The Rays traded outfielder Tristan Peters to the White Sox for cash or a player to be named later, according to announcements from both clubs. Tampa Bay had designated Peters for assignment on Tuesday when they finalized their two-year deal with Steven Matz. Chicago had a couple openings on the 40-man roster and didn’t need to make another move.
Peters, 26, entered the professional ranks as a seventh-round pick by Milwaukee in 2021. The lefty-hitting outfielder was traded twice as a prospect — first to the Giants for reliever Trevor Rosenthal, then to Tampa Bay for infielder Brett Wisely. Peters got his first major league call this past August. He spent a week on the active roster and got into four games, going 0-12 with seven strikeouts. He otherwise spent his second straight full season with Triple-A Durham, batting .266/.355/.429 with 15 home runs across 555 plate appearances.
That was an improvement over Peters’ first season at the top minor league level. He’d hit .238/.344/.402 and connected on 12 homers in 2024. Peters has posted subpar exit velocities but shown solid strike zone awareness while making a decent amount of contact. He’s capable of playing anywhere in the outfield and has a couple minor league options remaining. The Sox can keep him in Triple-A without exposing him to waivers so long as they continue carrying him on the 40-man roster.
Barring a surprise trade of either player, the White Sox will open 2026 with Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. as their respective left and center fielder. The out-of-options Everson Pereira, himself an offseason trade pickup from Tampa Bay, probably enters Spring Training as the favorite in right field. Chicago has journeyman speedster Derek Hill penciled in for a bench role, while utilityman Brooks Baldwin could factor into either corner spot. It’s one of the weakest outfield groups in MLB and would be especially barren if the Sox finally line up a Robert trade by next summer’s deadline.

Adrian Houser 2.0
I missed the part of the article where it said the White Sox were converting Peters from outfielder to pitcher
To be fair, he may have meant that this is a similar low-risk move that could pay off.
Fun Fact: Tristan Peters has only celebrated 6 birthdays.
Feb 29th bdays mainly celebrate on the 28th of Feb on most occasions. The next Feb 29th will be on a Tuesday in 2028.
I had a friend growing up who had a Feb 29 birthday. We used to joke that on non-leap years his birthday was from noon on the 28th thru noon on March 1st. I still shoot him an email every leap year wishing him a happy [his actual age divided by 4] birthday 😁
Especially good news for an organization that is still prioritizing youth as they look to emerge from their latest rebuild!
A couple of nice things about the White Sox this off-season:
They cannot botch a high profile FA signing and/or miss out on a coveted FA.
We also do not have to worry about overpays, we know they will not do that (Robert aside).
Because neither of those things will happen it will be a nice un-stressful off-season for the fans. Even if there are injuries, again they are playing for next to nothing next season, and likely are hoping they can get even 1 game over .500.
Sure, fans miss out on getting some above average players to make the team better, but meh.. Starting to like the low expectations now with this organization.
“The Chairman” better hope that does not occur en masse.
Robert, Jr, going to be on fire in 2026. Sox will finish in Top 3 in division & Will Venable will win manager of the year.
The goal was to lose 99 games. Played very well after the break into September then stunk again. The goal is more like 71-91
Maybe his is just 2 six-year-old kids named Tristan and Peter in a trench coat
It’ll balance out, he’s going to age four years for every season he spends in Chicago
Maybe, one day he will accumulate 6 big league hits to go with his birthdays! Maybe.
Does a big pile of crappy players equal one good player?
@NateBob
So, he’s only 6 years old?
Good pick up Sox. Peters was awesome in Carbondale and is not a strikeout hawk in the minors. Upside here for a good price.
True and he does play all 3 OF positions but it seems likely his ceiling is a 4th OF.
I went to SIU at the same time that he played there and still live in Carbondale, so it’s pretty cool that he’s playing for my favorite team now.
I’m sorry that you still live in Carbondale lol
Anyone who was wondering what WSox want to headline a trade for cheap young catcher Edgar Quero…..yes, it’s a cheap young OF.
The Rays won’t be sniffing Edgar Quero as the potential PTBNL with this trade. Just saying…
No-lol- not in this transaction. Was saying they are scratching and clawing for OFs-this guy would be top of list to kick off 40 man if someone traded a legit OF for Quero.
Huh?
Peters was awesome in Carbondale Illinois. He was also not a strikeout Hawk in the minors. Good upside batter for a little cost. Nice job White Sox.
So the .000 average and 7 K in 12 AB can beat least partly attributed to him being so much younger than the people he is playing against in MLB?
No. It’s most likely attributable to being a small sample size. 25 isn’t that young in MLB terms.
Another Casas trade next?
I saw Peters play the last two years at AAA Durham. 5th outfielder who should still have an option year left. A little power, a good walk rate, and not a horrible strikeout rate.
Chris Getz is collecting lower-end Rays prospects pushed off the 40-man, Curtis Mead last summer and now Peters. Most Rays castoffs end up bouncing around as 26th/27th men (Vidal Brujan, Miles Mastrobuoni, Greg Jones) so don’t get your hopes up too high.
Chris Getz has gone on record stating that one of the White Sox goals this offseason was to add a young left-handed OF bat who can handle CF. Tristan Peters fits that objective, at least in regards to spring camp competition and as a depth option at AAA Charlotte.
True but he also traded for Everson P from the Rays as well that also all three positions in the OF too but he’s out of options.
Everson Pereira and Tristan Peters have similar OF profiles but the former hits from the right side. Pereira is a year younger and might have a better offensive skill set. The pair can potentially form a RF platoon option for the 2026 White Sox until top prospect Braden Montgomery is ready for prime time.
Montgomery is on a fast-track toward his MLB debut and becoming the White Sox core RF. After a strong first professional season at both A levels, AA and then the Arizona Fall League, Montgomery will get an invite to spring training where he can potentially earn the opening day gig with a strong camp. If not, he’ll likely debut at some point later this season.
Nope. Getz has said he will be at spring training, but will be moved to Charlotte for fine tuning no matter what he does in spring. That was on a article on White Sox, MLB website, but who know what Montgomery can do. Been hurt quite a spell & is still battling ailments. As a Sox fan I’d love to see him thump next spring. And I’d also love to see Colson Montgomery improve.. That low BA may cause problems when teams figure him out more.
Batting average means very little in today’s game. He posted 2 more WAR than Luis Arraez in significantly less games than him.
Im more worried about the k rate. A full season would have him over 160. Thats too much
Not true
Hence higher batting against = less K’s
Peters for Rosenthal was the worst MIL trade in their history.
Looks like a solid player. He is probably going to the perfect team in the Sox. Should get plenty of opportunities to play. Actually was hoping the Mets would grab him for the 4th outfielder position.
If the Sox want Robert as CF they might as well trade him. Every year Robert plays CF and he gets injured. Use Robert as DH maybe he won’t get injured.
He’s too good defensively to be used as a DH. He’s a plus defender at CF.
But he seems to get injured running to first base and pulling something or getting hit by pitch. I don’t remember him getting hurt playing defense.
White Sox also hiring former Rays executive Carlos Rodriguez for Assistant GM role.
This is nothing but a AAA roster filler. He may get another cup of coffee during the upcoming season at best, just to see if he has anything to contribute.
How does Peters make the Sox better?
He does not
Just hand the white Sox the world series trophy
We’ll take it
Why can’t they go for an MLB-quality player? I know O’Hearn is sketchy in the OF, but he could at least split time with 1B/OF until Braden is ready. And he shouldn’t even be that expensive.
I guess but maybe they add Nathaniel Lowe for 1B?
You’ll get Curtis Mead and like it!
go sox go [but where and how?]
