Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer came within a few outs of winning his third career World Series ring before his Blue Jays fell to the Dodgers back in November, and with the end of the 2025 season came Scherzer’s third foray into free agency over the past five years. Now 41 and staring down his 42nd birthday this coming July, Scherzer is no longer the superstar ace he once was. Even so, the right-hander still believes he can help a team in the right circumstances. The right-hander told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently that, while he’s healthy and ready to sign if the right situation comes along, he would be willing to sit out the beginning of the season and sign after Opening Day if it meant finding his way onto a preferred team.
Rosenthal made clear that Scherzer did not reveal what teams he would prefer to play for, but it’s easy to imagine that Scherzer will prioritize playing for a team that he believes has a legitimate shot to win a World Series this year as he enters the twilight of his career. While waiting to sign is always risky, Scherzer could make himself a valuable asset to contending teams in need of depth at some point this year in the event that he does remain unsigned after Opening Day. Rosenthal compares Roger Clemens‘s final season in the majors, when he famously held off on signing until he was able to land a deal with the Yankees in early May. A more recent player who took a similar approach was righty reliever David Robertson, who was entering his age-40 season last year and held off on signing anywhere until the second half, when he landed with the Phillies and made 20 appearances down the stretch to solidify their bullpen.
Both of those comparisons demonstrate what teams should expect from Scherzer at this point. Clemens threw 99 innings for the Yankees in his age-44 campaign, pitching to a 4.18 ERA with a 4.14 FIP. That was the fifth-highest ERA of his storied, 24-year career. Likewise, Robertson turned in a decent but unspectacular 4.08 ERA and 4.95 FIP in his time with Philadelphia last season. In Scherzer’s case, the righty is coming off 17 starts for the Blue Jays where he at times looked like his typical dominant self and in other moments looked like one would expect a pitcher in his early 40s with nearly 3000 innings of mileage on his arm to look. That all added up to a 5.17 ERA and a 4.99 FIP, though he managed to turn things up a notch in the playoffs and muster a 3.77 ERA across three starts against the Mariners and Dodgers.
While Scherzer has indicated a willingness to hold out for the right fit, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be able to find a match before Spring Training begins next month. Looking exclusively at teams that made the playoffs last year, the Brewers just traded Freddy Peralta and surely wouldn’t mind a veteran innings eater to pair with Brandon Woodruff as a leader for their young staff. The Padres could certainly squeeze Scherzer into their rotation and push JP Sears into a depth role. The Phillies figure to start the season with both swing man Taijuan Walker and prospect Andrew Painter in the rotation. The Tigers are reportedly looking for a back-end starter and could represent a fun homecoming for Scherzer, who won his first Cy Young award with the club. Other teams like the Marlins and Athletics could also surely benefit from adding Scherzer, but those clubs might not be clear enough contenders on paper to intrigue the veteran hurler.

LoL..remember when the mets signed him and Verlander thinking this was it, here we come World series..then got smoked..LoL mets
Remember when the yanks gave judge a contract and wasted his prime years not winning anything
No. I do remember the Mets giving two pitchers that were collectively 90 years old $90 million a year though.
And they are both still pitching. It wasn’t that crazy of an idea
For the Mets?
They won a pennant in ‘24
Remember when the Mets gave Soto close To $800 million to win a World Series and ended up not even making the playoffs? LoL Mets
Being a fan of the more successful NY team and having such an intense beef with the other one for some reason is so cringe man.
I’m a yankess fan
Born and raised in New York. Don’t get why some hate the Mets. To me they’re just there. Awesome when we beat them but yeah
Your name is meow meow and using the word cringe, we know who you root for lol
You know what’s really “cringe”?..hailing yourselves the kings of New York before even playing a single game of the 2025 season.
I’m so curious what you think that means, Ron.
Let’s go Twins!
I have an issue with all of this fan war nonsense. Both sides make me cringe.
Come on now, Ron. I’m way too rude to be from the midwest.
I do remember that.
