Miguel Rojas will play his final season as a Dodger. The World Series hero is reportedly in agreement with Los Angeles on a one-year, $5.5MM contract. Rojas, a client of Beverly Hills Sports Council, announced in October that he would retire after the 2026 season. He’ll reportedly jump right into a player development position with the Dodgers once his playing career is finished. That’ll push the team’s 40-man roster count to 38 once it’s official.
It’ll be Rojas’ fourth consecutive season in L.A. and his fifth as a Dodger overall. He broke into the majors with the team in 2014 but was traded to the Marlins after his rookie year. Rojas spent eight seasons in Miami, much of it as an everyday shortstop, until the Fish traded him back to the Dodgers over the 2022-23 offseason. He has worked in a utility role for the past three seasons and has been a strong contributor off the bench for Dave Roberts in the most recent two years.
Rojas owns a .273/.328/.404 batting line across 654 plate appearances in the past two seasons. He remains one of the toughest players in the league to strike out. Rojas is no longer an everyday shortstop but can back up Mookie Betts while logging more time between second and third base. He remains a quality utility piece who has also been regarded as a clubhouse leader in Miami and Los Angeles. The Dodgers intend to keep him in the organization beyond his playing days, which reflects his clearly strong relationship with the coaching staff and front office.
That all made it likely that the Dodgers would bring Rojas back regardless of what happened in the postseason. He then cemented himself in franchise lore and baseball history with one of the most dramatic, improbable home runs of all time.
Roberts penciled Rojas into the starting lineup for Games 6 and 7 of the World Series. He came up with one out in the ninth inning of the decider against Jeff Hoffman. With the Dodgers trailing by one, Rojas (who has never hit more than 11 home runs in a season) took Hoffman deep to left field to tie the game. It was one of the most impactful single plays ever, and the Dodgers went on to win in extras when Will Smith homered off Shane Bieber.
That one swing probably doesn’t have much bearing on Rojas’ contract. His $5.5MM salary is narrowly above the $5MM that he made in both 2024 and ’25. The Dodgers were very likely to bring him back to continue playing a utility role regardless. He’ll offer a right-handed complement to lefty hitting Max Muncy and Hyeseong Kim around the infield. The Dodgers could look to re-sign Kiké Hernández for a similar job, though that again wouldn’t leave much playing time for well-regarded prospect Alex Freeland.
The Dodgers have a projected payroll of $337MM for next season, according to RosterResource. A good portion of that money is deferred, of course. Their competitive balance tax number — which adjusts for contracts’ post-deferral values — sits at an estimated $319MM. They’re already in the top tax bracket and pay the highest fees as three-time repeat payors, meaning they’re hit with a 110% tax on any additions. They’ll pay $6.05MM in taxes on this deal, bringing the overall investment to $11.55MM. That’s not much by Dodgers standards, and they’ll hope Rojas plays a role in becoming the first team to win three straight titles since the 1998-2000 Yankees.

World Series hero, OOTP darling
knew he’d be back for one last hurrah
It would have been pretty messed up if they didn’t
Agree. I don’t love the signing simply from an offense perspective, but I love the loyalty. Guy earned it.
I mean, he hit .274 over the last two seasons. Not exactly shabby
Sentimental hogwash!
2014 is a llllllloooooonnnnngggggg time ago my man
Didn’t the Giants sign someone recently?
Threw him a little extra for the dinger. Nice move Dodgers. I still hate you, but I like the little reward towards his retirement.
Excellent post.
Who is your team?
Still a terrific value at that price for what Rojas brings to the table.
Agreed, most great teams have guys that do the little things, the things that don’t show up on a scoresheet but are invaluable over the course of 162 plus.
He’s definitely that to the Dodgers. They have a few guys they are invaluable in many ways. Regardless of what the stats guys say.
how many do it when everything is on the line?
The next Dodgers manager
Justin Turner may push for that job.
They both might need to wait a while for Dave to step down.
Both would be excellent in player development.

Who?
You don’t really follow baseball much, do you?
You don’t really know sarcasm lol. Remember when Rojas made a diving play to save Kershaw’s 13 strikeout No-Hitter against the Rockies in 2014?
