Yankees’ Coaches Marcus Thames, Phil Nevin Won’t Return In 2022

12:11 pm: While there’s been much speculation concerning Aaron Boone’s status as the Yankees’ manager, the team is already making changes to the coaching staff.  Hitting Coach Marcus Thames has been informed he won’t be brought back next year, reports Lindsey Adler of The Athletic.

A former MLB outfielder and designated hitter, Thames served as the Bombers’ hitting coach the past four seasons. Starting in 2002 he played parts of ten seasons for four big league clubs, including two stays with the Yankees. In 2012 he joined the Yanks as a minor league hitting coach, and worked in that capacity at three levels. He arrived in the Bronx in 2016 as the assistant hitting coach, and was promoted to hitting coach two years later.

Like Thames, Nevin and Pilittere each depart the organization after spending four seasons in their respective roles. All three joined the coaching staff at the same time as Boone, whose status for 2022 remains unresolved. Boone has expressed a desire to return, but his contract expires at the end of this season. The Yankees have yet to make a formal announcement regarding Boone’s future with the organization.

Hyeon-jong Yang Likely Headed Back To KBO

Former Rangers hurler Hyeon-jong Yang apparently won’t be giving MLB a second go. Yoo Jee-ho of the Yonhap News Agency reports that Yang is likely to return to the Korea Baseball Organization. Before signing with Texas earlier this year, Yang spent 14 seasons with the KBO’s Kia Tigers. Representatives for the team recently told reporters that Yang expressed interest in rejoining the club and that they would attempt to re-sign him.

Now 33 years old, Yang enjoyed a great deal of success with Kia, including winning the regular season and Korean Series MVP trophies in 2017. He appeared in 425 games with the Tigers, posting a 147-95 record and 3.83 ERA.

Unfortunately, those numbers didn’t translate well to the big leagues. Yang signed a minor league deal with Texas on February 12 of this year. He didn’t break camp with the Rangers, but was called up on April 26. He appeared in eight games over the next seven weeks, including four starts, but was mostly ineffective. Over 29 innings he put up a 5.59 ERA and 6.55 FIP. He was then designated for assignment, cleared waivers and assigned to the Round Rock Express, Texas’ Triple-A affiliate. He spent the rest of the season bouncing between Round Rock and Arlington, with similar results.

After being outrighted to Round Rock in mid-September, Yang elected to become a free agent on October 4, setting up a possible return to the KBO.

Tigers Notes: Goodrum, Greene, TV Deal

Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that Niko Goodrum looks like a strong candidate to be non-tendered this off-season.  That’s notable in that Goodrum has spent the past four seasons in Detroit, taking on a prominent role around the diamond.  He delivered a decent 95 wRC+ and 1.9 fWAR in 2019, his second full year in the majors, but has struggled since then.  This past season he appeared in just 90 games, largely due to three stints on the 10-day IL.  And when he was on the field, he only managed a paltry .214/.292/.359 line, good for just a 79 wRC+. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects Goodrum to land an arbitration salary around $2.9MM if tendered a contract. He’d remain under team control for the 2023 campaign in that scenario as well.

In other news out of Motown:

  • The Tigers’ top outfield prospect, Riley Greene, won’t be playing in the Arizona Fall League as he had been slated to do.  Lynn Henning of the Detroit News revealed earlier this week that Greene suffered a concussion when he dove for a ball in the second-to-last game of the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens’ season.  It’s an unfortunate end to what was a terrific season for Greene, who hit for a .921 OPS in 124 games across the Double- and Triple-A levels.
  • The Tigers and Bally Sports Detroit have reached agreement on a new multi-year contract for the latter to continue broadcasting Detroit’s games, reports Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Bally is part of the Sinclair Broadcast Group. Financial terms of the deal remain unknown, and it’s not clear if the new agreement will have any direct impact on Detroit’s payroll.  Regardless of the terms of the TV contract, the Tigers look likely to increase player payroll in the coming years as they emerge from their recent rebuild.

