Allan Dykstra

Odds and Ends: Ibanez, Dunn, Blake, Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | August 12, 2008 at 9:53am CDT

Let’s kick off the morning with some random links.

  • Live chat here today at 2pm CST.
  • Brian Matusz is hopeful about striking a deal with the Orioles by Friday’s deadline.  Roch Kubatko has a source saying it’s likely.
  • Baseball America’s Jim Callis warns us not to listen to the posturing – he still expects all the first-round draft picks to sign with the possible exception of Allan Dykstra.
  • Should the Mariners offer Raul Ibanez a three-year deal at $10-11MM per?
  • No word yet on possible Rays acquisitions in wake of the Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria injuries.  Marc Lancaster wonders if Kenny Lofton or…don’t say it…Barry Bonds would make sense.
  • The Mets had no interest in Adam Dunn.  They wonder about his passion, according to Joel Sherman.  Did you know he doesn’t like baseball?
  • The Phillies were more interested in Casey Blake than Manny Ramirez.
  • Athletics Nation looks at some free agent options for ’09.
  • Shannon Stewart didn’t understand his latest Blue Jay Experience.
  • The Yankees, Mets, Angels, and Padres have scouts at the Olympics to watch Hitoki Iwase, Koji Uehara, Kenshin Kawakami, Yu Darvish, and Kyuji Fujikawa.

Odds and Ends: Eaton, Dykstra, Lohse, Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2008 at 10:36am CDT

Let’s round up some linkage.

  • ESPN’s Buster Olney wonders if Adam Everett would be a good fit for the Dodgers.
  • Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton accepted a minor league assignment today.  It seems that J.A. Happ will replace him.
  • Jim Callis of Baseball America thinks the only first-round pick who might not sign will be San Diego’s Allan Dykstra.
  • I did a Q&A with Mets Fans Forever.
  • Cardinals GM John Mozeliak dismissed the idea of trading Kyle Lohse.  Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe believes the Cardinals have the best shot at acquiring A.J. Burnett.  But don’t forget that interesting suggestion yesterday from John Perrotto: the Jays might offer Burnett an additional $2MM in ’09 and ’10 to entice him to stay.
  • Marlins catcher Matt Treanor had a setback, increasing their need to acquire a backstop.
  • Rays manager Joe Maddon says the chances of a trade are "50-50 at best."
  • The D’Backs are still talking extension with Cy Young contender Dan Haren, who is signed cheaply through 2010.
  • Blue Jays reliever Brian Tallet is out at least three weeks with a broken toe; bad timing for potential suitors like the Mets.
  • I did the Drunk Jays Fans podcast last night.

Odds and Ends: Chacon, Minaya, Inoa

By Tim Dierkes | June 27, 2008 at 9:18am CDT

Nothing major cracking on the hot stove this morning, so we’ll kick it off with odds and ends.

  • The Padres haven’t finalized the deal with top pick Allan Dykstra due to concerns with his physical.
  • Sorry Pirates fans, but the team does not have interest in bringing back Shawn Chacon.
  • David Lennon believes Omar Minaya’s job is safe.  Minaya could seek an extension after the season (he’s signed through ’09).
  • In a non-subscriber article, Baseball Prospectus’ Joe Sheehan gives his take on whether certain teams should be buyers or sellers.
  • Saberscouting gives a scouting report on Michel Inoa.
  • Henry Schulman asks C.C. Sabathia whether San Francisco will be on his list.
  • A case for the Braves to sign Barry Bonds.
  • Sam Mellinger continues his look at Dayton Moore’s work in Kansas City.
  • Theo Epstein expects Red Sox execs Ben Cherington and Jed Hoyer to become GMs soon.

Padres Sign First Round Pick Dykstra

By Tim Dierkes | June 12, 2008 at 9:37am CDT

The Padres have signed their first and second round draft picks, Allan Dykstra and Jaff Decker.  Dykstra will get around $1.4MM and Decker about $890K.

Dykstra (no relation to Lenny) is a college first baseman with great raw power, according to Baseball America. He was the 23rd overall pick; Paul DePodesta compared him to Jim Thome.  Decker is a high school outfielder, chosen 42nd overall.
