The Orioles have acquired infielder Bryan Ramos from the White Sox, according to reporter Francys Romero. Baltimore has officially announced the trade, and the Sox will get cash considerations in return. To open up a 40-man spot for Ramos, the Orioles designated Weston Wilson for assignment.
Ramos was designated for assignment three days ago when the Sox themselves needed to create 40-man space for the newly-signed Seranthony Dominguez. Ramos’ stint in DFA limbo didn’t last long, and he’ll now change organizations for the first time in his career, as the infielder was an international signing for the White Sox back in 2018. He started to make waves as a prospect during the 2022-23 seasons, and he made his MLB debut in 2024, posting a .586 OPS over 108 plate appearances for Chicago.
This uninspiring performance seemed to drop Ramos down the depth chart, even on a rebuilding White Sox team. He appeared in just four big league games in 2025, bringing his overall slash line to .198/.244/.333 in 120 PA against Major League pitching. While Ramos’ numbers (.235/.321/.404 in 705 PA) at Triple-A Charlotte are more respectable, they’re underwhelming considering that Charlotte plays in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the minors.
Ramos has played only third base in the majors, and the hot corner has also been his primary position during his minor league career. However, Ramos has increased his versatility by playing some second base and a handful of games as a first baseman and left fielder, as becoming more of a utilityman will help Ramos in his attempts to return to the majors.
Wilson is a more established utilityman who has seen some time at first base, second base, third base, and all three outfield positions over his 100 career Major League games, all with the Phillies from 2023-25. Wilson has also shown more at the plate, with a .242/.328/.428 and nine homers over 245 PA. Most of that production came in Wilson’s first two seasons, and since he had only a .652 OPS over 125 PA in 2025, the Phils decided to move on by DFA’ing Wilson in late January.
The Orioles made a claim a few days later, but have now sent Wilson back to the waiver wire in relatively short order. This is something of the way of life for players like Wilson or Ramos who are out of minor league options, and Baltimore is particularly aggressive in constantly churning the back end of its 40-man roster, with the idea that the O’s can add minor league depth by sneaking enough players through the outright process. Assuming Wilson isn’t claimed again, the Orioles can outright him to Triple-A since Wilson doesn’t have enough service time to reject an outright assignment.

oh well
Transaction buddies today, Norfolk teammates on the Tides tbd.
Yattah way White Sox, while we keep Korey Lee and Derek Hill on our 40 man.
Korey Lee currently has more value than Bryan Ramos.
Lee’s MLB floor is that of decent backup catcher with a strong arm and some pop as a hitter. He’s still young enough to become a starter but it likely won’t be with the White Sox now that they have two younger options with higher ceilings.
Yeah, I’m surprised how little has been reported about potential interest in Korey Lee. Your comments about his age, arm strength, power, and floor and ceiling are spot on.
Not the orioles news we’re hoping for.
I’m not sure when that news is going to come. I’m not sure if it’s a contract holdup or just really bad weather.
I’d rather have Wilson than Ramos but get that there’s a decent chance Baltimore gets to keep both should Wilson clear waivers and Ramos either make the team out of ST or be successfully run through waivers himself.
If Ramos gets more than 1 abs this season then things went seriously sideways with the season.
I orginally said 50. My thoughts are he is such a deep stash that if he even gets called up the season is in jeopardy.
Ramos is a decent fellow but at Best a AAAA journeyman type. Good luck to him and hope he adds some value to the Os as a depth piece. Don’t see how he fits in with Gunnar and the other similar types Baltimore to have an affinity for though.
Gunnar is a SS; Ramos is not – so there is no worry about him “fitting in ” with Gunnar. Also, this is only Ramos’ second organization so the term “journeyman” is misused.
I’m sure Google would know, but how much cash is typically involved in a transaction like this? Is the cash more valuable than the PTBNL?
Probably very little, but a little money is better than nothing, which is what the Sox were looking at getting.
$25k is the waiver fee.
But this was a trade, not a waiver claim. And it’s $20k
Preston Wilson’s bro.
Depth is all fine and dandy, but just get me that top of rotation starter. I dont care who it is as long as theyre quality enough to reliably slot in the range of Bradish and Rogers.
The Orioles have never seen a AAAA level UIF they don’t like. Well at least for a few days until they waive that one for another.
^^boring^^
^^Obnoxious^^
Someone has to play in Norfolk– might as well create a DFA carousel of former prospects and fringe major leaguers. One of them might get hot. It’s really weird when people get bent out of shape when teams manage their farm team as though it can only be built after every major league free agent is signed.
They had so many UIF/backup infielders last year at AAA that a couple of them never made it for long looks. Vavra was hitting in AAA all year and got 1 AB? Machin got like 12 PA. Then they had Rivera, Mateo (for some reason), Vazquez, etc.
As the article says, the Orioles do this to sneak guys through waivers and stash in the minors, not necessarily because they have a want or even a need for yet another UIF who has no shot at playing. Other teams don’t do this.
We have exactly 0 upper minors infield prospects.
We had a bunch and they graduated or got dealt before 2025. Machin got 500 PA’s in Norfolk. Jeremiah Jackson was a scrap heap pick up. Most won’t work but we have nothing and these guys block 0 prospects.
Baltimore_44 not sure you caught my intent. I am saying they keep a bunch of fringe infield guys not blocked prospects. These fringe guys won’t play with Westburg, Henderson, Holliday, and Alonso starting. But why have 7 or 8 of them?
Agree that they’ve emptied the upper minors of starter to star caliber infield prospects, but they also don’t need them at the moment (they need a top of the rotation starter).
Never hurts to have an optionable decent prospect in the upper levels. But we don’t. I think right now we’re just trying to keep a couple that we like a bit.
We’ve claimed and then lost most of the infielders. I don’t love Elias’ frequent claiming and waivering but I don’t think the net effect hurts us at all. Not sure it helps either.
I’m more concerned if Gunnar goes down at any point. That means Holiday will have to play SS when he’s a work in progress at 2B.
But yeah I do generally agree with Ramos. Unless they think he’s a better 3B option than Mayo in the event of a Holliday or Westy injury. (In which case Coby Mayo should be traded right now)
I think any middle infielder we claim does have a legitimate shot at playing for us next year though. We’re an injury away from not having anything on the bench that you feel good about in the middle infield.
I was the most vocal proponent of the Orioles picking Jax #1. But he is just not an infielder. He’s horrible at 2B and would be abysmal at SS. Move him to CF and see if he can adjust. Can’t be much worse than Cow out there. With his weak arm, he’d probably be willing to hit cutoff men, which Cow refuses to do.
Wilson would not be a back pickup has shown some power potential that would not be bad for a bench player
The Orioles will make sign one of the top FA pitchers left. I want it to be Framber Valdez, but I’ll be happy with Gallen or Giolito.
