Todd Helton Trade Update

By Tim Dierkes | January 29, 2007 at 5:45pm CDT

UPDATE: An official statement has been released: the trade talks are dead.  So many wasted words on papers and blogs.  Oh well.

UPDATE: The Rockies don’t want to pitch in more than $36.6MM, so the Red Sox are reluctant to part with Delcarmen or Hansen in the deal.  And the Red Sox aren’t happy with the Rockies’ leaking of Tavarez and Lowell’s names.  Of course, the Red Sox were the ones who pulled the plug on the Larry Bigbie deal of ’05 at the last minute.

Let’s see what’s new in the Todd Helton saga.

First off, Josh Beckett admitted to watching Fever Pitch.  Ouch.  Michael Silverman indicates that the Red Sox still haven’t seen an offer they consider serious.  Helton wants the deal done before spring training or not at all.  He’d be happy to play in Boston.

The Denver Post tells us that Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd returns today from family matters to resume trade negotiations.  The Post goes further than the before spring training thing, saying that Helton will veto any deal done after this week.  The Rockies still want one or two of Hansen, Delcarmen, and Ellsbury.  The Red Sox are more into the Tavarez/Lowell salary dump idea.

Buster Olney adds that the Rockies will make this trade if Delcarmen is included.

Schilling To Pitch In 2008

By Tim Dierkes | January 29, 2007 at 8:36am CDT

Curt Schilling has decided to pitch in 2008, and he’s currently in contract discussions with the Red Sox.  He’s a free agent after the ’07 season, during which he’ll make $13MM.  Schilling told WEEI that he won’t consider pitching in New York.  He hopes to finish negotiations with the Red Sox before spring training, one way or another.

PECOTA likens Schilling to Gaylord Perry.  BP’s projection system values Schilling at $8.4MM in 2008.

In my 2007 RotoAuthority Fantasy Guide, I’ve projected Schilling to post a 3.70 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 195 innings this year.

Latest On Todd Helton Trade

By Tim Dierkes | January 28, 2007 at 10:10pm CDT

UPDATE: Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News says the Rockies are demanding an elite prospect from Boston, which might hold up the deal.  The Rox have agreed to pick up $40MM, but want one of Daniel Bard, Manny Delcarmen, Craig Hansen, Clay Buchholz, or maybe Jon Lester.  Fat chance on Buchholz or Bard.

Tons of Todd Helton stories in today’s papers; let’s see if there’s anything new.

Michael Silverman posted this info yesterday but I didn’t mention it: the Rockies are the driving force behind this deal.  Makes sense, given that Boston has no strong need for Helton and shouldn’t give up a lot of young talent.  The Rockies have made proposals, but the Red Sox have rejected all of them.  Silverman mentions most of the names we heard yesterday: Craig Hansen, Manny Delcarmen, Julian Tavarez, Mike Lowell.

Nick Cafardo mentions that back in November, the talk was about a Helton for Manny Ramirez trade.  Not sure how that would make sense for Boston.  Cafardo says the current talks don’t include Manny.  He says the Rockies want one or two young players who can help soon.

The Denver Post says Helton wants a deal made soon, if it happens.  He may or may not have imposed a deadline on the Rockies.  He confirmed his interest in Boston to the paper.

The New York Daily News says the Red Sox are insisting on the inclusion of Matt Clement and Lowell.  Clement will pitch by the All-Star break in the best case scenario after September shoulder surgery.  Bill Madden’s source says the essence of a deal is in place, and the Rockies have agreed to eat half of Helton’s contract.

David Murphy Drawing Interest

By Tim Dierkes | January 28, 2007 at 6:41pm CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe had an interesting tidbit at the bottom of his column today. He says the Red Sox and Marlins haven’t discussed center fielder David Murphy in a while, but Murphy is drawing interest from various clubs and talks could be renewed with Florida.  Cafardo notes that the Fish might part with lower-ceiling guys like Ricky Nolasco or Yusmeiro Petit but want to keep Taylor Tankersley.

The Red Sox passed on Conor Jackson to take Murphy in the 2003 draft.  Baseball America doesn’t place him among Boston’s top ten prospects, but considers his center field defense respectable.  Murphy improved his production upon a promotion to Triple A in 2006.  Translating his work at Pawtucket to a Major League Equivalent nets a .238/.311/.376 result.  PECOTA sees something similar for ’07.  Remarkably, that’d be an improvement upon Marlins center fielders last season.  By ’08 Murphy could develop a little more power and become a solid regular.

Red Sox Discussing Helton Trade

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2007 at 12:30pm CDT

UPDATE: Tracy Ringolsby says the Rox would absorb more than half of Helton’s contract, if they get the players they want.  Helton would also consider trades to Atlanta or St. Louis, but those teams aren’t interested.  Boston has proposed the inclusion of Mike Lowell and former Rockie Julian Tavarez.

Also, Colorado’s CEO acknowledged the talks that will continue into next week.  He also called Helton’s contract fair, so it’s hard to take his words at face value.