My bad dude. I’ve been a huge Rojas fan since they brought him up and was (am?) still sore about when they traded him to Miami lol
I live in the SF bay area so you’ll have to forgive me. I’m surrounded by Giants fans who largely know nothing about baseball besides “2010, 2012, 2014” and Mays/McCovey so I didn’t even consider that your comment might be sarcasm!
Nah no worries man, I should’ve been nicer in my previous response.
Based on your experiences with fans of a team that can never finish above .500, I understand where you’re coming from.
I’m in DC and Rojas has always dominated the Nationals, both during successful and miserable eras.
I respect the guy and his playing ability, and the Dodgers do not win Game 6 without his defense. We all know they definitely don’t win Game 7 without him either. I heard allegations from young players about him hazing them in Miami, but I haven’t heard much more on that apart from 1 YouTube video that was made by a Mets fan.
Btw, I think the Dodgers will 3-peat. Their 2026 World Series victory sadly won’t be as dramatic as this year’s.
Nice. He’s going to get a standing MiggyRo whenever he’s introduced at Dodger Stadium. Great to hear he’ll be staying with the organization afterwards. A future coach or manager for sure.
That was a pretty obvious move, but it’s nice to see him finish his career with the Dodgers.
Yeah, makes sense. Guy essentially saved their season.
Great mop up pitching move!
Kike Hernandez enters the chat …
Kike Hernandez is free agent. They don’t need two mop up righties.
but Kiké has a special pitching helmet. He gets the nod for comedic value.
A player they’d rather have up when it matters than Tucker…..and a lot cheaper!
Signing Miggy and pursuing Tucker have no bearing whatsoever on each other
LOL
No
Freeland will be spending plenty of time on the OKC-LA shuttle next season….
Freeland might get more playing time if Dodgers move Hyeseong Kim. But Freeland has not shown that he has the bat to become the heir apparent to Muncy.
Why move Kim? Hopefully, this coming year will be his breakout season.
Let’s see if Kim, now fully healthy, seems less overmatched by MLB pitching. His baseman’s speed, defense and clubhouse presence are all assets.
Agreed. I really like Kim. Spark plug type of guy. He was a star in Korea and is now a super utility says a whole lot about what type of guy he is. I hope he continues to play well.
Kim is purely depth and bench option until he shows he can hit. I like him as a bench option.
They’re all super stars in Korea. Pitching much easier there. Jung Hoo Lee and Ha Seong Kim were much better hitters in Korea, and in MLB one is just above average and the other just below average. This likely points to Kim being below average hitter at MLB, which is fine for a bench player if he has other qualities like glove, speed and defensive versatility.
This is an example of the gaping difference between teams that have and spend money and those who don’t. The back up utility guy is making $5.5M. Such depth is hard to beat.
Swan
Atlanta just traded for and signed Mauricio Dubon to a similar role with a similar 2025 WAR and for a hair more money.
Don’t let facts ruin a good narrative…
No brainer. Game 7 hero and legend in LA.
This is why I don’t believe Dodgers will do much this winter as adding a Bellinger, Tucker, Diaz would mean 110% tax hit on top of final contract. Imagine paying Tucker $400 million which would be $810 million !!! Other words it’s NOT happening period.
Naturally! Wouldn’t want it any other way for the guy.
“easy threepeat” lol. Good one.
I know. And the Dodgers don’t have a bunch of roided up players. Gosh, how do they do it?
I guess re-sign Kike and keep the band together for another year
Would be a bad move from an organizational standpoint (always need some turnover anf opportunities for young players) but probability is 50/50.
Kike should be a Dodger next season.
They still have to fill left field with new blood.
And regarding young players. If they are excellent they can fill in when someone is injured. Otherwise they get chances on other teams when they are traded.
In a few years they will likely promote some of the minor league guys. But for now they are on all in mode.
I’m hoping they trade for Byron Buxton now that he’s willing to be traded.
He’d be the perfect fit.
I’m not sure I can share your enthusiasm for Buxton. He’s another strikeout machine on the wrong side of 30 with three years to go on his contract. He’d be at least a $30M man in LA due to the CBT, unless the Dodgers got the Twins to take on salary, and that would require sending them some quality prospects. More than one.
They paid Conforto $17m so $15m isn’t really an issue, even with the CBT.
