Giants Acquire Alex Dickerson

By Jeff Todd | June 10, 2019 at 2:18pm CDT

The Giants and Padres have announced a swap that will send outfielder Alex Dickerson to San Francisco. Righty Franklin Van Gurp goes to San Diego in return.

Dickerson, 29, was designated for assignment recently by the Friars. He’ll find a match with a Giants organization that has been on the hunt for interesting opportunities in the outfield all season long.

Though the Friars long tried to give Dickerson an extended look, his body didn’t hold up long enough for extended action. He turned in a solid offensive showing in his first full MLB action back in 2016, only to miss all of 2017 and 2018 owing to back issues and Tommy John surgery.

Dickerson returned this year to a tough roster situation in San Diego. The club has several younger players who deserve looks of their own at the game’s highest level.

Though Dickerson didn’t run with what limited opportunity he did have in the majors — just three singles to go with seven strikeouts in 19 MLB plate appearances this year — he has once again showed an interesting bat at Triple-A. In 113 plate appearances, Dickerson is batting .372/.469/.606 with an 18:14 K/BB ratio and five home runs.

As for Van Gurp, he’s a 2017 25th-rounder who just received a promotion to the Double-A level. The 23-year-old has battled walk issues at times but has performed well in that area this year. Through 33 2/3 innings — five at Double-A and the bulk at Class A — Van Gurp owns a 4.54 ERA with 13.1 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9.

He’s basically free, somewhat interesting, and everybody they have now stinks. This is exactly the kind of player they should be acquiring, since they have the PT available. Nothing to lose.

The Giants may have struck gold with Dickerson. He missed 2 years due to injury. What really bites for him is that he was just starting to figure it out. If he returns to form, the Giants will have a nice LH bat who can hit for average and power. And, he’ll probably feast on the Padres every time we face him.

      I wish him the best.

Franklin Van Gurp. Now that is a baseball name. Also of note is that he’s from Saint Maarten, and I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been an MLB player from that country before, so I’ll root for him to make it.

Gerber is one of Zaidi’s endless number of minor league Journeymen. Slater on the other hand, I don’t know why he hasn’t been called up. He’s Connor Joe, but he can actually play multiple positions and has always hit in the minors (something Joe hasn’t). And unlike any OF the Giants have had all year, he’s able to keep his OBP over .300.

Slater is a defensive liability. Shaw strikes out too much, but has apparently improved in that area. Look for Shaw in September or maybe earlier.

Yeah! Another Zaidi outfielder taken from the DFA scrap heap. How many days does Dickerson last with the Giants? Certainly Shaw and Slater deserve a look instead of constantly being passed over. Ready or not Heliot Ramos could do just as well as Zaidi’s DFAs.

This is worth a shot for sure, but so far Farhan’s evaluations and moves have been singularly unimpressive. Been waiting to see someone rescued from the trash heap, like Josh Turner or Muncy show up for the Gents. Not so far…. maybe this guy could be at least league average or above.

It takes more than just picking them up to find the next Turner/Muncy breakout – they actually have to develop them. Zaidi can’t do that too – that’s the responsibility of a Giants program that has been a complete failure for years.

Farhan wasn’t involved with Justin Turner, Giants fan. Also, the players will probably tell you, the FO didn’t help them improve their swing. It took Muncy over a year to go from trash heap to MLB player.

Dickerson is reporting to Sacramento according to local reporting

The only issue I take with the OF carousel is Zaidi early said they specifically sought our RH OF (with power) yet the 2 they had in house Williamson and Altherr were not provided any sort of opportunity (55 PA for Mac is beyond small sample size).

At the same time the team seems to have little issue giving Pillar every day AB’s to the tune of a .226 .257 .364 slash line, an OPS+ of 66 in a not insignificant 230 PA as now corner OF as they rightfully returned Duggar to CF. He is clearly a non-tender candidate.

I agree man. Pillar has to go. How long can they continue to put him out there?? His bat is terrible, and his glove is fading too. I seen him dive for a few balls this year and miss them, costing the Giants runs they cant afford to give up. At least Duggar has premium D, and i think his bat will come around eventually. They need to give Slater and Shaw more of a opportunity to shine.

Ramos will be a corner outfielder for them within 2 seasons, maybe about the time Bishop is ready. Duggar may still be there in CF, maybe not. Until then, Zaidi will be doing mix-and-match like this while seeing what gems come back from the trades he’s about to make with the bullpen and Bumgarner.