@lalo
I love Judge but keys temper this narrative. In 236 PA he has a career post-season slash on .236/.346./.476 and that’s fattened up by an incredible 2025 5 game set. His short-comimgs are tethered to the lacks lack of success in the post-season as well as other star players in the team. Cashman can’t pitch or hit clean up and the guys he hired do it in regular season games but come up short in the post-season. “Clutch-ability” doesn’t show before you sign a guy, it shows up once the games are played.
@lalo
Remember when the Mets gave 25 guys contracts for nearly 40 years and they wasted all their prime years winning nothing? Remember when the Mets gave Lindor 10/$341 and have 3 post-season win to show for it? Mind your mouth, and your manors, and worry about not wasting the prime years of your $50 mil man Soto. (tick, tick, tick… will be opt out and collect another $50 mil from Cohen to stay?).
RE: this whole thread
Remember when having really dumb takes like trying to insult people because of what baseball team they like was embarrassing and out of shame people wouldn’t do it?
@Juan
Remember when ppl didn’t take this so serious and would mind their business and understand I was replying to what the other guy said?
” Remember when people didn’t take this so serious”
My sentiments Exactly
KFCF
Things that aren’t serious can still be really dumb
You’re not wrong,Sadly it’s a daily reminder.
Verlander signed after Scherzer already choked late in 22. I was hoping to see more than a few months of Verlander for better or worse but Mets will Met always.
Pepperidge Farm remembers
As do Bartles & Jaymes.
“Thank you for your support”
Scherzer ‘22 – 11-5 with an 2.29 ERA and ‘23 he went 6-5 with a 4.01 ERA before being traded. Verlander in ‘23 went 6-5 with an 3.15 ERA. It’s not like they pitched bad. At least the Mets went for it. Plus they picked up prospects in the trades.
Smart move, he could benefit from what I call the “blowout market “meaning pitchers in spring training or early season who blow out their arm and are gone for the season with TJ surgery, which is inevitable
Sign with your hometown team for one last ride.
I like it. He could do homecoming in St. Louis for a couple of months with the understanding that he gets dealt to a destination of his choosing (amongst interested suitors, of course) at the deadline. The Cardinals wouldn’t have to be concerned with the return, the boost in ticket sales would be the benefit.
The young would definitely benefit from him being around.
No thanks.
A veteran clubhouse presence just isn’t going to be as critical as playing time for young guys. Maybe next year when things aren’t so completely wide open like they are now.
Would have loved having him when we needed him to win, but now we need alllll the innings for our gazillion pitching prospects.
The sooner we find out who can play, the sooner the Cards can get serious about winning again.
@OldUnc
No shade but it’s crazy that you suggest that a team with a $365 mil payroll main concern should be giving playing time to young inexperienced pitching prospects to find out who’s going to stick. I really hope that’s not how mnmgt is thinking.
@KFCF, this particular part of thread is talking about the Cardinals 😊 The discussion is for Max to come to play once for his home town STL.
The Cards pursued him in the past and he talked about wanting to play here.
@Uncle Charlie
I agree the number one priority is developing young players. But I think there will be innings to go around. Let’s say Max signed at the end of April, took 5 or six weeks to build up at Jupiter, then he’s ready in early June. By that point injuries, demotions, etc could create a need for veteran innings. It would be 10 starts at most before the deadline. It may be a little too cute to be beneficial, but it would provide a storyline in a long, noncompetitive season.
@Don, this rebuild is painful for me and a lot of fans; I wanna see the young guys get every at-bat and inning to move forward, ASAP.
If by some wild chance there’s a situation where it doesn’t make sense to rush someone up, then considering a vet bat or arm may be a consideration, but I’m highly skeptical of that since other young guys in Memphis will be coming along simultaneously with the big club development. We’re stacked with prospects at every level.
You mentioned ticket sales — I think Cards fans as a whole are finally starting to embrace the idea of a full and total rebuild; with that, I want to see all the young guys play as much as possible and not spend a dime on free agents. Put it all into development, and undo the damage to the org that was stripped of prepping young talent that has killed the team.
