to bake the pie. Coupled with the fact that his defensive floor doesn’t seem to be there anymore (just injury related I’d hope), and you’re looking at a guy with only 2.5 WAR and 103 wRC+ over the past two seasons. There’s still risk even if you really believe in the upside. Especially if he’s going to miss spring training. Feels like the Cardinals are better off letting him get back healthy in game shape and trying to make those improvements themselves before trading him, or just keeping him if things are on the rise again late next year.
That whole Cardinal outfield needs to go. Nootbar, Scott and Walker all need to be shipped out and needs a rebranding.
“Conversely” has to START the sentence, not come in the middle, between commas. And there shouldn’t be a comma before “too.”