2025 stats
WAR 4.9
AB 488
Hits 129
HR 35
BA .264
Sounds like he’d be perfect for the Dodgers. Plays gold glove outfield as well. Dodgers have the depth to allow him to rest or allow for injuries. What’s not to like? If Dodgers had that season from Conforto they would have won more games. And he would have been on the playoff roster.
His contract can escalate to $25M with the performance bonuses, so this is the number the Dodgers have to double for budgetary purposes. I’m not trying to be the Dodgers’ bookkeeper, but that is something else (other than previously stated) not to like. This is why I prefer Donovan. Different hitting profile but overall roughly equal, and more positional flexibility.
Again, $17m for Conforto to be terrible. $15m-$25m for Buxton to be very good to great.
His incentives are plate appearances and MVP voting of he names the top 10.
If he can name top 10 in MVP voting he’s likely having a season the Dodgers would pay extra for. If he hits his plate appearance bonuses he’s likely healthy and available. Which would give you excellent results within the Dodgers lineup and on the field.
It’s worth the money.
The Conforto contract was a complete bust, so not a great comp for anyone. They didn’t sign him to be terrible, obviously.
Check out career OPS+: Buxton (114); Donovan (117).
The main reason for them being so similar despite Buxton’s power advantage is his pretty awful OBP and whiff rate. Donovan is much better at getting on base and making contact. So it seems to me you might be overvaluing Buxton, especially in comparison to Donovan.
I’m not one of those fans who tries to figure out what a player is “worth.” But I know that the Dodgers don’t (despite what some claim) have an infinite budget. Buxton seems like a luxury item that they really don’t need.
He’ll fit in perfect on the Dodgers richly populated IL.
Yup. And be ready to dominate down the stretch and postseason. Similar to the starting pitching.
Buxton probably costs Pages and Rushing and who knows who else.
Buxton’s injury history and price tag might scare a lot of teams away
No idea who the Twins would be after, but I am not convinced that the Buxton contract is loaded with excess value. I believe if the Dodgers are motivated to get him that they could give up some top prospects in exchange for the Twins taking on some of his salary.
Atlanta is where he really wants to go. But they might not have the trade pieces.
He would be ideal for the Dodgers, but they have other options if it doesn’t happen.
I believe his full name is Miguelrojas Ofallpeople.
Or Miguelrojas Noway.
He has the same middle name as Bucky Dent.
Was clutch when it mattered most in the playoffs. Even if Father Time decline appears the Dodgers probably can afford to burn a regular season roster spot. A playoff roster spot is a different matter if things haven’t gone as planned during the regular season for miggy.
Dodgers issue is roster space. Assuming health – even though there will always be health issues – with Miggy on the roster, that leaves two spots. One goes to the LH outfielder they need to bring in. The other could be Kim or Freeland. But honestly, a bench of Call, Miggy, Kim or Freeland and Rushing is not a great bench. Doubt the team wants to fill two bench spots with Freeland and Kim. Kim seems odd man out in that scenario but can they stash him in AAA without his consent?
Kim is on a minor league deal, so there’s that.
They haven’t resigned Kike yet. Rushing is backup catcher at the moment.
If they trade for Buxton, which I hope they do, there will be some pieces moved so they could free up spots.
Only a few have ever had a moment like that.
but when they do they apparently should automatically retire just to make it the ultimate in legitimacy or something like that.
Fine
His 90 wRC+, 0.8 fWAR/280 projection is a fringe starter.
Ideally, he’s the second IF backup with the Dodgers acquiring a starter at 2B (and the OF) and making Edman the supersub.
Sentimentally, I hope they re-sign Kiké and trade Call.
glorious
Our game 7 hero is back!
Worth paying Rojas $5.5M JUST for that legendary HR. Rojas may hardly play next year. Dodgers need to get Hyeseong Kim playing 2B daily. He’s 26, in his prime. Bat on ball skills, tremendous speed and strong D. Could be a big run scorer batting 9th with Ohtani behind him.
now to trade Teo and find a way to get Buxton
Stoked to see Miggy Ro finishing his playing career with the Dodgers. Even more stoked to hear he will be in player development after he’s done. Miggy plays right and will instill that ethic with the youngsters.
