Guardians Select Kolby Allard

The Guardians announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Kolby Allard from Triple-A Columbus.  Left-hander Erik Sabrowski was moved to the 60-day injured list and right-hander Zak Kent was optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding moves. As reported yesterday, Cleveland also called up Doug Nikhazy as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader with the Red Sox.

Allard signed a minor league deal with the Guards back in February, after the Phillies outrighted the southpaw off their roster following the 2024 season and Allard elected free agency.  It was essentially an early non-tender move for Philadelphia, as Allard was arbitration-eligible and projected to earn $1.1MM in 2025, though the Phils still opted against paying this modest sum.

The veteran didn’t make a sterling case for himself in posting a 5.00 ERA in 27 innings for the Phillies last year, with only a 19.7% strikeout rate but a solid 6.8% walk rate.  Allard’s 4.18 SIERA was notably better than his ERA, and it was the second-best SIERA Allard has posted during a seven-year MLB career that has seen the lefty post a 5.99 ERA across 272 innings with three different teams.  Allard hasn’t posted particularly good numbers as either a starter or as a reliever, but his ability to work in both capacities as a swingman has kept getting him opportunities at the big league level.

Yesterday’s rainout gave the Guardians an unexpected off-day, and it lines up a busy upcoming stretch of the schedule.  Cleveland will now play 13 games over the next 12 days, so having a versatile innings-eater like Allard on hand is a useful way to help the pitching staff cope with this increased workload.  It remains to be seen exactly how long Allard might stick on the Guardians’ roster, however, and since he is out of minor league options, the Guards would have to first designate him for assignment and expose him to waivers before outrighting him back to the minors.  Allard would again have the ability to opt for free agency over an outright assignment, should this situation play out.

Sabrowski began the season the 15-day IL after elbow inflammation kept him from pitching during Spring Training.  A move to the 60-day injured list counts as no surprise since Sabrowski will still need a lengthy ramp-up period to make up for the lack of his regular prep time, though it means his 2025 debut will be held off until late May at the earliest.  (As a reminder, the clock for a 60-day IL placement starts at the time of an initial IL placement, not from the time a player is officially moved to the 60-day.)

Erik Sabrowski Likely To Start Season On IL

Guardians reliever Erik Sabrowski has not appeared in a game this spring as he nurses inflammation in his pitching elbow. While there is no indication that the issue is particularly serious, any elbow problems are concerning when it comes to a pitcher who has already undergone two Tommy John surgeries in his career. According to MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins, Sabrowski was given “an anti-inflammatory injection” this past week. The southpaw will take some time to rest before being re-examined next week – and hopefully starting a throwing program soon after. However, this setback means he is likely to begin the 2025 season on the IL.

Never a highly-ranked prospect, Sabrowski burst onto the scene last September, tossing 12 2/3 innings and striking out 19. Of the 47 batters he faced, not one crossed the plate. Only six reached base. Despite his lack of experience, the left-hander made Cleveland’s postseason roster and continued to impress in October. He faced 23 batters over 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight. He gave up two runs, though only one was earned.

The star of Sabrowski’s arsenal is his four-seam fastball. He doesn’t throw it especially hard, but his long extension increases the pitch’s perceived velocity. He also gets great movement on the pitch, and it’s his best weapon for generating swing and miss. The 27-year-old complements his heater with two breaking balls – a curveball and a slider – both of which have the potential to be plus secondaries.

After his strong performance in 2024, Sabrowski seemed like a good bet to make the Guardians’ Opening Day roster and pitch meaningful innings out of the bullpen in 2025. While the former is now unlikely, the latter is still a strong possibility. Not only is Sabrowski a promising arm – the ZiPS projection system sees him posting an ERA in the mid-3.00s – but he is one of only two left-handed relievers with MLB experience on Cleveland’s 40-man roster. With Sabrowski on the shelf, RosterResource currently has Tim Herrin and Doug Nikhazy as the lefties in the projected Opening Day bullpen. Herrin is a lock, but Nikhazy has no MLB experience and next to no experience pitching out of the ’pen. If Sabrowski can get back to full health soon, he should have a job waiting for him.

Anthony Gose Elects Free Agency

August 30: Cleveland announced Friday that Gose cleared waivers and again elected free agency in lieu of an outright assignment.

August 28: The Guardians announced Wednesday that they’ve designated left-hander Anthony Gose for assignment. It’s rather incredibly the third DFA of the month for Gose, who has twice cleared waivers and returned to the organization (the second time after very briefly electing free agency). His spot on the roster will go to fellow left-hander Erik Sabrowski, whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Columbus. Sabrowski is now in line to make his major league debut the first time he takes the mound for Cleveland.

Gose, 34, pitched two innings in last night’s loss to the Royals, allowing a run four hits with one strikeout. The outfielder-turned-reliever has pitched 3 1/3 big league frames this season and allowed three runs. He’s spent the bulk of the season pitching for Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate in Columbus, where he’s logged 39 innings with a solid 3.46 ERA, a huge 32.9% strikeout rate and a problematic 15% walk rate.

The 2024 season is Gose’s first year back from a Tommy John procedure that wiped out his entire 2023 campaign. A former second-round pick who ranked as one of the top prospects in the game during his days as a center fielder, he’s still looking to establish himself as a viable big league option in the bullpen. Gose has pitched 31 innings in the majors since making the switch to the mound and recorded a 4.35 ERA with big strikeout numbers (29.5%) and also big walk issues (12.9%).

A two-way star in high school who had some draft interest as a pitcher, Gose was brandishing a fastball that averaged 99.3 mph when he made his mound debut in 2021. He’s since undergone elbow surgery and seen that average heater dip to 95.2 mph — still a well above-average mark (particularly for a lefty), but not the same type of overpowering offering it was a few years back. Gose is still piling up strikeouts in Triple-A, but the command of his fastball/slider combination is a work in progress.

Gose will once again head to the waiver wire now that he’s been designated for assignment. He has the right to reject an outright in favor of free agency, but at this point of the season there’s a good chance he’d just re-sign with Cleveland and head back to Columbus anyhow, as he did following his previous DFA.

As for Sabrowski, this is his first call to the big leagues. The 6’4″, 230-pound southpaw was a 14th-round pick by the Padres in 2018 who came to the Guardians organization by way of the Rule 5 Draft’s minor league phase in 2021. Although he’s a 2018 draftee, he’s only pitched in parts of three professional seasons, thanks to the canceled 2020 minor league campaign and a pair of Tommy John surgeries that both cost him at least a full season. He has just 99 1/3 professional innings under his belt at this point.

Even with that minimal workload, Sabrowski has been impressive with the Guardians since returning from his most recent elbow surgery. Like Gose, he’s posted huge strikeout numbers but also bloated walk rates. His 2023 season saw Sabrowski log 21 2/3 frames with a 2.49 ERA in Double-A. He punched out 30.4% of his opponents but also walked 19.6% of the batters he faced.

Sabrowski opened the 2024 season back at Double-A and notched a pristine 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 innings there, fanning a comical 54.2% of his opponents against a vastly improved 4.2% walk rate. Since being promoted to Triple-A, he’s logged a 4.38 ERA in 37 innings while recording a 31.2% strikeout rate against a once-again troublesome 17.6% walk rate. He’ll need to improve that command in order to find sustained success in the majors, but there’s little doubting Sabrowski’s ability to miss bats in droves. For now, he gives Cleveland skipper Stephen Vogt a fresh arm as the Guards look to fend off a surging Royals club in the AL Central, with the Twins only 2.5 games behind as well.
