With holes to fill in the lineup, the Red Sox are exploring two of the bigger free agent bats on the market. WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reports that “the Red Sox have shown interest in” Bo Bichette, and MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that the club has likewise “checked in on Kyle Schwarber.”
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow’s recently commented that Boston is looking to add extra pop to its lineup, and either player would certainly fit in this regard. Schwarber is an elite power bat coming off a career year, hitting 56 homers and slashing .240/.365/.563 over 724 plate appearances for the Phillies. Bichette rebounded from an injury-shortened down year in 2024 to hit .311/.357/.483 with 18 homers over 628 plate appearances for the Blue Jays this sesason.
The injury bug did bite again for Bichette, as a knee sprain kept Bichette sidelined for most of September and most of the Jays’ playoff run until he was able to return in the World Series, but he still did plenty to re-establish himself as one of the preeminent infield bats in the sport. MLB Trade Rumors ranked Bichette second on our list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents, and projected the shortstop to land an eight-year, $208MM contract.
Schwarber ranked ninth on the list with a five-year, $135MM projection. Schwarber is entering his age-33 season and is basically a full-time designated hitter, but while teams have traditionally been wary of committing major dollars to such aging and defensively limited players, Schwarber’s numbers are so outsized that he’ll very likely command a lengthy contract. There is also a sense that his market could be driven upwards by the Phillies, who have been very open about their desire to re-sign the slugger.
The Red Sox are very familiar with Schwarber, as he posted big numbers and quickly became a clubhouse favorite after Boston acquired him from the Nationals at the 2021 trade deadline. Schwarber was just a rental pickup as he entered free agency that winter and signed his four-year, $79MM deal with Philadelphia. On paper, Schwarber might not be an entirely ideal fit for the Sox since he’ll monopolize the DH spot and add another left-handed bat to an already lefty-leaning lineup, but these could be relatively minor concerns given the upside of Schwarber’s offense.
Bichette is a right-handed hitter, but his defensive fit is an open question, as whether or not Bichette remains at shortstop will be one of the key subplots of his free agency. Bichette’s defense has been a question mark for years, and such public metrics as Defensive Runs Saved (-12) and Outs Above Average (-13) hated his glovework in 2025.
In the early days of the offseason, suitors “haven’t been scared off of Bichette at shortstop,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan writes, and it isn’t yet known if Bichette and his reps at Vayner Sports are marketing him strictly as a shortstop, or if Bichette is open to a position change. He did make his big league debut at second base during the World Series, in a nod to the physical limitations of his PCL sprain.
As it relates to the Red Sox, Trevor Story is lined up as the team’s shortstop. Story’s own defensive metrics were well below average in 2025, marking a surprising decline for a player who has been a very strong defensive shortstop for much of his career. Breslow has said that Story will play shortstop next year, but since Story has shown a willingness to play other positions in the past (he was Boston’s regular second baseman when healthy in 2022), it is possible some shifting could go on within the Sox infield. The simpler solution would be to just slot Bichette at second base alongside Story at shortstop, or Bichette could potentially factor into Boston’s third base picture.
The Sox have a prominent free agent infielder of their own in Alex Bregman, who MLBTR projects for a six-year, $160MM contract. This puts Bregman as less expensive than Bichette and only a bit pricier than Schwarber. Beyond just the cost of pure dollars, the Sox would need to give up draft pick compensation for signing a qualifying offer-rejecting free agent like Bichette or Schwarber, whereas Bregman could be re-signed for just money. Bregman is also a known commodity for the organization, and he made a big impact both on and off the field in his one season in Boston.
That said, Bichette is also almost four years younger than Bregman and five years to the day younger than Schwarber. Top prospect Marcelo Mayer made his MLB debut in 2025 and seems poised to take on a more regular role somewhere in Boston’s infield, so Mayer could conceivably take over Bregman’s old spot at third base while Bichette plays second or shortstop. With Triston Casas rumored to be a trade candidate, first base has also been mentioned as target area for Boston, with names like Pete Alonso, Kazuma Okamoto, and Munetaka Murakami floated as speculative candidates to join the Sox.

I’d rather have Schwarber and Alonso. You know, as long as we’re just spitballin’……..
I wouldn’t want both of those guys together. Alonso will be a dh before long and schwarber can’t play anywhere else.
Whichever team Bichette ends up on it won’t be long before he ends up off SS. Don’t get me wrong, Bo has a great bat. Defensively, he has a great bat.
Even if he ends up with the Jays as i hope, they have 2 “gold glove” SS in Gimenez and Ernie so makes no sense to play Bo not at 2B.
If Clement or Gimenez can play a zero DRS/0 OAA SS that would be a huge defense win. Offensively though…well…you know.
Bichette would be a downgrade from a very average defensive Story for the Sox infield…..
I could see the Sox signing him and moving him the third if they lose bregman.
I could see him starting off at 2B (while Mayer mans 3B), then sliding over to 3B if/when Mayer gets hurt again – all without any complaint.
