Tigers Sign Drew Anderson

By Darragh McDonald | December 8, 2025 at 5:07pm CDT

The Tigers announced the signing of righty Drew Anderson to a one-year, $7MM contract. There’s a $10MM club option for the 2027 season. Anderson, a client of Turner-Gary Sports, is expected to compete for a rotation spot. Detroit had an opening on the 40-man roster and didn’t need to make a corresponding move.

Anderson, 32 in March, bounced around the big leagues a few years ago. He got brief looks in five straight seasons from 2017 to 2021, spending time with the Phillies, White Sox and Rangers. He posted a 6.50 earned run average in 44 1/3 innings spread across those five seasons.

He went overseas for the 2022 season, joining the Hiroshima Carp of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He had a pretty good run as a Carp, posting a 3.05 over two seasons in Hiroshima. On the heels of that performance, he tried coming back to North America. The Tigers gave him a minor league deal in January of 2024. He didn’t make the team out of camp and was pitching for the SSG Landers of the Korea Baseball Organization by the end of April.

His first year in Korea went quite well. He tossed 115 2/3 innings over 24 appearances with a 3.89 ERA. His 10.7% walk rate was a bit high but he struck out 31.9% of batters faced and got grounders on 45.8% of balls in play. The Landers re-signed him for 2025 and his performance this year was even better. He made 30 starts and logged 171 2/3 innings with a 2.25 ERA, 35.3% strikeout rate, 7.3% walk rate and 45.9% ground ball rate.

In the past few days, a handful of teams have agreed to deals with players returning from stints overseas. The Astros agreed to a one-year, $2.6MM deal with Ryan Weiss, who had been pitching in Korea. Anthony Kay, who has been in Japan, got a two-year, $12MM deal from the White Sox. The Blue Jays made a big splash by agreeing to a three-year, $30MM deal with Cody Ponce.

Anderson’s numbers in 2025 were fairly close to Ponce’s in a few areas. Ponce’s 36.2% strikeout rate and 5.9% walk rate were both slightly ahead. His 45.7% ground ball rate was just barely behind Anderson’s. Ponce posted a 1.89 ERA, coming out slightly ahead of Anderson.

While the numbers might suggest a narrow gap between the two, the industry consensus is that Ponce is further ahead of Anderson based on his stuff. To illustrate, this piece from Eric Longenhagen and James Fegan of FanGraphs pegged Ponce as a #4 starter on a good team who should earn $20-25MM on a two-year deal, fairly close to what he eventually secured. Anderson, on the other hand, split the two writers. Without naming names, they say one of them felt Anderson could be a decent back-end guy while the other felt he would likely end up as a reliever.

It’s still unknown how much the Tigers are spending but they are making a bet that Anderson can hack it as a big league starter. Detroit’s rotation will be fronted by Tarik Skubal, with Reese Olson, Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty in behind him. Anderson will presumably be competing for the #5 spot in spring training alongside guys like Keider Montero, Troy Melton, Ty Madden and Sawyer Gipson-Long. The Tigers have been connected to free agents such as Zac Gallen, Ranger Suárez and Michael King, so it’s possible they change up the picture between now and when camp opens.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported that the Tigers and Anderson reached a one-year deal with a club option. The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen suggested Detroit views the righty as a starter.

Trade Skubal for the big haul!

Tigers can win the AL Central without Skubal and thats a great season.

Sign Martin Perez or Jose Quintana.

      Mize
      Olson
      Flaherty
      Quintana / Perez
      Anderson
      Melton
      Gibson-Long

Have some depth to fall back on.

In 287.1 innings pitched the last 2 seasons in Korea, he struck out 403 batters. No idea how that translates to MLB, but worth a try.

Better than Erick Fedde’s 2023, and in 2025 Cody Ponce and Drew Anderson hold the highest strikeout rates in KBO history for a single season at #1 and #2 respectively

KBO single season strikeout record holder with 252 in the regular season and an additional 23 in 3 postseason outings. Sub 2 ERA in a league where the league average is over 4. Average fastball velocity of 95.4 MPH with a nasty kick change

Just saw that former Tiger Victor Reyes has been in the KBO for a couple years. He hit .339 w/ a .883 OPS over there. He’s a monster. It tells you just how bad the pitching in that league is if Reyes can hit like that.

And if Reyes is a star, the native born KBO hitters must be pretty average.

Anderson can mow down mediocre KBO hitters. Hope he can translate even a little like that over here.

If his babip was more normalized towards the league average of .312 then he wouldn’t look quite as good. As is, he has cut down on his strikeout tendencies while taking more pitches too so if he was to return to MLB he might be better than he was before.

I’m so sick of Chris Illitch. He is the 3rd richest owner in MLB and spends like he has the bankroll of a JV Baseball Team! I miss Mike Illitch so much. I’m not expecting him to spend like his old man, who was a minor league Tiger himself. But can you atleast spend a little cash? He said once we were competitive, he’d open the wallet up. So we’ve made 2 straight ALDS, so????? Such a joke…

How rich the owner is, unfortunately, has little to do with the payroll of the team. (The Mets are the exception.,). The Tigers will spend like the mid market team they are. As to this signing, I am unimpressed. At least it won’t be $15 MM wasted like last year’s Cobb fiasco.

Rubbish. Professional baseball has always been a business run by businessmen and women.

You’ve been reading far too many fairy tales.

The only “civic pride” you can MAYBE extract from any business owner is that they have deep roots in an area and are too embarrassed to move the team elsewhere.

Other than that, all you can reasonably hope for is they hire good people, leave them alone to conduct baseball operations without interference, and allow them to spend roughly the same percentage of revenue on the team as every other team does.

Detroit does all of those things; expecting your owners to go beyond what every other owner does is utterly delusional. No wealthy person is going to spend money out of their pockets on ballplayers for your enjoyment, c’mon.

That sure sounds like you thought baseball owners were bound by civic duty in the “good old days,” especially back in the day when the players’ union didn’t exist and owners could be “proud civic leaders” while making money hand over fist while paying players peanuts…

Come on guys. The offseason has barely begun all teams need to round out their rosters with lower cost players at some point. This will not be Detroit’s major transaction of the offseason; it’s just their first. There are always teams that blow their wad early (Toronto this year..Padres most other years). Be patient, Detroit has something big up their sleeves.

171 2/3 innings with a 2.25 ERA, 35.3% strikeout rate, 7.3% walk rate and 45.9% ground ball rate. IN KOREA

MLB hitters, I’m going to guess, are 2x better hitters than KBO hitters. His walk rate in MLB has to go up because to have such a low one means he has to be throwing strikes. MLB hitters hit strikes way better than LBO hitters. That means his K rate will go down quite a bit too.

Heck, if he could maintain a 4.00 ERA with league average BB and K rates that would be amazing.

My guess is he will be closer to 5.00 with a BB rate over 10% and a K rate closer to 20%. He’ll either end up in the pen or Toledo. Keider Montero is waaaaay better.

Great pick up. He went overseas worked out the kinks, and is taking another shot so hes to be applauded. The Tigers get a pitcher at below normal market values for taking the chance. Its a win for both. That type of life experience is invaluable that he has had. Great one.
