Matt Harvey Suffers Setback

Angels righty Matt Harvey has suffered a setback that will delay his return to the majors, skipper Brad Ausmus told reporters including Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link). Harvey has been on the injured list for just over two weeks.

It had been hoped that Harvey would get a breather, let the back issue heal up, and return to the majors after a limited rehab assignment. But his first (and thus far only) rehab stint did not go as planned.

Harvey took the mound for Triple-A Salt Lake City on Saturday, lasting only 2 2/3 innings before he was pulled. Before departing, he was tagged for eight earned runs on eight hits and two walks.

That’s obviously not the kind of showing he and the team were hoping for. Today’s news adds injury to insult.

When Harvey hit the IL, he was toting a 7.50 ERA in ten starts. Indeed, it seemed possible that the brutal results were as much a cause for the placement as the injury. (Harvey said he hadn’t experienced any symptoms since the IL placement.)

It isn’t clear just yet what the next steps are for Harvey. Ausmus acknowledged some concern in the veteran hurler. The Halos are now without both Harvey and fellow free agent signee Trevor Cahill, who’s dealing with a similarly nebulous blend of injury (elbow soreness) and performance issues.

Pirates Sign First-Rounder Quinn Priester

The Pirates have announced the signing of first-round pick Quinn Priester. He’ll earn $3.4MM, per MLB.com’s Jim Callis (via Twitter).

Priester, an Illinois high-schooler, went with the 18th overall selection. The slot value is $3.48MM. He’ll forego a commitment to TCU to launch his professional career.

Entering the draft, most rankings had Priester slotted in just the range he was chosen. Fangraphs (17) and MLB.com (19) had him just ahead of ESPN.com’s Keith Law (20) and Baseball America (23).

While the BA crew ranked a few additional players above Priester, they still lauded his “excellent physical projection and advanced strike-throwing capabilities.” MLB.com cited his “athleticism and the ease of his arm action.” It seems all the physical tools are there for Priester and the Bucs’ player development system.

Yankees Sign First Rounder Anthony Volpe

The Yankees have announced the signing of first-round draft pick Anthony Volpe was signing on the dotted line. He’ll receive $2,740,300, per MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo (via Twitter).

Volpe, a high-school shortstop from New Jersey, was taken with the 30th overall selection. That choice comes with a $2.37MM pool allocation, so the Yanks will have to find some savings from other signings.

Most pundits didn’t have Volpe rated quite this high. But the Fangraphs duo of Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel graded him the 38th-best prospect available.

Volpe is known most for his glovework, as he’s considered a polished and talented shortstop. Questions remain about his bat. Entering the draft, many wondered whether Volpe would end up at Vanderbilt, but he chose instead to launch a career with his hometown team.

Rockies Place Seunghwan Oh On IL, Select Philip Diehl

The Rockies have placed righty Seunghwan Oh on the 10-day injured list with a left abdominal strain. MLB.com’s Thomas Harding (via Twitter) reported the move, which is retroactive to June 7th.

Taking the active roster spot is lefty Phillip Diehl. His contract was selected to the 40-man roster.

Oh has not pitched since May 30th, making for quite a lengthy stretch of inactivity for a player on the active roster. He has struggled quite a bit to open the season, working to a 9.33 ERA in 18 1/3 innings with 7.9 K/9 and 2.9 K/9. Opposing hitters haven’t struggled to make good contact, with 29 total hits and six long balls.

Diehl, 24, came to the Rox in a pre-season swap with the Yankees. He has compiled 29 strikeouts against eight walks in 27 1/3 upper-minors frames this year. Diehl owns a 2.30 cumulative ERA, though that mark has risen a fair bit since he was promoted to Triple-A following 13 1/3 scoreless frames at Double-A.

Pirates Place Jordan Lyles On 10-Day IL

The Pirates have placed righty Jordan Lyles on the 10-day injured list, per a club announcement. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by reliever Montana DuRapau.

Lyles is said to be dealing with left hamstring tightness. The muscle has given him issues of late, disrupting what had been an excellent start to the season.

After joining the Pirates on an affordable, one-year deal, Lyles turned in eight starts of 1.97 ERA pitching. But he stumbled in his next outing and soon thereafter reported hammy troubles. Lyles has permitted 16 earned runs in his past 18 2/3 frames.

Despite the recent downturn, there’s still plenty to like about the 28-year-old’s work to this point. He’s averaging more than a strikeout per nine for the first time in his career while sustaining the swinging-strike increase he has shown in recent years. Lyles isn’t throwing as hard as he did last year but has found more and more success by shelving his once heavily used sinker in favor of his four-seamer and curve.

It seems reasonable to hope that Lyles won’t require too long an absence, though he’d do well to ensure the problem is behind him. Trouble is, the Pirates are already dealing with some tough injury and performance issues in the rotation. Just what the team will do to fill in isn’t immediately clear. The Bucs are already on the look for innings from outside the organization.

Giants Acquire Alex Dickerson

The Giants and Padres have announced a swap that will send outfielder Alex Dickerson to San Francisco. Righty Franklin Van Gurp goes to San Diego in return.

Dickerson, 29, was designated for assignment recently by the Friars. He’ll find a match with a Giants organization that has been on the hunt for interesting opportunities in the outfield all season long.

Though the Friars long tried to give Dickerson an extended look, his body didn’t hold up long enough for extended action. He turned in a solid offensive showing in his first full MLB action back in 2016, only to miss all of 2017 and 2018 owing to back issues and Tommy John surgery.

