Minor MLB Transactions: 8/20/16

By charliewilmoth | August 20, 2016 at 6:12pm CDT

Saturday’s minor moves from around baseball:

  • The Rockies have announced that recently designated right-hander Gonzalez Germen has accepted an assignment to Triple-A Albuquerque. Colorado dropped Germen from its 40-man roster Aug. 12 after he had combined for 73 1/3 innings with the club since last season. More than half of those frames (40 2/3) have come this year, but Germen struggled with a 5.31 ERA, 7.08 K/9 and 5.53 BB/9. Previously with the Mets and Cubs, the 28-year-old has a 4.63 ERA, 8.06 K/9 and 5.06 BB/9 in 144 career major league innings.
  • In another pitching-related move, the Rockies will release lefty Jason Gurka, tweets Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. Gurka, 28, has tossed 17 1/3 major league innings, all of which have come in Colorado since last year, with a 9.35 ERA, 7.27 K/9 and 2.08 BB/9.
  • The Braves have released righty Andrew Thurman, per Matt Eddy of Baseball America (Twitter link). The Astros took Thurman in the second round of the 2013 draft before ultimately shipping him to Atlanta in a January 2015 trade involving catcher Evan Gattis. Control problems have hampered the 24-year-old Thurman since that year, having failed to post a sub-5.00 BB/9 in stints at the High-A and Double-A levels. With Double-A Mississippi this year, Thurman threw 62 2/3 innings and compiled a 6.89 ERA, 7.47 K/9 and 6.75 BB/9.

Earlier updates:

  • The Orioles will sign lefty-hitting outfielder Chris Dickerson to a minor league deal and assign him to Double-A Bowie, Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball.com writes. He could be called up to the Orioles in September. The Orioles are looking for outfield depth in the wake of Joey Rickard’s thumb injury. Connolly writes that they briefly considered pursuing Carlos Gomez, although that idea didn’t advance very far. The 34-year-old Dickerson played 38 games in the Blue Jays organization last season before undergoing shoulder surgery. He last appeared in the big leagues with the Indians in 2014 and has a career .257/.335/.395 line in parts of seven Major League seasons. He played for the Orioles in 2013.
  • The Astros have purchased the contract of lefty Eury De La Rosa from the Long Island Ducks, as Newsday’s Jordan Lauterbach seems to have been first to report (on Twitter). De La Rosa pitched yesterday for Triple-A Fresno, allowing seven runs over four innings. The 26-year-old last pitched in the big leagues with the Diamondbacks in 2014, and he has a career 4.21 ERA, 8.4 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 51 1/3 innings over two Major League seasons. He pitched in the minors for three organizations in 2015 before heading to the Atlantic League.

Outrighted To Triple-A: McGowan, De La Rosa

By Zachary Links | June 21, 2015 at 4:10pm CDT

Today’s outright assignments…

  • The Phillies outrighted Dustin McGowan to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to the MLB.com transactions page.  The 33-year-old has struggled with his control this season, leading to a 6.94 ERA in 23 1/3 innings. McGowan’s 21 strikeouts in that time are a solid mark, but he’s also walked 20 hitters, and his ground-ball rate is down significantly from its peak — a trend that began last year in Toronto and has continued in 2015.
  • Padres left-hander Eury De La Rosa cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A El Paso, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune (via Twitter).  De La Rosa, 25, has pitched exclusively at Triple-A this year, working to a 4.03 ERA with 6.9 K/9 against 5.6 BB/9 over 22 1/3 frames. That represents a career-worst K:BB ratio in his professional career.
  • As we passed along earlier today, Mets pitcher Dillon Gee was also placed on outright waivers.  As the DFA Tracker shows, that leaves six players in DFA limbo: Jhonatan Solano, Phillippe Aumont, Andy Parrino, Hector Noesi, Jeff Bianchi, and Rickie Weeks.

Padres Designate Eury De La Rosa

By Jeff Todd | June 19, 2015 at 5:13pm CDT

The Padres have designated lefty Eury De La Rosa for assignment, the club announced. San Diego selected the contract of corner infielder Brett Wallace in a corresponding move, necessitating a 40-man spot.

