Braves Sign Austin Pope To Minor League Deal

The Braves have signed right-hander Austin Pope to a minor league deal, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The Beverly Hills Sports Council client has been assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett for now but will presumably receive an invite to big league spring training.

Pope, 27, joins a new organization for the first time in his career. The pontiff was drafted by the Diamondbacks back in 2019. He climbed the minor league ladder and got to make brief major league debut in 2025. He was added to the roster in the final week of the regular season and got to make one appearance. On September 25th, with the Snakes down 8-0 to the Dodgers, Pope tossed two scoreless innings of mop-up duty. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one.

The righty was outrighted off the roster at the end of the season and was able to elect free agency, which has allowed Atlanta to scoop him up. They are presumably placing stock in Pope’s minor league results. Over the past three years, he has thrown 160 1/3 innings in the minor leagues, mostly with the Triple-A Reno Aces. His 4.55 earned run average in that time isn’t especially impressive but the Aces play in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. His 9.4% walk rate in that time was pretty close to average while his 27.6% strikeout rate was quite strong.

Pope still has a full slate of option and just a handful of service days. If he gets added to Atlanta’s roster at any point, he can give the club a depth arm with roster flexibility and years of cheap control. For now, he can provide them papal depth without taking up a spot on the 40-man.

12 Diamondbacks Players Elect Minor League Free Agency

TODAY: Pope, Curtiss, Kelly, Nelson, and Kaiser all elected minor league free agency, according to the Reno Aces’ official transactions page.  In addition, Matt Mervis, Cristian Pache, Matt Foster, and Tristin English also elected free agency.  Of that quartet, only English (a third round pick for Arizona in the 2019 draft) received any big league playing time with the D’Backs in 2025, and the others were in the organization on minor league contracts.

NOV. 6: The Diamondbacks have announced a handful of roster moves. Infielder Ildemaro Vargas, catcher James McCann, and left-hander Jalen Beeks have elected free agency. Right-handers Austin Pope, John Curtiss, and Casey Kelly, left-hander Kyle Nelson, and infielder Connor Kaiser were outrighted off the 40-man roster. Arizona’s 40-man roster now sits at 38 players.

Vargas just wrapped up his third stint with the team. The versatile utilityman debuted with the Diamondbacks in 2017. After playing a minor role across three seasons, Arizona designated him for assignment in 2020. The DFA led to a trade to the Twins, though Minnesota would also designate Vargas for assignment less than a month after acquiring him. The Cubs scooped him up off waivers for the final month of the season. Vargas went through a similar set of transactions in 2021, just in a different order. He was claimed off waivers by the Pirates in May, then designated for assignment a couple of weeks later. Pittsburgh worked out a trade that sent Vargas back to Arizona.

Washington gave Vargas his longest look to date. The Nationals signed him as a minor league free agent in May of 2022. He hit .280 in 53 games with the team. Washington gave Vargas semi-regular playing time over the next two seasons. He topped 300 plate appearances for the first time in 2024. Vargas signed a minor league deal to return to Arizona this past offseason. He appeared in 38 games with the team in 2025. Vargas has spent time at all four infield positions, plus left field and right field. He’s also made five appearances in mop-up duty on the mound, hilariously allowing just two earned runs in five innings. The 34-year-old’s extreme versatility could get him another gig this offseason.

Arizona added McCann after Atlanta cut him loose in June. He appeared in 42 games for the team, filling in behind the plate after Gabriel Moreno went down with a hand injury. The 34-year-old posted a solid 110 wRC+ in limited action.

Beeks ended up being a decent find for the Diamondbacks. They signed him just before the season began, and the veteran lefty contributed a 3.77 ERA over 57 1/3 innings. Beeks missed time with a back injury, but still managed to make 61 appearances, including two as an opener.

Curtiss is the only member of the DFA group to make a significant impact at the MLB level in 2025. He appeared in 30 games with the big-league club, recording a 3.93 ERA. Curtiss has bounced around frequently since debuting in 2017, pitching for eight different teams.

Nelson has been a part of Arizona’s bullpen in recent years, but he only appeared in three games this past season. Pope debuted in September, making a two-inning appearance against the Dodgers before heading back to Triple-A Reno. Kelly pitched in two games in August. Kaiser had a couple of brief stints with the big-league club, going 2-for-18 across 11 games.

Diamondbacks Designate Jake Woodford For Assignment

The Diamondbacks announced today that they’ve designated right-hander Jake Woodford for assignment. Right-hander Austin Pope’s contract was selected from Triple-A to replace Woodford on the 40-man and active rosters.

Woodford, 29 next month, was a first-round pick by the Cardinals back in 2015 who made his MLB debut during the shortened 2020 campaign. He struggled to a 5.57 ERA as a long reliever in that rookie year, but enjoyed better results come 2021 and ’22 with a respectable 3.26 ERA and 3.93 FIP in 116 frames across those two seasons. His 15.4% strikeout rate against a 7.5% walk rate was decidedly lackluster, but he helped to make up for that by generating grounders at an impressive 45.8% clip. That peripheral-beating sleight of hand did not last, however, and in 2023 he posted an ERA north of 6.00 on the year before being non-tendered by St. Louis during the 2023-24 offseason.

Since 2024, Woodford has jumped between teams as a journeyman without logging more than a handful of innings in any one place. He pitched for the White Sox and the Pirates at the big league level last year, logging 35 innings of work with a 7.97 ERA despite a 4.94 FIP. He posted a more respectable 3.93 ERA at the Triple-A level that year, but ultimately found himself in free agency once again when he was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh over the offseason. He landed with Colorado on a minor league deal, which appeared to be a solid fit on paper given his past success as a ground ball pitcher. Unfortunately, he didn’t manage to break camp with the club and was granted his release just before Opening Day 2025.

Once the 2025 season began, Woodford after pitched at Triple-A for the Yankees and Cubs with middling results for both affiliates before catching on with Arizona on a major league deal in early July. He’s made 22 appearances with the Diamondbacks since then, though his work hasn’t been especially impressive. Across 36 1/3 innings of work, Woodford has posted a 6.44 ERA with a 4.27 FIP and a strikeout rate of just 13.5%. With the Diamondbacks still hanging on in the playoff race, it’s hardly a surprise that they’ve opted to cut a pitcher with Woodford’s limited success from the roster in favor of a fresh face.

That fresh face is Pope, who was a 15th-rounder for the Snakes back in 2019 and will celebrate his 27th birthday next month. Pope has a 4.60 ERA in 29 1/3 innings of work at the Triple-A level this year, though those results aren’t quite as weak as they might sound given the fact that Arizona’s Reno affiliate plays in the Pacific Coast League’s offense-friendly environment. Pope’s first appearances with the Snakes will be his big league debut, and he’ll be looking to show out enough over the coming days to convince the Diamondbacks to keep him on their 40-man roster throughout the coming offseason.