Dickerson returned this year to a tough roster situation in San Diego. The club has several younger players who deserve looks of their own at the game’s highest level.

Though Dickerson didn’t run with what limited opportunity he did have in the majors — just three singles to go with seven strikeouts in 19 MLB plate appearances this year — he has once again showed an interesting bat at Triple-A. In 113 plate appearances, Dickerson is batting .372/.469/.606 with an 18:14 K/BB ratio and five home runs.

As for Van Gurp, he’s a 2017 25th-rounder who just received a promotion to the Double-A level. The 23-year-old has battled walk issues at times but has performed well in that area this year. Through 33 2/3 innings — five at Double-A and the bulk at Class A — Van Gurp owns a 4.54 ERA with 13.1 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9.

Pirates To Activate Corey Dickerson, Jung Ho Kang

The Pirates will activate outfielder Corey Dickerson and infielder Jung Ho Kang for tomorrow’s game, skipper Clint Hurdle told reporters including MLB.com’s Adam Berry (via Twitter). Corresponding roster moves aren’t yet known.

Dickerson’s shoulder injury ended up costing him about two months of action. He’ll need a 40-man roster spot, since he had been moved to the 60-day IL. Kang was out for three weeks with a left side strain.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Bucs handle their roster now that they’re approaching full health. There’ll really be an abundance of corner outfielders once Lonnie Chisenhall is ready, but even Dickerson creates a bit of a crowd.

Jose Osuna could be the odd man out, though he has hit well in brief action. That would leave the club with two switch-hitting options (Melky Cabrera, Bryan Reynolds) and a pair of lefty bats (Dickerson, Gregory Polanco) in the corner mix. That’s arguably a somewhat suboptimal mix, particularly since it means carrying five players limited to outfield or pinch-hitting duties.

Hurdle will also face some tough playing time decisions. The resurgent Cabrera and newcomer Reynolds are both hitting quite well. Dickerson and Polanco are both well-established and well-compensated players. There has already been some chatter among Pirates scribes that the club could ponder trading from its outfield stock to boost a sagging pitching staff, though it remains unclear whether and when that strategy will be pursued.

It’s a bit easier to guess at the decision in the infield. Youngster Cole Tucker has not yet found sustained success at the plate and seems likely to be dispatched back to Triple-A, though that’ll leave the club with only two true middle infielders (Kevin Newman and Adam Frazier). Perhaps the Pirates will send down a pitcher and run with a seven-man bullpen for at least a stretch, but that seems unlikely to be a long-term strategy for a team that needs innings.

Whatever the move, Kang is hardly assured of a lengthy stint back on the MLB roster. He’ll need to improve upon a terrible start to the season or be sent packing.

It’ll be interesting to see how it all shakes out, both now and in the near future. We know that GM Neal Huntington is looking for ways to shore up the pitching staff. The Bucs could be a fun team to watch with seven weeks to go before the trade deadline and a four-game deficit in the division.

Phillies To Sign Fernando Salas

The Phillies have agreed to a minors pact with righty reliever Fernando Salas, MLBTR’s Steve Adams reports on Twitter. Salas is expected to report to the club’s top affiliate.

Salas has thrown nearly five hundred MLB frames over nine seasons, but has bounced around a bit in recent years. He threw forty innings for the Diamondbacks last year before he was cut loose, then was dropped by the Braves after a brief stint at Triple-A. He ended up landing in the Mexican League for the current season.

Pitching for the Acereros de Monclova this year, Salas has precisely matched his lifetime 3.90 MLB ERA through 27 2/3 innings in his homeland. He has coughed up four long balls, which helps explain the results, but is carrying a strong 28:4 K/BB ratio.

Whether or not Salas will end up getting a shot at the MLB level with the Phils remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him come up in the near future. The Philadelphia organization is weathering an ongoing run of poor health fortune in its relief corps.

Blue Jays Agree To Terms With First-Rounder Alek Manoah

The Blue Jays have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice Alek Manoah, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). It’s an at-slot, $4,547,500 deal for the 11th overall pick.

Manoah, a junior out of West Virginia University, was selected right in range of where he was ranked by draft pundits. ESPN.com’s Keith Law was highest, grading him ninth overall, while MLB.com had him right at the draft position. Baseball America and Fangraphs each ranked Manoah the 13th-best prospect available.

A massive right-handed hurler, Manoah is said by the MLB.com team to be “a rare college pitcher with projection.” He increased his stock this year by improving his strike-throwing ability, though BA notes his command is still a work in progress. In addition to that needed refinement, Manoah will need to gain confidence in an infrequently-utilized changeup to go with his fastball/slider combo.

Angels Reinstate Kevan Smith, Designate Dustin Garneau

The Angels have announced that backstop Kevan Smith is back from the concussion injured list. To create space on the active roster, the team designated catcher Dustin Garneau for assignment.

That move also freed up a 40-man spot to make way for the team to bring up infielder Wilfredo Tovar. The final active roster space was created by optioning righty Jaime Barria.

Garneau, 31, will either end up landing elsewhere or back at Sale Lake City. He got on base at a healthy clip over his seven-game showing and was slashing .247/.368/.589 in 87 Triple-A plate appearances before his promotion. He has at times posted strong offensive numbers in the upper minors, but carries only a .198/.282/.321 slash in 302 trips to the dish over five seasons of action at the game’s highest level.