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the scoop: the Red Sox are discussing a Todd Helton trade with the Rockies.  Helton has said in the past that he’d consider waiving his no-trade to play in Boston; he’s aware of the current negotiations.

Renck reports that the Rockies like Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen and are willing to eat some salary.  Meanwhile, Buster Olney mentions that talks began last fall between the two clubs.  Olney speculates that the Red Sox might need Matt Clement included.  He also feels that Kevin Youkilis and/or Mike Lowell might be part of such a deal.  However, third base is well-blocked in Colorado.

Ken Rosenthal chimes in, mentioning that money is the main holdup in a deal.  The Rockies would receive Hansen, and hope to get Jacoby Ellsbury too.  A couple of sources told Rosenthal that Lowell is not in the deal.

As I mentioned before, Helton is probably worth half of his remaining five year, $90MM contract at best.  I would imagine the Rockies would have to throw down $20MM at least.

If the Red Sox could somehow keep Youkilis while adding Helton and Drew, their offense would become an unstoppable wall of OBP not unlike the Yankees.

Over at RotoAuthority, I have a look at Helton’s possible replacement in Colorado.

J.D. Drew Contract Resolved

By Tim Dierkes | January 25, 2007 at 6:03pm CDT

Finally!  Though the initial agreement came in late November, the Red Sox and J.D. Drew have finally settled the terms on their five-year, $70MM deal.

As expected, the Red Sox have some outs in case Drew’s shoulder becomes a problem.  Team doctors indicated that he could have shoulder issues three to five years from now, so the escape clauses are based on that assumption.

Boston officially has a murderer’s row of .400 OBP/.500-.600 SLG guys in the middle of their lineup.  It will be a nasty stretch for any pitcher.

Red Sox Will Pursue Clemens

By Tim Dierkes | January 15, 2007 at 8:10am CDT

In case there was any doubt, the Boston Herald’s Jeff Horrigan was able to confirm that the Red Sox will go after Roger Clemens once again if he decides to pitch.  Horrigan had an email exchange with team owner John W. Henry.

The Rocket is playing it coy once again, first holding off on deciding whether he’ll even play.  To most, it would be a surprise if he didn’t.  The media seems to believe that the Yankees are the favorite, but New York does have a lot of newspapers.  While the Clemens thing is getting old, that doesn’t mean the Astros don’t need him.

Nats Demand Red Sox Pitchers For Chad Cordero

By Tim Dierkes | January 1, 2007 at 10:35am CDT

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox remain interested in Nationals closer Chad Cordero.  The info may be in contrast to an article in the Boston Globe yesterday, which indicated that the price was too high on "name" closers.

The Nats are fond of pitchers Craig Hansen and Michael Bowden, but favor 22 year-old righty Clay Buchholz.  Baseball Prospectus’s Kevin Goldstein ranks Buchholz a touch above Bowden, mentioning "three plus pitches at times."  Buchholz finished 2006 in High Class A.  All three pitchers are quality arms with a lot of upside.

Cordero turns 25 in March.  He’s got three full seasons under his belt.  He features fine command and has been unhittable throughout his career.  He was bitten by the longball in 2006, but it looks like a fluke to me.

Boston Globe Trade Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | December 31, 2006 at 10:41am CDT

Aside from the aforementioned Roger Clemens tidbit, Nick Cafardo’s recent Boston Globe column is packed with interesting info.  A brief summary follows.

Cafardo believes the Red Sox will add one more reliever and then sort out the closer situation in spring.  The Cordero, Lidge, and Gonzalez talks didn’t go anywhere.  The idea of returning to Jon Papelbon, on the other hand, makes a lot of sense and isn’t out of the question.  Failing that, Julian Tavarez could be the favorite.  Shaky alternatives (Brendan Donnelly, Mike Timlin, Craig Hansen, Manny Delcarmen) abound.

A source told Cafardo that Matt Clement wants to prove everyone wrong and could be throwing by springtime.  Maybe he just wants to cash in after his walk year.  Clement had rotator cuff surgery at the end of September.

Rodrigo Lopez has gotten interest from five teams.  A move to St. Louis or somewhere like that could help him quite a bit.

Carl Everett and Sammy Sosa may need to play in the independent leagues to convince some team to give them a shot.  Two of baseball’s finest role models, right there.

Mark Mulder is still looking at the Cards, Rangers, and Indians for his options.  The Tribe has offered two years and $8MM with another $7MM in incentives.  The Rangers offer less than $8MM guaranteed but a possible package of $18.75MM instead of $15MM.

The Giants would still like to recruit David Wells despite their signing of Barry Zito.  Such a move would push Jonathan Sanchez to the bullpen.  The Phillies, Padres, Diamondbacks, and Mets may also be interested in Wells.

Red Sox Targeting Closer?

By Tim Dierkes | December 27, 2006 at 12:59pm CDT

The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo has a J.D. Drew update for us.  It may be that Boras does not want to revise Drew’s contract given that Boras’s surgeon gave Drew’s shoulder the thumbs up.

More intriguing is a line at the end of the post – the Red Sox are targeting a trade for a closer and are targeting one of Chad Cordero, Brad Lidge, and Mike Gonzalez.
