Kazuma Okamoto’s posting window closes in four weeks’ time, and Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that the six-time NPB All-Star is getting “big interest” from Major League teams. The Pirates and Red Sox have already been linked to Okamoto’s market, and Heyman reports that the Blue Jays are also showing interest.
Okamoto was mostly a third baseman during his time with the Yomiuri Giants, but he also logged a good deal of time as a first baseman and corner outfielder. While he wouldn’t get much time at first base in Toronto due to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s presence, Okamoto’s defensive utility undoubtedly has some appeal to a Blue Jays team that likes to mix and match around its lineup. Third base would probably be Okamoto’s primary position in Toronto, yet his ability to also work in the corner outfield could make him something of a right-handed hitting version of Addison Barger, who is expected to continue operating as a third baseman/right fielder depending on what other winter moves the Jays end up completing.
Bo Bichette naturally looms as the biggest question mark hanging over the Blue Jays’ infield, as Toronto remains engaged with the former All-Star about a reunion. If Bichette re-signs, it might make the infield a little too crowded for Okamoto as well, since that would have the ripple effect of pushing Barger into more or less everyday outfield duty, and leave little playing time for the likes of Ernie Clement or Nathan Lukes. Likewise, if the Jays were to sign another prime offseason target like Kyle Tucker, that pushes Barger into more of a third base role, making Okamoto then redundant.
Trades could alter the roster situation, of course, but whatever team signs Okamoto would surely have designs on him as more than just a part-time player. MLB Trade Rumors ranked Okamoto 19th on our list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents, and projected a four-year, $64MM deal for the 29-year-old. This contract doesn’t factor in the posting fee a big league team would also owe to the Giants, which hinges on the size of Okamoto’s deal — a $64MM contract would translate to an $11.5MM posting free, for instance.
Okamoto has 248 home runs and an outstanding .277/.361/.521 slash line over his career in Japan, though there are always questions about how exactly hitters will adjust in the move from NPB to MLB. In Okamoto’s case in particular, Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen raised some concerns over how the infielder will adjust to the higher velocities of big league pitching, as Okamoto has been inconsistent against pitches over 94mph.
The Blue Jays are broadly an “in on everyone” team that at least checks in on pretty much every available free agent or trade target every winter. It could be that their interest in Okamoto is an extension of his due diligence, since Okamoto wouldn’t be as clean a fit on Toronto’s roster as other winter targets.
That said, the Jays have already added Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to the rotation, and their continued explorations into other big-ticket names indicates that Toronto is prepared to be even more aggressive after coming so close to a World Series title in 2025. The Blue Jays also have a longstanding interest in trying to establish themselves amongst Japanese players and fans, which has involved failed pursuits of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki in the past.

All smoke and no fire on this one. Jays have checked in with the agents of probably every FA out there. My guess is that the agent leaked on this to spur articles and discussion on his guy.
I just don’t see it. They have bigger fish to fry and he just gets in the way of that. Maybe if everything else they’re trying to do falls through he might be a fallback option, but that’s about it.
How many guys do they have to sign before we can drop this narrative. Besides if Bichette doesn’t sign then this gives them other options. Better to be prepared.
Also could be a potential path forward if they are able to sign Tucker . I do not see them giving 3 monster term deals to 3 players in the same year. He will probably get more years , but if Bellinger signs at 4 years I could see him and Bo but tucker probably 11 years , Bo given age at least 7 maybe more . I don’t think they will operate that way .
Jon Heyman report. He’s a shill for Boras.
Yep. Heyman is a speculator, not a reporter.
He’s actually really good on reporting what Boras tells him…
Rumour has it, Kaz has a dog named “Ted”….who’s on a plane headed towards a sushi restaurant….
Don’t you think the baseball industry and baseball journalism in general would have caught on to this “Heyman boosting Boras” narrative by now and done something about it? I mean, it’s a dumb conspiracy theory that makes no sense under scrutiny. You think those baseball POBO’s get thrown off or tricked by Heyman articles??? C’mon smell the roses.
Why would they do anything about it? Noise it may be but it attracts views, clicks, and the misinformation inspires ‘conversation’.
Anecdotally, a database linking rumors to sources would show Heyman (and a few others) linking the leaks to certain – often unnamed – agents or teams repeatedly and frequently without credibility.
The roses? Heyman, and those others, help keep the gang here at MLBTR busy.
Haha!!
Well the world of baseball journalism is a small incestuous clan. There are only so many rumors to leak and outlets to leak them too. Yeah I don’t dispute the farming for clicks I was mainly pushing back against the idea that Heyman is a conduit for Boras to get teams to bid against each other thus driving up free agent prices.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s just seems unfathomable that it works so I have to wonder why bother
Unfortunately he is. He will almost always get the scoop on Boras signings. He gets a few other tidbits but almost always gets trades wrong.
Boras is the direct source.
I’m not sure I see the fit. Pushing Barger to RF puts him in a worse defensive position with a -4 DRS there in 2025. Although he wasn’t amazing at 3B, defensively, he had a +1 DRS there in 2025. If they’re planning to trade Barger and sign a real RFer and Okamoto, then sure that makes sense.