I’ll watch every game. Maximizing playing time is all I care about.
@Uncle
oops.. my bad
A veteran clubhouse guy teaches all the younger players how to win in hundreds of situations .. Scherzer played that role with the jays – he was invaluable… Krot them calm enough to enjoy the ride and not to focus on ribs, but instead just be YOUR very best!
@Florida — If it’s a year from now, a veteran teaching the kids to win makes sense. We’re not even in the same stratosphere (yet) as a team with established young talent like that Jays team you’re referring to.
I understand learning to win and how to prep and how to handle pressure and handle losing…the Cards are taking baby steps and the sooner we can teach the kids to walk, the sooner we can teach them to run…and win.
A’s will sign him for 2 years
41 year-old has been thinks he’s setting the rules.
Reggie Sanders might be up there. I think Lonnie Smith too.
Sanders made it to the dance with 3 teams (Arizona, San Francisco, and St. Louis)
Lonnie Smith made it to the World Series 5 times with 4 teams (Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City and Atlanta twice)
They’re filled with helium. So they’re very light.
Based on last year, and what he will likely be asking for salary-wise this seems like a very poor investment.
It would be fun if he signed with St. Louis. He could be a mentor to Liberatore, McGreevy, Pallante among others.
Go to Anaheim! That’s where most MLB retirees go.
Don Baylor has at least 3. Consecutive as well.
Wills Smith have won six straight World Series with four different teams.
Who
Oh ole slappy slapidty doo
I think the Dodgers should just sign him and keep him around just in case they ever need him
If nothing else he can pitch a couple of innings in playoffs for them
Wait he’s still playing??? I thought he was on this years HOF ballot….😉
from what I saw with him last year I think being a half season pitcher is the right move for Max
Still want him to sign with Cleveland because Darragh predicted it and it would look weird to see him in a Guardians jersey
I would be sad if Sherzer retires, but maybe he rolls this plan out for a few years.
@Astros
Bassitt will be signed before ST.
Would love to see Scherzer and Bassitt return to the Blue Jays, even mid-season!
True, Yamamoto is basically a second rotation on his own.
He’s holding out for the Blue Jays or Dodgers. Maybe the Phillies. Only teams with a chance to win this year unless major injuries occur.
Max going to do a Clemens. Maybe not a bad idea; sign in May, be ready by late June/early July and help a team down the stretch
Though I’m a White Sox fan, I’d love for the Tigers to sign Verlander and Scherzer. Bring them back home for a last season and gives the Tigers a better shot in their last year with Skubal.
If I signed him, I wouldn’t want him to report to camp until May anyway. Let him build up for a month and start pitching in June. Be fresh come playoffs
Scherzer needs 45 Ks to pass Perry and 85 Ks to pass Sutton. He needs three wins to pass Kershaw.
I think he’s got the arm and the right mind set to be a solid closer. Don’t think he has the gas to make 5 innings efficiently, but an inning or two he could really be effective and meaningful. I’d take a flier on him in that role for the right price if he were willing, otherwise retirement is probably the most realistic option at this point.
Or wait to sign later. No way Max is retiring a reliever unless he’s doing so in the postseason.
Cards, sign a one year. It’s your marketing budget.
I loved Mad Max as a Blue Jay, only wish he’d been healthy the whole season. I would like to see Bassitt resign with the Jays, I think he’d be a great presence in the bullpen.
The HALL is about life – LIVE IT WITH INTEGRITY- no cutting corners , no cheating, do everything for the right reasons !!!
Hall members play the game to the highest standards , not by cheating… You come from the clone show that says if you’re not cheating, you’re not winning , or vice versa… You must be a democrat!!
Baltimore should jump on this.
Think the Mariners end up with him??
cant much blame Scherzer for wanting to keep playing
or being willing to wait until some team offers a wildly large salary.
he’s mastered a very specific craft and not only does it pay rather well,
it’a also nice work if you can get it.