De La Rosa, 25, has pitched exclusively at Triple-A this year, working to a 4.03 ERA with 6.9 K/9 against 5.6 BB/9 over 22 1/3 frames. That represents a career-worst K:BB ratio in his professional career.

The southpaw spent time in the Diamondbacks bullpen over the past two seasons, putting up a 4.21 ERA in 51 1/3 total frames. De La Rosa bounced from the D’Backs to the Athletics and then to the Dodgers in recent months before reaching San Diego on a waiver claim.

The 28-year-old Wallace, a former top prospect, will make his first big league appearance for a team other than the Astros. He hasn’t seen the show since 2013, but owns a career .242/.313/.391 slash in just over 1,000 career plate appearances in the majors. Wallace has (as usual) hit Triple-A pitching well this year, slashing .305/.380/.460 while carrying a 21.1% strikeout rate.

Padres Claim Eury De La Rosa

By charliewilmoth | May 23, 2015 at 2:09pm CDT

The Padres have announced that they’ve claimed lefty reliever Eury De La Rosa from the Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso. To clear space on their 40-man roster, they moved righty Josh Johnson (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list. The Dodgers designated De La Rosa for assignment earlier this week.

De La Rosa, 25, continues to his fourth West division organization in six months. After he posted a 2.95 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 36 2/3 innings with Arizona in 2014, the Diamondbacks designated him for assignment in December and traded him to the Athletics. The A’s then designated him in April, at which point the Dodgers claimed him.

De La Rosa has pitched for Triple-A teams in both the Athletics and Dodgers organizations this season, striking out ten batters but walking nine and allowing eight runs, five earned, in 13 1/3 innings. Those aren’t inspiring numbers, obviously, and De La Rosa’s fastball generally doesn’t top 90 MPH, but he’s had some big-league success and can still be optioned, so it’s not surprising he’s attracted so much interest on the waiver wire.

Dodgers Designate Eury De La Rosa For Assignment

By Steve Adams | May 19, 2015 at 4:25pm CDT

The Dodgers announced today that they have designated left-handed reliever Eury De La Rosa for assignment. De La Rosa’s 40-man roster spot will go to Cuban infielder Hector Olivera, whose six-year contract has now been officially announced by the Dodgers.

De La Rosa, 25, was claimed off waivers from the Athletics about three weeks ago. After opening the season with six scoreless innings for Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate, however, De La Rosa struggled with the move to the Dodgers organization, surrendering five runs on 12 hits and four walks in 7 1/3 frames. De La Rosa had solid control as he worked his way up the minor league ladder, but he’s struggled with it since reaching Triple-A. In 103 1/3 innings at the top minor league level, he’s averaged five walks per nine innings, against 8.4 K/9.

Dodgers Claim Eury De La Rosa

By Steve Adams | April 30, 2015 at 1:27pm CDT

The Dodgers have claimed left-handed pitcher Eury De La Rosa off waivers from the Athletics, reports J.P. Hoornstra of the L.A. News Group (Twitter links). To make room on the 40-man roster, Brandon McCarthy has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list, he adds. De La Rosa will be assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, per Hoornstra.

The 25-year-old De La Rosa has worked exclusively at Triple-A for the Athletics this season, firing six innings with three unearned runs, five walks and four strikeouts in that time. Oakland picked De La Rosa up in a minor trade that sent cash to the D-Backs in December following a solid half-season of work in the Arizona ’pen. Last year, De La Rosa totaled 36 2/3 innings of relief for the Snakes and notched a 2.95 ERA with 7.9 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 and a 43 percent ground-ball rate.

The question for De La Rosa, of course, will be just how long he remains on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Of late, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and his associates have been aggressive on the waiver wire, but the purpose behind most of their claims has been to attempt to pass the new player through outright waivers by designating him for assignment within days of the successful claim.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has previously explained to Hoornstra and other reporters that the whirlwind of transactions has actually been part of the team’s plan and wasn’t unexpected among decision-makers within the organization. Recently, Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles wrote that the rash of injuries incurred by the Dodgers has played a part in the revolving door that has been the team’s final roster spot.