Padres’ Chairman: A.J. Preller’s Job Is Safe

Padres president of baseball operations and GM A.J. Preller received a strong vote of confidence from ownership, reports Dennis Lin of The Athletic (subscription required).  San Diego Chairman Peter Seidler told Lin that Preller’s job is “as safe as a GM’s job can be.”  Seidler added: “I one-hundred percent believe in [Preller], one-hundred percent trust him.  And that’s not because I’m blindly loyal.”

That Preller is likely to continue leading the team for the long term hardly qualifies as a surprise.  It was just eight months ago that the club extended Preller’s contract through the 2026 season and added the PBO designation to his title.

The Padres, of course, are looking for a new manager after firing second-year helmer Jayce Tingler yesterday.  Last year, Tingler led San Diego to their first playoff appearance since 2006 and first postseason series win since 1998.  But the club’s second-half collapse in 2021, along with reports of tensions in the clubhouse, led to his dismissal.  Tingler was offered the opportunity to remain with the team in an as-yet-undetermined capacity, and Seidler said he hopes Tingler decides to stay. He added that the rest of the coaching staff has been given permission to look for opportunities elsewhere.

Seidler also told Lin that Preller alone will decide who the club’s next manager will be.  He said that while he and Preller recognize the value of major league managing experience, that won’t be a prerequisite for the new hire. “As we did when we hired Jayce, we put a premium on people with experience,” Seidler said. “But I would rather get the right 34-year-old than the wrong 64-year-old.”

Seidler’s comment regarding a new manager not needing prior big league managing experience is sure to raise eyebrows among at least some Padres fans.  Since being hired as GM in 2014, Preller has tabbed two permanent managers, Tingler and his predecessor Andy Green.  Neither had managed an MLB club prior to joining the Padres. There’s been plenty of speculation the Padres could zero in on a more veteran skipper this time around, but it doesn’t sound as if ownership or Preller consider that an absolute necessity.

Diamondbacks Outright Three Players

The offseason roster shuffle has begun in the desert.  The Diamondbacks announced that they’ve outrighted reliever Brandyn Sittinger, outfielder Henry Ramos and infielder Ildemaro Vargas to Triple-A Reno.  The moves leave the club with 37 players on their 40-man roster.

Sending those three down comes as no surprise, given the players’ performances so far. Sittinger joined the D-backs on a minor league deal prior to the 2020 season, and saw his first big league action last month.  He tossed 4 2/3 innings over five appearances, posting an unsightly 13.03 FIP.

Arizona signed the 29-year-old Ramos to a minor league deal on May 19 of this year.  He spent most of the season at Triple-A, and was called up September 5.  In 18 games he accumulated 55 plate appearances but only posted a meager 48 wRC+.

The well-traveled Vargas appeared in the big leagues each of the last five seasons, mostly with the Diamondbacks. He also played briefly for the Twins and Cubs last year.  In 381 total plate appearances at the MLB level, he’s put up -1.2 fWAR.

Cubs Part Ways With Coaches Anthony Iapoce, Mike Borzello

TODAY: Iapoce indeed won’t be returning, as Hoyer told reporters today.  In another coaching change, Hoyer announced that associate pitching/catching/strategy coach Mike Borzello won’t be returning in 2022.

OCTOBER 5: The Cubs are expected to move on from hitting coach Anthony Iapoce, tweets Robert Murray of FanSided.  Iapoce has been the Northsiders major league hitting coach since October, 2018, when Joe Maddon was still manager and Theo Epstein was President of Baseball Operations. Given that neither is still with the team, it probably isn’t a big surprise that the Cubbies are moving on from Iapoce, too.

Iapoce started with the Cubs in 2013, initially in their player development department, where he oversaw their minor league hitting program.  He also served as a special assistant to then-GM (now President of Baseball Operations) Jed Hoyer and Epstein.

In light of their 71-91 record, no one will be surprised that the Cubs finished with a below average 92 wRC+ overall.  Of course, in the big scheme of things a club’s hitting coach is far down the pecking order when it comes to results on the field.  And it certainly didn’t help the team’s offensive performance that Hoyer and company chose to trade Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez and Kris Bryant prior to the July 30 deadline. But the Cubs are clearly a team in transition, and changes were coming and will no doubt continue to be made before Opening Day, 2022.