I’m not saying he is a good RF but I am saying that a 50 game sample size of defensive data, for someone who has played less than 100 games (including minors) at that position, is effectively worthless
I think your right Dusty , too small a sample size for metrics that can be noisy at times for full season worth of games. They traded for a carried a 1b in France in Oct for options other than clement playing 1b . It does make sense they would explore options for someone with added bonus of ability to play 1b if needed . Tho I have assumed we would see Santander get a ton of spring reps at 1b for added line up versatility
The point of Ty France was to have a good defensive first baseman backup. Santander just gives you another bad one.
I agree , but they aren’t going to carry a 1b for that purpose during the season. He’s also a bad OF and you have 2 DH going into next year.
Although he led all players with a 5 DRS in the playoffs in OF. With the Jessie Barfield like arm in RF I wouldn’t mind it.
Pretty sure the one throw home in the Seattle series was clocked at 98mph and an absolute bullseye. Barger can only get better with his routes as he gets more familiar with the position and can still backup 3rd. Think Atkins is banking on regression from guys so is going to get some quality depth to challenge the likes of Lukes and Clement
Nobody is challenging Clement. He is a full time player no matter what the Jays go out and get. Give the man the respect he deserves.
@TheBoatmen
There is no data on Fangraphs, Savant, or Baseball Reference supporting that Barger put up a 5 DRS in the playoffs. As best as I can determine, that number came from an AI Google search. A 5 DRS in that small sample is impossible unless he was making plays in LF while playing in right.
Does anyone use DRS for OFs anymore? I think people have said it still has some value for infielders but the Statcast metrics are far better for OFs and he was a +1 in fielding run value in RF. No matter what metric you use, it’s all going to be noisy with the sample sizes available anyway.
Old York at this present time there is no doubt Barger is a better 3B.
However, would it be fair to say an offseason plus Spring Training to fully prepare for RF help him be a better defensive player? Would his numbers be better if opposing teams tested his arm more? Those metrics rise if he throws out more runners in the outfield. His arm is a game changer out there. Not advocating this but the offseason can do some things.
@its_happening
Fair enough. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
If the Jays are in on Okamoto then they should be equally in on Eugenio Good Vibes Only Suarez. I could see him & Vlad having a blast together. It will be like the old days throwing seeds in the dugout with Teo and Lourdes.
This is Garbage. Barger will be the third baseman, Vladdys locked into 1B for the next 11 years, santander and Springer DH. There is no room for Okamoto.
If they resign Bo there is a good chance Barger is mostly in RF
Santander could get traded🤷♂️
Every team checks on every free agent. He will go to the highest bidder, probably the Dodgers.
Not every Japanese player goes to the Dodgers.
Not every Japanese player ends upon a plane to Toronto
He seems like a plan B for a lot of teams.
Bichette will be playing 2B & Gimenez will be the SS moving forward
Problem is Bo will want to be paid like a top SS
I would be fine with that. He’s an amazing hitter and would arguably be more valuable at second base anyways. He hit .441 with a .516 wOBA against fastballs 97+ last year. He’s built for the playoffs; where you’re going to see tons of elite pitching.
Pirates need to be out on the Japanese 3B
I think they should make a trade for Arrenado & sign Goldschmidt and bring their professionalism to this young team
Also bring back McCutchen. Mix these professional vets with the youngsters and let them learn.
You trying to make an Old Timers Game team?
Horowitz, Gonzalez,Konner Griffen, Cruz, The Password all don’t seem to be part of an Old Timer Line Up & Reynolds is not that old.
Not bad to have some professional veterans around the young kids
I agree about making a push for this guy. It’s a no-brainer if he’s what they hope he is. But beyond him, this isn’t the kind of franchise that’s going to suddenly decide to spend way out of its “budget” to bring in other high end salaries. Cutch lives here and essentially took a hometown discount but the other guys?
They’re supposedly “in on” trades for younger guys they can control somewhat while kids like Griffin come up the pipeline and willing to trade from their depth of quality young pitching. While I agree they need 2-3 bats in this anemic lineup, reality says that perhaps paying for one banger and bringing in promising ready to go guys makes more sense
BC continues to wait.
IMO the Blue Jays should leave Barger at third and see if he can “hone” his craft and become a decent/good third baseman. it is easier to find outfielders but third baseman not so much, especially ones that can hit with power.
With the admission that I paid close attention to the Jays only during the playoffs, Barger, Clement, and Lukes look to me like nifty young players that you could let develop for another year or two while devoting $ to other areas of need..
Lukes is not a young player at 31 years old, Clement is 29
As much as I like Lukes, he was more of a lightening in a bottle type that is a good lefty bat off the bench but is easily upgraded. Barger and Clement on the other hand are both easily everyday players with a title contender.
Clement is 29 , Luke’s is 31 .
Given their hitting profile those 2 probably are what they are already .
So what you’re saying is Erndog is an all star level utility guy who’s gonna have a high average and long at bats cause he fouls everything off
It wasn’t intended to be a negative . clement is incredibly valuable . It was more a response to the comment about them being young players who could develop further .
