Fantasy Baseball: The New CSW Darlings

Hello, friends.

As I end a three-day fog of little kids' softball games, swim meets, and birthday parties, let's use one of my (and many people's) favorite pitching stats to predict future success, CSW%.

CSW% is lovely not only for its usefulness but also for the sheer simplicity. You take a pitcher's called strikes, add them to his swinging ones, and divide by their total pitches. Bingo-bango, you have CSW%, a stat that consistently has some of the highest returns when it comes to predicting strikeout rates.

Fantasy Baseball: New Stars?

Hello, friends.

I come to you deep from within the family bunker, relishing these last few hours before summer "vacation" activities get fully rolling in the morning. For new (or not yet) parents, let this serve as a PSA: summer vacation is a lie. In particular, during June, because everyone just lo-ooves to pack everything in right away. It's a hellscape; please take heed when scheduling.

Anywell, baseball. We're now at the third pole, and there's no time like the present to make definitive and grandiose statements about fantasy players. With that in mind, let's take two of the players mentioned frequently in my chats this season (11 am CT on Thursdays) and put our foot down. No more hemming, and certainly no more hawing. We're calling the fight.

These two guys got the goods, dude.

Fantasy Baseball: Stash Party

Hello, friends.

With just one week until the calendar flips to June, you know what that means -- that's right, we're only seven days away from me dressing up like Pikachu for our son's second-annual Pokemon birthday party so a whole pack of feral six-year-olds can throw homemade Pokeballs at me. Please, keep me in your thoughts.

*This will end the official costume count for the school year, with PikaNick joining DumbleNick(2x), Giggles McNickels the Leprechaun, and the Tin Diesel Man.

This time of year also means that prospect cash-in season is picking up steam again after the first waves have passed. Pressing team needs (but definitely not service clock manipulation), mean more and more top prospects will soon be hitting the field. With that in mind, let's look at a handful of guys who could be getting the call soon.

Fantasy Baseball: Happy Stabilization Day!

Hello, friends.

It's finally here. Like a baseball Christmas morning, we can finally say everything matters. No more, "it's just April" or "don't worry, regression is coming" -- none of that couching is necessary anymore. The numbers are in. Or, at least, enough of them are.

The Rubicon has been crossed and there is no turning back because it's officially official, fellow number-nerds...

It's Stabilization Day!

That's right, fellow nerds; all of your favorite fantasy numbers have officially stabilized, with much of the relevant player pool either having crossed or getting ready to cross the necessary thresholds for doing so. Let me explain, completely.

Fantasy Baseball: Dealing With Early Anchors

Hello, friends.

Ahh, it's almost officially time; I can feel it, deep in my plums.

No, I'm not talking about the time of year when the Chicago White Sox are officially eliminated from playoff contention. Give them some credit, that's still weeks away. Colorado, on the other hand, is officially on the clock.

No, I'm talking about the day when everything, for almost everyone, officially matters. We're so close to Stabilization Day, I can almost taste it.

But, unfortunately, Tom Tango didn't see his shadow last week -- we'll just have to wait a little longer.

Until then, let's talk about what people seem to be most concerned about -- at least according to the questions in our weekly chats (every Thursday at 11 am Central).

Why is *insert name of player drafted in the first five rounds* hurting me so much, and what can I do to get revenge on their horrible, rotten souls*?

Fantasy Baseball: Will April Power Bring More Fantasy Showers?

Hello, friends.

It's a wonderful time of year, with buckets of April showers now forcing a bevy of flowers to bloom at our house, whilst tricking any passerby into thinking master gardeners must live there. In reality, we just bought our house from an old woman who really (really!) liked to garden and had virtually everything automated/dummy-proofed. I'm not even kidding - only a bare minimum of maintenance is required and we spend a couple of months drowning in flowers -- but those silly, passersby don't need to know that, do they? Ruse!

April also brought us new showers of power for fantasy baseball; some old faces, some new. I bet you can't guess who is currently leading the league in home-run rate? Psst...It rhymes with "Jorge Polanco". With every flip of the calendar, our sample sizes to separate the useful wheat from the confusing chaff of statistical noise grow ever larger. Particularly in the land of power, as many batted-ball statistics don't require monster pools of data before we can start naming them possibly significant.