Prior to joining the Cubs, Iapoce served as the Rangers’ hitting coach from 2016 to 2018, his first big league coaching assignment.  He broke into pro ball in 1994, after being taken by the Brewers in the 33rd round of that year’s draft.  In 11 minor league seasons he reached the AAA level during parts of four campaigns, but only managed an anemic .210/.289/.266 output at that level. He then had stints as a minor league coach with the Marlins (2006 – 09) and Blue Jays (2010 – 12).

Yankees Announce Wild Card Roster

Heading into tonight’s Wild Card elimination game against division rival Boston, the Yankees made several adjustments to their roster.  The Bombers designated pitchers Andrew Heaney and Brody Koerner, and added catcher Rob Brantly and outfielder Greg Allen. Gerrit Cole will be on the bump opposite Nathan Eovaldi, and here’s how the overall roster will look:

Leaving both Heaney and Koerner off the playoff roster comes as no surprise, though for different reasons.  The Yanks acquired Heaney from the Angels in a deadline deal, but he couldn’t match even his pedestrian historical output when he arrived in the Bronx.  The former Halo has put up a career 4.45 FIP, but struggled to a 6.93 mark since being traded on July 30.

Drafted in 2015, the 27-year-old Koerner was a career Yankee farmhand until being called up August 3.  He spent 18 days on the roster, then was recalled for Sunday’s finale. In all, he appeared in just 2 games and tossed 3 innings. Neither pitcher was likely to see action tonight, so the Yanks clearly decided to fortify their bench with additions of Brantly and Allen.

Notably absent is DJ LeMahieu, whom the Yankees placed on the 10-day injured list due to a sports hernia over the weekend. LeMahieu’s injury removes him as a possibility for both the Wild Card game and for a potential American League Division Series, but he could potentially return by the ALCS, should the Yankees advance. Other notable absences include Jordan Montgomery, Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon, but they can be added for the ALDS if the Yankees make it past the Sox.

J.D. Martinez Not On Red Sox’ Wild Card Roster

The Red Sox have announced their roster for tonight’s Wild Card showdown with their archrival New York Yankees. Perhaps most notably, slugging outfielder J.D. Martinez has been left off it after injuring his ankle in one of the more unusual on-field injuries you’re likely to see.  Nathan Eovaldi will start on the hill for the Sox. Here’s how the roster breaks down:

Having to play a win-or-go-home playoff contest against the Yanks without Martinez is, to say the least, less than ideal for the Sox.  Moreover, the way in which Martinez injured himself surely falls under the category of “The Baseball Gods Must Hate Us.”  Jogging out to right field in the middle of the fifth inning in Sunday’s must-win contest against the Nationals, Martinez tripped over second base, spraining his left ankle.  Clearly one of the Beantowners’ three best hitters, Martinez put up a 128 wRC+, bettered only by Rafael Devers (134) and Xander Bogaerts (130).  Unfortunately for Red Sox Nation, he’ll be no more than a cheerleader tonight.

On the bright side, the Sox are starting Eovaldi, who has been the club’s best and most reliable pitcher in 2021.  Eovaldi took a huge step forward this year, which by many measures has been the best of his career.  Among starters with at least 140 innings pitched, Eovaldi led the American League in fWAR (5.6) and FIP (2.79) while finishing a close second to John Means in walk rate (4.6%).  He was able to keep the ball in the yard better than he has since 2015, with a HR/9 of just 0.74, no small feat while calling cozy Fenway Park your home.

Also of note, the Sox left Chris Sale off the roster, at least for tonight’s game.  That’s not surprising, given that he started Sunday and is coming back from Tommy John surgery he underwent in March of last year.  While Sale has been effective since returning to action on August 14, posting a 3.69 FIP, he’s also averaged just over 4.2 IP over his nine starts, and he certainly wasn’t going to pitch tonight. If Boston dispenses with the Bombers, they’ll be able to add Sale and (if healthy) Martinez to the roster for the ALDS.