Yeah that’s another option.
Sox seem like a team I could see trading some players this offseason as well.
Longinus – how could it be that the Sox could just insert him into 3B or 2B? why would we be looking to sign a player and automatically ask them to play another position? At this stage off their careers, if both healthy, he’s probably no worse than Story. Why wouldnt Story move?
And, how do we know he wont complain? the guy hasnt played a game at any position other than SS until the playoffs this season, which is a total anomaly
He doesn’t have the arm for 3B.
@Gray Jay
Agreed. OAA says that he also had problems coming in on ground balls. Coming in for ground balls and a strong arm is pretty much a job description for 3B
These are the right names to be discussing. Biggest need is infield. Hope to see the ink dry. Don’t sell low on Casas!!
What’s better than having one of the worst defensive shortstops in the league on a big contract? Having two of the worst defensive shortstops in the league on big contracts. At least Bo has a decent bat.
Signing either Schwarber or Bo would mean they need to get rid of Yoshida and free up DH ABs.
I don’t see how Bo would relate to Yoshida.
Bo’s defense is questionable at SS, he’ll be a fine 2B and won’t need to be a DH for 10 years.
How would this relate to Bo affecting Yoshida’s DH ABs?
If true Bichette must be being considered for 2B and possibly 3B. Mayer must still be considered the future SS and will play whichever position the Sox can’t fill easily. I like Schwarber but you have to move Yoshida or possibly Casa if Schwarber isn’t an exclusive 1B. The Sox really need a big RH bat to balance out the lefties.
The good news is they have a lot of bats, the bad news is a lot are LH and they can’t keep them all happy without a deal.
Mayer, Campbell, some more unproven top prospects to Pirates for Skenes after signing these two proven players?
dljo – save this comment for next year’s offseason. I dont think you’re wrong.
1) If i were in charge I would trade off the 26 man roster, so Duran or Abreu, Casas with maybe Crawford, Criswell for a SP.
2) Sign a bat free agent.
3) THEN……..in November of 2026 I call Ben Cherington and say, pick any number of players in AAA, AA and A, including Campbell and Early and tell Skenes he plays for the Red Sox now.
That is dumbest thing I have read this year…Early is going nowhere…plenty of smarter packages could land Skenes.
Unfortunately I don’t think Campbell would have much/any value to the Pirates. He’s still owed 58mil with no guarantee of becoming an MLB player – the extension for such a raw player was bad.
If Skenes were to become available the price would exceed the Crochet package by a fair bit. (2 extra cheap years of control and far more of a sure thing)
Thats why I say pick as many as you want….
Interestingly Bichette, Story and Bregman each averaged 82.3mph on their throws last season. That’s average-to-below-average for their positions.
Bichette is younger, so if he’s also cheaper, probably makes sense as a replacement (I’ve been hoping for Marte but that may be wishful thinking). Bichette’s sprint speed has also plummeted over the last two years – not sure how that may impact his defense moving forward.
Bichette isn’t going to be cheaper than Bregman.
We’ll see. I’m a little worried that Bregman’s contract may go crazy OR he’ll hold out long into the offseason, restricting the Red Sox ability to pivot.
In terms of cheaper I was referring to AAV. I certainly expect Bichette to get a longer contract and therefore more overall dollars.
ESPN is expecting Bregman to get more total dollars and a higher AAV while Fangraphs crowdsource has Bichette getting more dollars but a lower AAV.
Bichette will cost the most of that group by a wide margin. He’s certainly breaking $200M
Story isn’t a free agent.
If you’re referring to AAV most public projections have Bregman at a higher number and I haven’t seen a projection yet putting Bichette over 200mil nor have I seen any projection putting him past Bregman in total dollars by anything but a rather slim margin.
His age may elevate the years though, so will be interesting to see.
I’ve seen projections of Bichette signing for 7 years $210M.
Bregman will likely get a bit more than $30M per year but he won’t touch $200M total.
@motown Posting that you’ve ‘seen things’ doesn’t really further the conversation.
Here’s just a few predicting Bichette’s contract
nytimes.com/athletic/6774254/2025/11/04/mlb-free-a…
bluejaysinsider.com/mlb-team/toronto-blue-jays/new…
newsweek.com/sports/mlb/bo-bichette-projected-to-s…
A couple of projections out there since Bichette for signing less than $200M but the majority say over.
@Motown The ‘majority’ do not say this – one guy, who works for a website called ‘just baseball’ says Bichette will get 208mil. I’ve never read an article from ‘just baseball’ and have no idea who ‘Finkelstein’ is so you might as well tell us that your third cousin who once made Bichette a latte said it. Your 2nd and 3rd article are both referencing the same guy in order to have a ‘headline’.
ESPN and Fangraphs actually do projections, and they aren’t a single guy, so they’re actually something to use. Try to avoid any Tom, Dick & Harry who posts online, especially when they’re all referencing the same guy nobody has ever heard of.