Lukes yes.
Clements bat to ball skills are insane and also fantastic defensively
I hope the Pirates sign him, seems like the only real chance they have at a good upgrade.
The issue with all three of the big NPB stars is you have to get a deal done sooner than anyone else, so you either really have to ramp up the chase on more proven commodities possibly escalating their prices or take a chance here. All three are no doubting signing somewhere, I just think GMs need their evaluation process ramped up.
Okamoto’s posting window closes on about the 4th of January, so really there is plenty of time. I think a lot of deals get done this coming week!
This guy is plan c at best. Nothingburger.
Agents have card blanche in terms of leaking “interest shown by Toronto”, the FO just doesn’t care. They peddle word salad with most answers so what’s a radish throne in here and there. Being still all in on B0-2 is a surprise to me. You don’t sign all that pitching, or draft all the SS they have to have a SS in the bottom few starting shortstops defensively in MLB. Seen a good three quarters of his MLB games nobody will be more disappointed than the fans who get Bo for 35mil and he averages 10hr and 170 hits a year as his bat speed slowly declines and that cartoon leg kick and little league approach never changes with pretty awful left side infield defense. This whole Bo to third thing is laughable. He can’t throw from SS and Vlad legitimately saves 5-10 errors a year for him. On a personal note he never dives and is never near top in range stats, it sounds picky until you watch, and you will see, or rather not see. What world series winning team has a SS who NEVER dives on defense? I’d give him Ceases contract to play second nothing deferred with an out after two. Take it or leave it. Sorry for the rant but let’s be real, Jays will enquire enough to be considered serious but not enough that he calls them back outside of his market tanking. Rogers Sportsnet loves content.
Corey Seager dives on defense?
Really just a lot of nonsense in this comment!!!
How so?
Where are you reading Bo is asking for a 35 Mil AAV??? You and I do not have any idea what his asking price is or the term he is seeking!!! This site has him at 8 years 208 Mil = 26 mil a year if that is how the contract is set up (plenty of variables involved Signing bonus etc.) You say you would give him Ceases contract??? that is 7 years and 210 Mil = 30Mil AAV!!! You have no idea when his bat speed declines could be 5 years down the road and 2 WS wins in his pocket!!! you also state Bo does not return Jays calls unless his market tanks???
Yeah no that comment is very fair. Bo is one of if not the worst everyday SS in MLB .his range at SS is one of if not the worst in position also .
Possible leveraging situation, using the Jays to get more bids. The Jays are more prone to solidify their defense, and if this guy isn’t a strong defender at third he’s not coming unless it’s a desperation signing.
What I should have said.
I don’t know, it was an emotional statement backed up by fact. Is Seagers range and arm terrible? I know comparing his career statistically, defense and offense, up to age 27 to Bo’s is insulting to Seager. Achievement wise, on no planet is Bo better. If seager WAS that bad defensively and still managed to bring his teams where he brought them then that just reinforces how great he was. I believe Bo is no longer a fit on this team as long as he wants SS and or SS money. They proved it in the playoffs and with the guys coming I don’t think they want 30 something Bo clogging SS or being paid that to play second long term. Although playing second productively being paid as a SS is manageable.
Seager versus Bichette through age 27.
Seager bWAR: 20.9; G -1131; PA-4887
Bichette bWAR 21.0; G-748; PA-3,292
Comparing the two is in no way an insult to Seager.
I’m a Dodger fan, by the way. Seager’s unwillingness to dive is long known.
Ok. So Seager doesnt dive. He won a rookie of the year and a world series not diving. I clearly stated his not diving was a personal thing. It the coupling of no range and no diving and bad throwing as a SS that gets my goat. How was Seagers range? His arm? His leadership ability to be so young and playing SS for a premiere team? I hate pumping up Seager but he is clearly the more professionally successful player. In other words he’s had a better career and proven to be a better player.
As a Dodgers fan you mark my words if they sign him at 35 mil, you will be as happy as you are paying Teoscar what you overpay him. Shapiro doesn’t overpay. Vlad was a unicorn.
Funny how all the rumors/action is around Okamoto and not Murakami, who is quite a bit younger and the far bigger name in Japan. Wonder if Murakami will end up a big bargain for someone will to take a risk.
his ability to also work in the corner outfield
=========================
FWIW, he’s not an outfielder. He had 9 starts in the OF in 2017, and gets credit for another 9 games in 2022, but without details other than he had 7 chances.
@JoeBrady
Nice work! Thanks
likely just a matter of they talked to his agent (like they basically do with everyone), but also funny to see people who said they should sign both Tucker and bichette say they can’t do Okamoto and Tucker.
A few years back the chemistry of a playoff team was shaken up by trading away a Teoscar….
Fast forward…the current danger is bringing in too many “elite” players that kinda wreck the chemistry of the blue collar Jays
Just sayin’…
He has trouble against pitches above 94. Not a good fit for a team that values contact above all. And it seems that he’s not as good as either of the guys who’d have to move to make room for him — Barger or Clement. Pass,