I also suspect their days of experimenting with Shaw in the OF are over, and they may reprogram him back to 1B at AAA. That’ll tell you their plans about Belt in the offseason.

Hitters act and talk tough because they are protected. For that, I understand Bumgarner’s frustration

As Bumgarner’s skills have declined, he is giving up the”Adios pelota” with increasing frequency. Over the past three years, it has become apparent that he needs another out pitch. Batters are sitting on his slider or fastball and knocking the snot rocket out of it. (Pun intended) Unfortunately, he has listened to his pundits who tell him how great he is and that he should rest during the off-season. Thus he shows up in camp not ready to pitch. He is always terrible during spring training, wobbles through April. Starts to get into pitching shape in May and from June on looks like a very good number two pitcher in the rotation should. He is not an Ace or stopper per se’ except during the postseason. Bumgarner needs the adrenalin that comes with money games.
In response to your post mota breath. What would you have him do? Smile and thank Muncy for crushing his pitch? The guy is a competitor and that fire is what fuels him.. I’m sure he took umbrage at Muncy admiring his work. In the past, a pitcher would shut up and remember. The next time Muncy came to the plate Bumgarner could just hit him in the rump or give him some chin music. Don Drysdale would have hit you. Juan Marichal would have hit you. Sandy Koufax would not. He realized his fastball might kill you and declined to throw at batters. In today’s touchy-feely society I expected a comment like yours. Obviously, you lack the nuances of the game. This entire generation of ballplayers is cognizant that every time they adjust their cup it is caught on TV.. What follows is a number of irate mothers/fathers calling asking why a player has to grope himself. The truth is, no matter how well the cup fits it is uncomfortable. Watch the on-deck circle when you go to a game. Batters do most of their adjusting there because the camera is seldom there. But I digress.
Back to Bumgarner. He is no fool. He knew he was up against one of the premier young pitchers in baseball. He knew that one run could cost him, and with the stench of this teams offense, it did. Yelling at Muncy has everything to do with Muncy’s actions and probably, even more, to do with the Giants inactions at the plate. This is a terrible team and will only get worse before it gets better. I hope for Bumgarner’s sake he does get traded to a contender. He needs the adrenal of playing for the money, compared to the frustration of playing for last place in the NL West..

The irony is, MadBum’s home run trot against the Dodgers earlier in the year, was only a second or so quicker than Muncy’s – and Muncy’s took longer because of the jawing.

MadBum is arrogant, hypocritical, and frustrated that he’s declining.

Another low risk move. Whether it works out or not is up to Dickerson. Would have preferred a bit younger. If he can stay healthy, this could be a good move. Guys have to take advantage of the opportunity afforded to them no matter if they get 100 AB’s or only 10. It’s easy to trash Zaidi for the mess he inherited. Every move he has made was with the intent to improve the team and organization, he’s not the one taking the at-bats or throwing the pitches. The Giants will improve and contend again. The same cannot be said for the 10-12 teams or more that are perpetually in a rebuild and have no desire to win. Be patient and give the guy a couple years

    Reply
    • sfjackcoke

IF you wish to bash Zaidi you could say he under estimated the OF market while ownership flirted with Harper. That over estimation led to them simply not having MLB ready OF on the roster to start the season. It also let to the trade for Kevin Pillar and his ~ $5M salary AND to date 393 AB taken by the below players

      Kevin Pillar 217
      Gerardo Parra 86
      Mike Yastrzemski 52
      Mike Gerber 15
      Connor Joe 15
      Michael Reed 8

Mac had something none of the above had and that’s plus power, the type of power that works at Oracle/ATT. The 50+ abs a fair number taken hitting 8th in front of the pitcher is short sighted. I’m not a Mac apologist, I am questioning the process.

ABs are valuable in that regard that’s all on Zaidi and to the point he is writing the lineup card Bochy. Also what is up with Tyler Austin, if he is ONLY capable of playing 1B, then he doesn’t fit on an NL roster. If he can play the OF why isn’t he playing more and taking some ABs against RHP to show he’s more than just a lefty masher. Once again someone to take ABs that are currently going to a non-tender player in Pillar.

I’m happy they showed patience in getting Pomeranz sorted out and wow did he just become a lottery ticket trade target with that showing against LAD. I think they are pissed at Holland, he’s in the doghouse but they need a path for him to get out. Velocity is there, location however is not, not AT ALL.

I agree regarding Austin. Give him at-bats against righties as well. Give him a few weeks of regular playing time in left and 1b and see what you’ve got. I’m guessing they try and move pillar, won’t get much of a return. Maybe a young, lottery ticket type