He could still get 200mil, nobody knows for sure, but try and educate yourself on this subject if you want to argue it. Thanks.
Exactly how last season started, “the Red Sox are interested in signing (place name here)……..”
i’ll believe it when i see it, but, Bichette is an interesting fit.
However, if they were to sign him, they better inform Story, Mayer and him what the plan is…..the last thing i want to hear at the press conference is “we love Bo for his positional flexibilty”
I think this signals the Red Sox believing Campbell, and his team friendly contract, is a major trade asset in an attempt to acquire a cost controlled SP. How a team views Campbells potential, and if the Sox are selling high/low is anyones guess.
Bichette is atrocios at SS, let Mayer fly and sign Bregman Back
Kyle Schwarber at Fenway fot 81 games instead of 2 months would be insane. He might be able to hit the ball completely out of Fenway. Or hit the ball where allegedly Ted Williams hit the ball. 520ft or something ridiculous like that.
Red Sox should trade Philly an outfielder etc for Aiden Miller who can’t play SS in Philly so long as Turner is there. He’s actually better than most SS in the majors now but Phillies been hanging on to him as their #2 prospect. He can handle 3rd or second well and SS fabulously if needed.
This isn’t something the Red Sox are looking for. Aidan seems like a fine prospect, but probably not quite ready and the Red Sox have a similarly regarded SS prospect in AA, so not a long-term need either (plus Mayer can do all of those things and was a more well-regarded prospect just recently).
Red Sox are looking to acquire 1-2 middle-of-the-order infield bats.
So much for Kristian Campbell…
Thought that once they never recalled him during the season.
He’s looking at becoming a full-time OFer. He needs to learn how to hit sinkers, cutters and splitters while putting on a bit more muscle.
At this point, I’m thinking of him as the long-term Yoshida replacement (long-term could be as early as mid 2026).
They had Kyle once so bringing him back would be nice. I’d become a Red Sox again, if they also get Bichette and some how sign or acquire Cease as well.
We’ve all heard that before their always “interested” in player A ,B, and C but refuse to sign anyone or do anything
Yes last yr they made a few good moves but ones already gone and because they brought him in they traded the best player on the team for a bag of nuts and bolts
Henry is a cheap a-hole till he sells they team don’t expect anything big it will probably be a pitcher who’s going to miss the season or coming off a major injury
I think all the interest reported is likely overstated by reporters looking for clicks. The Red Sox likely call all major free agents to see what they are looking for.
This morning I checked in on the new 2026 Subaru outback until I saw the price then I moved on
But the media always has to have something to report
Even if it is non news
Arthur: Hobson?
Hobson: Yes.
Arthur: Do you know what I’m going to do?
Hobson: No, I don’t.
Arthur: I’m going to take a bath.
Hobson: I’ll alert the media.
Arthur: [rises] Do you want to run my bath for me?
Hobson: That’s what I live for.
[Arthur exits]
The playoff series indicated that we play well without Bo. Jays in need of top relievers, they need to make this their priority, and sign Bichette at a reasonable price and playing 2nd. base if not then sign someone else at ss.
Shatkins appears to be committed to sign him no matter what and the owner gave them a green light. Bo is a fan favourite, so there’s that.
The sox are reluctant to give up draft picks. So my guess is, they will resign Bregman as long as boros doesn’t drag it out and pete alonso. Mayer at 2nd and romy, the Swiss army knife
Boras not dragging negotiations out? That’s rich. Better to save the money, take a shot at Mayer or Story at 3rd, take another shot at Campbell at 2nd or left and trade some of the outfielders, Tolle and Casas for SP’s and a prospect catcher. The only Boras client the Sox should look at should be Japanese
There will be no shortage of suitors for either player and rightfully so
Should have never let Schwarber go in the 1st place back when we had him.
I like that Bichette and Guerrro came up,together. I hope they both play their entire careers in Toronto. It makes a good baseball story.
But I wouldn’t be sad to see Bichette in Boston either.
You sign Bregman at 3rd and slot Mayer at SS and shift Trevor (due to the arm at 2b). But I take Bregman. We don’t need poor D a 2b or SS or 3b…Bregman is the signing to get on our club needs 1st. Love Schwarbs but at 33 for 5 years? Risky, Like seeing where Casas has an opportunity to play a year, sign an extention is he does well. He just needs to be told he is there for 1 reason only…to hit bombs and clear his busy mind of all other things in there, OBP, Walks, blah blah, TC you are in Boston to put the ball in the seats, whatever pitch you hack at to do that is your call but thats the job bruh‼️ If he doesn’t work I guess Alanzo? But hes no stud on D. Go get Bregman and the rest will work out. Obvs ACES 2 of them and infuse the good Bullpen to great.
Infield defense has been a need for the Sox for years. Trading Raffy helped that. So many folks here proposing plugging Bo in at 2nd like his defensive issues would just clean themselves up there…I don’t get it. Yes it’s a less demanding position but a bad glove is a bad glove.
